  • Uncertainty quantification for proton-proton fusion in chiral effective field theory
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 760, s. 584-589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compute the S-factor of the proton-proton (pp) fusion reaction using chiral effective field theory (chi EFT) up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and perform a rigorous uncertainty analysis of the results. We quantify the uncertainties due to (i) the computational method used to compute the pp cross section in momentum space, (ii) the statistical uncertainties in the low-energy coupling constants of chi EFT, (iii) the systematic uncertainty due to the chi EFT cutoff, and (iv) systematic variations in the database used to calibrate the nucleon-nucleon interaction. We also examine the robustness of the polynomial extrapolation procedure, which is commonly used to extract the threshold S-factor and its energy-derivatives. By performing a statistical analysis of the polynomial fit of the energy-dependent S-factor at several different energy intervals, we eliminate a systematic uncertainty that can arise from the choice of the fit interval in our calculations. In addition, we explore the statistical correlations between the S-factor and few-nucleon observables such as the binding energies and point-proton radii of H-2,H-3 and He-3 as well as the D-state probability and quadrupole moment of H-2, and the beta-decay of 3H. We find that, with the state-of-the-art optimization of the nuclear Hamiltonian, the statistical uncertainty in the threshold S-factor cannot be reduced beyond 0.7%.

  • STUDY OF THE O-15(2p,gamma)Ne-17 CROSS SECTION BY COULOMB DISSOCIATION OF Ne-17 FOR THE rp PROCESS OF NUCLEOSYNTHESIS
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica, Series B.. - 1509-5770 .- 0587-4254. ; 45:2, s. 229-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The O-15(2p, gamma)Ne-17 cross section has been studied by the inverse reaction, the Coulomb dissociation of Ne-17. The experiment has been performed at the GSI. The Ne-17 excitation energy prior to decay has been reconstructed by using the invariant-mass method. The preliminary differential and integral Coulomb dissociation cross sections (sigma(Coul)) have been extracted, which provide a photoabsorption (sigma(photo)) and a radiative capture cross section (sigma(cap)). Additionally, important information about the Ne-17 nuclear structure will be obtained. The analysis is in progress.

  • Lithium isotopes beyond the drip line
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 666:5, s. 430-434
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The unbound isotopes 10Li, 12Li and 13Li have been observed after nucleon-knockout reactions at relativistic energies with 11Li and 14Be beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The channels , and were analysed in the ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI. The 10Li data confirm earlier findings, while the 12Li and 13Li nuclei were observed for the first time. The relative-energy spectrum shows that the ground state of 12Li can be described as a virtual s-state with a scattering length of -13.7(1.6) fm. A broad energy spectrum was found for the channel. Based on the assumption that the relative-energy spectrum is dominated by a correlated background presumably stemming from initial correlations in the 14Be ground-state, evidence for a 13Li resonance at 1.47(31) MeV above the threshold with a width around 2 MeV has been found.

  • Properties of the 7He ground state from 8He neutron knockout
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 679:3, s. 191-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The unbound nucleus 7He, produced in neutron-knockout reactions with a 240 MeV/u 8He beam in a liquid-hydrogen target, has been studied in an experiment at the ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI. From an R-matrix analysis the resonance parameters for 7He as well as the spectroscopic factor for the 6He(0+) + n configuration in its ground-state have been obtained. The spectroscopic factor is 0.61 confirming that 7He is not a pure single-particle state. An analysis of 5He data from neutron-knockout reactions of 6He in a carbon target reveals the presence of an s-wave component at low energies in the α+n relative energy spectrum. A possible low-lying exited state in 7He observed in neutron knockout data from 8He in a carbon target and tentatively interpreted as a Iπ=1/2− state, could not be observed in the present experiment. Possible explanations of the shape difference between the 7He resonance obtained in the two knockout reactions are discussed in terms of target-dependence or different reaction mechanisms at relativistic energies.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - 1434-601X .- 1434-6001. ; 11:3, s. 279-284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The beta -decays of the neutron-rich nuclei Be-12 and Ne-29 have been studied. The statistical correlations between the almost identical half-lives of Be-12 and its daughter B-12 are analysed for a large sample of Be-12 decay data. Stringent mutual bounds are obtained on the parameter set, leading to a precise determination of the Be-12 half-life of 21.50 +/- 0.04 ms. From a simultaneous detection of beta -particles and neutrons from the decay of Ne-29 the neutron emission probability, P-n, is determined to 17 +/- 5%. No indication of two-neutron emission is seen from this nucleus. An upper limit of 2.2% (90% confidence level) is established for P-2n.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 82:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spectra of the Be-9(e, e') reaction have been measured at the Superconducting Darmstadt Electron Linear Accelerator at an electron energy of E-0 = 73 MeV and scattering angles of 93 degrees and 141 degrees with high-energy resolution up to excitation energies of E-x = 8 MeV. The astrophysically relevant resonance parameters of the first excited 1/2(+) state of Be-9 have been extracted in a one-level approximation of R-matrix theory, resulting in resonance energy E-R = 1.748(6) MeV and width Gamma(R) = 274(8) keV, which are in good agreement with the latest Be-9(gamma, n) experiment but with considerably improved uncertainties. However, the reduced B(E1) transition strength deduced from an extrapolation of the (e, e') data to the photon point is smaller by a factor of two. Implications of the new results for possible production of C-12 in neutron-rich astrophysical scenarios are discussed.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - 2469-9926 .- 2469-9934 .- 1050-2947. ; 79:1, s. 012707-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that the convergence behavior of the many-body numerical diagonalization scheme for strongly interacting bosons in a trap can be significantly improved by the Lee-Suzuki method adapted from nuclear physics: One can construct an effective interaction that acts in a space much smaller than the original Hilbert space. In particular for short-ranged forces and strong correlations, the method offers a good estimate of the energy and the excitation spectrum, at a computational cost several orders of magnitude smaller than that required by the standard method.

