  • The Challenge of Transdisciplinary Research : A Case Study of Learning by Evaluation for Sustainable Transport Infrastructures
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 12:17, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While transdisciplinary (TD) research is desired in order to solve real world sustainability issues, this may be challenging for both academic and non-academic participants. Supporting learning through evaluation, we analyzed a project aiming at sustainable transport infrastructures. After developing a TD research framework as a benchmark, two external independent evaluators interviewed all project researchers, representatives for end-users, and donors. The evaluators compared results with the framework, and evaluators and participants critically reflected on the results together. There were three inconsistencies relative to the framework: (1) limited understanding of TD research among project management, end-users, and most of the researchers; (2) no structured learning process among end-users; instead, they expressed very diverse opinions about what they expected from the project; (3) project leaders had limited understanding of the special challenges of TD research, did not fully understand the status of the project's social system, and thus did not act as facilitators of the required collaborative learning process. Non-academic participants saw themselves as customers and not as partners in the knowledge production process. We conclude that TD problem-solving research requires much time and needs facilitation and training. A preparatory phase with a lower level of funding would be helpful in preparing for TD processes.

  • Can vertebrate predators regulate their prey?
  • 1984
  • Ingår i: The American Naturalist. ; 123:1, s. 125-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whether vertebrate predators can regulate their prey or not has long been a controversial question. At the one extreme it has been claimed that predators have no impact on prey numbers but consume only a doomed surplus (Errington 1946), and at the other that predators strongly interact with their prey causing either stable equilibria or cycles (Tanner 1975; Keith et al. 1977). However,.there are no field studies showing a regulatory effect of predation among vertebrates. Here we report on such a study.

  • Predation on brown hare and ring-necked pheasant populations on southern Sweden
  • 1984
  • Ingår i: Holarctic Ecology. ; 7:3, s. 300-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • in an open field area in southern Sweden. Biomass and numbers of hares and pheasants eaten by the predators were calculated from data on food habits, food requirements, and numbers of the mammalian and avian predators present (11 species). At the same time estimates of numbers and production of hares and pheasants were obtained. At least 40% of the estimated annual production of hares and almost 60% of subadult-adultp heasants in autumn were consumed by the predators. Estimated numbers of hares and pheasants taken by the predators greatly exceeded shootinga nd road mortality.F oxes and cats were the predominantp reda-tors on hares( about9 0%o f total harec onsumption). Foxesa ccountedf or aboutt wo-thirds of predation on pheasants; cats and goshawks were of secondary importance. Pheasant nests were preyed upon by hooded crows and also by badgers. Hares and pheasantsc ontributedo nly about 3 and 1%, respectively,o f the food of the predators.

  • Male characteristics, viability, and harem size in a wild population of pheasants.
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Animal Behaviour. - 0003-3472 .- 1095-8282. ; 40:1, s. 89-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A population of pheasants was studied for 4 years in southern Sweden to determine how sexual selection operates among males. Morphological characters, viability, dominance, territory quality, date of territorial establishment, harem size and reproductive success of males were measured; 81 males and 101 females were radio-tracked. The spur length of males was the most important predictor of harem size. Phenotypic condition and viability were significantly related to spur length, the best single predictor of the reproductive success of males. These are the first data to show that a sexually selected male character correlates significantly with male viability. The results support models suggesting that viability-based processes can contribute to the evolution of mate choice and secondary sexual characters.

  • Perceived landscape values and public participation in a road-planning process - a case study in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Planning and Management. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0964-0568 .- 1360-0559. ; 58:4, s. 631-653
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Landscape Convention indicates that assessment of different dimensions that exist in landscapes should be taken into account in planning. In this study, we first investigated ecological, cultural and social values as perceived by the local people in a highway-planning process in Sweden. Next, we explored which factors influenced the local people's participation in the road-planning process. We used questionnaires, planning documents and the Theory of Planned Behavior to investigate the relations between different factors and local people's participation in the planning process. The results showed that people presumed the ecological values in the landscape to be adversely affected by the new road, while the social values would remain the same. Landowners had heard of the participatory-process, but few participated. Those who lived within 300m of the road were more active in the planning process than people living further away. The findings suggest that people living within a few hundred metres of the road should be treated as key stakeholders in the planning process. The involvement of other stakeholders, and when in the public participation process stakeholders should be involved, is also discussed.

  • Characterization of municipal solid waste temporary storage sites : Risks posed to surrounding areas as a consequence of fire incidents
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Waste Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-053X .- 1879-2456. ; 33:11, s. 2296-2306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study temporary storage sites of municipal solid waste were characterized based on their potential social, health and environmental impacts as a consequence of spontaneous fires, by employing Boolean as well as weighted-linear-combination approaches in connection with various fuzzy set functions of population density around the storage sites. Sweden was used as the case study and data from 105 storage sites were analysed; of these, 38 were identified to be posing high risk for downwind residing population. Furthermore, during the past 10 years, the fire frequency and the average population residing within a radius of 1, 2, and 3 km were found to be comparatively higher for storage sites owned by private ompanies than for those owned by municipalities. The study provided first-cut information of poorly sited temporary storage sites and can help in formalizing the comprehensive risk analysis in the future.

  • Integrating Ecological, Social and Cultural Dimensions in the Implementation of the Landscape Convention
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Landscape research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0142-6397 .- 1469-9710. ; 38:3, s. 384-393
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Implementation of the European Landscape Convention requires new tools that link ecological, social and cultural dimensions in practical planning. Here, we propose connectivity as a conceptual tool to include different dimensions into landscape and spatial planning. We present a short review of the connectivity concept in relation to ecological, social and cultural dimensions and illustrate it by examples from a real landscape planning case.
