  • Cyclotide proteins and precursors from the genus Gloeospermum : filling a blank spot in the cyclotide map of Violaceae
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Phytochemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0031-9422 .- 1873-3700. ; 71:1, s. 13-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cyclotides are disulfide-rich plant proteins that are exceptional in their cyclic structure; their N and C termini are joined by a peptide bond, forming a continuous circular backbone, which is reinforced by three interlocked disulfide bonds. Cyclotides have been found mainly in the coffee (Rubiaceae) and violet (Violaceae) plant families. Within the Violaceae, cyclotides seem to be widely distributed, but the cyclotide complements of the vast majority of Violaceae species have not yet been explored. This study provides insight into cyclotide occurrence, diversity and biosynthesis in the Violaceae, by identifying mature cyclotide proteins, their precursors and enzymes putatively involved in their biosynthesis in the tribe Rinoreeae and the genus Gloeospermum. Twelve cyclotides from two Panamanian species, Gloeospermum pauciflorum Hekking and Gloeospermum blakeanum (Standl.) Hekking (designated Glopa A-E and Globa A-G, respectively) were characterised through cDNA screening and protein isolation. Screening of cDNA for the oxidative folding enzymes protein-disulfide isomerase (PDI) and thioredoxin (TRX) resulted in positive hits in both species. These enzymes have demonstrated roles in oxidative folding of cyclotides in Rubiaceae, and results presented here indicate that Violaceae plants have evolved similar mechanisms of cyclotide biosynthesis. We also describe PDI and TRX sequences from a third cyclotide-expressing Violaceae species, Viola biflora L., which further support this hypothesis.

  • Nursing students' experiences with type 2 diabetes in Jordan: a qualitative content analysis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Home Health Care Management & Practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1084-8223 .- 1552-6739. ; 29:2, s. 103-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prevalence of type 2 diabetes has increased worldwide due to lifestyle factors, such as obesity and inactivity and nurses have an essential role in supporting healthy life situations. The aim was to describe nursing students' experiences with type 2 diabetes in Jordan regard to prevention and nursing care. Interviews with eight nursing students were performed. Data were analyzed using content analysis. One category and two subcategories were generated: managing challenges in daily life to prevent type 2 diabetes and promote patient safety, managing risk factors, and dealing with difficulties. Empowerment and person-centered care are tools to increase patients’ self-care to motivate them to live a healthy lifestyle within the whole family to prevent and decrease illness.

  • Mutation analysis of the MLH1, MSH2 and MSH6 genes in patients with double primary cancers of the colorectum and the endometrium: a population-based study in northern Sweden
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - : Wiley. - 0020-7136 .- 1097-0215. ; 109:3, s. 370-376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is an autosomal dominant disorder that predisposes to predominantly colorectal and endometrial cancers due to germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes, mainly MLH1, MSH2 and in families with excess endometrial cancer also MSH6. In this population-based study, we analysed the mutation spectrum of the MLH1, MSH2 and MSH6 genes in a cohort of patients with microsatellite unstable double primary tumours of the colorectum and the endometrium by PCR, DHPLC and sequencing. Fourteen of the 23 patients (61%) had sequence variants in MLH1, MSH2 or MSH6 that likely affect the protein function. A majority (10/14) of the mutations was found among probands diagnosed before age 50. Five of the mutations (36%) were located in MLH1, 3 (21%) in MSH2 and 6 (43%) in MSH6. MSH6 seem to have larger impact in our population than in other populations, due to a founder effect since all of the MSH6 families originate from the same geographical area. MSH6 mutation carriers have later age of onset of both colorectal cancer (62 vs. 51 years) and endometrial cancer (58 vs. 48 years) and a larger proportion of endometrial cancer than MLH1 or MSH2 mutation carriers. We can conclude that patients with microsatellite unstable double primary cancers of the colorectum and the endometrium have a very high risk of carrying a mutation not only in MLH1 or MSH2 but also in MSH6, especially if they get their first cancer diagnosis before the age of 50. • The moral imperative of children’s academic excellence: Tensions and contradictions in Chinese middle-class parenting styles
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It is well documented that Chinese parents invest enormous amounts of time, resources and emotions in their children’s education, as if a life worthwhile is a life where education and self-cultivation is at the fore. Taking part in and excelling in educational activities is a moral imperative that marks childhood, whereby achieving in school is not only an act of filial piety, but also a patriotic deed, where the good-student-subject contributes to the advancement of the nation. Educational desire, seen across China and other East Asian societies, feeds off and contributes to an intrinsic web of subjects and public and private institutions that govern themselves as much as they are governed by the state. One key set of actors, subsumed in this web, is parents who both set goals and aspirations for their children’s academic achievement, and manage, support and coach their children in achieving these goals, often with the help of tutors and extra-curricular schools. This paper explores some of the tensions and contradictions in Chinese middle-class parenting styles aiming at academic excellence on part of their young children. Drawing on fieldwork in Beijing, Shanghai and Singapore, various norms and practices are delineated, pointing at tensions and contradictions of the moral imperative of children’s academic excellence. As we show, these tensions cannot be understood without taking into account aspirations for social mobility and intergenerational relations on the one hand, and concerns over (mental) health and wellbeing and the moral imperative of being a good parent on the other hand.

