  • Baltic Sea History : New perspectives on the history of the Baltic Sea Region: A Sourcebook
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • When you talk about history in the Baltic Sea Region, it will not take long before sensitive issues come up. It may often be hard to find a common ground. In this book, researchers and educators from seven countries present 19 case studies of conflicting views and interpretations of history, together with a selection of sources. The book should be useful for teachers, guides, and others who present history to a larger audience, as well as to all who are interested in the History of the Baltic Sea Region.Chronologically, the case studies range from the perception of Vikings, and the Christianization of the Eastern Baltic, to the appearance of central parts of present-day Tallinn and Riga, marked by the presence of some heavily symbolic buildings and monuments.

  • Further Exploration of the Psychometric Properties of GamTest : A Rasch Analysis
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI AG. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 18:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • GamTest is a self-rating scale of negative consequences of gambling, included in the popular responsible gambling tool Playscan as part of an overall risk assessment and feedback feature. Two previous psychometric evaluations of this instrument yielded contradictory results: in an online high-gambling population, a five-factor model was supported and the instrument had overall good psychometric properties, but in a low-gambling population, the same factor structure was not supported. Because GamTest is used with both low- and high-gambling populations, more psychometric research is needed to fully understand how the instrument works. The current study examined, for the first time, psychometric performance among a sample of low-gambling respondents using a Rasch analysis. Results indicated that the instrument could be improved by decreasing the scale-steps and removing several problematic items demonstrating misfit. Furthermore, the findings indicated that some items functioned differently depending on gender, and that a shortened, improved nine-item version could not differentiate between different levels of risk. Our findings suggest that the instrument would arguably benefit from being adapted for use in a low-gambling population.

  • Psychometric properties of the Jonsson-Abbott Scale : Rasch and confirmatory factor analyses
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-1078. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measuring and assessing the different aspects of gambling behavior and its consequences is crucial for planning prevention, treatment, and understanding the development of at-risk and problem gambling. Studies indicate that instruments measuring problem gambling produce different results based on the characteristics of the population assessed. To accurately measure at-risk and problem gambling behavior, especially in a low-risk population, measures must cover a wider set of dimensions than the negative consequences already manifest. The Jonsson-Abbott Scale (JAS) includes items that cover overconsumption, actions that reinforce gambling behavior, and belief in gambling fallacies, based on a three-factor structure and has previously demonstrated good psychometric properties. However, there is a need to investigate how the instrument also functions in low-risk populations. This study aims to do so using both confirmatory factor and Rasch analysis; this research included 1,413 Swedish participants who endorsed at least one JAS item. The results replicated the previous three-factor solution and indicated that the instrument had good reliability. In addition, the results demonstrated that the three factors are independent, and the overall score per factor needs to be analyzed. In summary, the JAS appears suitable for use in low-risk populations to measure various aspects of gambling behavior.

