  • Artificial Intelligence Agents and Knowledge Acquisition in Health Information System
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: MCIS 2022 Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research work highlights the need for AI-powered applications and their usages for the optimization of information flow processes in the medical sector, from the perspective of how AI-agents can impact human-machine interaction (HCI) for acquiring relevant and necessary information in emergency department (ED). This study investigates how AI-agents can be applied to manage situations of patient related unexpected experiences, such as long waiting times, overcrowding issues, and high number of patients leaving without being diagnosed. For knowledge acquisition, we incorporated modelling workshop techniques for gathering domain information from the domain experts in the context of emergency department in Karolinska Hospital, Solna, Stockholm, Sweden, and for designing the AI-agent utilizing NLP techniques. We discuss how the proposed solution can be used as an assistant to healthcare practitioners and workers to improve medical assistance in various medical procedures to increase flow and to reduce workloads and anxiety levels. The implementation part of this work is based on the natural language processing (NLP) techniques that help to develop the intelligent behavior for information acquisition and its retrieval in a natural way to support patients/relatives’ communication with the healthcare organization efficiently and in a natural way.

  • Conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Healthcare Industry
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: MCIS and MENACIS 2023: The 15Th Mediterranean Conference On Information Systems And The 6Th Middle East & North Africa Conference On Digital Information Systems.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study presents an innovative approach to incorporating AI-driven conversational agents (CAs) or social robots technologies into healthcare information systems (HISs) and revolutionizing healthcare delivery systems. The study aims to improve accessibility and personalization, and minimize adverse risks, especially in the emergency departments (EDs). The study investigates patient-related experiences, long waiting times, and overcrowding issues during peak hours in EDs. Design science research methodology (DSRM) principles were tailored with modelling workshop method to capture domain contextual knowledge and include practitioners' cognitive-tacit knowledge-ability into HIS to address the above-mentioned issues. The developed social robot artifact incorporates an artificial intelligence markup language (AIML) technique as a model to restore domain knowledge of EDs, which serves as a foundation for developing goal-oriented interactive conversational system artifact between humans and machines. As a result, the study contributes that CAs, considered value-added AI-driven applications such as CAs or social robots, serve as a coworker to facilitate healthcare practitioners and patients, catering to patients' needs and communication to enhance care delivery experience and improve information flow processes using interactive services within EDs. The research presents a promising solution to improve patient outcomes, reduce waiting times, and enhance communication between patients and practitioners in EDs.

  • The Utilization of Artificial Intelligence for Developing Autonomous Social Robots within Health Information Systems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: CEUR Workshop Proceedings. - : CEUR-WS. ; , s. 34-50
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on using AI systems, specifically conversational agents (CAs), to improve information flow during peak hours in healthcare emergency departments (EDs). We customized a Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining CRISP-DM approach to a CRISP-Knowledge graph (CRISP-KG) for overall design research. We use a knowledge graph approach to create an intelligent knowledge base (KBs) for CAs, which can enhance their reasoning, knowledge management, and context awareness abilities. We employ a collaborative methodology and ontology design patterns to develop a formal ontological model. Our goal is to build intelligent KBs for CAs that can interact with end-users and improve care quality in EDs, using Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) for inference. The KG approach can assist healthcare practitioners and patients in managing information flow more efficiently in EDs, ultimately improving care outcomes. © 2023 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