  • Doing Ethnographic Research in Chinese Families: Reflections on Methodological Concerns from Two Asian Cities
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Methods. - 1609-4069. ; 10:3, s. 265-281
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper compares and contrasts the ethnographic practices of two non-native researchers – a Singaporean researcher studying families in mainland China and a Swedish researcher studying Chinese families in Singapore. A novel conceptual frame of ‘radius of observation positions’ has been proposed to explicate the extent of intrusion and intimacy to which researchers may venture in the private family domain. The opportunities and challenges of two positions of observation within this radius are discussed. The choice of position is largely influenced by the interacting forces of the contextual and cultural factors as well as the personhood of the researcher. The authors call for special attention to cultural sensitivity in conducting Chinese family research. Families are embedded in culture, and the possibility of accessing family spaces hinges on one’s awareness of the intricacies of family cultures and realistic assessment of one’s strengths and limitations in handling complex family dynamics.

  • An app for supporting older people receiving home care - usage, aspects of health and health literacy : a quasi-experimental study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making. - London : BioMed Central. - 1472-6947. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: During the last decade, there has been an increase in studies describing use of mHealth, using smartphones with apps, in the healthcare system by a variety of populations. Despite this, few interventions including apps are targeting older people receiving home care. Developing mobile technology to its full potential of being interactive in real time remains a challenge. The current study is part of a larger project for identifying and managing health concerns via an app by using real-time data. The aim of the study was to describe older people's usage of an app and to evaluate the impact of usage on aspects of health and health literacy over time.METHODS: A quasi-experimental design was employed. Seventeen older people self-reported health concerns via Interaktor twice a week for 3-months and answered questionnaires at baseline, the end of the intervention and at a 6-month follow-up. Logged data on app usage and data on Sense of Coherence, Health Index, Nutrition Form for the Elderly, Geriatric Depression Scale-20, Swedish Communicative and Critical Health Literacy and Swedish Functional Health Literacy were collected and analysed using descriptive and non-parametric inferential statistics.RESULTS: The median usage of the app as intended was 96%. Pain was one of the most reported health concerns and was also the health concern that triggered an alert (n = 33). The older people's communicative and critical health literacy improved significantly over time. Regarding the scores of Sense of Coherence, Health Index, Nutritional Form for the Elderly, Geriatric Depression Scale-20 and Swedish Functional Health Literacy scale, there were no significant differences over time.CONCLUSIONS: The high app usage showed that an app may be a suitable tool for some older people living alone and receiving home care. The results indicate that the usage of Interaktor can support older people by significantly improving their communicative and critical health literacy. Aspects of health were not shown to be affected by the usage of the app. Further research with larger sample is needed for evaluation the effect on health literacy, and which aspects of health of importance to support by an app.

  • Developing and evaluating an interactive app to support self-care among older persons receiving home care
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The proportion of older persons worldwide is growing. With older age, complex health problems may occur and the need for home care increases. To support older persons to maintain health and self-care, innovative ways need to be developed. The aim of the project was to develop and evaluate an interactive app among older persons receiving home care. The project had several phases: i) to define and understand the problem ii) develop the intervention iii) develop and optimise evaluation. Qualitative and quantitative methods were employed. Data were collected through a scoping review, interviews with healthcare experts, older persons and nursing assistants (study I); interviews with older persons (studies II, III); focus groups with homecare nurses (study II). Questionnaires at baseline, end of intervention and 6-month follow-up; with instruments to assess aspects of health, health literacy, self-care, and a study specific question regarding sense of security were used (studies III-IV). Logged data from reported health concerns, alerts, and notes were collected (study IV). Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis (study I), thematic analysis (study II), qualitative content analysis with directed approach (study III) and descriptive and inferential statistics (studies III, IV). Results: Important aspects for health and self-care from the older persons’ perspectives were described as: frame of mind, having relationships and social activities, physical ability and concerns, and maintaining self-care (I). These results were included in the app as questions with self-care advice, graphs and alerts to homecare nurses. The app use was described as an enabler for learning (II). The older persons showed improved communicative and critical health literacy at the 6- month follow-up (IV). They described an increased sense of security (II and III), which decreased at the 6-month follow-up (III). They expressed increased self-confidence (II) and support in self-care, but reported a decrease in self-care ability at the 6-month follow-up (III). App usage was high, with the health concern pain triggering the most alerts (IV). Their aspects of health were unchanged at the three assessments points (IV). In this context using an app may increase older persons’ participation in their care. The results show that for some older persons, an app can be implemented as a tool for support in conventional home care.

