  • Places, spaces and encounters with nature–socio-material discourses in Swedish preschools
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Early Years Education. - : Routledge. - 0966-9760 .- 1469-8463.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates views and discourses on outdoor play in preschool teachers talks about their playgrounds and outdoor practices in Swedish preschools. Included were a strategic sample of teachers from newer, larger preschool facilities with more programmed outdoor space, and teachers from older, more traditional facilities containing more nature. Through interviews with 38 teachers at 21 preschools and a thematic analysis inspired by socio-material theory, we identified three main themes: The meanings and limits of free outdoor play, the view on nature and children’s encounters with nature, and dangers and risks in the playground. Within these themes, we show how the teachers’ views construct discourses related to the outdoor educational places and spaces that are available. Furthermore, changes in preschool curricula as well as in the playground material and design are active agents in constructing discourses on outdoor play, including risks and limitations, beyond teachers’ own beliefs on children’s needs.

  • Med accelerometrar kan fysisk aktivitet mätas objektivt- Snabb metodutveckling, men mer kompetens krävs för användning fullt ut i klinisk praxis : Physical Activity Measured With Accelerometers
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - 1652-7518. ; 116
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of accelerometers has revolutionized measurement of physical activity, and they are used to a large extent in research and have started to be implemented into clinical settings. However, achievement of reliable outcomes requires good methodological knowledge and skills by the user. Otherwise, significant measurement errors may occur, interfering with assessment of the physical activity level in the population, group differences, associations with health parameters or effect of treatments. This paper by the Swedish Network for Objective Measurement of Movement (NORM) provides an overview of physical activity measurement including sections of data collection, processing of raw data into useful metrics and statistical analysis. It targets users of accelerometer in research, health care and national surveys.

  • Towards a more sustainable future: simple and effective recommendations to integrate planetary health into education
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Lancet Planetary Health. - 2542-5196. ; 7:10
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This Personal View presents recommendations aimed at integrating planetary health into various stages of education, which are simple but effective, and designed with teachers in training and those who have not yet considered how to incorporate UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development into their teaching practice. However, the constantly evolving nature of the Education for Sustainable Development programme must be recognised, and the importance of being able to adapt teaching methods to meet the changing needs of students as they progress through their educational journey should be highlighted. Therefore, this Personal View considers the cognitive, social, and ethical evolution of students and offers specific recommendations for preschool, primary, secondary, and university education levels. We recommend that educators should focus on teaching students to critically evaluate data on sustainability and to develop innovative solutions to environmental challenges. We also highlight the importance of incorporating practical projects, using active methods that promote skills related to caring for the planet, or the importance of situated learning that attends to the particularities of each context. In this way, students can develop skills and values that contribute to a more sustainable future. The recommendations made here aim to provide educators and researchers with simple but effective ways to integrate planetary health into education.

  • Unveiling Connections: A Thorough Analysis of Sustainable Development Goals Integration within the Spanish Physical Education Curriculum
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Education Sciences. - 2227-7102. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyses the relationship between the Physical Education (PE) curriculum in Secondary Education in Spain and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Physical Education curriculum of Compulsory Secondary Education, as well as the complementary materials, were analysed through document analysis. Although there is no explicit relationship, the analysis reveals links between curricular elements and SDGs targets, particularly with SDG 4 (Quality Education), 3 (Health and Well-being), and 5 (Gender Equality). Other SDGs, such as 10 (Reducing Inequalities) and 12 (Responsible Consumption), are less related. The social dimension of sustainable development is most closely linked to PE. A historical analysis of the treatment of sustainable development in PE curricula in Spain is also presented, examining how they have evolved over time. The manuscript helps clarify how teachers and researchers can mobilize competencies to address global challenges in students' lives as individuals and world citizens, fostering commitment and social responsibility. Furthermore, this work highlights the importance of integrating the SDGs into education and how PE can be a key tool in this process.

