  • Injection-Free and Cavity Free Parametric Sources for Future Spaceborne DIAL Based on Periodically Poled Nonlinear Materials
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Springer Aerospace Technology. - : Springer Nature. ; , s. 363-371
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We present new parametric source architectures for future spaceborne Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL). This work focalizes on the developments performed during LEMON H2020 project using periodically poled nonlinear crystals. Such phase matching configuration offers the possibility to go towards more simple and robust set-ups for future space operation. We investigated injection-free optical parametric oscillator OPO set-ups, such as the Nested Cavity OPO–which allows a broad tuning range and thus can address several gas species with a single OPO—and also propose an injection and cavity free OPO solution using the counter-propagating phase matching configuration (Backward wave OPO). Moreover, we studied the implementation of high efficiency optical parametric amplifiers, to investigate the possibility to scale the output energies to several tens of mJ in the 2 µm region, and performed radiation testing on the specifically developed, large aperture, periodically poled KTP crystals.

  • Highly efficient, high average power, narrowband, pump-tunable BWOPO
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Optics Letters. - : Optica Publishing Group. - 0146-9592 .- 1539-4794. ; 48:24, s. 6484-6487
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate a continuously tunable mid-infrared source that produces narrowband radiation at 1981 nm and 2145 nm based on a tunable Yb-based hybrid MOPA pump and a backward-wave optical parametric oscillator (BWOPO). The BWOPO employs a PPRKTP crystal with 580 nm domain periodicity. The BWOPO has a record-low oscillation threshold of 19.2 MW/cm2 and generates mJ level output with an overall efficiency exceeding 70%, reaching an average power of 5.65W at the repetition rate of 5 kHz. The system is mechanically robust and optical cavity-free, making it suitable for spectroscopic systems on mobile platforms. The mid-infrared signal frequency is tuned by pump tuning with a linear pump-to-signal frequency translation rate close to the predicted 1 to 1.001 Hz/Hz.

  • Importance of electronic correlations for structural and magnetic properties of the iron pnictide superconductor LaFeAsO
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 84:5, s. 054529-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present calculations of structural and magnetic properties of the iron-pnictide superconductor LaFeAsO including electron-electron correlations. For this purpose we apply a fully charge self-consistent combination of density-functional theory with the dynamical mean-field theory, allowing for the calculation of total energies. We find that the inclusion of correlation effects gives a good agreement of the arsenic z position with experimental data even in the paramagnetic (high-temperature) phase. Going to low temperatures, we study the formation of the ordered moment in the striped spin-density-wave phase, yielding an ordered moment of about 0.60 mu(B), again in good agreement with experiments. This shows that the inclusion of correlation effects improves both structural and magnetic properties of LaFeAsO at the same time.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2) contains, beyond the astrometry, three-band photometry for 1.38 billion sources. One band is the G band, the other two were obtained by integrating the Gaia prism spectra (BP and RP). We have used these three broad photometric bands to infer stellar effective temperatures, T-eff, for all sources brighter than G = 17 mag with T-eff in the range 3000-10 000K (some 161 million sources). Using in addition the parallaxes, we infer the line-of-sight extinction, A(G), and the reddening, E(BP-RP), for 88 million sources. Together with a bolometric correction we derive luminosity and radius for 77 million sources. These quantities as well as their estimated uncertainties are part of Gaia DR2. Here we describe the procedures by which these quantities were obtained, including the underlying assumptions, comparison with literature estimates, and the limitations of our results. Typical accuracies are of order 324K (T-eff), 0.46 mag (A(G)), 0.23 mag (E(BP-RP)), 15% (luminosity), and 10% (radius). Being based on only a small number of observable quantities and limited training data, our results are necessarily subject to some extreme assumptions that can lead to strong systematics in some cases (not included in the aforementioned accuracy estimates). One aspect is the non-negativity contraint of our estimates, in particular extinction, which we discuss. Yet in several regions of parameter space our results show very good performance, for example for red clump stars and solar analogues. Large uncertainties render the extinctions less useful at the individual star level, but they show good performance for ensemble estimates. We identify regimes in which our parameters should and should not be used and we define a "clean" sample. Despite the limitations, this is the largest catalogue of uniformly-inferred stellar parameters to date. More precise and detailed astrophysical parameters based on the full BP/RP spectrophotometry are planned as part of the third Gaia data release.

  • Strongly Correlated Materials from a Numerical Renormalization Group Perspective : How the Fermi-Liquid State of Sr2RuO4 Emerges
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - New York : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 124:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The crossover from fluctuating atomic constituents to a collective state as one lowers temperature or energy is at the heart of the dynamical mean-field theory description of the solid state. We demonstrate that the numerical renormalization group is a viable tool to monitor this crossover in a real-materials setting. The renormalization group flow from high to arbitrarily small energy scales clearly reveals the emergence of the Fermi-liquid state of Sr2RuO4. We find a two-stage screening process, where orbital fluctuations are screened at much higher energies than spin fluctuations, and Fermi-liquid behavior, concomitant with spin coherence, below a temperature of 25 K. By computing real-frequency correlation functions, we directly observe this spin-orbital scale separation and show that the van Hove singularity drives strong orbital differentiation. We extract quasiparticle interaction parameters from the low-energy spectrum and find an effective attraction in the spin-triplet sector.