  • Feasibility and acceptability of an interactive ICT-platform in older adults for participatory care
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: ACENDIO 2015. - Dublin : Association for Common European Nursing Diagnoses (ACIENDO). - 9781782805175 ; , s. 328-330
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The increasing ageing population puts demands on society and particularly on health care system to promote a health related quality of life. Thus, it is necessary to develop strategies that promote self-care among older adults that enable them to live in their own homes as long as possible and to make them feel safe and involved in their care. In order to encourage their participation in their care, new innovative solutions are needed. The market of information-and communication technology (ICT)-based platforms directed to the health care arena has exploded during recent years. Despite the large range of products few are developed with interactive components. In collaboration within a multicenter research group and a Swedish health care company (Health Navigator) an ICT-platform is developed for use in a mobile phone or tablet that includes an interactive mobile application for reporting problems and concerns. This platform is unique through the real-time communication enabling rapid management of earlydetected problems.Aim: The aim with the project is to evaluate an ICT-platform by older adults living in own homes with assistance from home care nurses in a community in Sweden.Method: The study is prospective and has a mixed methods approach advocated for the evaluation of new technologies within healthcare. This includes a quantitative approach to evaluate effects, qualitative methods such as interviews and focus group discussions to evaluate how patients and health care professionals perceive the intervention. The design is underpinned by the Medical Research Council’s complex intervention evaluation framework. Thirty older adults >65 years or above, living in their own homes, with assistance from home care nurses have through an application in a tablet reported health status twice a week and when needed during three months. They have continuous access to evidence based self-care advice directly related to their reported problems and concerns. The risk assessment model sends alarms to involved nurses via text messaging (SMS). This initiates an interaction between the nurse and the older adult who is contacted by telephone to discuss the reported problems. Furthermore, the nurses in charge can also log into a web-interface and view the reports of the participants. Individually interviews with the older adults and focus groups interviews with nurses are conducted after the study period. Questionnaires are given to the older adults before intervention, after the study´s completed and after six months with primarily main outcomes as self-care, health literacy and well-being. A control group with older adults 65 years and above is used as a comparison. Results: Preliminary results will be presented with focus on feasibility, acceptability and benefit of the ICT-platform from the perspective of older adults and home care nurses. Additional logged data on the frequency of symptom reports, alerts, and page views will also be presented.Summary: An interactive ICT-platform is developed and used by older adults to report problems and concerns which enabling rapid management of early-detected problems. This study aims to evaluate the ICT-platform by thirty older adults living in own home with assistance from home care nurses.

  • Perspectives of health and self-care among older persons-To be implemented in an interactive information and communication technology-platform
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing. - Chichester : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 0962-1067 .- 1365-2702. ; 26:23-24, s. 4745-4755
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To acquire knowledge regarding the contents to be implemented in an interactive information and communication technology-platform perceived to be relevant to health and self-care among older persons based on the literature, healthcare professionals and the older persons themselves.BACKGROUND: The growing ageing population places demands on the healthcare system to promote healthy ageing and to strengthen the older person's self-care ability. This requires innovative approaches to facilitate communication between the older person and healthcare professionals, and to increase the older person's participation in their care. An information and communication technology-platform could be used for this purpose, but the content needs to be relevant to both the older persons and the healthcare professionals.DESIGN: Descriptive qualitative design.METHODS: This study was based on three samplings: a scoping review of the literature (n = 20 articles), interviews with healthcare professionals (n = 5) and a secondary analysis of interviews with older persons (n = 8) and nursing assistants (n = 7). The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis.RESULTS: Four areas were identified to be of relevance to older persons' perceived health: frame of mind, having relationships and social activities, physical ability and concerns, and maintaining self-care. Self-care was described in the literature and by the healthcare professionals more than by the older persons.CONCLUSIONS: The results show a concordance in the data samplings that give a clear indication of the areas relevant to older persons' health and self-care that can be integrated in an interactive information and communication technology-platform for use in regular daily care assessments. Descriptions of self-care were limited indicating a possible gap in knowledge that requires further research.RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Areas relevant to older persons' health and self-care could be used for regular assessment to support and promote healthy ageing.

    • THE STUDY'S RATIONALE: The need for home care among older persons is increasing, and mHealth is evolving to help meet the challenge. When developing an app to help maintain their health, it is essential to incorporate older persons' preferences.AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe and evaluate the experiences of self-care support and sense of security among older persons using an interactive app to report health concerns.METHODOLOGICAL DESIGN AND JUSTIFICATION: The study had a descriptive and evaluative design. Qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to achieve a broader understanding.ETHICAL ISSUES AND APPROVAL: Ethical approval was obtained from the Regional Ethical Review Board. The older persons received verbal and oral information about the study and gave written informed consent.RESEARCH METHODS: Questionnaires (n = 17 older persons) answered at baseline, end of the intervention and at a 6-month follow-up were analysed with statistical analysis. Interviews (n = 17 older persons) conducted at the end of the intervention were analysed using a qualitative directed approach.MEASUREMENTS AND INTERVENTION: The questionnaire included the Appraisal of Self-care Agency Scale and a question concerning sense of security. For 3 months, the older persons used an app for regular reporting of health concerns. The app included self-care advice, graphs and a risk assessment model that generated alerts directly to the nurses.RESULTS: The older persons described how self-care and sense of security increased at the end of intervention, but statistically, it was shown to decrease afterwards.STUDY LIMITATIONS: The small sample size for statistical analysis.CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that an app can be a complementary tool to conventional home care that can increase older persons' sense of security and self-care ability. The results mirror the older persons' awareness that the support they received with the app was only temporary. Larger studies are needed for generalisation.

