  • Open Source SCADA Implementation and PMU Integration for Power System Monitoring and Control Applications
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition, 2014 IEEE. - : IEEE conference proceedings. ; , s. -5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the implementation of an Open Source SCADA system in a laboratory and discusses methods for PMU data integration into SCADA. SCADA BR is a web-browser based SCADA that enables the user to access monitoring, control and automation equipment over multiple protocols. For implementation, protection relays from SEL are configured as DNP3 outstations to act as slaves and SCADA BR which is installed in one of the workstations in the laboratory acts as master. The evaluation of SCADA BR has been performed by executing a power system model in a real-time simulator and coupling its analog outputs with the protection relays. The integration of PMU measurements in the SCADA system and their use for monitoring is discussed. The limitations of the SCADA systems to fully utilize PMU data are also presented.

  • Synchrophasor Network, Laboratory and Software Applications Developed in the STRONg2rid Project
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: PES General Meeting Conference & Exposition, 2014 IEEE. - : IEEE conference proceedings. ; , s. 1-5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the activities carried out in one of the work packages of the Nordic Energy Research funded project Smart Transmission Grid Operation and Control (STRONg2rid). The main objective of the work package is to deploy a state-of-the-art software and hardware for developing power system operation, protection, control and automation applications. Several PMUs have been deployed at partner universities and a network of synchrophasors has been set up. In addition the Smart Transmission System Laboratory (SmarTS-Lab) has been established. This laboratory serves as a test-bench to develop and verify smart transmission grid technologies. A software development kit (S3DK) was developed within the project. The S3DK has been used to implement PMU-based applications and deploy them in different targets, including smart phones and tablets. Several tools and software applications which utilize synchrophasor measurements (from the laboratory or the deployed university PMU network) to perform power system monitoring, sub-synchronous power oscillation detection, etc., have been developed and are presented herein.

  • Analysis of Communication Network Challenges for Synchrophasor-Based Wide-Area Applications
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IREP Symposium. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479901999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wide-area synchrophasor applications inherently depend on the underlying IT and communications infrastructure supporting them. In particular, closed loop control systems for power grid oscillation damping is problematic, as it is a complex mixture of power grid monitoring, communication network properties and overall system stability issues. This article offers a holistic analysis of these fields, proposing a combined requirement on the full system: to keep system delays down to maintain stability. Simulation results to support the analysis findings, also showing how observability of power oscillations is important in combination with system delays related to feedback signals, and finally laying out experimentation plans to be performed in the lab on a complex power-grid model with real PMUs, communication network and controllers interacting with the SmarTS Lab real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulator platform.

  • PMU-based voltage instability detection through linear regression
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 IEEE PES Asia-Pacific Power and Energy Engineering Conference (APPEEC). - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479925223 ; , s. 6837108-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a linear regression method using synchrophasor measurement for voltage stability monitoring. The method preprocesses synchrophasor measurements in order to eliminate inconsistencies and errors that embedded in them. This data is then used in the computation of sensitivities suitable for voltage stability monitoring. Some important electrical components such as Over Excitation limiter and OnLoad Tap Changer which create discrete changes affecting in voltage instability have been included to assess the method's performance. Moreover, both process and measurement noises, obtained from real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation and real PMU measurements from the Norwegian network, respectively, have been applied to validate robustness of the proposed methodology.

  • Implementation and testing of a real-time mode estimation algorithm using ambient PMU data
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 Clemson University Power Systems Conference, PSC 2014. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479939602 ; , s. 6808116-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a software implementation of a real-time power system mode estimator application which uses ambient synchrophasor data. The software is built using Statnett's Synchrophasor Software Development Kit (SDK) as a platform for fast prototyping of real-time synchrophasor applications. The SDK extracts synchrophasor data received in the IEEE C.37.118 protocol and provides them as LabVIEW signals. These signals are preprocessed and mode frequencies and damping ratios are calculated by Yule-Walker's method. The implemented LabVIEW software employs state machine logics which enables modifications and upgrades to the algorithm.