  • Physical Literacy in Europe: The Current State of Implementation in Research, Practice, and Policy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Exercise Science and Fitness. - : Elsevier BV. - 1728-869X .- 2226-5104. ; 21:1, s. 165-176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The holistic concept of physical literacy (PL) embraces different person-centered qualities (physical, cognitive, affective/psychological) necessary to lead physically active lifestyles. PL has recently gained increasing attention globally and Europe is no exception. However, scientific endeavors summarizing the current state of PL in Europe are lacking. Therefore, the goal of this study was to comprehensively assess and compare the implementation of PL in research, policy, and practice across the continent. We assembled a panel of experts representing 25 European countries. Employing a complementary mixed-methods design, the experts first prepared reviews about the current state of PL in their countries (categories: research, practice/policy). The reviews underwent comparative document analysis ensuring a transnational foureyes principle. For re-validation purposes, the representatives completed a quantitative survey with questions reflecting the inductive themes from the document analysis. The document analysis resulted in ten disjunct themes (related to “concept”, “research”, “practice/policy”, “future/prospect”) and yielded a heterogenous PL situation in Europe. The implementation state was strongly linked to conceptual discussions (e.g., existence of competing approaches), linguistic issues (e.g., translations), and country-specific traditions. Despite growing scholarly attention, PL hesitantly permeates practice and policy in most countries. Nevertheless, the experts largely anticipate increasing popularity of PL for the future. Despite the heterogeneous situation across Europe, the analysis has uncovered similarities among the countries, such as the presence of established yet not identical concept. Research should intensify academic activities (conceptuallinguistic elaborations, empirical work) before PL may gain further access into practical and political spheres in the long term.

  • Accelerometer-measured pattern of sedentary time and physical activity among adolescents in a multicultural area characterized by low socioeconomic status
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0334-0139 .- 2191-0278. ; 30:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE:The aim of this cross-sectional study was to describe and analyze accelerometer-measured sedentary time and physical activity (PA) among adolescents in a multicultural area characterized by low socioeconomic status (SES).METHOD:Seventh-graders (n=114 (girls n=66), mean age: 12.8±0.8 y) were recruited from three schools in a multicultural area of the city of Gothenburg, Sweden. Sedentary time and PA were measured with ActiGraph™ accelerometers.RESULT:Of total wear-time, 70 (±6)% was sedentary, with girls being more sedentary than boys. Girls had less light PA (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) than boys. Similar patterns were shown during in-school and out-of-school hours. During wear-time, 53% had a mean of ≥60 min of MVPA per day, but only 6% of the girls and 24% of the boys were sufficiently physically active every day. Girls had more sedentary bouts of ≥10 min and fewer MVPA bouts of ≥5 min per day than boys. Those who participated in organized sports spent a mean of 15 more minutes of MVPA per day compared to those who did not. No association was observed between body mass index (BMI) and sedentary time and PA.CONCLUSION:Only a few adolescents from a Swedish multicultural area characterized by low SES met the PA recommendations every day, and girls were more sedentary and less physically active than boys. Adolescents involved in organized sports had more of MVPA per day than their non-involved peers. Sedentary time and PA were not related to BMI.

  • Changes in Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Time Across Retirement Transition as a Predictor of Self-Rated Health
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Activity and Health. - 1543-3080.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Retirement transition has shown to associate with changes in physical activity (PA) and self-rated health (SRH), but their interrelationship is less studied. The aim was to investigate changes in accelerometer measured total PA, moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and sedentary time across retirement transition as a predictor of self-rated health. Methods: Data from the Swedish Retirement Study and the Finnish Retirement and Aging study was harmonized and pooled. Data from three waves (about 12 months apart) was included: one pre-retirement (wave 1) and two post-retirement follow-ups (wave 2-3). Totally 245 participants (27% men) were included. Thigh-worn accelerometers were used to collect data for PA variables (wave 1-2), and SRH was obtained from the questionnaire (wave 1-3). Results: Between wave 1 and 2, total PA decreased with 11 (CI:-22;-1) minutes per day, MVPA was stable (0 [CI:-3;3] min), and sedentary time decreased non-significantly with 9 (CI:-20;1) minutes. SRH changed between all three waves (all, p<0.001). At pre-retirement, 10 more minutes of MVPA was associated with greater odds of better SRH when adjusting for accelerometer wear-time, cohort, sex and age, and occupational status (OR:1.11 (95%CI:1.02-1.22)). This association was no longer statistically significant when additionally adjusting for marital status, BMI, and smoking. No significant associations were observed between changes in the PA variables during retirement transition, and SRH at post-retirement follow-ups. Conclusion: This study showed a cross-sectional association between MVPA and greater odds of reporting better SRH before retirement. No longitudinal associations were observed between changes in the PA variables from before to after retirement and later change in SRH

