  • Praktiker som gör skillnad : Om den verb-inriktade metoden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Historisk Tidskrift. - 0345-469X .- 2002-4827. ; 133:3, s. 335-354
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the so-called verb-oriented method and its role in the research project Gender and Work in early modern Sweden (GaW), which is based at Uppsala University. It provides a presentation of the GaW-database, which has been designed to allow analysis according to the verb-method. Finally, the article points out that this method can be combined with a number of different theoretical approaches as long as the focus is on practices. It is therefore compatible with the approaches of e.g., Judith Butler, Michel de Certeau, and Amartya Sen. Work is defined as "time-use with the purpose of making a living" and the article discusses why data on time-use, or actual work activities, are better suited for research into early modern Swedish working life than other types of data. It shows that activities are usually described in the sources by verb-phrases, and explains how and from what sources verb-phrases are collected and analyzed within the project. In order to allow for generalizations the verb-method presupposes large amounts of data. This is the rationale for the GaW-database, which at present includes around 5000 verb-phrases and 75000 data posts.

  • Omsorg om livet : Spädbarnsdödlighetens förändring i Ådalen under 1800-talet
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the first half of the nineteenth century infant mortality rates in Ådalen, an agrarian region in northern Sweden, were among the highest in the country. During the second half of the century the region experienced a rapid population growth and a restructuring of the economy in conjunction with the expansion of the sawmill industry. Infant mortality rates peaked in the 1870s but then declined to a level near the national average, despite the pressures of rapid industrialisation. Using an analytical model which emphasizes the role of the mother in infant care, variables that affect infant mortality are considered. The central argument is that a mother can either lessen or increase the impact of detrimental influences on infant survival, depending on her store of knowledge and how she is able to use it. The variables are broadly grouped into three categories: socio-economic, cultural and medical/health issues. The primary sources are church records, provincial physician’s reports and folklore documents. The results demonstrate that socio-economic factors were only important in the sense that better living conditions made it easier for a mother to care for her child. The high level of infant mortality in the region was due mainly to cultural factors that resulted in a weak breast-feeding tradition. Since it was thought that breast milk was insufficient, infants were put on a diet containing herring and gruel served in cow’s horn at a very early age, resulting in a variety of diarrhoeal afflictions. Although the provincial physicians strongly recommended breast feeding, most mothers continued the practice and the tradition remained unchanged. The decline of infant mortality was mainly due to the impact of midwives. They introduced new hygienic practices  in conjunction with deliveries and in the handling of supplementary foods which resulted in a decrease of both neonatal and post-neonatal deaths.

  • Barns and waged work : modernisation and differentiation in Norrland's forests in the mid twentieth century
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandia. - 0036-5483. ; 76:1, s. 100-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the processes of differentiation that are thought significant in understanding people's actions in relation to historical change. An intersectional approach is assayed that moves beyond the classic, tripartite basis for categorisation gender, class, ethnicity to incorporate distinctions made on other grounds, for example those determined by spatial or temporal notions of modernity and tradition. To this end, the article presents a study of life in the vast forests of Norrland, the northernmost of Sweden's three regions, in the 1940s. Two types of source material are under consideration: 'external' sources in the form of newspaper material, and 'internal' sources in the form of interviews. The question to be answered is how the changes of the 1940s chiefly the immediate effects of the modernisation then underway - were understood and influenced by those affected, and more specifically how the shift came about in views on how forestry-workers' households should manage their livelihoods. The point of departure is the suggestion that the intersectional analytical method can contribute to a more complete understanding of a historical phenomenon by narrowing down the problem of how historical change comes about. By taking changes that are in full swing, and that have a variety of spatial and temporal ramifications, it is possible to study the discursive process of differentiation that results. The designations spawned by these changes are highlighted in the present article to shed light on how the categorisations 'work'. While Sweden after 1945 went from being a markedly agrarian society to a highly industrialised nation in little more than a decade, the current of modernist ideas that left such a mark on the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930 and elsewhere remained influential. An intersectional perspective opens the way for an analysis of the legitimisation and naturalisation of the exercise of power; an analysis that uses a systematic construction of differences between people, but also between places, which are ordered hierarchically in a discourse influenced by these ideas. The categorisation processes can be traced in the 'external' material's descriptions of practices associated with certain places. Spatial differences, in as much as they are taken to describe a variety of temporal developments, are here shown to be integral to the process of differentiation. An analysis of descriptions of a visionary venture the jointly owned cattle barn in Bjarme, in the county of Jamtland - is used to show how 'bread-winning' is a disputed term, imbued with meaning by spatial distinctions as much as by a process of differentiation based on status and degree of development. The argumentation in the texts studied here brings together social class, level of education, gender, and family situation, and is held meaningful at the point where work and bread-winning intersect. The organisation of livelihoods that in Norrland centred on small 'subsidiary' farms is depicted in the 'external' material as old-fashioned and irrational. In the 'internal' material, on the other hand, a very. different picture appears, in which female-coded dairying work is related as a significant element in the households' livelihood. The article discusses how modernisation processes could also be performed and lived in other ways than those stipulated by the dominant, power-generating categorisations of the day. An uneven, contradictory development instead emerges from the evidence, in which older self-sufficient practices were not abruptly abandoned, and in which the term 'work' was understood and construed differently than it was in the 'external' descriptions, characterised as they were by rationalism as well as the housewife ideal, both of which are studied in the article. Thus the analysis clearly wins from an intersectional approach, rather than limiting its focus to one or two limited categorisations.