  • Value Added Conversational AI and Digital Health : An Ontology-Driven Approach
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 57th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Honolulu : University of Hawai'i at Manoa. - 9780998133171 ; , s. 4010-4019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AI-based assistants, such as conversational agents (CAs) and social robots, are becoming increasingly important in healthcare organizations. CAs provide a scalable and cost-effective platform for organizations supporting their employees by retrieving, structuring, and analyzing information to assist work processes. This study targets how knowledge graphs as ontological models manage CA that help improve the patient flow processes and reduce patients’ waiting time in the emergency departments (EDs). We tailored the design thinking (DT) method with modelling workshops employing conceptual modelling (CM) techniques to address these issues. We incorporated a hybrid formal approach of Methontology and Tove methodologies to build design artifacts, develop a goal-oriented interactive conversational system between humans and machines, and support information systems (IS). As a result, this ontology-driven approach contribution helps developers build value-added CAs to facilitate healthcare practitioners and patients. It is helpful for quality care delivery experience and improves bottlenecks in information flow within Eds.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Designing Digitalization (ISD2018 Proceedings). - Lund. - 9789177538769 ; , s. 607-621
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper emphasizes various knowledge acquisition approaches in terms of tacit and explicit knowledge management that can be helpful to capture, codify and communicate within medical unit. The semantic-based knowledge management system (SKMS) supports knowledge acquisition and incorporates various approaches to provide systematic practical platform to knowledge practitioners and to identify various roles of healthcare professionals, tasks that can be performed according to personnel’s competencies, and activities that are carried out as a part of tasks to achieve defined goals of clinical process. This research outcome gives new vision to IT practitioners to manage the tacit and implicit knowledge in XML format which can be taken as foundation for the development of information systems (IS) so that domain end-users can receive timely healthcare related services according to their demands and needs.

  • Blockchain in the Middle East : Challenges and Opportunities
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: MCIS 2019 Proceedings. - Naples : Association for Information Systems.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Blockchain technology has attracted a huge attention from both industry and academia. Despite the fact that there are great potentials of the blockchain, it is facing a number of technical challenges and social challenges. There is a substantial body of literature on the technical challenges and a limited number of researches that addressed the social challenges and opportunities of blockchain. Drawing on a multiple case study of twenty-one firms from six different Middle Eastern countries we synthesize the blockchain technology and IT in the Middle East literature to understand the challenges and opportunities of that technology in the Middle East. Our study identifies a classification of challenges and opportunities: Fine-tune challenges, estrangement challenges, sprint opportunities and act on opportunities and four associated factors: regulation, education, collaboration and culture. In doing this, our research extends and complements existing blockchain research and contributes to the IT literature in the Middle East.

    • Service providers are increasingly depending and using digital infrastructure and tools provided by digital platforms to transform their services and develop digital ones that meet the needs of heterogeneous end users. However, while there is an emerging literature of developing digital services, little is known about the dynamics of transformation. Using multiple cases of firms that develop digital services, the digital service taxonomy was synthesized to understand the dynamics of transformation in developing digital services. This study identifies five main dynamics: the services experience, the service process, the service capabilities, the service environment and the service delivery.  Each of those dynamics and their associated factors are explored under the objectives of business, interaction and technology. This enables us to extend the existing literature on digital service development in particular and contributes to the research of digital innovation in general. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

  • Governing third-party development through platform boundary resources
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ICIS 2010 Proceedings. - AIS : AIS Electronic Library (AISeL). ; , s. 1-18
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Third-party development is increasingly relevant for software platform owners seeking to generatecomplementary assets in the form of applications. The governance of such development involvestwo seemingly conflicting goals: the maintenance of platform control and the transfer of designcapability to users. A key element in simultaneously accommodating these goals is platformboundary resources. However, so far, there is a dearth of theoretical accounts of the role ofboundary resources and the process by which such resources can be used to govern third-partydevelopment. Drawing on case study research of Apple’s iPhone developer program, wesynthesize boundary objects theory and innovation networks literature to develop a processperspective of third-party development governance through boundary resources. In doing this, ourresearch extends and complements existing governance literature and contributes new knowledgeabout an alternative form of system development.

    • The discussion of the core identity of IS research is dominated by a heated controversy between the narrow and the broad views. The paper reviews different perspectives of the core identity of IS and stand in with the broad view. We argued that the constant changes and developments of IT capabilities dynamically drive the corefocus of IS research and thus a broader view should be adopted. The paper presents the recent changes and developments of IT in the social computing era where we have shown how recent developments have widened the scope of IS research by involving mutliple social aspects of investigation. We concluded the paper by proposing some properties of IS research in this era.