  • Interorbital singlet pairing in Sr2RuO4 : A Hund's superconductor
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 105:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the superconducting gap function of Sr2RuO4. By solving the linearized Eliashberg equation with a correlated pairing vertex extracted from a dynamical mean-field calculation we identify the dominant pairing channels. An analysis of the candidate gap functions in orbital and quasiparticle band basis reveals that an interorbital singlet pairing of even parity is in agreement with experimental observations. It reconciles in particular the occurrence of a two-component order parameter with the presence of line nodes of quasiparticles along the c axis in the superconducting phase. The strong angular dependence of the gap along the Fermi surface is in stark contrast to its quasilocality when expressed in the orbital basis. We identify local interorbital spin correlations as the driving force for the pairing and thus reveal the continuation of Hund's physics into the superconducting phase.

  • Heavy-fermion quantum criticality and destruction of the Kondo effect in a nickel oxypnictide
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nature Materials. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1476-1122 .- 1476-4660. ; 13:8, s. 777-781
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A quantum critical point arises at a continuous transformation between distinct phases of matter at zero temperature. Studies in antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion materials have revealed that quantum criticality has several classes, with an unconventional type that involves a critical destruction of the Kondo entanglement(1,2). To understand such varieties, it is important to extend the materials basis beyond the usual setting of intermetallic compounds. Here we show that a nickel oxypnictide, CeNiAsO, exhibits a heavy-fermion antiferromagnetic quantum critical point as a function of either pressure or P/As substitution. At the quantum critical point, non-Fermi-liquid behaviour appears, which is accompanied by a divergent effective carrier mass. Across the quantum critical point, the low-temperature Hall coefficient undergoes a rapid sign change, suggesting a sudden jump of the Fermi surface and a destruction of the Kondo effect(3,4). Our results imply that the enormous materials basis for the oxypnictides, which has been so crucial in the search for high-temperature superconductivity, will also play a vital role in the effort to establish the universality classes of quantum criticality in strongly correlated electron systems.

  • Pump Tunable Mirrorless OPO : an Innovative Concept for Future Space IPDA Emitters
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Space Optics, ICSO 2022. - : SPIE-Intl Soc Optical Eng.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A highly efficient mirrorless OPO tunable in the mid-infrared around 2 μm has been developed and characterized in an original pumping configuration comprising a tunable high power hybrid Ytterbium laser MOPA (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier) in the nanosecond regime. The hybrid pump laser is based on a fiber laser seeder continuously tunable over several GHz at 1030 nm, which is shaped in the time domain with acousto-optic modulators (AOM), and power amplified in a dual stage Ytterbium doped fiber amplifiers, followed by two Yb:YAG bulk amplifiers. The pump delivers up to 3.5 mJ of energy within narrowband 15 ns pulses with a 5 kHz repetition rate. The output was focused into Periodically Poled KTP (PPKTP) crystals with a quasi-Phase Matching (QPM) period of 580 nm, producing Backward Optical Parametric Oscillation (BWOPO), with a forward signal wave at 1981 nm and a backward traveling idler at 2145 nm. We report significant optical to optical efficiencies exceeding 70 % depending on crystal length and input power. As theoretically expected, the forward wave could be continuously tuned over 10 GHz following the pump frequency sweep, while the backward wave remains almost stable, both being free from mode hops. These properties obtained from an optical arrangement without free-space cavities are attractive for future space Integrated Path Differential Absorption (IPDA) Lidar applications, which require robust and efficient tunable frequency converters in the mid-infrared.

  • Renormalization of effective interactions in a negative charge transfer insulator
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9950. ; 96:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compute from first principles the effective interaction parameters appropriate for a low-energy description of the rare-earth nickelate LuNiO3 involving the partially occupied eg states only. The calculation uses the constrained random-phase approximation and reveals that the effective on-site Coulomb repulsion is strongly reduced by screening effects involving the oxygen-p and nickel-t2g states. The long-range component of the effective low-energy interaction is also found to be sizable. As a result, the effective on-site interaction between parallel-spin electrons is reduced down to a small negative value. This validates effective low-energy theories of these materials that were proposed earlier. Electronic structure methods combined with dynamical mean-field theory are used to construct and solve an appropriate low-energy model and explore its phase diagram as a function of the on-site repulsion and Hund's coupling. For the calculated values of these effective interactions, we find that in agreement with experiments, LuNiO3 is a metal without disproportionation of the eg occupancy when considered in its orthorhombic structure, while the monoclinic phase is a disproportionated insulator.

  • Magnetic response of Sr2RuO4 : quasi-local spin fluctuations due to Hund’s coupling
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - New York : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 100:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the magnetic susceptibility in the normal state of Sr2RuO4 using dynamical mean-field theory including dynamical vertex corrections. Besides the well known incommensurate response, our calculations yield quasi-local spin fluctuations which are broad in momentum and centered around the Gamma-point, in agreement with recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments [Steffens et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 047004 (2019)]. We show that these quasi-local fluctuations are controlled by the Hund’s coupling and account for the dominant contribution to the momentum-integrated response. While all orbitals contribute equally to the incommensurate response, the enhanced Gamma-point response originates from the planar xy orbital.
