  • Influence of the medium length on high-order harmonic generation
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 32:22, s. 5397-5409
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study high-order harmonic generation using a 110 fs Ti:sapphire laser loosely focused into a variable-length gas cell filled with neon or argon at 5 mbar pressure. The harmonic intensity is recorded as a function of the medium length, varying between 2 and 21 mm. Several cases are examined, the 17th and the 29th harmonic in argon, and the 29th and 51st harmonic in neon, at the same intensity 4 x 10(14) W cm(-2). We find that the length which maximizes the harmonic yield varies from 10 mm to more than 20 mm. We discuss the different effects affecting the photon yield of the high-order harmonics.

  • H-2(He-3, t)2p reaction at 2 GeV
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001. ; 16:4, s. 583-597
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The exclusive H-2 (He-3, t)2p reaction has been studied at 2 GeV for energy transfers up to 500 MeV and triton angles up to 3.4degrees. The protons were measured in the large acceptance magnetic detector DIOGENE, in coincidence with the forward tritons detected in a dedicated magnetic arm. The energy transfer spectra extend well above the pion threshold. However, in the region of Delta excitation, the yield is less than 10% of the inclusive H-2(He-3, t) cross-section, which indicates the small contribution of the DeltaN --> NN process. The angular distributions of the two protons in their center of mass have been analysed as a function of energy transfer and triton angle and a Legendre polynomial decomposition has been achieved. These data have been compared to a model based on a coupled-channel approach for describing the NN and NDelta systems.

  • Frequency-resolved time-gated high-order harmonics
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 58:5, s. 3934-3941
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report measurements of high-order harmonic spectra obtained with a 800-nm 150-fs loser pulse with a time-varying degree of ellipticity. The modulation of the polarization in time is achieved by using birefringent optics and self-phase modulation in a glass plate. We can create one or two temporal gates of a few femtoseconds width, during which the polarization is linear and harmonic emission is efficient. The harmonic spectra observed experimentally demonstrate that harmonics generated with linear polarization are frequency chirped. The values measured experimentally are consistent with theoretical predictions based on the strong field approximation. [S1050-2947(98)05511-5].

  • Temporal coherence of high-order harmonics
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 60:6, s. 4823-4830
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Systematic studies of the temporal coherence properties of high-order harmonic radiation are presented. These complement our previous investigations [Bellini et at, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 297 (1998)], where we showed the separation of the far-field pattern of high-order harmonics into two distinct spatial regions with different coherence times. Here we show how the coherence time of the inner and outer regions changes as a function of the harmonic order, the laser intensity, and the focusing conditions. Good agreement with the predictions of the semiclassical model of harmonic generation is obtained. [S1050-2947(99)10312-3].

  • Phase-locked high-order harmonic sources
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 79:6, s. 1006-1009
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate that two harmonic sources generated independently in a xenon gas jet using the same picosecond Nd:YAG laser are locked in phase. The experiment is performed by separating a laser beam into two parallel beams focused at different locations under the nozzle of a gas jet, and therefore producing two independent sources of harmonic radiation, and studying the pattern obtained in the far field when the radiations from these sources interfere. A high and robust fringe visibility is obtained.

  • Temporal coherence of ultrashort high-order harmonic pulses
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 81:2, s. 297-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied the temporal coherence of high-order harmonics (up to the 15th order) produced by focusing 100 fs laser pulses into an argon gas jet. We measure the visibility of the interference fringes, produced when two spatially separated harmonic sources interfere in the far field, as a function of the time delay between the two sources. In general, we find long coherence times, comparable to the expected pulse durations of the harmonics. For some of the harmonics, the interference pattern exhibits two regions, with significantly different coherence times. These results are interpreted in terms of different electronic trajectories contributing to harmonic generation. [S0031-9007(98)05569-7].

  • Space–time control of free induction decay in the extreme ultraviolet
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 11:4, s. 252-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrafast extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) and X-ray sources are revolutionizing our ability to follow femtosecond processes with ångström-scale resolution. The next frontier is to simultaneously control the direction, duration and timing of such radiation. Here, we demonstrate a fully functional opto-optical modulator for XUV light, similar to modulators available at infrared (IR) and visible wavelengths. It works by using an IR pulse to control the spatial and spectral phase of the free induction decay that results from using attosecond pulses to excite a gas. The modulator allows us to send the XUV light in a direction of our choosing at a time of our choosing. The inherent synchronization of the XUV emission to the control pulse will allow laser-pump/X-ray probe experiments with sub-femtosecond time resolution.

  • Determination of Radiative Lifetimes of Excited-states In Neutral Gold Using Time-resolved Vacuum-ultraviolet Laser Spectroscopy
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 50:1, s. 209-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Natural radiative lifetimes of the states in the highly perturbed 5d10np 2P sequence in neutral gold, Au I, for n = 6-9, as well as of four of the perturbing 5d(9)6s6p 2P states, have been measured. This was done by direct excitation from the ground state with short-pulse vacuum-ultraviolet laser light and time-resolved detection of the laser-induced fluorescence. We found the lifetimes to be tau(6p P-2(1/2))=6.2(2) ns, tau(6p P-2(3/2))=4.7(2) ns, tau(7p P-2(1/2))=6.4(7) ns, tau(7p P-2(3/2))=5.3(7) ns, tau(8p P-2(1/2))=63(3) ns, tau(8p P-2(3/2))=24(2) ns, tau(9p P-2(1/2))=28(2) ns, and tau(9p P-2(3/2))=75(4) ns. For the perturbing states (two states of each term have been observed) we found tau(P-2(1/2), 60983.05 cm-1)=17.5(10) ns, tau(P-2(1/2), 62540.65 cm-1)=6.7(7) ns, tau(P-2(3/2), 58826.30 cm-1)=2.1(15) ns, and tau(P-2(3/2), 63005.62 cm-1)=2.7(15) ns. Furthermore, we have investigated the hyperfine structure of the 6p P-2(3/2) State.