  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-601X .- 1434-6001. ; 25, s. 343-346
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Breakup reactions were used to study the ground-state configuration of the neutron-rich isotope O-23. The O-22 fragments produced in one-nucleon removal from O-23 at 938 MeV/nucleon in a carbon target were detected in coincidence with de-exciting gamma rays, allowing to discern between 220 ground-state and excited-states contributions. From the comparison of exclusive experimental momentum distributions for the one-neutron removal channel to theoretical momentum distributions calculated in an Eikonal model for the knockout process, and spin and parity assignment of I-pi = 1/2(+) was deduced for the 230 ground state. This result solved the existent experimental discrepancy.

  • Quantum magnetism in strongly interacting one-dimensional spinor Bose systems
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322 .- 2045-2322. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Strongly interacting one-dimensional quantum systems often behave in a manner that is distinctly different from their higher-dimensional counterparts. When a particle attempts to move in a one-dimensional environment it will unavoidably have to interact and 'push' other particles in order to execute a pattern of motion, irrespective of whether the particles are fermions or bosons. A present frontier in both theory and experiment are mixed systems of different species and/or particles with multiple internal degrees of freedom. Here we consider trapped two-component bosons with short-range inter-species interactions much larger than their intra-species interactions and show that they have novel energetic and magnetic properties. In the strongly interacting regime, these systems have energies that are fractions of the basic harmonic oscillator trap quantum and have spatially separated ground states with manifestly ferromagnetic wave functions. Furthermore, we predict excited states that have perfect antiferromagnetic ordering. This holds for both balanced and imbalanced systems, and we show that it is a generic feature as one crosses from few-to many-body systems.

  • Bayesian predictions for A=6 nuclei using eigenvector continuation emulators
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 105:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We make ab initio predictions for the A=6 nuclear level scheme based on two- and three-nucleon interactions up to next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory (χEFT). We utilize eigenvector continuation and Bayesian methods to quantify uncertainties stemming from the many-body method, the χEFT truncation, and the low-energy constants of the nuclear interaction. The construction and validation of emulators is made possible via the development of jupiterncsm - a new M-scheme no-core shell model code that uses on-the-fly Hamiltonian matrix construction for efficient, single-node computations up to Nmax=10 for Li6. We find a slight underbinding of He6 and Li6, although consistent with experimental data given our theoretical error bars. As a result of incorporating correlated χEFT-truncation errors we find more precise predictions (smaller error bars) for separation energies: Sd(Li6)=0.89±0.44MeV, S2n(He6)=0.20±0.60MeV, and for the beta decay Q value: Qβ-(He6)=3.71±0.65MeV. We conclude that our error bars can potentially be reduced further by extending the model space used by jupiterncsm.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 104:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Normal ordering provides an approach to approximate three-body forces as effective two-body operators and it is therefore an important tool in many-body calculations with realistic nuclear interactions. The corresponding neglect of certain three-body terms in the normal-ordered Hamiltonian is known to influence translational invariance, although the magnitude of this effect has not yet been systematically quantified. In this paper we study in particular the normal-ordering two-body approximation applied to a single harmonic-oscillator reference state. We explicate the breaking of translational invariance and demonstrate the magnitude of the approximation error as a function of model space parameters for He-4 and O-16 by performing full no-core shell-model calculations with and without three-nucleon forces. We combine two different diagnostics to better monitor the breaking of translational invariance. While the center-of-mass effect is shown to become potentially very large for He-4, it is also shown to be much smaller for O-16 although full convergence is not reached. These tools can be easily implemented in studies using other many-body frameworks and bases.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 91:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the goal of developing predictive ab initio capability for light and medium-mass nuclei, two-nucleon and three-nucleon forces from chiral effective field theory are optimized simultaneously to low-energy nucleon-nucleon scattering data, as well as binding energies and radii of few-nucleon systems and selected isotopes of carbon and oxygen. Coupled-cluster calculations based on this interaction, named NNLOsat, yield accurate binding energies and radii of nuclei up to Ca-40, and are consistent with the empirical saturation point of symmetric nuclear matter. In addition, the low-lying collective J(pi) = 3(-) states in O-16 and 40Ca are described accurately, while spectra for selected p- and sd-shell nuclei are in reasonable agreement with experiment.

