  • SIMULTANEOUS OBSERVATIONS OF PKS 2155-304 WITH HESS, FERMI, RXTE, AND ATOM : SPECTRAL ENERGY DISTRIBUTIONS AND VARIABILITY IN A LOW STATE
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8205 .- 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 696:2, s. L150-L155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the first simultaneous observations that cover the optical, X-ray, and high-energy gamma-ray bands of the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304. The gamma-ray bands were observed for 11 days, between 2008 August 25 and 2008 September 6 (MJD 54704-54715), jointly with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the HESS atmospheric Cherenkov array, providing the first simultaneous MeV-TeV spectral energy distribution (SED) with the new generation of gamma-ray telescopes. The ATOM telescope and the RXTE and Swift observatories provided optical and X-ray coverage of the low-energy component over the same time period. The object was close to the lowest archival X-ray and very high energy (VHE; > 100 GeV) state, whereas the optical flux was much higher. The light curves show relatively little (similar to 30%) variability overall when compared to past flaring episodes, but we find a clear optical/VHE correlation and evidence for a correlation of the X-rays with the high-energy spectral index. Contrary to previous observations in the flaring state, we do not find any correlation between the X-ray and VHE components. Although synchrotron self-Compton models are often invoked to explain the SEDs of BL Lac objects, the most common versions of these models are at odds with the correlated variability we find in the various bands for PKS 2155-304.

  • The on-orbit calibration of the Fermi Large Area Telescope
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 32:3-4, s. 193-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope began its on-orbit operations on June 23, 2008. Calibrations, defined in a generic sense, correspond to synchronization of trigger signals, optimization of delays for latching data, determination of detector thresholds, gains and responses, evaluation of the perimeter of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), measurements of live time, of absolute time, and internal and spacecraft boresight alignments. Here we describe on-orbit calibration results obtained using known astrophysical sources, galactic cosmic rays, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each detector. Instrument response functions will be described in a separate publication. This paper demonstrates the stability of calibrations and describes minor changes observed since launch. These results have been used to calibrate the LAT datasets to be publicly released in August 2009.

  • THE LARGE AREA TELESCOPE ON THE FERMI GAMMA-RAY SPACE TELESCOPE MISSION
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 697:2, s. 1071-1102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Large Area Telescope (Fermi/LAT, hereafter LAT), the primary instrument on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) mission, is an imaging, wide field-of-view (FoV), high-energy gamma-ray telescope, covering the energy range from below 20 MeV to more than 300 GeV. The LAT was built by an international collaboration with contributions from space agencies, high-energy particle physics institutes, and universities in France, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and the United States. This paper describes the LAT, its preflight expected performance, and summarizes the key science objectives that will be addressed. On-orbit performance will be presented in detail in a subsequent paper. The LAT is a pair-conversion telescope with a precision tracker and calorimeter, each consisting of a 4 x 4 array of 16 modules, a segmented anticoincidence detector that covers the tracker array, and a programmable trigger and data acquisition system. Each tracker module has a vertical stack of 18 (x, y) tracking planes, including two layers (x and y) of single-sided silicon strip detectors and high-Z converter material (tungsten) per tray. Every calorimeter module has 96 CsI(Tl) crystals, arranged in an eight-layer hodoscopic configuration with a total depth of 8.6 radiation lengths, giving both longitudinal and transverse information about the energy deposition pattern. The calorimeter's depth and segmentation enable the high-energy reach of the LAT and contribute significantly to background rejection. The aspect ratio of the tracker (height/width) is 0.4, allowing a large FoV (2.4 sr) and ensuring that most pair-conversion showers initiated in the tracker will pass into the calorimeter for energy measurement. Data obtained with the LAT are intended to (1) permit rapid notification of high-energy gamma-ray bursts and transients and facilitate monitoring of variable sources, (2) yield an extensive catalog of several thousand high-energy sources obtained from an all-sky survey, (3) measure spectra from 20 MeV to more than 50 GeV for several hundred sources, (4) localize point sources to 0.3-2 arcmin, (5) map and obtain spectra of extended sources such as SNRs, molecular clouds, and nearby galaxies, (6) measure the diffuse isotropic gamma-ray background up to TeV energies, and (7) explore the discovery space for dark matter.