  • A smart transmission grid for Europe : Research challenges in developing grid enabling technologies
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 2011 IEEE. - : IEEE. - 9781457710001 ; , s. 1-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smart grids have attracted significant attention lately, and one can even speak of a hype. However, much of the attention is paid to the distribution side and consumer interaction. Nevertheless, also at the transmission level important improvements can be achieved through farsighted and careful intelligent grid design and implementation. This paper identifies different research areas and their respective boundary interactions in order to enable a practical #x201C;Smart Grid #x201D; implementation in the European power system. Emphasis is placed on three essential aspects of the Smart Transmission Grid. First, the necessary evolution of synchrophasor measurement technology is discussed, as well as the limitations towards and its full integration into power system operation and control. An important aspect to achieve this full integration is the necessity to test and integrate any proposed solution in an open and transparent environment. Secondly, the IT, data and communications paradigm is critically discussed. And lastly, the key questions that are open to the transmission system operators are discussed, specifically regarding the coordination within the pan-European power system and its security. Going beyond the purely academic point-of-view, this paper specifically aims to bring a realistic approach towards research for the transmission network.

  • Effects of forced oscillations in power system damping estimation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 2012 IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements for Power Systems, AMPS 2012 Proceedings. - : IEEE. - 9781467315395 ; , s. 59-64
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyzes the impact of forced power system oscillations on mode damping estimation. Parametric (Yule-Walker) and non-parametric (Welch) methods for mode estimation are tested in the presence of forced power system oscillations. For mode damping estimation based on non-parametric methods, an application of Half Power Point method is proposed. Performances of the mode estimators are evaluated using both simulated and real synchrophasor data from the Nordic Grid. The presence of forced oscillations poses difficulties to mode damping estimators, these difficulties are identified, illustrated and explained herein.

  • Smart transmission grids vision for Europe : Towards a realistic research agenda
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Green Energy and Technology. - London : Springer Verlag. - 1865-3529 .- 1865-3537. ; , s. 185-220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smart grids have attracted significant attention lately, and one can even speak of hype. However, much of the attention is paid to the distribution side and consumer interaction. Nevertheless, also at the transmission-level important improvements can be achieved through farsighted and careful intelligent grid design and implementation. This chapter describes and proposes a realistic research agenda in which smart transmission grid (STG) research may operate, with focus on operational planning and operations of the pan-European electricity grid. Firstly, a research outlook seen from current European policy is laid out to redefine the most consequential research directions liked to the needs of transmission systems from real time up to planning. Secondly, operations (real time to hours) of the transmission system are discussed, and monitoring and control technologies that can be achieved through the application of synchronized phasor measurement technology are highlighted as a means toward a STG. Next, challenges related to planning (hours to years) are discussed keeping in mind the need of flexibility, coordination, and new methods for assessing system security. Going beyond the purely academic point of view, this chapter specifically aims to bring a realistic approach toward research for electric power transmission to be able to transform into a STG.

  • Spectral estimation of low-frequency oscillations in the Nordic grid using ambient synchrophasor data under the presence of forced oscillations
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 IEEE Grenoble Conference PowerTech, POWERTECH 2013. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781467356695 ; , s. 6652190-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spectral analysis applied to synchrophasor data can provide valuable information about lightly damped low-frequency modes in power systems. This paper demonstrates application of two non-parametric spectral estimators focusing on mode frequency estimation. The first one is the well-known Welch spectral estimator whereas the application of Multitaper method is proposed here. In addition, the paper discusses mode estimator tuning procedures and the estimators' performances in the presence of 'forced' oscillations. The validity of the proposed application of the non-parametric estimators and tuning procedures is verified through both simulated data and PMU data originating from the high-voltage grid of the Nordic power system. Special attention is given to the analysis of the behaviour of different low frequency modes present in the Nordic grid, including that of forced oscillations.
