  • Social Work Practice on a Community Level - Preparing Social Work Students to Become Active Agents in the Building of Sustainable Societies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Oral presentation at the Joint World Conference on Social Work Education and Social Development 2016, June 27-30 2016, Coex, Seoul, Korea.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The entrenchment of the welfare state and increasing inequalities, are challenges social workers in Sweden (and elsewhere) have to respond to. Within the BA social work programme at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, one course specifically aims to equip students with knowledge and skills to meet the demands of local and global communities and to become active agents in the shaping of a sustainable society. The course is offered third year students; each semester approximately 120 students take the 3-week full time course. The course builds on three parts: 1) Acquisition and practical application of relevant theoretical positions through a series of lectures with experts in the field of social work, human rights, media & communication, community work and urban development. 2) Building an insight into the processes of social work at a community level and promoting participation in wider public debates through study visits (such as community based youth work field visits, participation in directly broadcasted TV-debates, work-shops in urban planning). 3) Developing skills (such as critical thinking, community advocacy & ecological awareness) to become active agents in the shaping of a sustainable society through student led workshops and seminars. The content of the course responds to a world in constant flux by integrating up to date issues and challenges relevant for social work. While an underlying structure frames the course, these current issues and challenges determine the content of the lectures and focus in workshops and seminars. Collective learning processes are central elements to the course. The course is an unique example of how social work education can meet the challenges of integrating theory and practice, correspond to needs of communities and equip social workers with theoretical and practical skills to become active agents in the work towards a more sustainable and equal society.

  • Making School Children's Participation in Planning Processes a Routine Practice
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Societies. - : MDPI AG. - 2075-4698. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Children's participation in planning has been investigated to some extent. There are, however, unexplored topics, particularly concerning what is needed for children's participation to become a regular process. Based on case studies in Sweden, this article draws some conclusions. It is quite possible to organize ordinary processes where children participate in community building, in collaboration with planners, as part of their schoolwork. The key question is how this can be done. Clearly, it needs to occur in close collaboration with teachers and pupils, however it also needs to be implemented in a system-challenging manner. Thus, rather than looking for tools with potential to work in the existing school and planners' world, it is important to design research that aims to create learning processes that have the potential to change praxis. Hence, it is not the case that tools are not needed, rather that children need to help to develop them.

  • Urban Empowerment: Cultures of Participation and Learning
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This pilot project addressed one of the most critical urban challenges today namely, how can social and economic exclusion as well as socio-spatial segregation be resolved in exposed urban areas. Instead of seeing stigmatized areas as intrinsically problematic, this project explored alternative routes to positive urban change by investigating the potential of increased citizen participation and empowerment in local urban development processes. The overall aim was to develop civic and institutional capacity-building processes directly linked to changes in the study area. The project has been actively involved in or initiated ten capacity-building processes linked to different activities. The primary and concrete result of the project is the support of, and engagement in the capacity-building processes in and of themselves. However, the working of these capacity-building processes has also been analysed, leading to critical reflection and theory development on how such processes best can be implemented and supported. On a broader scale, the society needs to undergo a change we labeled as institutional transformation (in Swedish: omgestaltning), which may be considered as the social counterpart to transition (omställning).

  • Urban Empowerment through Community Outreach in Teaching and Design
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Procedia: Social and Behavioral Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1877-0428.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the newly started Centre for Urban Studies in a stigmatized suburb of Gothenburg, the academic fields of teaching, social work and architecture are collaborating with the local community. This cooperation is part of the Centre’s mission, which is to work with widening participation in higher education, developing professions, and focusing on the role of citizens in urban design. The collaboration is also part of the research project Urban Empowerment funded by Mistra Urban Futures. The present paper will discuss the potential of working with urban empowerment by using students as engines – linking education, research and community outreach – and reflect on the accompanying problems and possibilities.