  • Optimized Chiral Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 110:19, s. Art. no. 192502-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We optimize the nucleon-nucleon interaction from chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). The resulting new chiral force NNLOopt yields chi(2) approximate to 1 per degree of freedom for laboratory energies below approximately 125 MeV. In the A = 3, 4 nucleon systems, the contributions of three-nucleon forces are smaller than for previous parametrizations of chiral interactions. We use NNLOopt to study properties of key nuclei and neutron matter, and we demonstrate that many aspects of nuclear structure can be understood in terms of this nucleon-nucleon interaction, without explicitly invoking three-nucleon forces.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G-Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 46:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Theoretical models of the strong nuclear interaction contain unknown coupling constants (parameters) that must be determined using a pool of calibration data. In cases where the models are complex, leading to time consuming calculations, it is particularly challenging to systematically search the corresponding parameter domain for the best fit to the data. In this paper, we explore the prospect of applying Bayesian optimization to constrain the coupling constants in chiral effective field theory descriptions of the nuclear interaction. We find that Bayesian optimization performs rather well with low-dimensional parameter domains and foresee that it can be particularly useful for optimization of a smaller set of coupling constants. A specific example could be the determination of leading three-nucleon forces using data from finite nuclei or three-nucleon scattering experiments.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 79:2, s. 021303(R)-

    • Recently, charge radii and ground-state electromagnetic moments of Li and Be isotopes were measured precisely. We have performed large-scale ab initio no-core shell model calculations for these isotopes using high-precision nucleon-nucleon potentials. The isotopic trends of our computed charge radii and quadrupole and magnetic-dipole moments are in good agreement with experimental results with the exception of the 11Li charge radius. The magnetic moments are in particular well described, whereas the absolute magnitudes of the quadrupole moments are about 10% too small. The small magnitude of the 6Li quadrupole moment is reproduced, and with the CD-Bonn NN potential, also its correct sign.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). ; 77:2, s. 024301-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate the existence of multiple converging sequences in the ab initio no-core shell model. By examining the underlying theory of effective operators, we expose the physical foundations for the alternative pathways to convergence. This leads us to propose a revised strategy for evaluating effective interactions for A-body calculations in restricted model spaces. We suggest that this strategy is particularly useful for applications to nuclear processes in which states of both parities are used simultaneously, such as for transition rates. We demonstrate the utility of our strategy with large-scale calculations in light nuclei.

  • Large-scale exact diagonalizations reveal low-momentum scales of nuclei
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 97:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ab initio methods aim to solve the nuclear many-body problem with controlled approximations. Virtually exact numerical solutions for realistic interactions can only be obtained for certain special cases such as few-nucleon systems. Here we extend the reach of exact diagonalization methods to handle model spaces with dimension exceeding 10(10) on a single compute node. This allows us to perform no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations for Li-6 in model spaces up to N-max = 22 and to reveal the He-4+d halo structure of this nucleus. Still, the use of a finite harmonic-oscillator basis implies truncations in both infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) length scales. These truncations impose finite-size corrections on observables computed in this basis. We perform IR extrapolations of energies and radii computed in the NCSM and with the coupled-cluster method at several fixed UV cutoffs. It is shown that this strategy enables information gain also from data that is not fully UV converged. IR extrapolations improve the accuracy of relevant bound-state observables for a range of UV cutoffs, thus making them profitable tools. We relate the momentum scale that governs the exponential IR convergence to the threshold energy for the first open decay channel. Using large-scale NCSM calculations we numerically verify this small-momentum scale of finite nuclei.