  • The use and experience of responsible gambling tools : An explorative analysis of user behavior regarding a responsible gambling tool and the consequences of use
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Responsible gambling tools are an intervention that is designed to decrease gambling among individuals with an at-risk gambling behavior. Studies have indicated that responsible gambling tools can decrease gambling behavior, but little is known about how this intervention is used by gamblers. The aim of the present thesis was to explore different facets of the use, experience and functions of these tools. Study I used descriptive statistics and latent class analysis (LCA) combined with multinomial regression to explore the use of the responsible gambling tool Playscan among 9528 gamblers (regular and at-risk gamblers). The participants had volunteered to use the tool. The functions of the tool had a high rate of initial use but a low rate of repeated use. The LCA identified five user classes. Two of the classes (self-testers and multifunctional users) were defined as high users of the tool and had a higher risk of developing gambling problems according to multinomial regression. The multifunctional users were characterized by an extensive use of all the functions while the other high usage class had an extensive use of the self-test. The three other classes were as follows: those who did not use the tool, those who visited the tool but did not engage in any of the functions, and those who only used the tool’s advice on how to decrease their gambling. Participants’ reasons for use and non-use of the tool were attributed to their degree of need of the tool and its functions. The tool’s most widely used function was the self-test that investigated the level of negative consequences faced by a user due to his or her gambling. Study II was a qualitative study investigating participants’ views, experiences and their reasons for using the tool. The study was conducted by interviewing 20 volunteer users of the tool. These semi-structured interviews were analyzed by thematic analysis. The results showed that the users had a positive attitude towards the tool and understood its purpose. The self-test was the most widely used function in this sample as well. However, the participants’ positive attitude toward the tool did not effectively encourage them to use it; they displayed low use of the tool’s functions. This paradox was explained by lack of feedback and the fact that some participants did not understand that they had registered to use the tool. Providing more feedback and tailoring the feedback to individual users were seen as ways of bridging the paradox. Study II also found that participants used the gambling website (which Playscan was linked to) in an analogue way, preparing their bets before placing them online. This limited the time they spent on the site and inhibited their use of Playscan. Study III was motivated by the extensive use of the self-test among users in Study I and Study II. The aim of Study III was to investigate the psychometric properties of the self-test (known as GamTest) to better understand how it could be used with Playscan in the most efficient way. Two thousand two hundred and thirty four respondents answered the questionnaire, along with instruments measuring depression, anxiety and another instrument measuring problems due to gambling. Factor analysis, parallel analysis, Cronbach’s alpha, and correlations were used to establish the tool’s psychometric properties. The results yielded a three-factor model, excellent reliability, and high correlation with the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), endorsing the validity of the self-test. The results also indicated that the questionnaire could be effectively shortened. Overall, the studies show that the tool has an initial high use, low repeated use and that the self-test is the most used feature. In addition, the self-test had good psychometric properties.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In spite of her long stay in Italy, Saint Birgitta of Sweden always regarded Sweden as her homeland and wanted to be buried in Vadstena monastery, then under construction. Members of the Bridgettine circle in Rome carried her mortal remains from Italy to Sweden, leaving Rome in December, 1373 and arriving in Vadstena in July, 1374. According to a contemporary miracle tale, as the party crossed the Baltic doubts emerged regarding which port to anchor in as they learned of war raging in Sweden. This article contributes to an ongoing scholarly discussion concerning the possibilities of identifying this port. The final part of the article discusses which saint is meant by “Saint Brita” cited as patron saint of a chapel at Sikavarp port on Öland in a sixteenth-century source.

    • Children and Young People in Medieval Miracle Tales. In Swedish.Miracle tales are a rewarding source material for the study of the conditions of children and young people in the Middle Ages. Other sources originate mainly from the elites of medieval society, whose views on child rearing and childhood were rather extreme. Miracle tales on the other hand were told by people from all segments of society and illustrate the life of medieval children in a great variety of situations of leisure and work. However, all miracle tales are not equally well suited for the use of social history. It is especially the miracle collections of the later Middle Ages–to which the Swedish miracle collections belong–that provide such material. Examples are given in the text.

    • Rupture or Continuity? The year 1523 in the history of Sweden [in Swedish]In 1523, Gustav Eriksson of the noble family Vasa was elected king of Sweden. The year 2023 therefore marks a jubilee. However, this election has exaggeratedly been called the birthday of Sweden in numerous outlets. But in 1523, Sweden had already a long history, including personalities like King Eric the Holy, King Magnus Ladulås, and the prophetess St Birgitta. The election in 1523 was an episode in the history of Sweden, not its beginning. This book chapter discusses when Sweden may be discerned as a kingdom within defined borders, and how elements of a state fostering the rule of law are visible in thirteenth and fourteenth century legislation. The erroneous idea that Sweden was born in 1523 'has to do with a certain interpretation of the Kalmar Union. A large part of the chapter is therefore focused on the union period and some of the documents that were produced then. Three kingdoms came together to form the Kalmar Union, each with its own laws and institutions. It was not an empire, nor a foreign rule of Sweden. The time in power of King Gustav (Gustavus) Vasa was indeed a period of significant change, not least in the domains of religion a forms of government, but there was also a large part of continuity, which must not be forgotten.

