  • Global Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Stroke Volumes and Cerebrovascular Events: A 1-Year Follow-up.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Neurology. - 1526-632X. ; 100:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Declines in stroke admission, IV thrombolysis (IVT), and mechanical thrombectomy volumes were reported during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a paucity of data on the longer-term effect of the pandemic on stroke volumes over the course of a year and through the second wave of the pandemic. We sought to measure the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volumes of stroke admissions, intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), IVT, and mechanical thrombectomy over a 1-year period at the onset of the pandemic (March 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021) compared with the immediately preceding year (March 1, 2019, to February 29, 2020).We conducted a longitudinal retrospective study across 6 continents, 56 countries, and 275 stroke centers. We collected volume data for COVID-19 admissions and 4 stroke metrics: ischemic stroke admissions, ICH admissions, IVT treatments, and mechanical thrombectomy procedures. Diagnoses were identified by their ICD-10 codes or classifications in stroke databases. There were 148,895 stroke admissions in the 1 year immediately before compared with 138,453 admissions during the 1-year pandemic, representing a 7% decline (95% CI [95% CI 7.1-6.9]; p < 0.0001). ICH volumes declined from 29,585 to 28,156 (4.8% [5.1-4.6]; p < 0.0001) and IVT volume from 24,584 to 23,077 (6.1% [6.4-5.8]; p < 0.0001). Larger declines were observed at high-volume compared with low-volume centers (all p < 0.0001). There was no significant change in mechanical thrombectomy volumes (0.7% [0.6-0.9]; p = 0.49). Stroke was diagnosed in 1.3% [1.31-1.38] of 406,792 COVID-19 hospitalizations. SARS-CoV-2 infection was present in 2.9% ([2.82-2.97], 5,656/195,539) of all stroke hospitalizations. There was a global decline and shift to lower-volume centers of stroke admission volumes, ICH volumes, and IVT volumes during the 1st year of the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the prior year. Mechanical thrombectomy volumes were preserved. These results suggest preservation in the stroke care of higher severity of disease through the first pandemic year. This study is registered under NCT04934020.

  • Large-scale migration into Britain during the Middle to Late Bronze Age
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; , s. 588-594
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Present-day people from England and Wales harbour more ancestry derived from Early European Farmers (EEF) than people of the Early Bronze Age1. To understand this, we generated genome-wide data from 793 individuals, increasing data from the Middle to Late Bronze and Iron Age in Britain by 12-fold, and Western and Central Europe by 3.5-fold. Between 1000 and 875 BC, EEF ancestry increased in southern Britain (England and Wales) but not northern Britain (Scotland) due to incorporation of migrants who arrived at this time and over previous centuries, and who were genetically most similar to ancient individuals from France. These migrants contributed about half the ancestry of Iron Age people of England and Wales, thereby creating a plausible vector for the spread of early Celtic languages into Britain. These patterns are part of a broader trend of EEF ancestry becoming more similar across central and western Europe in the Middle to Late Bronze Age, coincident with archaeological evidence of intensified cultural exchange2-6. There was comparatively less gene flow from continental Europe during the Iron Age, and Britain's independent genetic trajectory is also reflected in the rise of the allele conferring lactase persistence to ~50% by this time compared to ~7% in central Europe where it rose rapidly in frequency only a millennium later. This suggests that dairy products were used in qualitatively different ways in Britain and in central Europe over this period.

  • Spectroscopy along flerovium decay chains: Discovery of 280Ds and an excited state in 282Cn
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 126:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A nuclear spectroscopy experiment was conducted to study α-decay chains stemming from isotopes of flerovium (element Z=114). An upgraded TASISpec decay station was placed behind the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. The fusion-evaporation reactions 48Ca+242Pu and 48Ca+244Pu provided a total of 32 flerovium-candidate decay chains, of which two and eleven were firmly assigned to 286Fl and 288Fl, respectively. A prompt coincidence between a 9.60(1)-MeV α-particle event and a 0.36(1)-MeV conversion electron marked the first observation of an excited state in an even-even isotope of the heaviest man-made elements, namely 282Cn. Spectroscopy of 288Fl decay chains fixed Qα=10.06(1) MeV. In one case, a Qα=9.46(1)-MeV decay from 284Cn into 280Ds was observed, with 280Ds fissioning after only 518 μs. The impact of these findings, aggregated with existing data on decay chains of 286,288Fl, on the size of an anticipated shell gap at proton number Z=114 is discussed in light of predictions from two beyond-mean-field calculations, which take into account triaxial deformation.

