  • The structure-function relationship for alumina supported platinum during the formation of ammonia from nitrogen oxide and hydrogen in the presence of oxygen
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 18:16, s. 10850-10855
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the structure-function relationship of alumina supported platinum during the formation of ammonia from nitrogen oxide and dihydrogen by employing in situ X-ray absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Particular focus has been directed towards the effect of oxygen on the reaction as a model system for emerging technologies for passive selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides. The suppressed formation of ammonia observed as the feed becomes net-oxidizing is accompanied by a considerable increase in the oxidation state of platinum as well as the formation of surface nitrates and the loss of NH-containing surface species. In the presence of (excess) oxygen, the ammonia formation is proposed to be limited by weak interaction between nitrogen oxide and the oxidized platinum surface. This leads to a slow dissociation rate of nitrogen oxide and thus low abundance of the atomic nitrogen surface species that can react with the adsorbed hydrogen species. In this case the consumption of hydrogen through the competing water formation reaction and decomposition/oxidation of ammonia are of less importance for the net ammonia formation.

  • Akademiskt entreprenörskap ger samhällsekonomisk vinst : Entreprenörskap och företagande bland akademiker under perioden 2004–2009
  • 2013

  • Born Globals' foreign market channel strategies
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1479-3059 .- 1479-3067. ; 1:4, s. 356-373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Foreign entry mode choices are decisions of paramount importance for the long-term survival and growth of companies that are in a process of rapid international expansion. In this paper we seek to understand the foreign market channel strategies of Born Globals. We examine whether these companies develop a similar strategy regarding foreign entry mode choices and whether their market channel strategies differ from contemporary theories treating this problem. A comparative case study conducted on four companies meeting the criteria of Born Globals suggests that they do not show a common foreign entry mode. Instead, the companies seem to have very different market channel strategies even if they all have internationalised very rapidly. These findings are discussed against the current range of theoretical models that seek to explain the companies' foreign entry mode choice. We conclude the paper with some implications and suggestions for future research.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Canadian Journal of the Administrative Sciences. - Chichester : John Wiley & Sons. - 0825-0383 .- 1936-4490. ; 21:1, s. 22-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we explore internationalization and export growth over time in a sample of 135 small manufacturing firms. By using concepts and arguments from literature on international business and small firms, the paper identifies six situational, or contingency, factors that are expected to influence the international activities of small firms. Our results show that a dynamic and fast-changing environment may push small firms to go abroad, while it seems to be the experiences built up in the organization and a younger generation of CEOs that can explain why some small firms continue to expand their international activities. The findings suggest that the factors influencing small firms to go abroad and become international differ from the factors that influence them to continue and grow once they are on the international marketplace. The paper ends with a discussion of the findings, together with suggestions for further research.

  • Entrepreneurial Networks in University Spin-offs – An Analysis of the External Entrepreneur Model
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship, People and Organisations. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781783478767 - 9781783478774 ; , s. 136-154
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the study we examine whether external entrepreneurs show differences compared with inventor entrepreneurs in the way they interact and network with others in the start-up process, and – if so – how these differences become manifested in their venturing efforts. The study uses a case study design of four university spin-offs across different industries and development stages originating from a Swedish technical university. In general, our findings emphasize the critical role of incubators for supporting the commercialization and diffusion of technology as they bridge structural holes between research oriented and commercial networks. However, we also find evidence that the external entrepreneur model contains network elements that on the whole makes it more effective in the venturing process. As such, the external entrepreneur model seems to be a highly potent technology transfer mechanism with potential to orchestrate efforts to commercialize public research for the benefit of industry and broader society.

  • Blood in the board room : family relationships influencing the functions of the board
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561. ; :January, Meeting Abstract Supplement, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We develop the concept of family through using insights from evolutionary psychology, stressing genetic kinship, i.e., blood relationships. We apply the family concept on the functional emphasis of family firm’s boards. Testing the hypotheses on a convenient-sample of 68 small and medium sized Swedish family firms, we find indications of blood relationships influencing the functions of the board. We suggest the development of the family conception according to these lines, where blood and the basic characteristics of nepotism are constitutive.