  • Ingår i: Journal of the history of sexuality. - : Project Muse. - 1043-4070 .- 1535-3605. ; 21:2, s. 297-312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chance of dying in pregnancy or childbirth was very real for medieval women, and still is in many Third World countries. In Medieval Catholic Western Europe, including Scandinavia, these risks, and the absence of medically schooled persons who could give efficient help, led many women to turn to the saints for intercession. The evidence produced by miracle accounts that this practice has generated allows us to look into the bedchambers of otherwise unknown medieval women, suffering the pains of extended labor or giving birth to seemingly lifeless children. From their stories we may learn much about the situation at childbirth, and not least about the circle of women which normally surrounded the woman giving birth. The stories supplement information that may be gathered from other sources and shed light on questions that have been debated in earlier research, such as the professionalization of midwifery and the presence or non-presence of men and/or unwed women at childbirth. As a whole, miracle tales provide an interesting source material for many aspects of medieval everyday life, not least because it is—compared to other sources—more balanced in terms of gender.

    • The mention of devils and demons in Swedish miracle tales of the Late Middle Ages is not unusual, but the frequency varies greatly from collection to collection. The occurrences may be grouped according to the role the devils or the demons play in the tales. One group of accounts uses the devil as an explanation for illness. Another group is similar to the first-mentioned, but is more detailed in its description of the circumstances surrounding the possession. The third group, which is the most interesting category for our purposes, accounts in detail for the devil's behaviour or the visions of the devil the afflicted person had, while the fourth group speaks about the devil as a tempter.

    • Indulgence – a frequently misunderstood phenomenon in the medieval Church. This paper has a didactic purpose. An often heard misconception concerning the medieval Catholic Church is that forgiving of sins could be bought for money. This opinion is the result of misconceptions of the phenomenon of indulgence. In the paper, indulgence is discussed and explained in the context of the sacrament of Penance. Examples are cited from late medieval Scandinavia. The focus is on practice, while theological and judicial aspects are dealt with cursorily. Martin Luther’s critical discussion of indulgence in his 95 theses from 1517 exemplifies the critique directed towards the late medieval sale of indulgence. Finally, some modern Swedish schoolbooks in Religion and History are examined in order to see if misconceptions of medieval indulgence are still in vigour.

    • The cult of saints played a leading role in the process of Christian socialization, which had as its goal making the newly converted Swedes full-fledged members of the universal Church. The saints’ days strongly contributed to the structuring of time in the rhythm of the Christian calendar. Certain saint’s days were free from labour and might even be preceded by a fast. Fairs came to be associated with saints’ days. The Swedish saints, whose cults arose between the introduction of Christianity and the mid-fourteenth century, may be classified into a number of major categories, from which a pattern emerges. The saints who from an international perspective give the pantheon of Swedish saints a special character are not primarily the clerical or monastic saints, but rather holy laymen.

Cultural influences in prehistoric and historic times are dealt with, and some linguistic observations are made. The concept of the Great Patriotic War is discussed, departing from a visit to the homonymous museum, and conversations with students. The article also confers impressions from a visit to the historic town of Grodno near the borders of Lithuania and Poland, where, among other sites, a visit was paid to the old Bridgettine convent. In the final part of the article, the border separating Belarus from its Schengen neighbours is discussed.

    • A short biography of Katarina Ulfsdotter (Catherine of Vadstena), daughter of St Birgitta of Sweden, co-founder of Vadstena Abbey, and a saint of the Catholic Church. Katarina was born in c. 1331. She passed half of her life in Rome, as assistant to her mother as long as she lived, and thereafter to fulfil her work. She also actively furthered the interests of the Swedish Church province in Rome.Katarina succeeded in gaining the trust of the people with which she interacted, including the Pope and the curia, and heads of state like Queen Joanna of Naples. She was also a keen organizer of the monastery in Vadstena that had been founded according to the instructions of St Birgitta. She passed away on March 24, 1381, already with a reputation for sanctity. A biography was written, miracles were reported, and in the 1470s, a process of canonization was undertaken.