  • FERMI LARGE AREA TELESCOPE OBSERVATIONS OF THE VELA PULSAR
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 696:2, s. 1084-1093
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Vela pulsar is the brightest persistent source in the GeV sky and thus is the traditional first target for new gamma-ray observatories. We report here on initial Fermi Large Area Telescope observations during verification phase pointed exposure and early sky survey scanning. We have used the Vela signal to verify Fermi timing and angular resolution. The high-quality pulse profile, with some 32,400 pulsed photons at E >= 0.03 GeV, shows new features, including pulse structure as fine as 0.3 ms and a distinct third peak, which shifts in phase with energy. We examine the high-energy behavior of the pulsed emission; initial spectra suggest a phase-averaged power-law index of Gamma = 1.51(-0.04)(+0.05) with an exponential cutoff at E-c = 2.9 +/- 0.1 GeV. Spectral fits with generalized cutoffs of the form e(-(E/Ec)b) require b <= 1, which is inconsistent with magnetic pair attenuation, and thus favor outer-magnetosphere emission models. Finally, we report on upper limits to any unpulsed component, as might be associated with a surrounding pulsar wind nebula.

  • FERMI/LARGE AREA TELESCOPE DISCOVERY OF GAMMA-RAY EMISSION FROM THE FLAT-SPECTRUM RADIO QUASAR PKS 1454-354
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 697:1, s. 934-941
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope of high-energy gamma-ray (GeV) emission from the flat-spectrum radio quasar PKS 1454-354 (z = 1.424). On 2008 September 4, the source rose to a peak flux of (3.5 +/- 0.7) x 10(-6) ph cm(-2) s(-1) (E > 100 MeV) on a timescale of hours and then slowly dropped over the following 2 days. No significant spectral changes occurred during the flare. Fermi/LAT observations also showed that PKS 1454-354 is the most probable counterpart of the unidentified EGRET source 3EG J1500-3509. Multiwavelength measurements performed during the following days (7 September with Swift; 6-7 September with the ground-based optical telescope Automated Telescope for Optical Monitoring; 13 September with the Australia Telescope Compact Array) resulted in radio, optical, UV, and X-ray fluxes greater than archival data, confirming the activity of PKS 1454-354.

  • DISCOVERY OF PULSED gamma-RAYS FROM THE YOUNG RADIO PULSAR PSR J1028-5819 WITH THE FERMI LARGE AREA TELESCOPE
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8205. ; 695:1, s. L72-L77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radio pulsar PSR J1028-5819 was recently discovered in a high-frequency search (at 3.1 GHz) in the error circle of the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) source 3EG J1027-5817. The spin-down power of this young pulsar is great enough to make it very likely the counterpart for the EGRET source. We report here the discovery of gamma-ray pulsations from PSR J1028-5819 in early observations by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. The gamma-ray light curve shows two sharp peaks having phase separation of 0.460 +/- 0.004, trailing the very narrow radio pulse by 0.200 +/- 0.003 in phase, very similar to that of other known gamma-ray pulsars. The measured gamma-ray flux gives an efficiency for the pulsar of similar to 10-20% (for outer magnetosphere beam models). No evidence of a surrounding pulsar wind nebula is seen in the current Fermi data but limits on associated emission are weak because the source lies in a crowded region with high background emission. However, the improved angular resolution afforded by the LAT enables the disentanglement of the previous COS-B and EGRET source detections into at least two distinct sources, one of which is now identified as PSR J1028-5819.