  • Entrepreneurial Acceleration : Exploring Accelerator Programs
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - San Diego : Academy of Management.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent years have seen the emergence of entrepreneurial acceleration as a means for linking innovative start-ups to resources and training. While sharing common characteristics, entrepreneurial acceleration programs differ across and within ecosystems. To address this issue, we inductively looked for differences across programs to find systematic evidence of variations in their overall design and approach to entrepreneurial acceleration. Grounded on the strategic management literature, nine characterizing variables and four major types of acceleration programs were found. The closing section of the paper addresses the implications for future.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Communications biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 5:1, s. 1402-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are mediators of intercellular communication and a promising class of biomarkers. Surface proteins of EVs play decisive roles in establishing a connection with recipient cells, and they are putative targets for diagnostic assays. Analysis of the surface proteins can thus both illuminate the biological functions of EVs and help identify potential biomarkers. We developed a strategy combining high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and  proximity ligation assays (PLA) to first identify and then validate surface proteins discovered on EVs. We applied our workflow to investigate surface proteins of small EVs found in seminal fluid (SF-sEV). We identified 1,014 surface proteins and verified the presence of a subset of these on the surface of SF-sEVs. Our work demonstrates a general strategy for deep analysis of EVs’ surface proteins across patients and pathological conditions, proceeding from unbiased screening by HRMS to ultra-sensitive targeted analyses via PLA.

  • Den nationella svenska rapporten: Akademiker och tillväxt i Sverige
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this report is to identify the role of academics as entrepreneurs. Education and a highly educated staff is a growth factor in companies and in this report we will highlight the characteristics of companies established by academics and which factors are crucial for these companies to grow. A special focus has been whether academics organise their companies in a particular way – a way that we may expect will become more common in our knowledge society. Comparing the three Nordic countries has been challenging. In spite of the differences of size between the three Nordic countries the number of entrepreneurs is remarkably similar, with a slight overweight of entrepreneurs in Norway. In the report we focus on entrepreneurs and growth entrepreneurs with a tertiary education. In Denmark we define tertiary education as a university master degree, based on five years of university study. In Norway we define tertiary education as a master degree or equivalent, based on more than four years of university study. In Sweden we define a tertiary education as three years of university study or more than three years. The university studies vary depending on the study subject. In order to be able to compare the data from the three countries we use the definition four years or more in the chapter comparing data from the three national studies. The statistic data in the report is based on figures on academic entrepreneurs starting their company in 2004 and following the development in the number of entrepreneurs until 2008. Growth entrepreneurs are defined as entrepreneurs starting a company in 2004 and having experienced an average yearly growth of 20 pct in the number of employees from ultimo November until ultimo November 2008.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour & Research. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1355-2554 .- 1758-6534. ; 23:3, s. 381-405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual model that explains how learning processes at the team level connect with individual and organizational levels of learning in technology-based ventures, thereby influencing the evolution of innovation capabilities in the entrepreneurial process.Design/methodology/approachThe 4I organizational learning framework is used as an overarching theoretical structure to acknowledge entrepreneurial learning as a dynamic process that operate on multiple levels in technology-based ventures. Embedded in this logic, research on team learning is integrated into this theorizing to examine how learning processes at the team level bridge and connect with learning processes operating at individual and organizational levels.FindingsThe conceptual model identifies different sets of team learning processes critical for the routinization and evolution of innovation capabilities in technology-based ventures. In this respect, the conceptual model advances the scholarly understanding of entrepreneurial learning as a dynamic process operating across multiple levels in technology-based ventures.Originality/valueBy conceptualizing how individual streams of experiences over time become institutionalized via interaction, conversation and dialogue, the paper provides novel insights into the critical role of team learning for bridging individual and organizational levels of learning in the entrepreneurial learning process.