    • Situated at the margin of Europe, Sweden was not much affected by the great migrations or the Christian missions during the 5th and 8th centuries. Only from the 9th century onwards, a sustained endeavour to include Sweden in Christian Europe is discernible, ending in the creation of the ecclesiastic province of Uppsala in 1164, comprising the Swedish kingdom. The Christianization of Sweden was brought about without exterior military pressure or visible interior unrest. An interdisciplinary research group has been formed to study the Christianization of Sweden, and the paper is largely based on publications of this group. Two fields of discussion, where different approaches meet, have been chosen for the discussion. One is the debate considering the relative importance of phenomena of continuity and rupture respectively in the process of Christianization, e.g. concerning cult places, religious customs and burial. The other is the discussion of how the missions were organized and carried out, e.g. the relative importance of English, German and Roman influence on the establishing of Christian institutions in Sweden.

    • Medieval miracle stories from Småland and ÖlandMiracle collections and canonization processes from the Swedish Middle Ages contain some 600 individual miracle stories. A number of these have their origin in the diocese of Växjö within its present borders. They date from the thirteenth through the fifteenth centuries. Persons involved in those stories and the circumstances that made them turn to the saints are discussed in this book chapter. Miracle stories offer unique glimpses of the everyday life of women, men, and children of the Middle Ages and allow us to see that they are in reality quite close to ourselves.

    • Medieval Miracle Tales Related to GotlandMiracle collections and canonization processes from the Swedish Middle Ages contain some 600 accounts of people having experienced help after imploring the saints for intercession. This number includes miracles related to a miracle-working image of the Descent from the Cross in Stockholm. Only a small number of Swedish miracle tales have some connection with Gotland. This might be explained by the central position of the island in the network of trade and communication routes of the time. Gotlanders had a large choice of shrines around the Baltic Sea rim and on the continent, and there were also pilgrimage sites on Gotland itself. In a world where doctors were few and the results of their treatment dubious, where crossing the Baltic was a risky enterprise, and the legal rights of the individual precarious, the saints offered a sense of security and a belief that help was never far away. The Middle Ages may feel distant, but in the history of mankind, only a brief moment of time separates us from the people who lived in that period.

    • In the leading Swedish television news show Rapport on June 6, 2005, Swedish sixteenth century king Gustav I Vasa was referred to as the first king of a unified Swedish kingdom. This statement is astonishing to the historian. It was made in an effort to explain why the day of his election has been made Sweden’s national day. The article gives an account of an exchange of e-mail between the author and the editorial staff of the news show. The author points out that the statement made in the show not only is incorrect, but furthermore has the effect of cutting out several centuries of Swedish history, thus making it less comprehensible. The editors of the news show persist in their opinion that Gustav Vasa was in fact the first king of Sweden, referring to informants at the National Museum of Cultural History (Nordiska museet). The fact that such a point of view can be upheld by a leading Swedish news show does seem to reflect the weakened position of medieval history within the field of historical study in Sweden, which is pointed out by Auður Magnúsdóttir in Historisk tidskrift 2005, no. 2. When academic historians withdraw from the medieval era, regarding it as less relevant for later Swedish history, the space vacated by them is occupied by ignorance and myth. This development is further accentuated by the reduced space for medieval history in the Swedish gymnasieskola (high school).

    • This work studies the introduction of three new cults of saints in the Linköping Bishopric during the Late Middle Ages. Two of them were based at Vadstena Convent: the Holy Bridgel (Birgitta, d. 1373) cult which had its beginning in 1374 and the cult of Katarina Ulfsdotter (d. 1381), which started during the 1410's. The third, the cult of Bishop Nils Hermansson (d. 1391), which originated at the latest in I40l. was associaled w ith the cathedral in Linköping. The introduction of a saint's cult may be relaled to the need of many people in medieval society for healing and protection. The tales about the saint's posthumous miracles played a key role in the introductory phase of the cults. In the dissertation such tales are used as the foundation for the analysis of the varied geographic and social patterns of distnbution of the three cults. The cult of the Holy Bridget was as much an intemational as a Swedish cult. The other cults studied were two of manv attempts to ride on the wave created by the successes of the Bridget cult. They may furthermore be regarded a response to various types of crises which the sponsoring institutions experienced.

