- Syncretism seems to disturb, and make uncertain what is taken for granted. Whether this is out of ‘logic’ or out of ‘jealousy’ is important in my reading. In this paper I suggest that logic is unhelpful in analyses of syncretism. Many religiously grounded refutations and condemnations of syncretism are based on jealousy, I suggest. I also suggest that jealousy as ground for judging syncretism, syncretic comportment, or syncretic ideas entails a relational aspect, giving place to sentiment, and to emotion. hence, jealousy requires judgements when a purported syncretic phenomenon is dealt with. Making a judgement implies therefore possible negotiations, changed views, and compromise. A judgement invites ethical perspectives.

- Interreligious dialogue is designed to take into account a plurality of faiths. But at the same time it often excludes or marginalizes women, both physically and conceptually, which is disqualifying for a dialogue that have pretensions to be non-oppressive. The article illustrates some areas where a gender perspective may be relevant, as in the selection of the participants of the dialogue and in the communicative style of the dialogue, and ends with a reflection on the prospects for incorporating a gender perspective in interreligious dialogue.

- Terrorism i svensk politik (SweTerror) är ett storskaligt tvärvetenskapligt forskningsprojekt med forskare från såväl human- och samhällsvetenskaperna som datavetenskaperna. Samtidigt använder och utvecklar SweTerror nationell forskningsinfrastruktur för riksdagsdata. Detta paper beskriver användningen av samförfattande som en datadriven tvärvetenskaplig praktik för att integrera olika vetenskapliga perspektiv och skapa samsyn i projektforskningen. Vi tar fasta på betydelsen av valet att koncentrera samarbetsformen kring konferenspapers inom specifikt digital humaniora och diskuterar erfarenheten av att samskrivande försvagar vetenskapligt revirtänkande, liksom ett iterativt förhållningssätt till forskningsdata kopplade till forskningsinfrastrukturer under uppbyggnad. Avslutningsvis betonar vi datadrivet samförfattande som en pragmatisk praktik för att stärka kollaborativt samarbete och kunskapsbryggor inom en tvärvetenskaplig forskargrupp.

The diachrony of the new political terrorism: Neologisms as discursive framing in Swedish parliamentary data 1971–2018

- This paper begins to unpack the framing of terrorism in the Swedish Parliament through distant reading and by chronologically extracting neologisms in a comprehensive corpus of transcripts of parliamentary debates. Combining language technology and historical contextualization, we find support for the argument that the term ‘terrorism’ gained much of its modern meaning around 1970. Specifically, our study points to a legislative framing of the issue of terrorism in Swedish parliamentary debate from the early 1970s and onwards. We also find a proliferation in the production of neologisms and compounds after 9/11 2001, reflecting, among other things, the rise of a more distinct counter-terrorism discourse and more ‘specialized’ roles and functions related to terrorism and counter-terrorism activities. The paper concludes by emphasizing the analytical benefits of tracing parliamentary discourse through neologisms as an explorative approach to identify significant patterns for further investigation.

- Svenskar är oroliga för terrorism, även om oron varierar över tid. I det här kapitlet studerar vi denna oro i allmänhet och särskilt i vilken utsträckning som den hänger samman med uppfattningar om ”främmande” kulturer som hot. Vi gör det mot bakgrund av att terrorism som begrepp kan ha olika betydelser beroende på politiska perspektiv och historiska sammanhang. Likaså väger studien in det svenska folkets uppfattningar om invandring som ett hot mot svensk kultur och värderingar. Resultaten visar att medborgarnas oro under 2000-talet var som högst efter attackerna i USA den 11 september 2001 och lastbilsattacken på Drottninggatan 2017. Samtidigt är oro för terrorism något som delar medborgarna beroende på politisk orientering. Medan personer som står till vänster är mer oroliga för politisk extremism än terrorism, finns det bland personer till höger en stor grupp ”säkerhetsivrare”, som kombinerar oro för terrorism med en negativ inställning till invandring.

- This paper presents the design of one of Sweden’s largest digital humanities projects, SweTerror, that through an interdisciplinary multi-modal methodological approach develops an extensive speech-to-text digital HSS resource. SweTerror makes a major contribution to the study of terrorism in Sweden through a comprehensive mixed methods study of the political discourse on terrorism since the late 1960s. Drawing on artificial intelligence in the form of state-of-the-art language and speech technology, it systematically analyses all forms of relevant parliamentary utterances. It explores and curates an exhaustive but understudied multi-modal collection of primary sources of central relevance to Swedish democracy: the audio recordings of the Swedish Parliament’s debates. The project studies the framing of terrorism both as policy discourse and enacted politics, examining semantic and emotive components of the parliamentary discourse on terrorism as well as major actors and social networks involved. It covers political responses to a range of terrorism-related issues as well as factors influencing policy-makers’ engagement, including political affiliations and gender. SweTerror also develops an online research portal, featuring the complete research material and searchable audio made readily accessible for further exploration. Long-term, the project establishes a model for combining extraction technologies (speech recognition and analysis) for audiovisual parliamentary data with text mining and HSS interpretive methods and the portal is designed to serve as a prototype for other similar projects.