  • The ethos of sustainable entrepreneurship education : A review and critical analysis
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We employ bibliometric methods to provide insights and quantitative data about academic publications on sustainable entrepreneurship education in field-specific entrepreneurship journals. We identify 147 publications in journals acknowledged as Entrepreneurship and small business management outlets in the Academic Journal Guide (AJG) 2021. The analysis reveals that field-specific entrepreneurship journals play a significant role in driving conversations on sustainable entrepreneurship education. However, there are selective citation practices that concentrate attention on a few high-impact journals. The analysis also identifies four conceptual themes prevalent in the field, focusing on entrepreneurial intention, small business success factors, social entrepreneurship, and institutional aspects of sustainable entrepreneurship education. Additionally, the analysis highlights influential works and research themes within sustainable entrepreneurship education. Overall, our review and analysis emphasize the need for a multidimensional approach that combines bibliometric analysis with qualitative assessments for a comprehensive evaluation of the field.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alumni engagement plays a crucial role in driving innovation in university-based entrepreneurship ecosystems. We employ an inductive, informant-centric research design to explore the processual dynamics surrounding the early alumni engagement of entrepreneurship graduates and how these translate into enterprising behaviors that foster technology transfer and knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship. Our inductive analysis advances the theoretical understanding of the beginning phases of the alumni engagement process among entrepreneurship graduates, the key drivers that make them gravitate toward different forms of alumni engagement, and the role and impact of their engagement in the surrounding ecosystem. © 2022 The Author(s). • Noncontractual Governance Strategies of Business Angels in the Post-Investment Venture Relationship
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Business angels fulfil an important economic role in society by getting involved in early-stage ventures. This dissertation aspires to advance our knowledge of the governance strategies used by business angels in the venture relationship, based on the idea that the choice of governance strategies depends on the individual venture but is also shaped by the strategies adopted by any business angel network (BAN) the business angel is part of.Major findings are twofold. First, the analysis suggests that governance strategies are role-contingent. The role of the business angel vis-a-vis the venture changes, typically from outsider to insider, as the relationship transitions through different stages. Business angels should only use governance strategies that are perceived as legitimate for their role. Moreover, all strategies do not mix well and some may even neutralize each other when used together. The impact of the BAN on the action of the individual business angel is not straightforward: the formalization of a BAN will certainly restrict individual action, but, on the other hand, it seems that the BAN can also be useful for managing conflicts.Second, results indicate that conceptualizing the long-term dynamic of the investor-venture relationship in terms of any single theoretical perspective, be it agency theory, procedural justice, or norm-based influence, is too simplistic. The utility of each theoretical perspective is role-contingent: a business angel in the outsider role is better understood with agency theory, whereas a business angel in the insider role is better understood with norm-based influence theory. The empirical data on individual business angels comes mainly from 30 interviews with 21 business angels, and some supplementary data. The analysis of BANs is made differently and based on a different data set consisting of approximately 150 interviews with BAN members, civil servants, politicians, banks, accountants, and entrepreneurs.

In this paper, weapproach the critical question of how firms can successfully renew theirbusiness models over time. The aim is to identify the main sequences of eventsthat precede business model innovation and which trigger evolutionary changesin how a firm develops and capture value. Theoretically, we approach businessmodel innovation as an evolutionary phenomenon by emphasizing the dynamic andpath dependent aspects of strategic change processes. Empirically, we employ ahistorical case study where we make an in-depth analysis of a firm in theprocess industry that has managed to innovate its business model several timessince its inception. • History and geography matter : The cultural dimension of entrepreneurship
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation deals with the rise of new industries through entrepreneurial activities. The aim is to investigate how differences in contexts might encourage or discourage entrepreneurial activities. This contextualization of entrepreneurship enhanced our understanding of when, how and why entrepreneurial activities happen.Entrepreneurship is recognized to be a spatially uneven process and, in addition to previous research that has examined the actions of individual entrepreneurs, we also need to understand the context in which entrepreneurship occurs. We have a good understanding of how structural conditions like industry structure, organization structure and agglomeration effects influence the context, but we know little about how the social dimension of the context is the transmitting medium between structural conditions for entrepreneurship and the decision to act upon identified entrepreneurial opportunities. Following this line of argument, this dissertation is built on the assumption that entrepreneurship is a social phenomenon which gives strong arguments for including local culture in entrepreneurship research. The temporal persistence and the pronounced differences of culture and structural conditions between places reflect path-dependent processes. I therefore use regional path dependence as an interpretative lens to study the contextualization of entrepreneurship in two Swedish cities.Although each context is unique, some generalizations can be drawn from the four individual papers in this dissertation. The first is that industrial legacy leads to the formation of a distinct local culture and that the persistency of this culture influences the subsequent entrepreneurial activities in new local industries. The second is that this persistency of culture suggests that entrepreneurs who are outsiders, geographically or socially, are the driving forces for the emergence of new local industries. Finally, new industry emergence is a result of a combination of exogenous forces and initial local conditions, but it is the entrepreneurial individuals who translate these forces and conditions into entrepreneurial activities.