    • A first-principles description of nuclear systems along the drip lines presents a substantial theoretical and computational challenge. In this paper, we discuss the nuclear theory roadmap, some of the key theoretical approaches, and present selected results with a focus on long isotopic chains. An important conclusion, which consistently emerges from these theoretical analyses, is that three-nucleon forces are crucial for both global nuclear properties and detailed nuclear structure, and that many-body correlations due to the coupling to the particle continuum are essential as one approaches particle drip lines. In the quest for a comprehensive nuclear theory, high performance computing plays a key role.

  • On the Few-Body Character of Light Exotic Nuclei - Analytical Studies of Electromagnetic Processes Involving Loosely Bound Systems
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The few-body character of loosely bound nuclei along the drip lines is studied within an analytical approach. It is argued that the clusterization of these systems leads to a modification of the normal phase space distribution of fragment momenta in breakup reactions. In this context, it is shown how correlations in the initial state can be taken into account when analyzing invariant mass spectra. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the bound state structure of Borromean systems is reflected in the electric dipole strength function, and that the accumulation of strength at low energies is mainly an effect of the small binding energy and large intercluster distances. Consequently, important information concerning the ground state structure of two-neutron halo nuclei can be extracted from electromagnetic dissociation experiments, and results are shown for 6He, 11Li and 14Be. It is pointed out that the existing data sets for 11Li and 14Be are, to a large extent, contradictory. In addition, the 14Be mass should be remeasured. Finally, the interesting proton halo candidate 8B is studied, and the importance of both two- and three-body dynamics is discussed. In connection to this problem, two novel methods to extract astrophysically interesting information from electromagnetic dissociation experiments are proposed.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Few- and many-fermion systems on the verge of stability, and consisting of strongly interacting particles, appear in many areas of physics. The theoretical modeling of such systems is a very difficult problem. In this work we present a theoretical framework that is based on the rigged Hilbert space formulation. The few-body problem is solved by exact diagonalization using a basis in which bound, resonant, and non-resonant scattering states are included on an equal footing. Current experiments with ultracold atoms offer a fascinating opportunity to study universal properties of few-body systems with a high degree of control over parameters such as the external trap geometry, the number of particles, and even the interaction strength. In particular, particles can be allowed to tunnel out of the trap by applying a magnetic-field gradient that effectively lowers the potential barrier. The result is a tunable open quantum system that allows detailed studies of the tunneling mechanism. In this Paper we introduce our method and present results for the decay rate of two distinguishable fermions in a one-dimensional trap as a function of the interaction strength. In particular, we present for the first time several technical and numerical details of our approach, recently published in Lundmark et al. (Phys Rev A 91:041601, 2015). We also show results from a careful analysis of the numerical convergence.

    • We study low-lying states of even carbon isotopes in the range A = 10-20 within the large-scale no-core shell model. Using several accurate nucleon-nucleon (NN) as well as NN plus three-nucleon (NNN) interactions, we calculate excitation energies of the lowest 2(+) state, the electromagnetic B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) transition rates, and the 2(1)(+) quadrupole moments as well as selected electromagnetic transitions among other states. Recent experimental campaigns to measure 2(+)-state lifetimes indicate an interesting evolution of nuclear structure that pose a challenge to reproduce theoretically from first principles. Our calculations do not include any effective charges or other fitting parameters. However, calculated results extrapolated to infinite model spaces are also presented. The model-dependence of those results is discussed. Overall, we find good agreement with the experimentally observed trends, although our extrapolated B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) value for C-16 is lower compared to the most recent measurements. Relative transition strengths from higher excited states are investigated and the influence of NNN forces is discussed. In particular for 16C we find a remarkable sensitivity of the transition rates from higher excited states to the details of the nuclear interactions.

In the spirit of this workshop we will also mention the new development of the NCSM formalism to describe open channels and to approach the problem of nuclear reactions. Finally, we will illustrate the universality of the many-body problem by presenting the recent adaptation of the NCSM effective-interaction approach to study the many-boson problem in an external trapping potential with short-range interactions. This article is based on the presentation by C. Forssén at the Fifth Workshop on Critical Stability, Erice, Sicily.

    • The ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) is a well-established theoretical framework aimed at an exact description of nuclear structure starting from high-precision interactions between the nucleons. In the NCSM we consider a system of A point-like, non-relativistic nucleons that interact by realistic inter-nucleon interactions. We consider two-nucleon interactions that reproduce nucleon-nucleon phase shifts with high precision, typically up to 350 MeV lab energy. We can also include three-nucleon interactions with terms, e.g., related to two-pion exchanges with an intermediate delta excitation. Both semi-phenomenological potentials, based on meson-exchange models, as well as modern chiral interactions can be considered. The performance of the NCSM within nuclear physics will be exemplified by showing results from studies of light nuclei. Major challenges in the future development of the method will be outlined.