- Catharina Stenqvist (1950–2014) verkade som religionsfilosof med intresse för frågor om religiös erfarenhet och människans existentiella villkor. Hennes forskning kretsade kring mystik och mening och hon argumenterade för vikten att tala om livshållning snarare än livsåskådning. I föreliggande essä läser Patrik Fridlund en kort och lite annorlunda text av henne. I sitt efterord till denna essä skriver han:”Min uppfattning är att Catharina Stenqvists text ’Två passioner’ är en viktig text av alldeles just den anledningen att hon i den texten knyter samman tro och tänkande med liv och handling, på sitt sätt. Hon gör det skickligt, starkt och tankeväckande. Hennes text är rik och berikar men öppnar också för läsaren att ta ytterligare ett steg. Min läsning av ’Två passioner’ hoppas jag kan ses som ett sätt att ta just ett sådant ytterligare steg.”I formen av ett fiktivt brev lyfts en rad viktiga och spännande temata i Catharina Stenqvists text fram. - Secrecy is a theme in Genesis 22, in Derrida's reading of the story, in which God commands Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. It is about keeping a secret, not secret as in hiding, but rather the secret of an exclusive relationship. This is embarrassing as it is excluding. Accepting this unique relationship by keeping the secret, Abraham demonstrates his willingness to enter into a relationship based on unconditional love. An essential part of this unconditionality and uniqueness is Abraham not referring to anybody or anything outside. He thus takes the responsibility entirely. This may be seen as being centred upon the individual. It may also be seen as a question of taking responsibility, deciding, and taking a stand. Interestingly enough, Abraham must be capable of failing, or in other words he must be capable of deciding not to obey the command. The call is for a unique relationship, but there must be a possibility of not responding to the call. Or, must there?

- There is often a perceived tension between dialogue on the one hand and conversion on the other hand. This article suggests that this tension may be related to religious conviction and religious belonging being seen as monolithic. A basic idea of this article is that there are suggestive empirical findings and relevant conceptual arguments about double religious belonging in a large sense, which lead to a profound questioning, which undermines established views of religion as comprehensive systems. This has implications for conceptions of dialogue and conversion. It is suggested that a consequence of taking into consideration double religious belonging in a broad sense is that established ideas of religions as comprehensive interpretative schemes are undermined. Instead, one would have to acknowledge the fragmented, partial, and contextual character of religion. Accordingly, interreligious dialogue and conversion must also be understood as diversified, variegated and fragmented phenomena. Dialogue is addressed to specific issues, in precise contexts, regarding particular concerns, and the same could generally be said of the aim to convert others.

- Christian theology is in favour of interreligious dialogue without proselytism. At the same time, all religious institutions do seem to have a drive to convert those who are not already inside. Hence there is a tension. Redefine the terms seems insufficient to me. The question to deal with is rather when, how, and why is conversion allowed or even praised even though the character of dialogue without efforts to convert is respected. It has to do with our understanding of religion. A widespread and commonly held understanding of religion as stable and isolated entities with believers who are profoundly marked by their belonging, is a view that can and must be questioned if one looks into how religion functions and what people actually do when they live their religion. Once this is seen, a new perspective on dialogue and on conversion is possible, and thus also a new perspective on the relationship between the two.

- I argue that Paul Ricœur displaces and decentres established theodicies; the issue of evil is perceived as a practical rather than a speculative matter. It is the view of evil as a productive aporia, which suggests that evil provokes action and obliges human beings to take a stand ethically and politically. Hence, the topic of evil is not necessarily about putting together a jigsaw puzzle. The central problem of evil has less to do with logic than with resignation, inertia, despair and meaninglessness.

- It can be said that literary texts do not have any obligation to reality, and that literature destabilises our relation to normal use of words and to established perspectives. Literature is in relation with something that cannot be explained or conceptualised. In this respect literature is close to religion. Literature invites us to believe in something that is unreal and beyond ordinary life. In literature we are confronted with something different and hence ordinary meaning of words, normal understandings and every clear defintion of concepts are shaken and brought to the field of uncertainties. In this particular respect, literture is very close to religion. At least that is so in Elisabeth Løvlie’s reading of Jacques Derrida and literature. This could be seen as in radical contrast to philosophy aiming at clarity and a rigorous use of concepts. I argue that many of the characteristics of literature that Løvlie underlines, also apply to philosophical writing. Concurrently, I argue that also literature indeed is connected to reality and indeed wants to say something about our world. I contend that philosophy can benefit from a deeper understanding of the parallels and similarities between philosophical writing and literature.

- There seems to be a double track in the relationship to the other. On the one hand, there is dialogue—an attitude of seeing the other as she is. On the other hand, we all seem to have some kind of worldview implying that My Way is the Best Way, at least in a certain respect—there seem to be certain points where I would like other people to see things in the same way as I do. I argue that these two seemingly opposite attitudes need not necessarily be connected to opposite values. No, both attitudes may be traced to similar ethical grounds. There is an ethic of dialogue, and there is an ethic of conversion, as it were. W. K. Clifford’s classical text ‘The Ethics of Belief’ is taken as a point of entry together with William James’ reply ‘The Will to Believe.’ However, instead of picking up the traditional epistemological debate regarding Clifford and James, this article uses these texts in an argument that the relation between dialogue and conversion is an intricate one from an ethical point of view. Intricate indeed, as an ethical perspective is also related to theological standpoints and to views of religion in an inter-dependent fashion. Here Dorothée Sölle is given as an illustrative example.