  • Combinations of Epoch Durations and Cut-Points to Estimate Sedentary Time and Physical Activity Among Adolescents
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1091-367X .- 1532-7841. ; 21:3, s. 154-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the current study was to investigate how combinations of different epoch durations and cut-points affect the estimations of sedentary time and physical activity in adolescents. Accelerometer data from 101 adolescents were derived and 30 combinations were used to estimate sedentary time, light, moderate, vigorous, and combined moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Data were analyzed with repeated measurement analyses of variance. Large differences of sedentary time and times of different physical activity intensities were observed between 1 s and longer epoch durations using virtually all cut-points. Generally, sedentary time, moderate physical activity, vigorous physical activity, and combined moderate-to-vigorous physical activity progressively decreased, whereas light physical activity increased with longer epoch durations. The extreme differences between cut-points were large and increased with longer epoch durations for sedentary time and for all physical activity intensities except for vigorous physical activity per epoch duration. Caution is required when cross-comparing studies using different epoch durations and cut-points. To accurately register adolescents’ spontaneous intermittent physical activity behavior, short epoch durations are recommended.

  • "Couch-potatoeism" and childhood obesity: The inverse causality hypothesis
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Preventive Medicine. - : Elsevier BV. - 0091-7435 .- 1096-0260. ; 73C, s. 53-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The bulk of cross-sectional studies suggests that lower levels of physical activity are associated with childhood obesity. Although this has led to the general understanding that "couch-potatoes" are fat on account of their inactive lifestyles, cross-sectional studies do not imply causality. On the contrary, the contribution of physical activity to obesity during childhood is currently unclear, and lately, studies have suggested that "couch-potatoeism" could be the result of obesity rather than its cause. Coupled with evidence suggesting that interventions have had little effect on children's physical activity levels as well as on obesity, this inverse causality challenges the role of physical activity in childhood obesity prevention strategies.

  • Effects of an Empowerment-Based Health-Promotion School Intervention on Physical Activity and Sedentary Time among Adolescents in a Multicultural Area
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - Basel : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 15:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physical activity (PA) decreases with age, and interventions are needed to promote PA during adolescence, especially, among those in low-socioeconomic status (SES) areas. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a two-year, empowerment-based health-promotion school intervention had any effects on changes in (a) moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), (b) sedentary time (SED), (c) exercise training (ET) frequency, and (d) ET duration, among adolescents. Participants (aged 12-13 years at baseline) from one intervention school and two control schools, were recruited from a multicultural area of Sweden, characterized by low-SES. During the course of the two-year intervention, a total of 135 participants (43% boys) were included in the study. The intervention was developed and implemented as a result of cooperation and shared decision-making among the researchers and the participants. MVPA and SED were measured with accelerometers, and ET frequency and duration was self-reported at the beginning of the seventh, eighth, and ninth grade, respectively. There were no significant effects of the two-year, empowerment-based health-promotion school intervention on changes in the accelerometer-measured MVPA and SED, or the self-reported ET frequency and duration, among the adolescents. Overall, the intervention was unsuccessful at promoting PA and reducing SED. Several possible explanations for the intervention's lack of effects are discussed.

  • Exploring reasons to attend formal teaching sessions among students: A self-determination theory perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Högre Utbildning. - : Cappelen Damm AS - Cappelen Damm Akademisk. - 2000-7558. ; 11:2, s. 70-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Among students in higher education, attending formal teaching sessions might be important not only for academic achievement but also to foster human values. Despite this, the low and declining attendance rate is a growing concern in higher education. This study aimed to explore what students believe teachers could do to facilitate attendance at formal teaching sessions in the physical education part of the teacher education program in Sweden. Three focus group interviews were conducted among students aged 20 to 35 who attended the teacher education programme. The self-determination theory was used as a theoretical framework, and data were analysed and categorised using qualitative content analysis. The analysis of the interviews formed an overarching theme that intersected with four categories. The results show that teachers might facilitate attendance during formal teaching sessions by providing opportunities for students to interact with each other; match challenges with skills; be engaged, enthusiastic, and caring; and outline the value and rationale. The study’s implications for teachers are discussed in the paper.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0730-3084 .- 2168-3816. ; 92:8, s. 3-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • DigiTech is commonly used in various educational settings and physical education is not an exception. DigiTech might be a potentially rich resource for learning and used to complement traditional forms of instruction, and ideally, it arrange for opportunities to refine pedagogical strategies. However, teachers might face a number of challenges when moving from theory to practice, particularly since the realities of classrooms might introduce situations that might not have been foreseen. The purpose of this editorial is to pay attention to some previous studies that have highlighted challenges and downsides of using activity monitors in physical education. The studies calls for a critical approach towards using activity monitors in physical education.