  • Strategizing in Digital Application Marketplaces
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ACIS 2018 Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital application marketplaces have become an important strategizing device for many product developing firms. However, creating and sustaining digital application marketplaces are challenging tasks and only little empirical evidence exists about the role and nature of strategy for these marketplaces and how such strategizing actually unfolds in practice. Drawing on a case study of Apple’s App Store, we applied a strategy-as-process perspective to investigate the role of a digital application marketplace in the development of a digital platform. Our analysis identifies and describes three different strategies in the App Store case: monetizing, governing and enhancing, and demonstrates how they were enacted proactively or reactively to support the development of the platform.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Networking and Virtual Organisations. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1470-9503 .- 1741-5225. ; 9:2, s. 140-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Firms seeking to satisfy customer needs should not only rely oninternal but also external sources of innovations for the development of theirproducts and services. Consequently, they need to shift their centralisedbusiness approaches by adopting the paradigm of open innovation and theconcept of platforms to harness the value of innovation networks. The aim ofthis paper is to examine the nature of platforms and how their adoption canstimulate external contributions of third-party developers. Based on the analysiswhich illustrated three platform adoption examples from Apple, Facebook andTwitter it is found that a platform approach and its four main elements(components, knowledge, processes and people) affect the entire innovationnetwork and its two dimension of translations. It is also found that each of thethree firms applied its own particular strategy while adopting the four mainplatform elements to suit its own innovation networks.

    • Firms that identify themselves as innovative have toconstantly and continuously generate a stream ofvalue-rich products and services, and improve them by time targeting growth markets and finding new ones for their core technologies. To achieve this, they start to open their innovation practices by adopting the open innovation paradigm, giving the opportunity to actors to engage in innovation networks. This paper discusses the supportive roles of platforms and platform thinking concepts in the practices that take place in innovation networks based on the dimensions of translations insuch networks. The paper illustrates two practical examples of such roles, exemplifying how platform adopting can enhance and support the innovative practices.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The 32nd Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS 32). - Molde, Norway : IRIS. ; , s. 1-24
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The developments of new technologies, the new scientific initiatives and thenew global market are giving rise to new phenomenon of collaboration, referred to asmass collaboration, which is mainly derived by communities and self-organizing, and isbased on the new Internet and Web 2.0 technologies, services and tools. To date, this newphenomenon has been researched from strategic perspectives lacking to address themanagerial practices to be applied for its adoption. This paper presents this newphenomenon of collaboration and the concept of Web 2.0, and its technologies, servicesand tools. The paper then proposes a process framework to be used for managing projectsand initiatives that specifically aim to adopt such collaboration form. The proposition ofthe framework is based on an illustration of a case study of a Danish municipality thatapplied mass collaboration on one of its development projects.

  • Value Creation in Digital Application Marketplaces: A Developers’ Perspective
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Information Systems.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital application marketplaces are increasingly relevant for digital platform owners seeking to reap the benefits of distributing, brokering, and operating applications by third-party developers. Owners of such marketplaces have two vital goals: address the needs of heterogeneous end-users and attract third-party developers. A key element in simultaneously accommodating these goals is value creation. However, while there is emerging literature on digital application marketplaces, little empirical evidence exits about the value creation process for and by application developers. Drawing on a research study of third-party developers, we synthesize the value creation perspective and digital platforms literature to develop an understanding of value creation in digital application marketplaces from the perspective of third-party developers. Our study identifies and explores six different value sources and their associated value creation and realization. In doing this, our research extends and complements existing digital platform literature and contributes new knowledge about new forms of value creation.

