  • Contemporary Encounters in Gender and Religion : European Perspectives
  • 2016
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fields of gender and religious studies have often been criticized for neglecting to engage with one another, and this volume responds to this dearth of interaction by placing the fields in an intimate dialogue. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach and drawing on feminist scholarship, the book undertakes theoretical and empirical explorations of relational and co-constitutive encounters of gender and religion. Through varied perspectives, the chapters address three interrelated themes: religion as practice, the relationship between religious practice and religion as prescribed by formal religious institutions, and the feminization of religion in Europe.

  • Resisting feminised precarity : Farm workers in post-strike Western Cape, South Africa
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation seeks to contribute to the body of research on gender, neoliberal globalisation and work, and on the forms of resistance people engage in within a deeply unequal global order. It was devised in relation to developments during and after widespread, unprecedented labour and social protests among farm workers in export-oriented agriculture in the Western Cape, South Africa, 2012–2013. The protests, referred to in popular discourse as the ‘farm worker strike’, are widely held to have been spearheaded by people in the most precarious positions: seasonal workers, including migrants both from within and outside South Africa, many of whom were women. The dissertation draws on multi-sited ethnography conducted among farm workers in several of the areas to which the protests spread, during what I refer to as the post-strike moment. The aim of the study is to contribute to an understanding of differently positioned farm workers’ experiences of work and life precarity, organising and resistance – as well as to the interlinkages between these phenomena. Using intersectionality as an ‘analytic sensibility’, the dissertation explores how power relations linked to gender, race/ethnicity and nationality/migration status may be understood as shaped by, and contributing to shaping, work and life precarity. It also looks at how these hierarchies are articulated through labour regimes on farms and through workers’ resistance. Moreover, it interrogates labour activism as a route to resisting not only socio-economic deprivation and apartheid legacies, but further to restoring a sense of dignity (of labour). The dissertation engages with various broader theoretical discussions. It deliberates on the overlaps between the notions of feminisation of labour, precarious work and precarity – conceiving of precarity as a feminised phenomenon. Experiences of precarity in the Western Cape farmlands, it suggests, are shaped by the devaluing of some workers, linked to racism, sexism and global inequalities, as well as to historical and contemporary processes of dispossession. The dissertation also describes how (some) female farm workers, through presenting themselves as knowledgeable about their rights, and through accentuating feminised aspects of care and responsibility in their activism, position themselves as respectable. Furthermore, through identifying silences and exclusions in representations of farm workers, it contributes to writing black/African female migrant workers back into the strike narrative as important and militant actors. Finally, the dissertation argues that attention to multiple forms of violence – slow, structural, symbolic and direct – and the violence of globalisation under neoliberalism is crucial in order to understand the messy and violent aspects of the ‘farm worker strike’. Importantly, it explores these topics as informed by broader global developments, through which power, control and the retention of value are increasingly placed outside of the deeply unequal spaces that constitute commercial farming areas, discussing links with Sweden as a destination for South African wine and deciduous fruit.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Maeve Hickey here explores the powerful interaction of people and place at the core of pilgrimage. In the Marian sites at Knock and Lourdes and in Padre Poi's San Giovanni, the sacred personages overpower the natural landscape, and church institutions produce a steady stream of religious objects: exportable versions of the pilgrimage experience. The photographs reveal the importance of pilgrimage to nationalism from Ireland's association with the mountain on which its patron saint, Patrick, spent a Mosaic month battling evil to what we might call the local nationalisms' of Maltese towns people with their joyful devotion to their own saint. The images also reveal the often gendered character of pilgrimages, whether in the preponderance of women and their particular quests in some of the international pilgrimages, or in the intensely performed masculinities of Croagh Patrick mountaineers and white-robed carriers of the Maltese saints.

  • Contemporary Encounters in Gender and Religion : Introduction
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Contemporary Encounters in Gender and Religion. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319425979 - 9783319425986 ; , s. 1-28
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The introduction points out how until recently the relationship between feminist studies and studies of religion has been marked by mutual blindness. In the present moment of encounter between the fields, the veiled Muslim woman is at the center of attention. In critical response to the view of “the religious woman” as the epitome of female submission, feminist theorists argue that new approaches to agency, power and resistance are needed. The authors of this introduction show, however, that these debates are not new in the study of gender and religion, and point to significant continuities in feminist theorizing. The volume engages with the post-secular turn by opening the door to gendered religious and spiritual worlds in present-day Europe. Furthermore, the continuing relevance of concepts such as religion as practice and the feminization of religion in Europe are stressed.

  • Feminine Matters. Women’s Religious Practices in a Portuguese Town.
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book explores the religious lives of Catholic women in Vila Branca (a pseudonym), a small town on the north coast of Portugal. The study deals with various facets of Catholic religious life, such as the cult of the saints and the Virgin Mary; death-related practices; the material culture of Catholicism; pilgrimage journeys; and the ambiguous relationship between women and priests. The author argues that in order to understand the processes that underlie these religious phenomena, it is crucial to understand the actual role of women.

  • In Nature’s Cathedral : Caminoization and Cultural Critique in Swedish Pilgrim Spirituality
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Numen. - : Brill. - 0029-5973 .- 1568-5276. ; 67:5-6, s. 483-507
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two parallel, interrelated waves of interest in pilgrimage on foot has surged in Sweden since the 1990s: participation in the international Camino pilgrimage and a vernacular pilgrimage movement in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden. In this article, the interconnections between the two strands are explored. In both settings, attention is paid primarily to walking itself, illustrating a key facet of Caminoization: the stress on the journey rather than the destination. It is argued here that the pilgrimage walks in the Church of Sweden are modeled on a Caminoized notion of pilgrimage, built into the Swedish word pilgrimsvandring. This notion of pilgrimage functions as an open category that can connect to both religious heritages and social and cultural trends in new ways. A key outcome of the spread of Caminoized pilgrimage is the rise of a pilgrim spirituality that celebrates simplicity and communing with nature, and carries with it a cultural critique of postindustrial society, further accentuated in the pilgrimage movement’s recent turn to ecology and climate action.

  • La femminilizzazione della guarigione nel pellegrinaggio a Fátima
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Annali di Studi Religiosi. - 1592-5927. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the meanings ascribed to the pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Fátima by mainly female Portuguese pilgrims. The article builds on ethnographic fieldwork in Vila Branca, a small pseudonymous town on the northwestern coast of Portugal. The author shows how women’s interpretation of the Fátima shrine is deeply embedded in local forms of Marian devotion, in particular the practice of making vows to Mary. It is argued that the vow can be understood as a healing ritual (carried out by both women and men) and that the predominance of female pilgrims at Fátima mirrors their responsibilities as mothers and housewives to secure the health and well-being of others. The article describes a typical, popular pilgrimage journey from Vila Branca to Fátima, undertaken by bus in a large group. The journey includes various elements of the typical Portuguese festa, as well as the ritual reenactment of Mary’s apparition in a farewell ceremony manifesting the materiality and visual aspects of popular religious experience. Furthermore, the author discusses the various tensions between orthodox and popular interpretations of Fátima, one of which centers around the belief in the materialization of divine power in the form of an ordinary woman.