  • PESSTO : survey description and products from the first data release by the Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey of Transient Objects
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 579
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. The Public European Southern Observatory Spectroscopic Survey of Transient Objects (PESSTO) began as a public spectroscopic survey in April 2012. PESSTO classifies transients from publicly available sources and wide-field surveys, and selects science targets for detailed spectroscopic and photometric follow-up. PESSTO runs for nine months of the year, January - April and August - December inclusive, and typically has allocations of 10 nights per month. Aims. We describe the data reduction strategy and data products that are publicly available through the ESO archive as the Spectroscopic Survey data release 1 (SSDR1). Methods. PESSTO uses the New Technology Telescope with the instruments EFOSC2 and SOFI to provide optical and NIR spectroscopy and imaging. We target supernovae and optical transients brighter than 20.5(m) for classification. Science targets are selected for follow-up based on the PESSTO science goal of extending knowledge of the extremes of the supernova population. We use standard EFOSC2 set-ups providing spectra with resolutions of 13-18 angstrom between 3345-9995 angstrom. A subset of the brighter science targets are selected for SOFI spectroscopy with the blue and red grisms (0.935-2.53 mu m and resolutions 23-33 angstrom) and imaging with broadband JHK(s) filters. Results. This first data release (SSDR1) contains flux calibrated spectra from the first year (April 2012-2013). A total of 221 confirmed supernovae were classified, and we released calibrated optical spectra and classifications publicly within 24 h of the data being taken (via WISeREP). The data in SSDR1 replace those released spectra. They have more reliable and quantifiable flux calibrations, correction for telluric absorption, and are made available in standard ESO Phase 3 formats. We estimate the absolute accuracy of the flux calibrations for EFOSC2 across the whole survey in SSDR1 to be typically similar to 15%, although a number of spectra will have less reliable absolute flux calibration because of weather and slit losses. Acquisition images for each spectrum are available which, in principle, can allow the user to refine the absolute flux calibration. The standard NIR reduction process does not produce high accuracy absolute spectrophotometry but synthetic photometry with accompanying JHK(s) imaging can improve this. Whenever possible, reduced SOFI images are provided to allow this. Conclusions. Future data releases will focus on improving the automated flux calibration of the data products. The rapid turnaround between discovery and classification and access to reliable pipeline processed data products has allowed early science papers in the first few months of the survey.

  • Fe-based amorphous alloys as bipolar plates for PEM fuel cell
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-7753 .- 1873-2755. ; 159:1, s. 34-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two compositions of Fe-based Fe50Cr18Mo8Al2Y2C14B6 and Fe44Cr15Mo14Y2C15B6N4 amorphous alloys were developed as alternative bipolar plate material for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this paper, we present results of an investigation on the electrical, mechanical, corrosion properties and processing ability of these amorphous alloys. The combination of excellent properties indicated that Fe-based amorphous alloys could be potential candidate materials as bipolar plates in PEMFC.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 434-435, s. 237-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The corrosion properties of the Fe45−xCr18Mo14C15B6Y2Mx (with M=Al, Co, Ni, N and x=0, 2) bulk metallic glasses have been investigated in a 1M H2SO4+2ppm F− solution at 80°C with H2 and air bubbling, which simulate environments of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. The partial replacement of 2at.% Fe led to significant modification of the corrosion behavior and resulted in corrosion resistances superior to that of stainless steel.

  • Corrosion mechanism of N-containing Fe–Cr–Mo–Y–C–B bulk amorphous alloys in highly concentrated HCl solution
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Materials Science & Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-5093 .- 1873-4936. ; 449-451, s. 517-520
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Fe49Cr15.3Mo15Y2C15B3.4N0.3 (numbers indicate at.%) amorphous alloy in concentrated HCl solution was found to have a corrosion resistance of at least one order of magnitude higher than the N-free Fe-base amorphous alloy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses were performed to understand the corrosion mechanism. It was found that the enrichment of Cr oxide and the presence of MoN nitrides on the surface in the passive layer were at the origin of the high corrosion resistance of the N-containing Fe-base amorphous alloy.

  • Ingår i: Materials Science & Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-5093 .- 1873-4936. ; 449-451, s. 30-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fe- and Ni-base amorphous alloys were developed and characterized as alternative bipolar plate materials for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Lower interfacial contact resistances were obtained for the Fe-base in comparison with Ni-base alloys and particularly the N-containing Fe-base amorphous composition exhibited values almost comparable to that of stainless steel upon high compaction load. Under conditions simulating the anodic and cathodic PEMFC environments, both the Fe- and Ni-base amorphous alloys displayed higher corrosion resistance than stainless steel.