  • Been there, done that : exploring the influence of industry and functional work experience on opportunity recognition
  • 2006
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recognition of new venture opportunities has been acknowledged as one of the most important abilities of successful entrepreneurs. Explaining the recognition of new venture opportunities has thus become an important element of the scholarly study of entrepreneurship. Building on this stream of research, we present a study of the influence of prior industry and functional work experience on entrepreneurs’ ability to recognize new venture opportunities. As a theoretical point of departure we acknowledge two alternative lines of reasoning in the literature as explanations of opportunity recognition; the expert thesis and the intersectional thesis. Statistical analysis is made on a sample of 291 Swedish individuals with recent experience of starting up a new venture. In all, the overall results give ample support for the intersectional thesis. The findings suggest that entrepreneurs with experience across different industries and work functions have an enhanced ability to recognize new venture opportunities. On the other hand, we do not find any support for the expert thesis. The findings show no association between deeper experience within a particular industry or work function and generating more new venture opportunities. In addition, a more fine grained analysis of the type of business opportunity recognized reveal supporting evidence that experience across functional areas is positively associated with more innovative business opportunities.

  • Boards and governance in SMEs: An inquiry into boards’ contribution to firm performance
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The board of directors is often described as a valuable resource for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that can contribute to the direction and performance of the firm. Mainstream research and literature on boards and governance has however mainly been concerned with how the board of directors best can monitor and restrain managerial action in large widely held corporations, and there is not much guidance for individuals interested in how boards can be effective instruments of governance in privately held SMEs. The main focus in research on boards and governance has moreover been on the direct relationship between observable board characteristics and the financial performance of the firm. How contingencies and stakeholder influences, and how the working style in the boardroom influence a board’s ability to contribute to firm performance in SMEs are hence largely unexplored issues, and few attempts have been made to integrate various streams of research in empirical research on boards and governance in SMEs. Based on this background is the overall purpose of this composite dissertation to apply and empirically test an integrated theoretical framework that explains boards’ contribution to firm performance in SMEs. The theoretical framework is developed by a review and analysis of relevant research and literature on boards and governance. The empirical part of the dissertation consists of four individual papers, and each empirical paper addresses a distinct research objective in order to deal with the theoretical problem and meet the overall purpose of the dissertation. The main contribution of the dissertation is that it identifies, develops and empirically tests concepts related to contingencies, stakeholder influences and the working style in the boardroom to better understand what might enable (or hinder) boards to perform their tasks and contribute to firm performance in SMEs. The overall findings in the four empirical studies suggest that the extent to which the board of directors in SMEs provide the firm with differential benefits and contribute to firm performance is not as simple and direct as many past studies assume. There consequently seem to be a need to go beyond the assumptions of simple and direct relationships between observable board characteristics and firm performance to better understand how boards contribute to the direction and performance of an enterprise, and future research should continue to develop theory of how contingencies, stakeholder influences and the working style in the boardroom can moderate the potential value-adding effect of a board of directors in SMEs.

  • Boards of directors and entrepreneurial posture in medium-size companies: Putting the board demography approach to a test
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Small Business Journal. - London : SAGE Publications. - 1741-2870 .- 0266-2426. ; 25:6, s. 511-537
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A growing body of research suggests that a strong and vigilant board can have a significant influence on the value-creating potential of medium-size companies by favouring change and innovation in strategic decision-making. Yet how best to conceptualize this relationship remains controversial in scholarly circles. The mainstream approach has been to argue for a direct relationship between board demography and company performance. In opposition stands a small but growing number of scholars who argue for a “behavioural approach” where boards’ ability to perform board tasks effectively – their actual behaviour – should be taken into account. Empirical studies comparing the two approaches are however surprisingly scarce. Based on this observation, the aim of the study is to test the mainstream board demography approach by examining the influence of boards of directors on CEOs’ commitment to take an entrepreneurial posture (EP). Both demographic and behavioural board measures are included in the model. Statistical analysis on a sample of 175 medium-size companies in the manufacturing sector gives ample support for the behavioural approach. The behavioural board measure – boards’ actual involvement in decision control – shows a positive and significant relationship with EP. On the other hand, neither board size nor the representation of non-executive directors, both commonly used measures in the demography approach, shows any significant association with EP. The study ends with a discussion of the results and presents suggestions for further research.