  • Testing an app for reporting health concerns-Experiences from older people and home care nurses
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Older People Nursing. - Hoboken : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1748-3735 .- 1748-3743. ; 13:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims and objectives: To explore the experiences of using an app among older people with home-based health care and their nurses. Background: Few information and communication technology innovations have been developed and tested for older people with chronic conditions living at home with home-based health care support. Innovative ways to support older people's health and self-care are needed. Design: Explorative qualitative design. Methods: For 3 months to report health concerns, older people receiving home-based health care used an interactive app, which included direct access to self-care advice, graphs and a risk assessment model that sends alerts to nurses for rapid management. Interviews with older people (n = 17) and focus group discussions with home care nurses (n = 12) were conducted and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: The findings reveal that a process occurs. Using the app, the older people participated in their care, and the app enabled learning and a new way of communication. The interaction gave a sense of security and increased self-confidence among older people. The home care nurses viewed the alerts as appropriate for the management of health concerns. However, all participants experienced challenges in using new technology and had suggestions for improvement. Conclusions: The use of an app appears to increase the older people's participation in their health care and offers them an opportunity to be an active partner in their care. The app as a new way to interact with home care nurses increased the feeling of security. The older people were motivated to learn to use the app and described potential use for it in the future. Implications for practice: The use of an app should be considered as a useful information and communication technology innovation that can improve communication and accessibility for older people with home-based health care. © 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

  • Ambiguous aspirations: Parenting strategies around young children’s education in urban South Korea and Singapore
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • South Korea and Singapore are widely recognized for their competitive education systems and for consistently topping international student assessment tests. They also share a ballooning private tuition industry, fueled by parents’ anxiety over their children’s academic achievements. This paper is based on a comparative ethnographic study on parenting strategies around young children’s (aged 4-12) education, and how these strategies intersect with class, gender and generation. Our findings indicate that there is a predominant assumption among parents that a child’s chances of succeeding in school and future professional life is directly dependent on addressing possible ’learning gaps’ in early childhood. Parents fear that their children will fall behind academically if these learning gaps are not addressed, and moreover, that the failure to perform academically would have a life-long negative impact on the child’s self-confidence. At the same time, this paper points to a more complex and ambivalent diversification of parental involvement in education, which can be conceptualized as a tension between the ambition to secure conventional career paths (academic achievements) versus the nurturing of the child’s own needs, interests and emotional well-being. We propose that parents’ attempts at balancing these seemingly paradoxical aspirations must be understood in relation to an expertise-based approach to parenting and a shifting perception of children, in which children are seen as vulnerable to all sorts of risks (cf Faircloth 2014). By comparing and contrasting South Korea and Singapore, this paper seeks to understand and contextualize urban middle-class parents’ ambiguous aspirations in relation to notions of risk, fear and responsible parenthood.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Renewable energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-1481 .- 1879-0682. ; 81, s. 251-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study on in-bed material catalytic reforming of tar/CH4 has been performed in the 150 kW allothermal gasifier at Mid Sweden University (MIUN). The major challenge in biomass fluidised-bed gasification to produce high-quality syngas, is the reforming of tars and CH4. The MIUN gasifier has a unique design suitable for in-bed tar/CH4 catalytic reforming and continuously internal regeneration of the reactive bed material. This paper evaluates the catalytic effects of olivine and Fe-impregnated olivine (10%wtFe/olivine Catalyst) with reference to silica sand in the MIUN dual fluidised bed (DFB) gasifier. Furthermore, a comparative experimental test is carried out with the same operation condition and bed-materials when the gasifier is operated in the mode of single bubbling fluidised bed (BFB), in order to detect the internal regeneration of the catalytic bed materials in the DFB operation. The behaviour of catalytic and non-catalytic bed materials differs when they are used in the DFB and the BFB. Fe/olivine and olivine in the BFB mode give lower tar and CH4 content together with higher H-2 + CO concentration, and higher H-2/CO ratio, compared to DFB mode. It is hard to show a clear advantage of Fe/olivine over olivine regarding tar/CH4 catalytic reforming. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Biogas production from biological methanation of syngas
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Biomass Conference and Exhibition Proceedings. - : ETA-Florence Renewable Energies. ; , s. 512-515
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biogas to be used as gas vehicle fuel is a highly potential source to meet transport fuel demand and give a significant contribution to the Swedish target: vehicle fleet independent of fossil fuels by 2030. At present the biogas market is limited by the amount of available organic waste and the associated infrastructure. To overcome these issues, biomass could either be gasified into syngas and synthesized into bio-SNG (Synthetic Natural Gas) through catalytic methanation, or biomass gasification could be integrated into the biogas system to produce methane through biological methanation. Biomass gasification integrated in biological methanation is a relatively new idea and technology. Syngas conversion to methane by anaerobic cultures is practically unexplored, and few reports are available on this subject. Nevertheless, the pathway has been receiving intensive attractions and R&D recent years. For this purpose, a novel pathway by integrating biomass gasification into biogas system is studied in detail. This paper reviews the whole process from integration of biomass gasification into the biogas system to methane production through biological methanation: Biomass gasification > H2+CO > Biogas digester > Upgrading > Natural gas network.