  • ’I never liked doing housework’ : A discussion on intersections of norms, made visible by a woman doing men’s work in forestry in mid-20th century Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Rural History 2010.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Rosemarie Fiebranz – ‘I never liked doing housework’: a discussion onintersections of norms, made visible by a woman doing men’s work in forestry inmid-twentieth-century SwedenThe 75-year old, retired woman lumberjack’s narratives are illuminating in many ways. She wasoften observing ‘from outside’, but as she had been brought up by her elderly grandparents, shewas also familiar with the lumberjacks’ households’ traditional organisation of work. During herworking life, starting c.1950, forestry changed a lot; the work was mechanised, and the maleworkforce gradually became employed all the year round. The older way of life, with small-scalefarming for additional maintenance, faded away, and with it, for example, women’s customarywork role in cattle-tending. In my paper, I will discuss the prospects to understand the constructionand change of distinctions of work along the lines of gender, class, age and civil status, in times ofsweeping social and economic transformation. With the help of the narratives of an individual whobroke established norms in many respects, I hope to catch sight of possible hidden contents, gapsand contradictions in the representation of the working life in Swedish forestry around the middleof the twentieth century. Further interviews with lumberjacks’ (house-)wives are used forcomparison.

  • Jord, linne eller träkol? : Genusordning och hushållsstrategier, Bjuråker 1750-1850
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to elucidate how people in a household-based pre-industrial agrarian economy acted during a period of great changes. The household is seen as a meaning-creating sym-bol in the local culture. The concept of gender is used for the meaning-creating categories of male and female, while the concept household strategies refers to the collective principles that have led to observable patterns of behav-iour within households. In Bjuråker land fragmentation was fast and far-reaching compared to other areas. Household strategies were aimed at land distribution and transfer within fami-lies, thereby countering the pressure of the increasing population. Flax growing and linen weaving was an established household strategy, and work for the ironworks made a break-through in the late 1820’s. The gender system established the framework for the utilisation of the available workforce, and the gender division of labour expressed the power relationship between the sexes, where men held the superior position within and outside households. Water-powered flax-processing plants became widely used locally in the early 1800. Power relationships in households with regard to work and property were reproduced in the use of this new technology. Eight peasant households is studied with accordance to land transfers, sale of linen fabric and work performed for the ironworks. Minutes from the church council’s hearings shows an increasing number of marital conflicts from ca. 1810. It is argued that household strategies were initially aimed primarily at the reproduction and im-provement of the farm household and at transferring the property to the chosen male succes-sor. Ancillary industries became increasingly integrated into house-hold strategies. Peasants’ households appears to have been more anxious to maintain gender distinctions in labour, than were landless households. The linen industry went from being a "prosperity-oriented" ancil-lary industry to being more like a classic proto-industry: a neces-sary source of income for land-poor households. The key cultural symbols, the master and the mistress, remained important in determining people’s actions, and gender-related power structures were repro-duced both in the practice of property transfer and in the gender distribution of labour.

    • While gender relations in the post-1800 labour market have been subject to much scholarly scrutiny, less is known about how women and men supported themselves in the early modern period. This article discusses the reasons for this lacuna and explores various approaches that could be used to increase knowledge in the field. It describes the verb-oriented method, used by the Gender and Work project at Uppsala University and inspired by the work of Sheilagh Ogilvie. Understanding ‘work’ as ‘use of time with the goal of making a living’, the method consists in systematic collection of verb phrases such as ‘to fish herring’, ‘to sell clothes’, etc. The article also presents the database GaW, which is designed so as to make possible systematic analysis of large sets of verb phrases.

