- I en dialog mellan medieforskare ur två generationer diskuteras centrala frågor kring kulturperspektivets aktuella roll i medieforskningen. Begreppet kulturalisering relateras till medialisering och mediering; det slås ett slag för mediekulturbegreppet och ett vidgat mediebegrepp prövas kritiskt. Samspelet mellan gränsdragningar och överskridanden tematiseras på olika nivåer, dels i förhållande till frågor om intermedialitet och konvergens, hybridisering och differentiering, dels beträffande medieforskningsfältets relation till närliggande fält. Även frågor om mening, tolkning, identitet, symbolinvestering och makt berörs. Författarna analyserar på detta vis en rad olika omdebatterade problem och fenomen i skärningsfältet mellan kultur- och medieforskning, går emot vissa problematiska tendenser och söker påvisa kulturperspektivets fortsatta aktualitet och fruktbarhet för att vidga och vitalisera medieforskningen.

Detta är ett tämligen outforskat område, inte minst vad gäller fenomenet ”den filmatiserade diktsamlingen”. vanligtvis diskuteras och undersöks prosaberättelsens relation till filmmediet, och mer sällan lyrikens dito. I mitt paper kommer jag att behandla två aspekter: poesi på/i film, samt filmanknytningar i lyrik. Mitt exempel begränsas för detta föredrag till Bruno K. Öijer: dels hans film Från en demons båge, dels nedslag i några av hans lyriska texter. Jag för en estetisk diskussion om hur samspelet mellan medierna fungerar, samt en diskussion om vad detta samspel är ett resultat av, med tanke på mediesamhället som kontext. Teoretiskt förankras mina resonemang i dels intermedialitetsforskning, dels bourdieuskt präglad kultursociologi.

- Kultursemiotiken per se analyserar mötet mellan kulturer. Begrepp som ego-kultur, extrakultur och icke-kultur är centrala i undersökningar som syftar till att blottlägga den självbild en kultur gör av sig själv i mötet med en annan. Dessa begrepp har paralleller på individnivå med de personliga pronomina i språket. I den uppsats jag ämnar presentera kommer jag därför att koncentrera mig på en diskussion inom ramen för kultursemiotiken om ”jagets” tillblivelse, genom ett intersektionellt prisma bestående av främst religion, nationalitet och kön, i relation till en pilotstudie av Mme de Staëls självbiografiska reseskildring från Tyskland, där hon vistades ett par månader mellan 1803 och 1804. Frågor som berörs är: Skiftar Mme de Staëls självförståelse som kvinna, protestant och intellektuell i de olika sammanträffanden hon gör i Tyskland? Hur uppfattar hon sin egen komplicerade nationella tillhörighet i dessa möten? Mme de Staëls komplexa bakgrund gör hennes självbiografiska reseskildring särskilt intressant för en kultursemiotisk analys, som syftar till att förklara hennes mångskiftande självrepresentation.

- The thesis analyses the continuously changing discourse of cultural diversity. The focus of this study is the ways in which this discourse is shaped within contemporary Swedish cultural politics in general, and how it unfolds and further changes through the specific activities performed by a cultural institution in Stockholm – Södra teatern.Where as the cultural diversity inspired cultural politics seems to be caught in the tension between defending the autonomous position of culture in society and arguing for the supposed positive integrative consequences of such a perspective the Södra teatern mirrors a similar complexity in their ways of performing cultural diversity. This complexity is expressed through the three aspects of cultural diversity the thesis analyses – the real, the good and the cool cultural diversity. Each of the three aspects expresses a search for authenticity as well as a resistance towards the very same notion; a belief in the enlightenment of knowledge at the same time as the content of the very same knowledge is questioned; and finally that ethnic differences some times is enforced through utterances that stresses tradition where as the supposed hybrid forms in other situations is celebrated.The three aspects of cultural diversity analysed here all express how cultural diversity works as a hyper complex concept within cultural policy where no single possible meaning erases other potential meanings. On the contrary: different and even contradictory meanings of the concept exist side by side. Thus the thesis argues that the discourse of cultural diversity expresses a hyper complex problem.

