    • The overall aim of the thesis is to discuss and understand different aspects of the family life that lone mothers with sons develop in relation to absent fathers and the support from social services. The study is based upon nine case studies, each of them including qualitative interviews with the mother, the son (age 1318), the male contact person from social services and the responsible social worker. Furthermore three biological fathers and a few managers and youth workers with connection to the cases have been interviewed. Discourses on motherhood and fatherhood as well as modern family life and different kinds of relationships between lone mothers and sons are discussed both theoretically and empirically. The study shows that the lone motherhood for this group of vulnerable mothers is very complex. They have in general a mother-centring view, taking on the main responsibility for the family life and also for the present problems in the family. It is obvious that the mothers are definable not only as lone mothers but primarily as lone-responsible for the family life. Even when new partners are entering their lives, the picture of lone-responsible motherhood remains. The psychological family is intact in spite of the fact that new adults are coming into the family sphere. The different kinds of relationships that are formed between mothers and sons are initially categorized as close, indifferent and balanced on the basis of the informants own views. The actual contact between the father and the son and mother has a relatively subordinate importance for how the relationship between mother and son is formed. Instead the joint construction of the father figure, a reference father, and the way the mother and son relate to this construction in different situations are more significant. A negative construction of the father seems to strengthen the relationship between mother and son and the development of a close relationship. Though the fathers are in principle absent, they seem to be extremely present as psychological father figures in these families. The access to siblings, the provision of support from the social network, and the sons social contacts are important factors that affect the family life and the relationship between mothers and sons. At the same time it is evident that the mothers feelings of insufficiency can be related to structural reasons such as exclusion from the labour market, bad health and weak economy. From this perspective the previous categories of relationships can be redefined from psychoanalytical terms with social family descriptions referring to isolated, transformed, and socially established families. The social hardship that some of these families experience will to a great extent affect what kind of relationships mothers and sons develop. Despite an overall conception of lone mothers as an accepted and well-functioning family form, traditional ideals are manifest in the interaction between the families and social services. The absence of the father is assumed to imply a need for limits and authority, which are to be transformed into male functions. The contact persons look upon themselves as male role models and as possible identification objects for the sons. The social workers are in general less attached to the idea of male role models and stress instead the importance of access to other adults. At the same time it is obvious that there exists a hidden gender discourse in their argumentation in favour of using male contact persons. With the help of the contact persons they aim to compensate for a negative father figure by presenting alternative male ideals.

    • The overall goal of this study is to find out what impact work, education and the individual life story have on individual’s transition to parenthood in contemporary multiethnic Sweden. Does family formation differ between individuals with Swedish and individuals with other ethnic background? The study is based on interviews with a life story approach with three different groups of couples that recently have become parents (first child 6-15 months). The groups are young adults with parents born in Sweden, young adults with parents born in Turkey and a mixed group of couples where one part has parents born in Sweden and one in Turkey. The main focus is to explore why these couples have taken the decision to become parents at this stage of their lives. Which kinds of considerations, experiences and knowledge are important for their choices? What does it mean to become a parent, how does individual and collective structures interact in the decision to become a parent, how does men and women balance independence and autonomy with class and ethnicity taken into account, how does men and women balance their individual versus the collective family project? The study deals with commonalities and differences between the three groups in relation to the Swedish welfare system and to traditions in each group based on culture, nationality and family traditions. The analysis shows so far that starting a family is much more of an individual life project for the Swedish group of parents. The Swedish social policy and insurance system seem to have an impact on their way of acting. Economy, work and housing conditions are very important for their decision. For the Turkish group starting a family is much more of a collective project related to culture and family traditions. They do not have the same reliability on the welfare state but more on their own families. The mixed group have more of negotiations and conflicts, trying to balance their different views of family life. Key words: family life, welfare, autonomy/dependency, ethnicity

  • Laypersons or professionals? Ambivalence about voluntary contact persons in social services in Sweden

    • ABSTRACT Sweden has a long tradition of using ordinary people, often named laypersons, as supportive persons within the area of social services. One of the most popular interventions is to support children and teenagers by using a volunteer contact family (CF) or contact person (CP). The intervention was introduced in the Social Services Act, implemented in 1982, and at present about 19,000 young persons in Sweden have this intervention. In practice, it is regarded as two interventions, CF and CP. The article will only deal with CPs for teenagers. Despite this is a very popular intervention, there is a lack of knowledge about how it works and has developed during these three decades. Research dealing with the CP intervention takes partly contradictory views. Qualitative studies often stress positive experiences of all categories involved, while a comprehensive quantitative study recently presented results, indicating that the intervention seemed to increase the risk of being placed in out-of-home care in the future. The aim of the article is to explore and illustrate how the CP intervention works today in relation to the original intensions in law and which types of persons that are appointed for the CP assignments. The impact of the professional development in social work will be discussed in the analysis. The results will tell us something about the progress and development of the intervention but also the organisational context in which social services exist in Sweden today.