    • This paper presents the BTL (biomass to liquids) laboratory of MIUN (Mid Sweden University) for production of bio-automotive fuels through biomass gasification. The process is intended to be realized in laboratory scale at MIUN with focus on key issues in the BTL technology development. Thus, the BTL laboratory becomes a resource for BTL education, research and development. The BTL laboratory is based on indirect gasification and the gasifier is a combination of a BFB steam gasifier and a CFB combustion riser. The biomass feeding system is unique in application. The syngas is automatically sampled and analyzed on-line on demand. Considering small & medium scale bio-automotive fuel plant, an oxygen plant would be too expensive to be integrated in BTL systems. An indirect gasifier is thus the choice for development to obtain a good quality high energy content synthesis gas. Based on calculation work performed by TPS, the most energy effective gasification technique is indirectly fluidized bed gasification with steam as the gasification agent. Integration of the gasifier and FT/DME/EtOH-reactors will be emphasized and a theoretic BTL model will be developed. The plan is to develop an effective and a reliable BTL technology under 100 MW possible for bio refinery integration.

  • CATALYTIC REDUCTION OF TAR/CH4 BY AN INTERNAL REFORMER IN A DFB GASIFIER
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Biomass Conference & Exhibition Proceedings. - 9788889407523 ; , s. 620-625
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An internal reformer is developed for in-situ catalytic reforming of tar and methane (CH4) in allothermal gasifiers. Reduction of tars and CH4 in the syngas is a challenge for commercialization of biomass fluidised-bed gasification technology towards advanced automotive fuel production. This paper presents an initial study on the internal reformer operated with and without Ni-catalytic pellets in the Mid Sweden University (MIUN) DFB (Dual Fluidised Bed) gasifier, by evaluation of the syngas composition and tar/CH4 content. The novelty with the application of Ni-catalyst in this paper is the selected location where intensive gas to catalytic-material and bed-material contacts improve the reforming reactions. It can be concluded that the reformer with Ni-catalytic pellets clearly gives a higher H2 content together with lower CH4 and tar contents in the syngas than the reformer without Ni-catalytic pellets. The gravimetric tar content decreases down to 5 g/m3 and the CH4 content down below 6% in the syngas. The tar content will be decreased further to lower levels, with increased gas contact to the specific surface area of the catalyst and increased catalyst surface-to-volume ratio. The new design in the MIUN gasifier increases the gasification efficiency, suppresses the tar generation and upgrades the syngas quality.

  • Conflicts and Contracts : Chinese Intergenerational Relations in Modern Singapore
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact of social change on Chinese intergenerational relations in contemporary Singapore. Within only three decades, Singapore has turned into a wealthy and sophisticated metropolis with a highly educated labor force. The massive transformation, however, has been accompanied by the emergence of a deep and complex generation gap. Apart from the leap in education, income and consumption, a generational divide has arisen with regard to language, religion and social memory. Based on ethnographic fieldwork among middle-class Chinese families, the author investigates how intergenerational expectations and obligations are challenged, reworked and/or reaffirmed in relation to the extensive societal change. The thesis argues for the importance of an analytical framework that recognizes processes of both disintegration and consolidation, and the levels at which these processes occur. While Singapore represents one of the most rapidly changing societies worldwide, the family remains a pivotal feature of society and the primary unit of support. In analyzing the continuity of intergenerational support, the author elaborates on the notion of an ?intergenerational contract?. The notion of a contract underlines the standpoint that intergenerational obligations are neither a natural fact nor immune to negotiation, but it is also a contract the parties are socialized into, rather than one that is explicitly agreed upon. The author shows that the idea of a contractual relationship between parent and child is cemented by the government's family politics, which explicitly locates the responsibility of welfare within the family. It is further argued that the intergenerational contract has to be understood not only in relation to the political economy and the state, but also in relation to the specific cultural logic whereby it is represented and interpreted. While the intergenerational contract is being reproduced on many different levels, it is not a static entity. The ethnographic record unfolds how intergenerational relations are being challenged and renegotiated in the context of extensive societal change. In this light, the thesis also examines how intergenerational support is represented and interpreted in relation to the global capitalist economy.