- Based on the interdisciplinary experience of a Swedish research committee, this article discusses critical conceptual issues raised by the current debate on mediatization - a concept that holds great potential to constitute a space for synthesized understandings of media-related social transformations. In contrast to other, more metaphorical constructions, mediatization can be studied empirically in systematic ways through various sub-processes that together provide a complex picture of how culture and everyday life evolve in times of media saturation. The first part of this article argues that mediatization researchers have sometimes formulated too grand claims as to mediatization's status as a unitary approach, a meta-theory or a paradigm. Such claims have led to problematic confusions around the concept and should be abandoned in favour of a more open agenda. In line with such a call for openness, the second part of the article introduces historicity, specificity and measurability as three transdisciplinary and transparadigmatic tasks for the contemporary mediatization research agenda.

Två drömspel : från Strindbergs modernism till Potters television

- This thesis studies the relations between modernism, mass culture and visual media. Using the dramatic form of the ”dream play” as focal point, it compares the drama of August Strindberg with the television series of Dennis Potter, and the theories of Walter Benjamin with those of Raymond Williams. The purpose is to elucidate how categories of high and low operate within different cultural fields (avant-garde theatre and quality television), and different strands of cultural theory (the Frankfurt school and Cultural Studies).Strindberg’s dreamplays, in particular To Damascus (1898) and A Dreamplay (1901), are introduced by using models from the field theory of Pierre Bourdieu. The genesis and reception of the dreamplays are thus related to oppositions between commercial and independent production in the Swedish cultural field, and how these tensions are refracted in the form and themes of the plays. Attention then turns to Benjamin’s and Williams’ early work on drama. Benjamin’s analysis of allegory is related to his conception of mass culture as dream world. William’s analysis of naturalism to his conception of television as technology and cultural form. Their allusions to Strindberg’s dreamplays are used to raise specific questions about the media: how does modern art anticipate new technologies? How has 20th century cultural theory been affected by film and television?Potter’s work, in particular The Singing Detective (1986), is finally considered in the light of these themes. The characteristics of Potter’s drama (non-naturalism, interior drama) are compared to Strindberg’s, and to analytical concepts developed by Williams (flow, the enclosed room). Benjamin’s interpretations of allegory and mass culture are compared to Potter’s use of popular songs and detective conventions. Potter’s position in relation to the opposition between commercial and public service television, and the conception of high and low in Potter’s texts, are related to the logic of cultural fields.

- Det är i år 10 år sedan ACSIS började sin verksamhet efter några års förarbeten. Advanced Cultural Studies Institute of Sweden inrättades våren 2002 som en särskild arbetsenhet inom Linköpings universitet – ett självständigt nationellt centrum med anknytningsavtal till Institutionen för samhällsutveckling och kultur och som under hela den här tioårsperioden varit samlokaliserat med Tema kultur och samhälle. Den här skriften ger en överblick av vad ACSIS har varit under det här decenniet.ACSIS inrättades i syfte att utveckla spetsforskning och högre utbildning inom tvärvetenskaplig kulturforskning. ACSIS har utvecklat kontakter och verksamheter i alla universitetsstäder som en länkande, drivande och kvalitetshöjande motor och mötesplats för kulturstudier i Sverige, ett vitalt forskningsfällt som har den spänningsfyllda triangeln mening - identitet - makt som ett viktigt nav. Sådana kulturstudier förekommer inom snart sagt alla områden – inte som någon avgränsad disciplin utan som ett tvärvetenskapligt fält, där nya fenomen, metoder och teorier utprövas i gränsområdena mellan etablerade ämnen och traditioner. Det som förenar är strävan att undersöka aktuella frågor om mening, identitet och makt genom kontextualiserande tolkningar, överskridande dialoger och reflexiv kritik.ACSIS har verkat för att "avancera" kulturstudierna, alltså föra ut dem och stärka deras positioner, bistå med kommunikativa och teoriutvecklande resurser, och samtidigt höja kvaliteten på de tvärvetenskapliga ansatser som idag finns utspridda över landet. ACSIS bildar länkar mellan olika ämnen och traditioner som annars sällan har kontakt, men som måste samverka för att aktuella samhällsproblem och kulturprocesser ska kunna hanteras. ACSIS öppnar också kanaler mellan orter som annars riskerar att isoleras från varandra i defensiv konkurrens. ACSIS är således självt ett gränslandsprojekt, som med nya grepp utforskar kulturens gränsländer och samtidigt öppnar gränspassager för kulturstudierna.Ett tioårsjubileum är ett lämpligt tillfälle att blicka både tillbaka på vad som har åstadkommits under åren och framåt genom att fundera på hur verksamheten kan utvecklas i framtiden. Jubileet sammanfaller också med flera förändringar: byte av föreståndare, avslutning av det stora STINT-utbytet med University of Western Sydney och flytt till nya lokaler. Om den här skriften står för tillbakablickandet kan det förhoppningsvis bli gott om möjligheter att se framåt under de aktiviteter som ACSIS genomför i samband med jubileet. - In modernity, culture is everywhere. So is cultural studies, it seems. But cultural studies needs to be advanced, in two senses: to be promoted but also to be ameliorated. Culture is focal in late modern societies, and should be so in research. New encounters and innovative modes of study are necessary to deal with the new kinds of problems posed by current cultural developments. The international and interdisciplinary field of cultural studies well deserves to be spread, but also longs for regenerative initiatives. There is now in Sweden an option to take a decisive step in this direction.This is what this report argues for.