  • Boards of directors in small and medium-sized industrial firms : examining the effects of the board's working style on board task performance
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114. ; 12:4, s. 311-330
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increased attention towards the role of the board makes demands on reforms in the boardroom. In many countries, even small and medium-sized firms are experiencing the challenges of creating well functioning boards. In this paper the authors examine the importance of structures and processes in the boardroom of 302 small and medium-sized industrial firms in Sweden. The contribution of the paper is not only that it tries to explore the relationship between processes in the board and board performance, but also that it pays attention to the working structures that exist to maximize the board's task performance. In this study board task performance is measured as the performance of various control and service roles. There are two main findings. (1) The board members' involvement, and (2) the board's formal structures are important for the board's ability to perform its tasks effectively. The findings empirically support the arguments about the importance of a good and clearly defined working style in the board.

  • Business Simulation Exercises in Small Business Management Education : Using Principles and Ideas from Action Learning
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Action Learning. - Abingdon, Oxon, UK : Carfax Publishing. - 1476-7333 .- 1476-7341. ; 7:1, s. 3-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent calls to close the rigour-relevance gap in business school education have suggested incorporating principles and ideas from action learning in small business management education. In this paper we discuss how business simulation exercises can be used as a platform to trigger students' learning by providing them with a platform where they can merge theory with practice. We provide theoretical arguments accompanied by illustrations to show how such initiatives can create a more student-centred teaching structure than what is usually practised in contemporary business school education. This may in turn work as a potential bridge between the safe harbour of traditional classroom teaching and the more chaotic and complex world of managerial practice.

  • Career motives and entrepreneurial decision-making: examining preferences for causal and effectual logics in the early stage of new ventures
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - Dordrecht : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 36:3, s. 281-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of entrepreneurs' career motives is examined on two alternative modes of decision-making logic; causation and effectuation. Based on Sarasvathy's (Acad Manage Rev 26(2):243-288, 2001) seminal study, causation is defined as a decision-making process that focuses on what ought to be done given predetermined goals and possible means, and effectuation as a decision-making process emphasizing the question of what can be done given possible means and imagined ends. Analysis suggests that entrepreneurs who identify themselves with linear or expert career motives have a higher preference for causal decision-making logic. Entrepreneurs who identify themselves with spiral or transitory career motives have a higher preference for effectual decision-making logic. In addition, indications that prior start-up experience moderates the relationship between career motives and effectual decision-making logic for spiral-minded entrepreneurs is found. The overall results give ample support for the assumption that entrepreneurs' career motives influence their decision-making.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been a significant rise in the number of patents originating from academic environments. However, current conceptualizations of academic patents provide a largely homogenous approach to define this entrepreneurial form of technology transfer. In this study we develop a novel categorization framework that identifies three subsets of academic patents which are conceptually distinct from each other. By applying the categorization framework on a unique database of Swedish patents we furthermore find support for its usefulness in detecting underlying differences in technology, opportunity, and commercialization characteristics among the three subsets of academic patents.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we present an overview of empirical research on boards and governance in leading U.S. and international academic journals in general management. Samples, methods, theories, and main concepts are presented and compared. The contributions are positioned with respect to contingency perspectives, behavioral perspectives, and evolutionary perspectives. Through an analysis of 127 empirical articles, we find that most studies on boards and governance have been influenced by a research tradition that treats the board of directors as an isolated “black box.” Only few studies explore boards in context or explore behavioral perspectives of boards. Almost no studies include evolutionary perspectives. Based on our analysis, we explore alternative research streams and outline various directions for future research.
