    • Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 316 Sites C0006 and C0007 examined the deformation front of the Nankai accretionary prism offshore the Kii Peninsula, Japan. In the drilling area, the frontal thrust shows unusual behavior as compared to other regions of the Nankai Trough. Drilling results, integrated with observations from seismic reflection profiles, suggest that the frontal thrust has been active since similar to 0.78-0.436 Ma and accommodated similar to 13 to 34% of the estimated plate convergence during that time. The remainder has likely been distributed among out-of-sequence thrusts further landward and/or accommodated through diffuse shortening. Unlike results of previous drilling on the Nankai margin, porosity data provide no indication of undercompaction beneath thrust faults. Furthermore, pore water geochemistry data lack clear indicators of fluid flow from depth. These differences may be related to coarser material with higher permeability or more complex patterns of faulting that could potentially provide more avenues for fluid escape. In turn, fluid pressures may affect deformation. Well-drained, sand-rich material under the frontal thrust could have increased fault strength and helped to maintain a large taper angle near the toe. Recent resumption of normal frontal imbrication is inferred from seismic reflection data. Associated decollement propagation into weaker sediments at depth may help explain evidence for recent slope failures within the frontal thrust region. This evidence consists of seafloor bathymetry, normal faults documented in cores, and low porosities in near surface sediments that suggest removal of overlying material. Overall, results provide insight into the complex interactions between incoming materials, deformation, and fluids in the frontal thrust region.

  • Recent advances on containment iodine chemistry

    • The 5th FWP EURSAFE Project highlighted iodine chemistry in the containment as one of the issues requiring further research in order to reduce source term uncertainties. Consequently, a series of studies was launched in the 6th FWP SARNET Project aimed at improving the predictability of iodine behaviour during severe accidents via a better understanding of the complex chemical phenomena in the containment. In particular, SARNET has striven to foster common interpretation of integral and separate effect test data, production of new or improved models where necessary, and compilation of the existing knowledge of the subject. The work has been based on a substantial amount of experimental information made available from bench-scale projects (PARIS and EPICUR), via intermediate-scale tests (CAIMAN) to large-scale facilities (SISYPHE, THAI and PHEBUS-FP). In the experimental field, particular attention has been paid to two specific issues: the effects of radiation on both aqueous and gaseous iodine chemistry, and the mass transfer of iodine between aqueous and gaseous phases. Comparisons between calculations and results of the EPICUR and CAIMAN experiments suggest that the aqueous phase chemistry is reasonably well understood, although there are still some areas of uncertainty. Interpretation of integral experiments, like PHEBUS-FPT2, indicated that radiation-induced conversion of molecular iodine into particulate species (IxOy) could be responsible for the gaseous iodine depletion observed in the long-term. However, the results of much simpler, small-scale experiments have shown that further improvements in understanding and modelling are still needed. Mass transfer modelling has been extended to cover evaporating sump conditions based on SISYPHE data; however, application of this model to the larger scale THAI experiments seems not to be straightforward. In addition to these two major issues, some specific studies have been carried out concerning the potential effect of passive autocatalytic hydrogen recombiners on iodine volatility. The RECI analytical experiments have shown that metal iodides (namely Csl and Cdl(2)) are not stable and yield gaseous iodine when heated, in a humid atmosphere, at temperatures representative of recombiner operation. Another important undertaking successfully carried out has been the compilation of an Iodine Data Book, which provides a critical review of the experimental data and modelling approaches that have been used in the development of iodine source term methodologies. This should assist in a proper use of such models, and inform their future development.

  • Horizon-2020 ESFR-SMART project on Sodium Fast Reactor Safety: status after 18 months

    • To improve the public acceptance of the future nuclear power in Europe we have to demonstrate that the new reactors have significantly higher safety level compared to traditional reactors. The ESFR-SMART project (European Sodium Fast Reactor Safety Measures Assessment and Research Tools) aims at enhancing further the safety of Generation-IV SFRs and in particular of the commercial-size European Sodium Fast Reactor (ESFR) in accordance with the European Sustainable Nuclear Industrial Initiative (ESNII) roadmap and in close cooperation with the Advanced Sodium Technological Reactor for Industrial Demonstration (ASTRID) program. The project aims at 5 specific objectives: 1. Produce new experimental data in order to support calibration and validation of the computational tools for each defence-in-depth level. 2. Test and qualify new instrumentations in order to support their utilization in the reactor protection system. 3. Perform further calibration and validation of the computational tools for each defence-in-depth level in order to support safety assessments of Generation-IV SFRs, using the data produced in the project as well as selected legacy data. 4. Select, implement and assess new safety measures for the commercial-size ESFR, using the GIF methodologies, the FP7 CP-ESFR project legacy, the calibrated and validated codes and being in accordance with the update of the European and international safety frameworks taking into account the Fukushima accident. 5. Strengthen and link together new networks, in particular, the network of the European sodium facilities and the network of the European students working on the SFR technology. By addressing the industry, policy makers and general public, the project is expected to make a meaningful impact on economics, environment, EU policy and society. Selected results and milestones achieved during the first eighteen months of the project will be briefly presented, including − proposal of new safety measures for ESFR; − evaluation of ESFR core performance; − benchmarking of codes; − experimental programs; and − education and training.

    • Alcohol consumption is a moderately heritable trait, but the genetic basis in humans is largely unknown, despite its clinical and societal importance. We report a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of similar to 2.5 million directly genotyped or imputed SNPs with alcohol consumption (gram per day per kilogram body weight) among 12 population-based samples of European ancestry, comprising 26,316 individuals, with replication genotyping in an additional 21,185 individuals. SNP rs6943555 in autism susceptibility candidate 2 gene (AUTS2) was associated with alcohol consumption at genome-wide significance (P = 4 x 10(-8) to P = 4 x 10(-9)). We found a genotype-specific expression of AUTS2 in 96 human prefrontal cortex samples (P = 0.026) and significant (P < 0.017) differences in expression of AUTS2 in whole-brain extracts of mice selected for differences in voluntary alcohol consumption. Downregulation of an AUTS2 homolog caused reduced alcohol sensitivity in Drosophila (P < 0.001). Our finding of a regulator of alcohol consumption adds knowledge to our understanding of genetic mechanisms influencing alcohol drinking behavior.

    • Wound biofilms represent a particularly challenging problem in modern medicine. They are increasingly antibiotic resistant and can prevent the healing of chronic wounds. However, current treatment and diagnostic options are hampered by the complexity of the biofilm environment. In this review, we present new chemical avenues in biofilm sensors and new materials to treat wound biofilms, offering promise for better detection, chemical specificity, and biocompatibility. We briefly discuss existing methods for biofilm detection and focus on novel, sensor-based approaches that show promise for early, accurate detection of biofilm formation on wound sites and that can be translated to point-of-care settings. We then discuss technologies inspired by new materials for efficient biofilm eradication. We focus on ultrasound-induced microbubbles and nanomaterials that can both penetrate the biofilm and simultaneously carry active antimicrobials and discuss the benefits of those approaches in comparison to conventional methods.

    • We consider an iterative scheme for solving a coupled geomechanics and flow problem in a fractured poroelastic medium. The fractures are treated as possibly non-planar interfaces. Our iterative scheme is an adaptation due to the presence of fractures of a classical fixed stress-splitting scheme. We prove that the iterative scheme is a contraction in an appropriate norm. Moreover, the solution converges to the unique weak solution of the coupled problem.