  • How to teach about sustainable development in physical education? Examples from the perspectives of certified teachers in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Education. - 2504-284X. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Teachers have a vital role in educating and empowering students to become informed and active agents of change in promoting sustainable development (SD). Little is known what PE teachers teach about SD. The aim of the present study was to explore what certified compulsory school and upper-secondary school physical education (PE) teachers in Sweden teach about SD within their practice. An online survey was used to collect data about background information and what the PE teachers had taught about SD in PE. Data from 653 PE teachers was used and the teaching examples were analysed through thematic analysis. The analysis resulted in eight themes: Equality, inclusion, and norms, Exploring the local environment, Outdoor education and care of nature, Interdisciplinary projects, Picking waste and recycling, Sustainable bodies, Sustainable lifestyles, health and well-being, and Sustainable use of products and consumption. The findings suggest that PE can have distinct subject-specific contribution to aspects of the SD agenda, but also a role to empower students of how movement, exercise, and sport can be embedded within a broader ecological perspective. Furthermore, the described themes may open for research about what competences that are particularly relevant for PE teachers in the context of SD.

  • Integrating the Pedometer Into Physical Education: Monitoring and Evaluating Physical Activity, Pedagogical Implications, Practical Considerations, and Recommendations
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Educator. - : Sagamore Publishing, LLC. - 2160-1682. ; 76:1, s. 135-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The necessity for physical activity during physical education has gained increased and widespread attention during the last few decades. However, without monitoring mechanisms it is challenging for physical education teachers to (a) get a notion of the extent to which lessons are providing physical activity, (b) evaluate the effectiveness of efforts to increase physical activity, and (c) determine whether students are reaching the recommended 50% moderate-to-vigorous physical activity target. In this paper, we argue the advantage of physical education teachers monitoring and evaluating physical activity by integrating the pedometer into the physical education program. We also provide physical education teachers with the pedagogical implications, as well as the practical considerations and recommendations, of integrating the pedometer into physical education lessons.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - 0023-7205. ; 112:25-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During recent decades there has been a rapidly growing interest in youths’ sedentary behaviour and its association with cardio-metabolic health. Currently there is little-to-no evidence for a cross-sectional and longitudinal association between volume and pattern (bouts and breaks) of objectively measured sedentary behavior and body weight in youth. Likewise, there is little-to-no evidence for a cross-sectional association between volume and pattern of objectively measured sedentary behavior and other markers for cardio-metabolic risk in youth. However, there is sufcient evidence for a cross-sectional and longitudinal association between screen-time and body weight and blood pressure and blood lipids. Furthermore, there is evidence for a cross-sectional association between youths’ screen-time and clustered metabolic risk and insulin resistance. Overall, the level of evidence was low and, therefore, caution is required when interpreting the results. © 2015, Swedish Medical Association. All rights reserved.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Children’s physical activity and health - a research area more crucial than ever!.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate associations between participation in leisure-time organised physical activity (LTOPA) and dietary intake in a large representative sample of Swedish adolescents. Methods: The study was based on the national dietary survey Riksmaten Adolescents 2016-2017 and involved a sample of 2807 (n=1234 boys) participants aged 11-12, 14-15, and 17-18 years. Information about LTOPA and dietary intake were collected through a web questionnaire and a web based 24-hour recall method (RiksmatenFlex), respectively. For dietary intake, the following six variables were analysed: overall healthy eating index (SHEIA15) and energy-adjusted intake (g/10 MJ) of fruits, vegetables, candy, sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), and the proportion of added sugar to total energy intake (E%). Significance testing for associations between participation in LTOPA and dietary intake was performed with analysis of covariance (adjusted for parental education). Effect-sizes were reported as partial eta squared and interpreted as small (0.01), moderate (0.06), and large (0.14). Results: A total of 1886 boys and girls participated in LTOPA. The result showed that LTOPA was associated with lower SSB intake among adolescent boys and girls, higher fruit intake among boys, and lower vegetable intake among girls. The effect-sizes were small. However, LTOPA was unrelated with overall healthy eating index, candy intake, and the proportion of added sugar to total energy intake among both boys and girls. When further analysing dietary intake by weekly frequency of participation in LTOPA, including those who did not participate, few significant differences were observed. Conclusions: The study shows that LTOPA is associated with some healthy eating behaviours but there are room for improvements. Places where adolescents participate in LTOPA is therefore one important setting to promote healthy dietary habits among adolescents.