  • An Affordances Apparatus for Enterprise Social Media
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems. - Göteborg : AIS Electronic Library (AISeL). - 0905-0167 .- 1901-0990. ; 32:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current paper addresses one of the core yet complex issues in the study of technology in organizations: the relationship between the social and the material. Many scholars in the field of Information Systems have used the notion of affordance as a lens to investigate and theorize this relationship. However, knowledge contributions in this area are often abstract and impractical, or at least compel further conceptual development. This paper uses a relational view of affordances to study organizational social media affor- dances based on empirical data collected about the use of the Wiki technology at two large multinational organizations—CCC and IBM. It theorizes four key mechanisms—referring to other affordances (referential), collectively enacting significant affordances (communal), situation-dependent exploitation of affordances (situatedness), and exploiting other op- portunities for action (multiplicity), that embody the interaction between the social and the material. These mechanisms make up what is labelled in this paper as ‘the affordances ap- paratus’. The apparatus provides a conceptual structure for the interaction between social and material features that shows operational dynamics and processes underpinning the perception, enactment and exploitation of affordances. This apparatus is the main contribu- tion of the paper in that it gives researchers a conceptual tool for investigating affordances as relational constructs between the social and the material. It also helps in understanding how people navigate the use of technology features relative to their intentions and goals.

  • The Faces of Bureaucracy : Understanding Enterprise Social Media
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the The 9th Mediterranean Conference on Information Systems (MCIS).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The social media are often perceived as tools that support openness and flexible participation among individuals and communities. This might explain the reason why social media have become indispensible for many daily practices in organizations. But how do these organizations appropriate and use these media relative to their formal structures and characteristics is a question in focus for the current paper. Drawing on classical concepts of organizational bureaucracy from Weber (1978) and Eisenstadt (1959), we present a qualitative analysis of empirical data obtained from two large organizations that use a wiki as a collaborative knowledge platform. The results show how the tendency to organize the use of the wiki through introducing structure might create barriers for open and democratic collaboration and knowledge sharing at the workplace. They also show that while a freer approach to using wikis might allow for self-organizing, there is still a possibility for enacting social structures that limit openness and flexibility. As such, the paper contributes novel insights into how social media might be used in bureaucracies and soft bureaucracies.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 55th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Honolulu, HI : University of Hawai'i Press. - 9780998133157 ; , s. 7151-7160
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the use of mobile data to understand patterns of population movements and disease transmission during the Covid-19 outbreak. It also focuses on understanding the implications of using this data for individual privacy. Using a mixed-methods approach, we present 10 rich qualitative interviews and 412 surevey responses from participants across the Nordics. Our novel results show that the use of mobile data can be characterized by two main categories: validation data and complementary data. We also identify five implications for practice: sharing resources and expertise between health agencies and telecom companies; extended collaboration with multiple network operators;cross-disciplinary collaboration among multiple parties; developing data and privacy guidelines; and developing novel methods and tools to address the trade-off between maintaining individual privacy and obtaining detailed information from mobile data. These implications may inform immediate and future actions to prepare for, mitigate, and control the spread of infectious diseases using mobile data. They also show privacy-driven limitations of mobile data in terms of data accuracy, richness, and scope.

  • Value Creation in Digital Service Platforms
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The 28th Australasian Conference on Information Systems: ACIS2017. - Hobart, Australia.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Value creation is increasingly relevant for owners of digital service platforms (DSPs). These owners have two vital goals: increase their service base and sustain their service offerers. A key element in continuously accommodating these goals is value creation. While the literature on DSPs is growing, there is a paucity of knowledge on the value creation process in these platforms. Drawing on a qualitative study of Uber drivers in Denmark and Sweden, we synthesize Schumpeter’s theory of value creation to develop an understanding of the value creation process in DSPs from the perspective of service offerers. As such, our study proposes and contributes a value creation framework for DSPs that identifies 8 value sources and highlights resource combination and exchange in the process of value creation.