  • Doing responsible parenthood: Parental involvement in young children’s education in urban South Korea and Singapore
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Questions around parental involvement in education, not only in in East Asia but also in a global context, are significant, given the increased concern in ‘population quality’ and the ever-growing education market. South Korea and Singapore are widely recognized for their competitive education systems and for consistently topping international student assessment tests. They also share a ballooning private tuition industry, fueled by parents’ anxiety over their children’s academic achievements. This paper explores how Korean and Singaporean parents navigate and prioritize their children’s education, in relation to notions of caregiving, childhood and academic performance. Based on ethnographic data it casts light on the multitude of strategies parents employ to handle, sometimes conflicting, ideas of proper parenthood and childhood, and the ways in which parents’ moral, emotional and material investments in their children’s education and development are intimately entangled with ideas about responsible parenting.

  • East Asian Anxieties: Child-centered Relatedness and Parents’ Care Work in Education in Singapore
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The size and ‘quality’ of the population are issues of major concern in contemporary East Asia, as fertility rates are falling and competitiveness increasingly centers on ‘a fitting’ human capital. While Singapore is located in Southeast Asia geographically speaking, it is culturally linked to East Asia in terms of its heritage of Confucianism and the Chinese language. Singapore and other East Asian countries are globally celebrated for their high academic standards and for producing students who excel in international assessment tests and rankings. In this context, parents’ involvement in children’s education is increasingly taken for granted. It is well documented in previous research that Singaporean (middle-class) parents invest substantial resources, time and emotion in supporting their children academically and developmentally. While the need for intensive parenting (cf. Hays 1996) is likely heightened in such a competitive education system, parents’ efforts and aspirations in raising their young children cannot be understood as purely strategic and calculating. On the contrary, ethnographic data highlights the complexities of parents’ risk management and how they navigate uncertainties with regard to their children’s future. Sentiments of fear of regret and guilt are particularly conspicuous in parents’ narratives around their children’s education. In this paper I propose that the transformation of traditional intergenerational expectations and the emergence of a child-centered relatedness in East Asian societies (Kipnis 2011) are vital to understand parents’ sentiments of uncertainty and guilt in relation to their children’s future. By drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Singapore, I attempt to shed light on the subjective desires, anxieties and aspirations that shapes contemporary parenting in East Asia, and address its consequences for family life and intergenerational relations.

  • Educational desires, intensive parenting and shifting notions of childhood and learning among Chinese Singaporeans
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper seeks to expand our lens on educational desires, parenting and shifting notions of childhood and learning in East Asia and beyond. While not explicitly centered on migration, I suggest that the educational mobilities needs to be understood in relation to a growing tension between parents’ desire to achieve conventional success and the desire to nurture the child’s emotional well-being. East Asian education systems are globally renowned for their high academic standards and for producing students who excel in international assessment tests and rankings. At the same time, there has been a shift of attention in education policy towards social-emotional competencies and well-being. While a top-notch education is still considered crucial to foster a competitive population, childhood is increasingly supposed to be happy and stress free. In this context, parents, mothers in particular, are expected to perform task-oriented educational work, but also to cultivate their children’s desire to learn. It is well established in previous research that children’s education and development is a pivotal dimension of (middle-class) parenting, but there is a lack of ethnographically grounded studies on the complex and contradictory demands surrounding contemporary parenthood in the domain of education. By highlighting the complex emotional and moral dimensions of Chinese Singaporean parents’ educational labor, this paper attempts to contest simplistic interpretations ‘Asian parenting cultures’.

    • This paper explores educational desires, parenting and shifting notions of childhood in contemporary Singapore. Singapore’s education system is globally renowned for its high academic standards and for producing students who excel in international assessment tests and rankings. At the same time, there has been a shift of attention in education policy towards social-emotional competencies and well-being. While a top-notch education is still considered absolutely crucial to foster a competitive and competent population, childhood is supposed to be happy and stress free. In this context, parents, mothers in particular, are expected to perform task-oriented educational work, but also to cultivate their children’s desire to learn. While it is well established in previous research that children’s education and development is a pivotal dimension of (middle-class) parenting, there is a lack of ethnographically grounded studies on the complex and contradictory demands surrounding contemporary parenthood, in Singapore and beyond. Drawing on ethnographic data, this paper suggests that parenting in the domain of education and learning is shaped by sentiments of uncertainty, fear and guilt in relation to children’s future. These sentiments, in turn, are entwined with and fueled by a deep-rooted narrative of national survival, reproduced in the form of ‘twenty-first century skills.’ By highlighting the complex emotional and moral dimensions of parents’ educational labor, this paper attempts to contest simplistic interpretations of ’Asian parenthood’ and ‘Asian parenting cultures’.

  • Educational Exit and the Pursuit of a Happy Childhood Among Singaporean Middle-Class Families
  • Ingår i: Global Networks. - 1470-2266.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On the basis of ethnographic fieldwork in Singapore, the article explores the tension between children's academic success and emotional wellbeing, and the ways in which middle-class parents navigate these conflicting aspirations. It delves into families with young children who pursue alternative lifestyles by moving abroad to a presumably less stressful environment or by homeschooling their children. The study aims to understand how parents who ‘opt out’ perceive their children's future and the sacrifices they make in pursuing alternative education for their children. Decisions were made to ‘protect’ the child from the potentially negative effects of a competitive education system, while pursuing an alternative childhood and school–life balance. East Asian education systems are globally renowned for their high academic standards and for producing students who score at the top on international assessment tests and rankings. In this context, alternative educational pursuits are both less established and less well understood, yet they are central to understanding emerging aspirations of wellbeing as well as the reconfiguration of conventional ideals of upward social mobility.