  • The verb-oriented method : A new approach to women's work in rural Europe
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Studies of rural women’s work in early modern Europe face many challenges. There is no occupational statistics to rely on. Except for the rather blank terms ‘servant’ and ‘maid’, few women in the countryside had occupational titles. The overwhelming part of their work was unpaid and has not left any traces in payrolls and alike sources. And because early modern sources pay most attention to households (which are usually headed by men) and to formal institutions (such as guilds), they conceal much of women’s work. This paper presents the verb-oriented method used by the Gender and Work project, which was designed so as to go around these problems. The term ‘verb-oriented’ singles out what sort of data is of interest. Instead of looking at designators or property as clues to what people made for a living, focus is on descriptions of practices or activities, e.g. ‘A made hay’, ‘B fished herring’ and ‘C sold herring’. Such evidence is fragmentary and dispersed. Yet, it can be found, collected and systematized. The verb-oriented approach is a wide and open one. It does not, a priori, position women’s work in the context of a family economy or start from the household as the given unit of production. Instead, the organizational framework of women’s work needs to be investigated empirically. Nor does the approach confine itself to a certain sector or branch. Instead, sources are gleaned for evidence of all sorts of work, including both what has been regarded as reproductive tasks (e.g. child care) and what may be considered production proper. The outcome is a view on women’s work in rural areas which stresses multiple employments and flexibility.

  • Women as labour hikers : Gender, labour migration and the dynamics of the transition to capitalism in rural Sweden, c. 1680-1800
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Life-cycle service in farm work is often considered to have been the dominant form of paid employment for women in pre-capitalist rural areas in Sweden. What did it mean, when other forms of income were preferred in some areas during the 18th century? In the region of Dalecarlia (Dalarna) population growth and meagre agriculture, with fragmented land holdings, as well as long traditions of various additional sources of income, meant that it was close at hand to seek incomes through seasonal labour and sales journeys. Although traditionally mostly men wandered off, women gradually participated more during the 18th century. Female labour from Dalecarlia contributed to increasing numbers of wage workers, e.g. in textile proto industrial areas. Why did seasonally migrating women (and men) from Dalecarlia prefer returning to home annually? One hypothesis is that the scattered land ownership, as a result of inheritance practices including the distribution of land among all children, regardless of gender, meant that everyone “had something to return to”. In Dalecarlia, women’s seasonal labour migration, as well as e.g. tasks in livestock farming, was part of a practice where everyone – regardless of gender, civil status or age –worked for their sustenance, in agriculture and in various subsidiary industries. This is also an important overall result in the Gender and Work project, valid for all of early modern Sweden, which I discuss further in my paper.

    • Based on the verb-oriented method and a unique collection of observations from court records, this article shows that both men and women did almost all categories of work in early modern Sweden. On the level of concrete tasks, however, there was both difference and similarity between the genders. Marital status exerted a strong influence on women’s sustenance activities, creating a clear distinction between unmarried and ever-married. These patterns were probably the effect of a labour legislation that forced young people without independent means to offer their bodies and time to masters and mistresses.

  • HistSearch : Implementation and Evaluation of aWeb-based Tool for Automatic Information Extraction from Historical Text

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to a lack of NLP tools adapted to the task of analysing historical text, historiansand other researchers in humanities often need to manually search through largevolumes of text in order to find certain pieces of information of interest to theirresearch. In this paper, we present a web-based tool for automatic informationextraction from historical text, with the aim of facilitating this time-consuming process. We describe 1) the underlying architecture of the system, based on spellingnormalisation succeeded by tagging and parsing using tools available for the modernlanguage, 2) a prototypical graphical user interface used by the historians, and 3) athorough manual evaluation of the tool performed by the actual users, i.e. the historians, when applied to the specific task of extracting and presenting verb phrases describingwork in Early Modern Swedish text. The main contribution is the manual evaluation, which takes both quantitative and qualitative aspects into account, and is compared toautomatic evaluation results. We show that spelling normalisation is successful for thetask of tagging and lemmatisation, meaning that the words analysed as verbs by the toolare mostly considered as verbs by the historians as well. We also point out the furtherwork needed for improving parsing and ranking performance, in order to make the toolreally useful in the extraction process.

    • The aim of this thesis is to explore work as an idea and a practice for the construction and maintenance of differences and power relations, and to examine what the consequences were for the individual and society in early modern Sweden. The period saw an expansion of the state apparatus which created numerous new opportunities for employment. There also exists a body of literature from this period, in the form of instructions relating to work and households. The thesis draws both on these instructions and descriptions and on sources produced by the crown. The thesis shows that gender was a crucial factor for the organisation of work. Operating The service of the crown was characterised by two principal organisational forms: the household, and a precursor of a bureaucratic system. The household had its basis in the couple, and had a clear gendered division of power, the couple together constituted the management of the household, at the same time there was an element of male superordination. The other form was exclusively male and based on delegation of power within the organisation and on an attempt to formalise relations by written instructions. The majority of the jobs created were held by men. In crafts and administration, men took over a number of female areas of competence. In this process was occupational positions created for these men. Women’s opportunities to work were heavily affected by an idea of a female area of expertise, ‘womenfolk’s work’ which never become specialiced, but the investigation also shows that work created in the crowns households in positions of leadership created livelihoods for married adult women. Among employees that were young and unmarried the similarities between the genders were often more striking than the differences. Greater differences emerge from a comparison of the entire workforce of the crown, which shows women’s annual wages to be 75 per cent of those of men. Overall women had few opportunities to make careers and get well paid employments.