  • Macroscopic studies of short-pulse high-order harmonic generation using the time-dependent Schrodinger equation
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 57:6, s. 4553-4560
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider high harmonic generation by ultrashort (27-108 fs) laser pulses and calculate the macroscopic response of a collection of atoms to such a short pulse. We show how the harmonic spectrum after propagation through the medium is significantly different from the single-atom spectrum. We use single-atom data calculated by integration of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation and propose a method, based on an adiabatic approximation;:to extract the data necessary to perform a propagation calculation.

  • Spatiotemporal separation of high harmonic radiation into two quantum path components
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 59:2, s. 1367-1373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a spatiotemporal analysis of high harmonic generation, showing evidence for the presence of several quantum path contributions to the atomic dipole moment. We show that the harmonic radiation can largely be described as a sum of two fields having a phase proportional to the intensity of the generating field. We compare our results to recent experimental results demonstrating this separation [M. Bellini et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 297 (1998)]. We show how the temporal and spatial coherence properties are influenced by this effect, and discuss how it could be used to obtain better control of the generated harmonic radiation. • Strong species dependence of high order photoelectron production in alkali metal atoms
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 84:13, s. 2822-2825
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a theoretical and experimental study of the production of very high order photoelectrons from alkali metal atoms interacting with intense, midinfrared radiation. The strength of this process shows an unexpectedly strong species dependence. We find that this dependence can be explained via the difference in the cross section for electron-ion scattering from the different atoms. This allows us to directly relate the high energy portion of the photoelectron spectrum to specific features of the electron-ion potential.

  • Spatial and spectral properties of the high-order harmonic emission in argon for seeding applications
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 79:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We characterize and control the harmonic emission in the spectral and spatial domains in order to define in which conditions the harmonic radiation can be a high-quality seed for soft x-ray and x-ray free-electron lasers. The length of the gas cell, where harmonics are generated, was optimized and the energy per pulse was determined in absolute value with a calibrated x-ray photodiode. The beam spatial profile was measured and, in some conditions, a very collimated beam with a half-angle divergence below 1 mrad could be obtained. We also show that increasing the intensity of the fundamental laser field leads to a considerable broadening of the bandwidth of the harmonic radiation, allowing us to cover a large spectral range. This effect is due to fundamental reshaping leading to an efficient phase matching of both short- and long-trajectory contributions.

  • Attosecond electron wave packet dynamics in strong laser fields
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 95:1, s. 1-013001
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use a train of sub-200 attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses with energies just above the ionization threshold in argon to create a train of temporally localized electron wave packets. We study the energy transfer from a strong infrared (IR) laser field to the ionized electrons as a function of the delay between the XUV and IR fields. When the wave packets are born at the zero crossings of the IR field, a significant amount of energy (similar to 20 eV) is transferred from the field to the electrons. This results in dramatically enhanced above-threshold ionization in conditions where the IR field alone does not induce any significant ionization. Because both the energy and duration of the wave packets can be varied independently of the IR laser, they are valuable tools for studying and controlling strong-field processes.

  • Trains of attosecond electron wave packets
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Modern Optics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0950-0340 .- 1362-3044. ; 53:1-2, s. 233-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study temporally localized electron wave packets, generated using a train of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses to ionize the target atoms. Both the electron wave packets and the attosecond pulse train ( APT) are characterized using the same technique, based on interference of two-photon transitions in the continuum. We study, in particular, the energy transfer from a moderately strong infrared (IR) field to the electron wave packets as a function of time delay between the XUV and the IR fields. The use of an APT to generate the electron wave packets enables the generation at times not accessible through tunneling ionization. We find that a significant amount of energy is transferred from the IR field to the electron wave packets, when they are generated at a zero-crossing of the IR laser field. This energy transfer results in a dramatically enhanced above-threshold ionization even at IR intensities that alone are not strong enough to induce any significant ionization.

  • High-order Harmonics - A Coherent Source In the Xuv Range
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nonlinear Optical Physics & Materials. - 0218-1991. ; 4:3, s. 647-665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review the main results concerning high-order generation processes from the point of view of a potential user of this new source of XUV radiation. The perspectives for optimizing the source, both in efficiency and in spectral range, its characteristics and in particular, its coherence properties, are discussed. Finally, we describe two experiments, which demonstrate the usefulness of the harmonics as a short-pulse, coherent source in the XUV domain.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 83:25, s. 5270-5273
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High harmonic radiation spectra up to 19th order in alkali metal vapors excited by an intense, picosecond mid-infrared (3 -4 mu m) laser are reported and compared to theory. • Experimental studies of attosecond pulse trains
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Laser Physics. - 1054-660X. ; 15:6, s. 888-898
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present experimental measurements of attosecond pulse trains. The characterization of the pulses uses a spectral interferometry technique that is implemented with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. This allows us to manipulate independently the pump and probe pulses for a wide range of applications. By letting the attosecond pulses pass through metallic films, we can in particular compensate for the intrinsic chirp of the attosecond pulses corresponding to the plateau spectral region, thus getting pulses as short as 170 attoseconds-only 1.2 optical cycles at the central frequency. The measurement technique is also applicable for determination of the group delay of thin XUV-transparent films and relative delay in the photoionization process. Our experimental method is applied to attosecond pulse trains created by 35- and 9-fs laser pulses, and the shortest train observed consists of three or four pulses.