    • Abstract in UndeterminedThis paper addresses the use of ethnographic methods in the field known as family studies. While ethnographic methods are fundamental in the anthropological study of kinship and family, quantitative methods have long dominated family studies. To grasp the ideas and actions of human beings, however, we must pay attention to their intentions and recognize that intentions are not necessarily simply pragmatic reactions to economic or political conditions. One reward of ethnographic fieldwork is that the extended timeframe enables the researcher to gain insights into the construction of meaning in everyday life. Based on the author's experiences during long-term fieldwork on intergenerational expectations and obligations in Singapore, the paper demonstrates how the role of the researcher, as well as the accumulation of ethnographic data, is shaped and constructed in interaction with informants. While an anthropological approach contributes to an in-depth understanding of family practices on the ground, it requires a high degree of self-reflexivity with regard to fieldwork relations and the interpretation of data, since the ethnographer's social position, including age, gender, class, and ethnicity/nationality, inevitably shapes the access to informants. The paper sheds light on the different aspects of fieldwork and the process of ethnographic understanding.

  • Expanding the lens on child-centered relatedness and parents’ care work in education: reflections from fieldwork in Singapore
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper aims to initiate a discussion on the meanings and manifestations of child-centered relatedness, with a particular focus on parents’ educational care work and how parents navigate sentiments of uncertainty and risk in relation to their children’s future. By drawing on examples from ethnographic fieldwork in East Asia, I hope to contribute to expanding the lens on the moral and emotional dimensions of parenting, educational care work and child-centered relatedness in the Nordic context. Questions around parental involvement are significant in a global context, given parents’ intensified role and engagement in their young children’s education; parents everywhere are faced with increasing expectations to attend to their young children’s learning and cognitive development. This paper focuses on how parents actively negotiate ideologies and norms of care in everyday life. Singapore’s education system is often celebrated for its high academic standards and for topping international surveys of student achievement. While this is usually assumed to be a result of rigorous examinations, Singapore has, in fact, initiated extensive educational reforms to reduce the emphasis on exams and grades. While a first-class education is still considered crucial to foster a competitive and competent population, childhood is now also supposed to be happy and stress free (see Bach and Christensen, 2021; Göransson 2023) Parents are faced with clearly ambiguous expectations. They are expected to play an active role in their children’s education, like helping with homework or preparing for exams, but they are also encouraged to cultivate their children’s genuine passion to learn and in general ensure them a happy childhood. Children’s psychological and emotional well-being was a recurring topic in interviews with parents, but at the same time they were deeply concerned about their children’s academic performance. That contemporary parenting is as a key site for risk management has been well established in previous research (e.g., Cooper 2014; Faircloth 2014; Furedi 2008; Lee, Macvarish and Bristow 2010; Rosen and Suissa 2020; Shirani et al 2011; Vincent and Ball, 2007). However, parental efforts and aspirations in finding the right balance cannot be understood as purely strategic and calculating. On the contrary, parents’ risk management in the domain of education is clearly a moral and emotional venture, entangled with fears of guilt and regret. Ethnography offers an empirically founded understanding of the cultural logics of parents’ care work in the domain of education; it takes seriously the subjective desires and aspirations that shapes contemporary parenting. Given the global knowledge economy and widespread concerns about children’s education and well-being, such insights are vital.

  • Ingår i: Fuel. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-2361 .- 1873-7153. ; 90:4, s. 1340-1349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a preliminary test on the 150 kWth allothermal biomass gasifier at MIUN (Mid Sweden University) in Härnösand, Sweden. The MIUN gasifier is a combination of a fluidised bed gasifier and a CFB riser as a combustor with a design suitable for in-built tar/CH4 catalytic reforming. The test was carried out by two steps: 1) fluid-dynamic study; 2) measurements of gas composition and tar. A novel solid circulation measurement system which works at high bed temperatures is developed in the presented work. The results show the dependency of bed material circulation rate on the superficial gas velocity in the combustor, the bed material inventory and the aeration of solids flow between the bottoms of the gasifier and the combustor. A strong influence of circulation rate on the temperature difference between the combustor and the gasifier was identified. The syngas analysis showed that, as steam/biomass (S/B) ratio increases, CH4 content decreases and H2/CO ratio increases. Furthermore the total tar content decreases with increasing steam/biomass ratio and increasing temperature.  The biomass gasification technology at MIUN is simple, cheap, reliable, and can obtain a syngas of high CO+H2concentration with sufficient high ratio of H2 to CO, which may be suitable for synthesis of Methane, DME, FT-fuels or alcohol fuels. The measurement results of MIUN gasifier have been compared with other gasifiers. The main differences can be observed in the H2 and the CO content, as well as the tar content. These can be explained by differences in the feed systems, operating temperature, S/B ratio or bed material catalytic effect etc..