  • Nanometer-sized porous Ti-based metallic glass
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Scripta Materialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1359-6462 .- 1872-8456. ; 55:11, s. 1063-1066
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A porous Ti-based metallic glass has been fabricated by applying the principle of dealloying to the Y20Ti36Al24Co20 two-phase amorphous alloy. The initial microstructure of the two-phase glassy alloy consisted of Ti43.3Y3.7Al15.3Co37.7 and Y38.8Ti12.8Al37.1Co11.3 amorphous phases forming an interconnected structure. To fabricate the porous structure, the Y-rich phase has been selectively dissolved from the alloy using both chemical and electrochemical treatments in 0.1M HNO3 solution. The glassy nature of the porous Ti-based alloy was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy analyses.

  • Synthesis and characterization of nanometer-sized Ti-based amorphous powders
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Research. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0884-2914 .- 2044-5326. ; 22:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a simple method for preparing nanometer-sized, Ti-based amorphous powders from the Y28Ti28Al24Co20and Y36Ti20Al24Co20two-phase amorphous alloys. The initial microstructure of these rapidly quenched alloys is composed of Ti-based, amorphous, spherical, nanometer-sized particles embedded in a Y-based amorphous matrix, with particle size dependent on the alloy composition. The Ti-based powders were extracted from the two-phase amorphous alloys through selective dissolution of the Y-rich matrix in a 0.1 M HNO3solution. The powders of size ranging between 20 and 200 nm have smooth and spherical morphology, and exhibit different magnetic behavior than the bulk alloy of identical composition.

  • A metric space for Type Ia supernova spectra
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 447:2, s. 1247-1266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop a new framework for use in exploring Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) spectra. Combining principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square (PLS) analysis we are able to establish correlations between the principal components (PCs) and spectroscopic/photometric SNe Ia features. The technique was applied to similar to 120 SN and similar to 800 spectra from the Nearby Supernova Factory. The ability of PCA to group together SNe Ia with similar spectral features, already explored in previous studies, is greatly enhanced by two important modifications: (1) the initial data matrix is built using derivatives of spectra over the wavelength, which increases the weight of weak lines and discards extinction, and (2) we extract time evolution information through the use of entire spectral sequences concatenated in each line of the input data matrix. These allow us to define a stable PC parameter space which can be used to characterize synthetic SN Ia spectra by means of real SN features. Using PLS, we demonstrate that the information from important previously known spectral indicators (namely the pseudo-equivalent width of Si II 5972 angstrom/Si II 6355 angstrom and the line veloci of S II 5640 angstrom/Si II 6355 angstrom) at a given epoch is contained within the PC space and can be determined through a linear combination of the most important PCs. We also show that the PC space encompasses photometric features like B/V magnitudes, B - V colours and SALT2 parameters c and x(1). The observed colours and magnitudes, which are heavily affected by extinction, cannot be reconstructed using this technique alone. All the above-mentioned applications allowed us to construct a metric space for comparing synthetic SN Ia spectra with observations.

  • Recent EUROfusion Achievements in Support of Computationally Demanding Multiscale Fusion Physics Simulations and Integrated Modeling
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fusion Science and Technology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1536-1055 .- 1943-7641. ; 74:3, s. 186-197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2018, © 2018 The Authors. Published with license by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Integrated modeling (IM) of present experiments and future tokamak reactors requires the provision of computational resources and numerical tools capable of simulating multiscale spatial phenomena as well as fast transient events and relatively slow plasma evolution within a reasonably short computational time. Recent progress in the implementation of the new computational resources for fusion applications in Europe based on modern supercomputer technologies (supercomputer MARCONI-FUSION), in the optimization and speedup of the EU fusion-related first-principle codes, and in the development of a basis for physics codes/modules integration into a centrally maintained suite of IM tools achieved within the EUROfusion Consortium is presented. Physics phenomena that can now be reasonably modelled in various areas (core turbulence and magnetic reconnection, edge and scrape-off layer physics, radio-frequency heating and current drive, magnetohydrodynamic model, reflectometry simulations) following successful code optimizations and parallelization are briefly described. Development activities in support to IM are summarized. They include support to (1) the local deployment of the IM infrastructure and access to experimental data at various host sites, (2) the management of releases for sophisticated IM workflows involving a large number of components, and (3) the performance optimization of complex IM workflows.