Advancing Cultural Studies in Sweden : An Infrastructural Initiative

- Societal changes make culture increasingly central but also problematise it. New per-spectives are needed to meet these challenges. The international field of cultural studies is a promising effort to answer these challenges and vitalise cultural research. Sweden may make a significant and indeed unique contribution to this effort, but im-portant steps remain to be taken with this purpose. One such step would be to install a new national-international research institute on a higher level, in order to connect disciplines, universities and regions, and push innovative developments forward.Against such a background, this report leads up to an outline of a proposed new Advanced Cultural Studies Institute of Sweden (ACSIS). This is yet only a proposal, writ-ten at a time when ACSIS yet only exists as an imaginary utopia – though living with an extraordinary vitality in the minds of a wide intellectual network of committed scholars. Funding is presently being sought for, but it is not yet decided in what exact manner the ideas presented here will eventually be made real. The formulation of tasks, organisation and budget is thus yet a hypothetical model.Still, this bold adventure has reached a long way since its first inception. The ACSIS has long been an attractive dream for me and for many of my colleagues among cultural researchers. It is a very great pleasure to see the plans crystallised thus far, as the journey towards an ACSIS has reached its last and decisive phase.The report results from a committee work funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercen-tenary Foundation (Riksbankens jubileumsfond), and the Swedish Council for Re-search in the Humanities and Social Sciences (Humanistisk-samhällsvetenskapliga forskningsrådet). I had the great pleasure to work together with Svante Beckman, Ulf Hannerz, Lisbeth Larsson, Britta Lundgren, Orvar Löfgren, Ove Sernhede and Ulf Lindberg, and was reliably assisted by Åsa Bäckström. The group started working in January 2000, with a series of working meetings. Each member of the group has also had intense discussions of the basic ideas with other Swedish and international scholars, in meetings and by personal communication.Many therefore deserve warm thanks for making this report possible. The material and mental support by the two research funding bodies was essential, as was the generous and always stimulating collaboration in the committee. - The result is that we tend to remain marginalised internationally. In conferences as well as in publications, our voices count less than those from the US-UK axis. What we say feels less central to the concerns of the cultural studies field at large, since we cannot express ourselves quite as fluently as others, and our frames of reference are slightly out of tune with what counts as important in London or Chicago. We might be added as an exotic spice now and then, illustrating some less relevant point, before we are again put aside, safely placed outside the doxa of what really matters. Only some chosen few of us are allowed to remain in the centre of the field. Almost without exception, that only goes for those of us who either have Anglo-American roots, have studied or worked in Birmingham or Duke, or have done extensive work about Anglo-American culture. This is also some of the strategies we do use in order to step out of our domestic isolation. It may work, but it costs time and money, and deprives the transnational field of certain voices and insights that might have been contributed by those who refuse or are unable to make those concessions. There is no way for us to write from our home countries, using domestic empirical sources and still become internationally acknowledged. This can happen to a Brit or American, whose work can always suddenly be taken up and be made relevant to the field at large.