    • This study aimed to investigate associations between participation in leisure-time organised physical activity (LTOPA) and dietary intake in a large representative sample of Swedish adolescents participating in the national dietary survey Riksmaten Adolescents 2016-2017. A sample of 2807 participants aged 11-12, 14-15 and 17-18 years were included. Information about LTOPA and dietary intake were collected through questionnaires and two 24-hour recalls on the web (RiksmatenFlex). For dietary intake, overall healthy eating index, intake of fruit, vegetables, candy, sugar-sweetened beverages, and the proportion of added sugar to total energy intake were analysed. Significance-testing for associations was performed with analysis of covariance. LTOPA was associated with lower sugar-sweetened beverages intake among adolescent boys (p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.012) and girls (p = 0.007, ηp2 = 0.005), higher fruit intake among boys (p = 0.043, ηp2 = 0.003), and lower vegetable intake among girls (p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.009). However, LTOPA was unrelated to the overall healthy eating index, candy intake, and the proportion of added sugar to total energy intake (p > 0.05). LTOPA was only associated with some healthy eating behaviours, and there is much room for improvement in the diets of Swedish adolescents.

  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 106:1, s. 135-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM:The aim of this study was to measure the percentage of sedentary light and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (%MVPA) provided by physical education (PE) lessons for Swedish second, fifth and eighth grade students, aged eight, 11 and 14.METHODS:We observed 39 PE lessons and divided them into seven lesson categories: ball play, ball games, dance, fitness, playing games, orienteering and gymnastics. Physical activity (PA) during PE was estimated using accelerometers and the height and weight of the children were measured.RESULTS:We studied 149 children: 63 in the second grade, 66 in the fifth grade and 19 in the eighth grade. On average, 25% of the PE lessons were spent in MVPA and the mean %MVPA varied with the lesson content, with fitness, orienteering and playing games being the most intense. The highest %MVPA was in the fitness category, providing 33% (8-62%) for girls and 37% (7-72%) for boys. With the exception of the second grade, no significant gender differences in %MVPA were seen.CONCLUSION:The content of Swedish PE lessons affected the %MVPA in all age groups. In some content, individuals reached two-thirds of their daily PA recommendations, highlighting the potential that PE contributes to public health goals.

  • Metoder för att minska vuxnas stillasittande
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Fysioterapi. - 1653-5804. ; :2, s. 28-34

  • Objectively measured sedentary behaviour and cardio-metabolic risk in youth: a review of evidence
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Pediatrics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0340-6199 .- 1432-1076. ; 173:7, s. 845-860
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper was to review studies that examine the association between volume and pattern of objectively measured sedentary behaviour and markers of cardio-metabolic risk in youth. A search for relevant articles was conducted in PubMed and SportDiscus, and the following inclusion criteria were applied: (i) youth participants (age range 6-19); (ii) accelerometer-measured volume and/or pattern of sedentary behaviour and its association with a parts per thousand yen1 cardio-metabolic outcome; and (iii) published, in press or accepted in an English language peer-reviewed journal between January 2000 and October 2013. A total of 45 articles met the a priori criteria and, thus, were considered eligible for inclusion. Although youth accumulate approximately 6 to 8 hof daily sedentary behaviour, little evidence supports an association with individual and clustered cardio-metabolic risk when adjusted for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Conclusion: We suggest that youth should be encouraged to engage in recommended levels of MVPA and reduce excessive time spent in screen-based sedentary behaviour. Future studies should examine the association between volume and pattern of objectively measured sedentarybehaviour and cardio-metabolic risk independent of time spent in MVPA.

