  • Plausible and desirable futures in the Anthropocene : A new research agenda
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Global Environmental Change. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-3780 .- 1872-9495. ; 39, s. 351-362
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the concept of the Anthropocene reflects the past and present nature, scale and magnitude of human impacts on the Earth System, its true significance lies in how it can be used to guide attitudes, choices, policies and actions that influence the future. Yet, to date much of the research on the Anthropocene has focused on interpreting past and present changes, while saying little about the future. Likewise, many futures studies have been insufficiently rooted in an understanding of past changes, in particular the long-term co-evolution of bio-physical and human systems. The Anthropocene perspective is one that encapsulates a world of intertwined drivers, complex dynamic structures, emergent phenomena and unintended consequences, manifest across different scales and within interlinked biophysical constraints and social conditions. In this paper we discuss the changing role of science and the theoretical, methodological and analytical challenges in considering futures of the Anthropocene. We present three broad groups of research questions on: (1) societal goals for the future; (2) major trends and dynamics that might favor or hinder them; (3) and factors that might propel or impede transformations towards desirable futures. Tackling these questions requires the development of novel approaches integrating natural and social sciences as well as the humanities beyond what is current today. We present three examples, one from each group of questions, illustrating how science might contribute to the identification of desirable and plausible futures and pave the way for transformations towards them. We argue that it is time for debates on the sustainability of the Anthropocene to focus on opportunities for realizing desirable and plausible futures.

  • Down to Earth : Contextualizing the Anthropocene
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Global Environmental Change. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-3780. ; 39, s. 341-350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ‘Anthropocene’ is now being used as a conceptual frame by different communities and in a variety of contexts to understand the evolving human–environment relationship. However, as we argue in this paper, the notion of an Anthropos, or ‘humanity’, as global, unified ‘geological force’ threatens to mask the diversity and differences in the actual conditions and impacts of humankind, and does not do justice to the diversity of local and regional contexts. For this reason, we interpret in this article the notion of an Anthropocene in a more context-dependent, localized and social understanding. We do this through illustrating examples from four issue domains, selected for their variation in terms of spatial and temporal scale, systems of governance and functional interdependencies: nitrogen cycle distortion (in particular as it relates to food security); ocean acidification; urbanization; and wildfires. Based on this analysis, we systematically address the consequences of the lens of the Anthropocene for the governance of social-ecological systems, focusing on the multi-level, functional and sectoral organization of governance, and possible redefinitions of governance systems and policy domains. We conclude that the notion of the Anthropocene, once seen in light of social inequalities and regional differences, allows for novel analysis of issue-based problems in the context of a global understanding, in both academic and political terms. This makes it a useful concept to help leverage and (re-)focus our efforts in a more innovative and effective way to transition towards sustainability.

  • Compliance in small-scale fisheries is linked to fisher-trader relations : not fishers alone (Southeast Asian case study)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries. - 0960-3166 .- 1573-5184. ; 33:3, s. 751-766
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fisher-trader relations are influential in many small-scale fisheries worldwide. The ability to influence emergent fishing practices has shifted traders into focus of fisheries policy-making. Formal policies could be more effective if they were complementary to and build on an understanding of the role of traders, their interaction with fishers, and how these contribute to the emergence of compliant or non-compliant fishing practices. Here, we first compared fishing practices with policies to assess the latter's effectiveness in Indonesia, Spermonde. Second, we identified the roles and interactions of fisher-trader relations in shaping emergent fishing practices using the social-ecological action situation framework. We found that 6 out of 7 fishing practices were at least partially non-compliant with formal policies. Second, fisher-trader relations mediated by social norms enabled more fishing practices to emerge than those focused solely on selling and buying fish. Third, traders' interactions with other fishery actors enabled non-compliant fishing practices. These findings comprehensively characterize fishers' and traders' roles and interactions in the emergence of fishing practices. Policy effectiveness could be enhanced by engaging in traders' interactions with other fishery actors.

  • Fit between formal management and informal rules related to fisher-trader relationships
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Fisher-trader relationships (FTR) encompass a wide range of influential and informal relationships that are present in many small-scale fisheries (SSF) worldwide. FTRs' potential to establish and maintain informal rules (FTR rules) that affect the resilience of fishing practices has shifted them into focus for formal fisheries management. Linking formal management rules to the landscape of informal rules requires a better understanding of fishers and traders’ role in rule-making and types of informal rules related to fishing practices. Here, we map out the informal rules related to fishing practices in Indonesia, Spermonde and compare them to formal fisheries management measures. We further assess fishers and traders' role in shaping certain fishing practices from which we draw preliminary conclusions about how and when formal fisheries management should involve fishers and traders. We find that FTR rules in Spermonde relate to a diversity of fishing practices and correspond to formal fisheries management measures such as in- and output control, temporal and spatial management. The emergence of fishing practices are linked to multiple functions within the FTR and to the network of relations of fishers and traders with other groups. These external relations are primarily served by traders. Thus, we argue that a foundation for linking formal fisheries management and informal rules exists on the basis of their similarity. Understanding the multiple functions and networks of relations can help identify intervention points for building or breaking resilience of fishing practices in Spermonde and beyond.