Bridging gaps : ten crosscurrents in media studies

- Once upon a time, it was popular to declare war between opposing camps in media studies. The struggle between “critical theory” and “mass communications” or later between “cultural studies” and “political economy” in UK and US media research was one such example. In other parts of the world, those polarities were much less dominant, and today many old gaps seem to have been bridged. Several old and new issues are still contested and need to be worked through, but I do not think that this should be done in terms of gaps and divides. When a field is divided by deep clefts, a productive strategy is often to seek third positions from where to mediate the two and see how they offer models of understanding that may enrich and supplement each other, if dialectically reinterpreted from a less reductive standpoint. Today, even that may be an outdated mode of reasoning, since one may argue that there is not any longer two firm and distinct camps in media studies, but rather a dynamically interweaving set of currents that sometimes reinforce, sometimes contradict each other.I will here outline five pair of trends that have been particularly influential and inspiring during the last decades, and that are particularly relevant to the future directions of media research. None of them is a real turn, implying any total change in all of media studies. Instead, they form double streams that may run in parallel, feed into each other, or become crosscurrents whose intersections create tensions and contradictions. Each pair is in some sense paradoxical and contradictory, pointing out key ambivalences and contradictions in the present situation. This is therefore an alternative to thinking in terms of gaps or borders. As for gaps, I do not believe there is anymore one dominant dichotomy that divides the field. It is more relevant to talk of borders and not least of hybrid borderlands, but these pairs are too complexly intertwined to even make such a term useful. Each current has been contested and is deeply ambiguous, and any precise dating is difficult since they have developed in steps that differ between countries.[i]My point here is threefold. A first goal is to lift up ten trends that, though contestable, all deserve to be taken seriously as impulses to renew and revitalize media studies. Secondly, I will argue that great surplus insights for media studies are to be won by reading them in relation to each other, acknowledging their intersections instead of isolating them from each other. While each current may be familiar, they are rarely sufficiently juxtaposed, though there are important interrelations between these media studies discourses. Taken together, it becomes clear how much they mutually constitute each other and offer a richer understanding of the challenges that lie ahead, by posing challenging questions concerning the scope and definition of media and media studies. Third, this dialogic exercise indicates that the usual divides are increasingly less relevant in the new media landscape and intellectual scene, both being characterized by fluidity and hybridization.[i] These currents were first outlined in a brief presentation at the interdisciplinary workshop on ‘Bridging Methodology Gaps, Building Institutional Bridges’, organized by the European Science Foundation (ESF) at the University of London, UK, 10-12 December 2007.

- Inspired by Walter Benjamin-s classical Arcades Project, Consuming Media is a pioneering exploration of the interface between communication, shopping and everyday life. Based on a six-year -intersectional- ethnographic fieldwork by over a dozen scholars on a specific site, it analyses the links between media and consumption in contemporary urban culture and public space. The book is organized into ten chapters. The first two chapters introduce key ideas and theories. In the next four chapters, four large media circuits are scrutinized. The final four chapters discuss the results in terms of intermedial relations, time, space and power. The book thus offers a new foundation for understanding media use, consumption and the fate of urban public space in late modernity

- Inspired by Walter Benjamin's classical Arcades Project, the authors explore the interface between communication, shopping and everyday life. Based on a six-year study by over a dozen scholars on a specific site, the book analyses the links between power, media and consumption in contemporary urban culture. Four main media circuits are examined - print media, media images, sound and motion, and hardware machines - to assess how media texts and technologies are selected, purchased and used. Exploring the relations between different media, cultural citizenship and power relations of public space, the book presents an ethnography of globalization and develops a new approach to understanding media consumption.

- To identify a set of defining traits and goals of the cultural studies field is the task of this intervention. It begins by investigating how leading actors in this field today define it: the Association for Cultural Studies and the journals Cultural Studies, the European Journal of Cultural Studies, the International Journal of Cultural Studies, and Inter-Asian Cultural Studies. Three main tropes are identified: diversity, contextualization and critique. Each of them has partly succeeded but other aims remain unfulfilled. Two central tasks are formulated. First, cultural studies needs a reinforced critical reflexivity to explain what it is and why it is needed as a driving force for interactive diversity, contextualizing meaning making and communicative critique. Second, the field needs to be on high alert, stepping forward and responding fast and loud to the current totalitarian threats against sustainable and resilient academic knowledge production. © The Author(s) 2020.