  • Consensus statements and recommendations from the ESO-Karolinska Stroke Update Conference, Stockholm 11-13 November 2018.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Stroke Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 2396-9873 .- 2396-9881. ; 4:4, s. 307-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the European Stroke Organisation-Karolinska Stroke Update Conference is to provide updates on recent stroke therapy research and to give an opportunity for the participants to discuss how these results may be implemented into clinical routine. The meeting started 22 years ago as Karolinska Stroke Update, but since 2014 it is a joint conference with European Stroke Organisation. Importantly, it provides a platform for discussion on the European Stroke Organisation guidelines process and on recommendations to the European Stroke Organisation guidelines committee on specific topics. By this, it adds a direct influence from stroke professionals otherwise not involved in committees and work groups on the guideline procedure. The discussions at the conference may also inspire new guidelines when motivated. The topics raised at the meeting are selected by the scientific programme committee mainly based on recent important scientific publications. This year's European Stroke Organisation-Karolinska Stroke Update Meeting was held in Stockholm on 11-13 November 2018. There were 11 scientific sessions discussed in the meeting including two short sessions. Each session except the short sessions produced a consensus statement (Full version with background, issues, conclusions and references are published as web-material and at www.eso-karolinska.org and http://eso-stroke.org) and recommendations which were prepared by a writing committee consisting of session chair(s), scientific secretary and speakers. These statements were presented to the 250 participants of the meeting. In the open meeting, general participants commented on the consensus statement and recommendations and the final document were adjusted based on the discussion from the general participants Recommendations (grade of evidence) were graded according to the 1998 Karolinska Stroke Update meeting with regard to the strength of evidence. Grade A Evidence: Strong support from randomised controlled trials and statistical reviews (at least one randomised controlled trial plus one statistical review). Grade B Evidence: Support from randomised controlled trials and statistical reviews (one randomised controlled trial or one statistical review). Grade C Evidence: No reasonable support from randomised controlled trials, recommendations based on small randomised and/or non-randomised controlled trials evidence.

  • Combating Money Laundering in Eurasia : Lessons from Kyrgyzstan and Georgia
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: China and Eurasia Forum Quarterly. - 1653-4212. ; 6:3, s. 21-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anti-money laundering (AML) policies are instrumental both in combating organized crime and political corruption and in promoting financial transparency and economic growth. This article provides an overview of AML efforts in Eurasia, with a particular focus on Central Asia and the South Caucasus. De facto achievements in the fight against money laundering often lag behind legal frameworks and AML regulations are sometimes misused as political tools. Within their respective regions, Kyrgyzstan and Georgia stand out as the most successful countries. Kyrgyzstan has adopted AML regulations but has not taken many steps towards enforcing them. Individual banks, however, may implement AML regulations more quickly than national regulators to gain a competitive advantage. Following the Rose Revolution, Georgia adopted and began to actively enforce AML regulations. Tbilisi’s AML progress is linked to political will stemming from a unique set of domestic and foreign policy considerations.

  • Cardiac beta1-adrenoceptor autoantibodies in human heart disease: rationale and design of the Etiology, Titre-Course, and Survival (ETiCS) Study.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European journal of heart failure : journal of the Working Group on Heart Failure of the European Society of Cardiology. - : Wiley. - 1879-0844. ; 12:7, s. 753-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evidence for a pathophysiologic relevance of autoimmunity in human heart disease has substantially increased over the past years. Conformational autoantibodies stimulating the cardiac beta1-adrenoceptor (beta1-aabs) are considered of importance in heart failure development and clinical pilot studies have shown their prognostic significance in human 'idiopathic' cardiomyopathy.

  • Musik baut Brücken? Über Bedingungen und Schwierigkeiten transnationaler Kulturforschung
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Vom alten Norden zum neuen Europa: Politische Kultur im Ostseeraum. Festschrift für Bernd Henningsen. - 9783830517818 ; , s. 409-422
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This contribution deals with the topic of transnationalism as it has developed in the humanities in the last two decades. The starting point for the reflections is the author's experiences over the course of two research projects in the years 1996 to 2003. "Musik baut Brücken?" seeks to highlight some of the definitions and difficulties of "transnationalism" which have become obvious in several debates and in research projects. Employing illuminating, empirical examples, this text pays particular attention to music, folk songs and community singing from a Swedish-German perspective.

  • Political factors affecting AML/CFT in post-communist Eurasia : the case of Georgia
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Money Laundering Control. - London : Henry Stewart. - 1368-5201. ; 12:1, s. 59-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of anti-money laundering (AML) efforts and high-risk sectors in Georgia, and explain changes in this field over time. Design/methodology/approach – This case-study draws on a political economy-approach, based on the argument that “political will” provides the best explanation for the quality of AML efforts in transitional economies, as opposed to “technical assistance” or the sophistication of the domestic financial system. Findings – The study finds that AML efforts have drastically improved in Georgia following the Rose Revolution, even though significant high-risk sectors remain and a certain tendency towards “selective implementation” of AML regulations can be detected. Research limitations/implications – Implies that the “political will” of the ruling elite and the promotion thereof should be increasingly incorporated into research on AML, especially as regards explaining the quality of implementation and enforcement of existing laws. Practical implications – Implies that technical peer evaluations resulting in “naming and shaming” of jurisdictions that do not live up to international AML standards may not in and by themselves be enough to further efficient implementation, but need to be complemented by policies creating incentives for the domestic political elite to encourage de facto implementation of de jureregulations. Originality/value – Provides the first comprehensive overview of AML efforts in Georgia and points to important explanatory factors underlying changes in this field.