  • The presence of the absent father; how lone mothers with sons construct and animate the absent father through narratives
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work. - 1369-1457. ; 11:4, s. 369-381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article builds upon results from an empirical study of nine cases where single mothers and their teenage sons have reflected on the relationship to the absent father and on his significance for the family. The results have led us to reflect further on how the construction of a father figure is shaped. The cases are selected from ongoing interventions from the Social Services. The father’s absence varies from always to the child’s first year till seven years or more. Through analysis of the different cases of dyad-mother-son, their narratives and their joint construction of a father figure, the dyad transforms into a triad with the presence of the absent father. Also discussed is the question of which underlying conditions contribute to the need for a joint construction of the father. Further, doubt is cast on the one-sided gender perspective that presupposes young men’s need for an adult man as a model of masculinity. The analysis is made towards the Swedish legislation emphasising the importance of ascribed biological parenthood, meaning that fathers right to joint custody and to visit the child have been strengthened, along with the creation of a state-controlled fatherhood. Keywords: lone mothers; absent fathers; male role models; joint father-figure; narratives

  • Outsourcing the core of social work? Consequences of the organisational development within social services in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: ENSACT, Istanbul, 17-19/4 2013.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sweden has a long tradition of using laymen as supportive persons within the social services. One of the most popular interventions is to support children and teenagers by using a contact family or a contact person. At present about 20 000 young persons in Sweden have this intervention and the situation has been stable during the last decade. The paper is based on an on-going study titled Society as a teenage parent . The focus is on teenagers between 13 and 20 with experience of having a contact person for a year or more. The aim is to gain knowledge on what content is included when the social services decides to indicate a contact person for a teenager. Further to investigate how this can be understood as a way of executing parental responsibilities where the family of origin seems to fail. The project design includes focus groups with social workers, contact persons and school representatives; analysis of social work case files as well as interviews with the young person, the contact person, the parent(s) and the social worker. The study has been conducted in three different municipalities in the western region of Sweden during the last two years and is still in progress. A result of the study so far is that social workers seem to be more of an outsourcing consultant, dealing with different bureaucratic matters in order to fulfil their responsibility in relation to society. The contact person intervention has both the character of a voluntary intervention, accomplished by laymen, and a professional or semi-professional intervention where different professionals get involved. In both cases the social workers are the organisers while the contact persons work in direct contact with the teenagers, the kind of work we normally connect to the “core of social work”. The paper and presentation will deal with the questions: In which way will this change have an impact on the future development of social work profession? What are the advantages and disadvantages? What are the alternatives?

  • Swedish contact persons for youths at risk – reasons and patterns in social documentation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Conference on Social Work Research.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the most popular interventions within the social services in Sweden is to support children and teenagers by using a contact person. Using voluntary persons in social work has a long tradition in the country and mostly these voluntary persons are ‘ordinary’ people interested in giving other people support if needed. A contact person can be seen as a way of building bridges between the civil society and the professional social work. This intervention is very popular and about 20 0000 children/young people between 1-18 years are yearly registered for this support (contact person or contact family) and the figures have been quite stable during the last decade. Despite the popularity there is a lack of knowledge and evaluation concerning how it works and which functions and con- tent the social workers try to achieve by using a contact person or a contact family. The presentation is based on an on-going research project with focus on teenagers between 13 and 20 with experience of having a contact person for a year or more. The project with the title Society as teenage parent – about contact persons within the social services is financed by FAS (the Swedish Council for Working life and Social research). The aim of the study is to obtain new knowledge about the way the social services use and create the content and the character of this intervention. The design is based on a Helena Johansson and Mona Franséhn. Swedish contact persons for youths at risk – reasons and patterns in social documentation (Fri- day 13.30 h) 58 ECSWR 2012, Basel model including focus groups (with social workers, contact persons, school representatives), docu- ment studies and case studies. The study is carried out in three different municipalities in the west- ern region of Sweden. In the presentation the document study will be focused. Social documentation concerning 36 young persons (age 8 to 19) have been collected and analysed. We will present and discuss key characteristics of the young persons and their families, what patterns can be identified when it comes to of motives for the intervention and of problem descriptions as well as underlying assumptions of gender class and family.