  • Healing Brazil's Blue Amazon : The role of knowledge networks in nurturing cross-scale transformations at the frontlines of ocean sustainability
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Marine Science. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-7745. ; 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • HIGHLIGHTS • The Anthropocene compels unlocking of ocean-related network capabilities. • Orchestration of local, regional, and global knowledge networks can augment transformative capacity. • Transdisciplinary network diagnostics are promising social learning tools. • Strategic advice for transformational research in ocean territories are provided. This paper dedicates to understanding of what is needed to achieve the transformation of ocean governance. Based on the theory of transformative agency conceptualized in a multi-level governance context, we build on recent novel inter- and transdisciplinary research in Brazil to explore the opportunities for transformation in the dynamic, complex, and multi-level field of ocean governance. We focus this analysis on three transformation processes toward developing a socially and ecologically coherent marine protected area network as the core of a marine spatial planning process for enhanced ecosystem-based polycentric governance of the country's Exclusive Economic Zone. The findings illuminate leverage points for achieving (much needed) transformation in Brazilian ocean governance and potentially beyond. These include: connecting transformative actions into coherent narratives and testing strategic advice derived from theories of transformative agency to promote regime shifts in ocean governance systems; setting of more ambitious social mobilization targets; fostering orchestration of knowledge-networks considering multiple issues, territorial and institutional levels; implementing institutional learning experiments; supporting transformational trajectories toward co-evolutionary, polycentric, ecosystem- and area-based ocean governance systems; and pursuing gradual, incremental structural understanding of a given knowledge network field as a major driver of catalyzing transformative change. Hereby, this article advances understanding of how to better navigate the transformation toward enhanced sustainability in an important part of the Atlantic and hence of our global ocean.

  • Analysis across case-based global sustainability projects : an emerging challenge for ocean conflict research in the Anthropocene
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Maritime Studies. - : Springer Nature. - 1872-7859 .- 2212-9790. ; 22:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A growing number of global ocean conflict studies over the last decade have set out to advance sustainability in the Anthropocene. Many of these research projects use multiple case studies to extract lessons for wider contexts. The methods used by these studies, and the extent to which their results have validity beyond the individual case study, often remain unclear. This paper explores the challenges in performing cross-case analysis within what we denote as case-based globally focussed sustainability projects (CB-GSPs) and indicates solutions by combining information from semi-structured interviews with leading scientists from eight CB-GSPs. We identify six distinct challenges that are common across these studies with regard to generating actionable knowledge through cross-case analysis. Based on these findings, we propose a set of best practice recommendations for scientists, project partners, and funders to co-produce actionable knowledge for global projects on ocean conflict.

  • Generating Knowledge on Networks in Environmental Governance
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Human Ecology Review. - 1074-4827. ; 26:2, s. 3-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper introduces the special issue on “Generating Sustainability-Supporting Knowledge on Social Networks in the Governance and Management of Social–Ecological Systems.” Understanding the interactions of actors and institutions is important for successful governance of human–nature relations. Social network analysis is able to capture and analyze these governance and management interactions, and there is a range of existing tools for collecting, visualizing, and modeling data on social and social–ecological networks. This introductory paper aims to give an overview of the collected papers as well as an outlook of new arising topics in the field. After presenting the single contributions to this special issue, we share our thoughts on network types and performance, network states and dynamics, limits of network studies, new conceptual focuses in network analysis, and methodological innovations (mixed methods and new tools). We conclude with a reflection of the contribution of this special issue to environmental governance.

  • Untangling social–ecological interactions : A methods portfolio approach to tackling contemporary sustainability challenges in fisheries
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Fish and Fisheries. - : Wiley. - 1467-2960 .- 1467-2979. ; 23:5, s. 1202-1220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Meeting the objectives of sustainable fisheries management requires attention to the complex interactions between humans, institutions and ecosystems that give rise to fishery outcomes. Traditional approaches to studying fisheries often do not fully capture, nor focus on these complex interactions between people and ecosystems. Despite advances in the scope and scale of interactions encompassed by more holistic methods, for example ecosystem-based fisheries management approaches, no single method can adequately capture the complexity of human–nature interactions. Approaches that combine quantitative and qualitative analytical approaches are necessary to generate a deeper understanding of these interactions and illuminate pathways to address fisheries sustainability challenges. However, combining methods is inherently challenging and requires understanding multiple methods from different, often disciplinarily distinct origins, demanding reflexivity of the researchers involved. Social–ecological systems’ research has a history of utilising combinations of methods across the social and ecological realms to account for spatial and temporal dynamics, uncertainty and feedbacks that are key components of fisheries. We describe several categories of analytical methods (statistical modelling, network analysis, dynamic modelling, qualitative analysis and controlled behavioural experiments) and highlight their applications in fisheries research, strengths and limitations, data needs and overall objectives. We then discuss important considerations of a methods portfolio development process, including reflexivity, epistemological and ontological concerns and illustrate these considerations via three case studies. We show that, by expanding their methods portfolios, researchers will be better equipped to study the complex interactions shaping fisheries and contribute to solutions for sustainable fisheries management.

  • Aquaculture governance : five engagement arenas for sustainability transformation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability. - 1877-3435 .- 1877-3443. ; 65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A greater focus on governance is needed to facilitate effective and substantive progress toward sustainability transformations in the aquaculture sector. Concerted governance efforts can help move the sector beyond fragmented technical questions associated with intensification and expansion, social and environmental impacts, and toward system-based approaches that address interconnected sustainability issues. Through a review and expert-elicitation process, we identify five engagement arenas to advance a governance agenda for aquaculture sustainability transformation: (1) setting sustainability transformation goals, (2) cross-sectoral linkages, (3) land–water–sea connectivity, (4) knowledge and innovation, and (5) value chains. We then outline the roles different actors and modes of governance can play in fostering sustainability transformations, and discuss action items for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to operationalize activities within their engagement arenas.