    • An 11th C. bishop and missionary to northern Sweden—including the territories of the Sami—named Stenphi and renamed Simeon, was reused under a third name, Staffan (Lat.: Stephanus), in a 15th C. chronicle. Here, he was casted as a martyr and a grave was identified. Paradoxically, Simeon's posthumous career as a martyr was given additional strength by the Reformation, when exiled Catholics fought to reclaim the history of Christianity in Sweden. The alleged martyr lived on in literature, tradition and folklore and still does so.

    • The writing down of a miracle tale was a meeting point between the oral culture of the lay people and the literate, Latin culture of the clergy. The question is to know to what degree the extant manuscripts give a trustworthy documentation of this meeting. Examples from the miracula of four Swedish saints, Eric of Uppsala, Birgitta of Sweden, Bishop Nils Hermansson of Linköping and Katherine of Vadstena, are scrutinized in this paper, in order to come as close as possible to the original storytelling moment.Miracle tales are marvellous sources – not only because they deal with miracles. In them, we come closer than in almost any other category of sources to what was medieval daily life. We meet with ordinary people who are otherwise not mentioned in any surviving sources, and share in their worries, their sufferings, their joys, and not least in their faith. But how trustworthy are the accounts? May we hear in them the authentic vox populi, the voice of the people? The answer given in this paper is that this is the case, more or less, since the registrars, who were proficiently bilingual, knew that the tales could be subject to renewed inquiries, but that they have filtered the stories to some extent, and especially the wording of the vows and other theologically sensitive issues.

    • The founding of a parish church is one of the most revolutionary changes in the history of the local community. The church was regarded as a meeting place between God and men. The priest came daily before the face of God as a representative of the local Christian community. The relationship between priest and parishioners could be viewed as a contractual one, where the priest, who carried out acts of daily worship, had his living provided for by the parishioners. His duties were regulated in secular as well as in canon law. The Christian calendar set the rhythm of the yearly cycle. The article also deals with confession and other aspects of parish life in the Middle Ages.

    • When a person with a reputation for holiness died, it was common for people to seek that person's grave to give thanks for, or hoping to benefit from miraculous cures. Especially when the cult was new, pilgrims' tales were taken down in order to promote the cult or substantiate the request for canonization. The miracles of St. Birgitta of Sweden were collected at various stages between 1374 and 1390 and the writing down of the miracles of her daughter St. Katherine of Vadstena begun shortly after 1410, but was for the major part undertaken between 1469 and 1477.The pilgrimage was often the result of a conditional vow to the saint, sometimes inspired by other persons' stories about the saint's ability to help. Another way of determining which saint to turn to was the casting of lots. In some cases, the miraculous cure might seen to have been brought about by a sort of cooperation between the saint and the persons present, while in other cases the efficacious help of the saint is contrasted to the inefficiency of human efforts. The miracles sometimes exceed the expectations of those who prayed for it, but in other cases it is clear that the healing is only partial. In the few cases where entirely unsuccessful supplications to a saint are described, their only meaning were to direct the supplicant to another saint—the one whose miracles are chiefly registered in the collection.Visions both of the saint and of demons are relatively common in the collections of Birgitta and Katherine. A particularly interesting tale relates the possession of demons experienced by a young woman of Östra Husby in Östergötland, and the efforts made by the clerics of the young monastery in Vadstena to exorcise them. Their success is doubtful. One is rather given the expression that the young woman, Christina, held on to her demons.

    • In processes of canonization, accounts of miracles experienced by men and women from all strata of society were recorded. Highly educated clerics listened carefully to stories told by ordinary people, on whom no writer would otherwise have cared to waste his ink. As André Vauchez has pointed out, the canonization processes constitute the place of a confrontation between the culture of the dominant strata, to which belonged those who ordained and carried out the investigations, and the culture of the lower classes, among which a good number of witnesses were recruited. In most cases, the records of miracles were brief, but there were pilgrims with talents for storytelling that went beyond the ordinary, who enticed the registrars to exceed the normal formulas. Twenty-nine such stories from the miracles of Birgitta of Sweden, Nils of Linköping and Katherine of Vadstena have been examined for this paper. Behind each of these accounts, there is an original tale that was delivered orally for the registrars, who essentially reproduced it in their texts. Used with methodological caution, this source material presents us with fragments of authentic popular storytelling from the 14th and 15th centuries.