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When it comes to pupils in need of special support and pupils with disabilities, Sweden's compulsory school system is sometimes considered a one-track system. This article analyses and critically discusses current policy and practices at various levels of Sweden's compulsory school system for these pupils. The analysis traces three themes at the national and municipal levels: (1) values and goals; (2) organisation and placement of pupils; and (3) importance of categories in obtaining support. A rather complex picture emerges from this analysis. Several conclusions are made: (1) state policies leave a lot of room for interpretation at the municipal and school levels, and this results in an extensive variation; (2) Swedish state policy is not as inclusive as is often stated; (3) celebration of difference seems to be hard to achieve; (4) learning goals can be a double-edged sword with regard to inclusion; and (5) most pupils appear to enjoy participation in school, and in an international perspective, Swedish classrooms seem to be largely democratic.

  • Internal Tar/CH4 Reforming in Biomass Dual Fluidised Bed Gasifiers towards Fuel Synthesis
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Production of high-quality syngas from biomass gasification in a dual fluidised bed gasifier (DFBG) has made a significant progress in R&D and Technology demonstration. An S&M scale bio-automotive fuel plant close to the feedstock resources is preferable as biomass feedstock is widely sparse and has relatively low density, low heating value and high moisture content. This requires simple, reliable and cost-effective production of clean and good syngas. Indirect DFBGs, with steam as the gasification agent, produce a syngas of high content H2 and CO with 12-20 MJ/mn3 heating value. The Mid Sweden University (MIUN) gasifier, built for research on synthetic fuel production, is a dual fluidised bed gasifier. Reforming of tars and CH4 (except for methanation application) in the syngas is a major challenge for commercialization of biomass fluidised-bed gasification technology towards automotive fuel production. A good syngas from DFBGs can be obtained by optimised design and operation of the gasifier, by the use of active catalytic bed material and internal reforming. This thesis presents a series of experimental tests with different operation parameters, reforming of tar and CH4 with catalytic bed material and reforming of tar and CH4 with catalytic internal reformer. The first test was carried out to evaluate the optimal operation and performance of the MIUN gasifier. The test provides basic information for temperature control in the combustor and the gasifier by the bed material circulation rate.  After proven operation and performance of the MIUN gasifier, an experimental study on in-bed material catalytic reforming of tar/CH4 is performed to evaluate the catalytic effects of the olivine and Fe-impregnated olivine (10%wtFe/olivine Catalyst) bed materials, with reference to non-catalytic silica sand operated in the mode of dual fluidised beds (DFB). A comparative experimental test is then carried out with the same operation condition and bed-materials but when the gasifier was operated in the mode of single bubbling fluidised bed (BFB). The behaviour of catalytic and non-catalytic bed materials differs when they are used in the DFB and the BFB. Fe/olivine and olivine in the BFB mode give lower tar and CH4 content together with higher H2+CO concentration, and higher H2/CO ratio, compared to DFB mode. It is hard to show a clear advantage of Fe/olivine over olivine regarding tar/CH4 catalytic reforming.  In order to significantly reduce the tar/CH4 contents, an internal reformer, referred to as the FreeRef reformer, is developed for in-situ catalytic reforming of tar and CH4 using Ni-catalyst in an environment of good gas-solids contact at high temperature.  A study on the internal reformer filled with and without Ni-catalytic pellets was carried out by evaluation of the syngas composition and tar/CH4 content. It can be concluded that the reformer with Ni-catalytic pellets clearly gives a higher H2 content together with lower CH4 and tar contents in the syngas than the reformer without Ni-catalytic pellets. The gravimetric tar content decreases from 25 g/m3 down to 5 g/m3 and the CH4 content from 11% down below 6% in the syngas. The MIUN gasifier has a unique design suitable for in-bed tar/CH4 catalytic reforming and continuously internal regeneration of the reactive bed material. The novel design in the MIUN gasifier increases the gasification efficiency, suppresses the tar generation and upgrades the syngas composition.

    • Reforming of tars and methane (CH4) in syngas is a significant challenge for low-temperature biomass gasification. For a dual fluidised bed gasifier (DFBG), catalytic bed materials are usually used to promote the reforming reactions. Intensive contact between gas and catalytic bed material at high temperature enhances the internal tar/CH4 reforming. The MIUN gasifier, built for research into synthetic fuel production, is a dual fluidised bed gasifier (DFBG). The results with different bed materials (silica sand, olivine and Fe-impregnated olivine) give roughly equivalent amounts of methane and gravimetric tar in the raw untreated syngas, and need to be reduced to an acceptably low level. The gasification research group at MIUN investigates a novel design in the MIUN gasifier, to increase the gasification efficiency, suppress the tar generation and to upgrade the syngas quality. The first step is taken towards a novel design in the MIUN gasifier. The application is expected to significantly enhance the syngas quality.