  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 109:9, s. 1815-1824
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate associations between participation in organised physical activity (PA), such as sport and exercise during leisure time, and objectively measured PA and sedentary time in a large representative sample of Swedish adolescents.METHODS: This study was part of the school-based cross-sectional Swedish national dietary survey Riksmaten Adolescents 2016-17. Data from 3477 adolescents aged 11-12, 14-15 and 17-18 years were used in the analyses. Participation in organised PA and parental education were reported in questionnaires. PA and sedentary time were objectively measured through accelerometry during seven consecutive days.RESULTS: Adolescents who participated in organised PA had significantly higher total PA (14%, p<0.001), more time spent on moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) (eight minutes, p<0.001) and had less sedentary time (15 minutes, p<0.001). Those who participated in organised PA were more likely to reach recommended PA levels. Total PA and MVPA did not differ by parental education among those who participated in organised PA.CONCLUSION: Adolescents who participated in organised PA were more physically active, less sedentary and more likely to reach PA recommendations than those who did not.

  • Perspectives on the integration of students with disabilities in physical education: An umbrella review of reviews published between 2010 and 2020
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Adapted Physical Activity. - : Palacky University Olomouc. - 1803-3857. ; 14:2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research regarding the integration of students with disabilities in physical education has progressively increased during the last three decades, as has the number of published reviews. The objective of this umbrella review was to synthesise findings from reviews published between 2010 and 2020 to obtain a comprehensive picture of the current literature regarding the integration of students with disabilities in physical education. Search strings were developed and the four electronic databases Educational Research Complete, ERIC, Scopus, and SportDiscus were searched to identify reviews published between January 2010 and January 2020. After removing duplicates, 117 individual documents were screened and reviewed for eligibility, and eight reviews published between 2012 and 2019 were included. These reviews included quantitative, qualitative, and mix methods research. From the reviews, to some degree, SWDs, SWODs and PETs have mixed experiences from and ambiguous attitudes towards the integration of SWDs in PE.

  • Physical Activity among Adolescents in a Swedish Multicultural Area : An Empowerment-Based Health Promotion School Intervention
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overarching aim of the present thesis was two-fold. The first aim was to describe and critically reflect upon the experiences of developing and implementing an empowerment-based school intervention, focusing on food and physical activity, involving adolescents from a Swedish multicultural area characterized by low socioeconomic status. The second aim was to investigate accelerometer-measured sedentary time and physical activity among the adolescents, and to evaluate the effects of the intervention on these variables. The two-year intervention was continually developed and implemented, as a result of cooperation and shared decision making among researchers and the participating adolescents. Data was collected in seventh, eighth and ninth grade using documentation and observation protocols, accelerometers, and questionnaires. This thesis shows the importance of acquiring a broad and deep understanding of the targeted context and the participants of the intervention, and to be open-minded when it comes to negotiating, adjusting, and reorganizing empowerment-based interventions. This thesis further shows that the participating girls accumulated more sedentary time and less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity than boys, and that approximately half of the adolescents met the physical activity recommendations. The intervention had no positive effects on sedentary time and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Finally, this thesis shows that cautiousness is warranted when cross-comparing accelerometer-based studies with different epoch durations and cut-points.

  • Physical Literacy Assessment: A Conceptualization and Tools
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Springer Cham. - : Springer Cham. - 9783031655951 ; , s. 67-87
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the recent decade, the concept of physical literacy has gained increasing prominence worldwide. Introduced by Whitehead in the early 1990s, physical literacy was conceptualized as a developmental process encompassing competence in the physical, affective, and cognitive dimensions that should be understood in a holistic manner where the attributes are interconnected and inseparable. Physical literacy has been proposed to associate with several related outcomes, such as physical activity (PA), sport participation, and an overall active lifestyle, as well as other health behaviors and outcomes. Due to the potential of the concept, there has been an increased interest in assessing physical literacy, especially among school-aged children and adolescents. The purpose of present chapter is to explore what is currently known regarding physical literacy assessment tools, the validity of the tools, and the association between physical literacy and PA participation and health and well-being among school-aged children and adolescents.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - 0023-7205. ; 113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
