  • Unveiling nano-scale chemical inhomogeneity in surface oxide films formed on V- and N-containing martensite stainless steel by synchrotron X-ray photoelectron emission spectroscopy/microscopy and microscopic X-ray absorption spectroscopy
  • 2025
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science & Technology. - : Chinese Society of Metals. - 1005-0302. ; 205, s. 191-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nano-scale chemical inhomogeneity in surface oxide films formed on a V- and N-containing martensite stainless steel and tempering heating induced changes are investigated by a combination of synchrotron- based hard X-ray Photoelectron emission spectroscopy (HAXPES) and microscopy (HAXPEEM) as well as microscopic X-ray absorption spectroscopy (μ-XAS) techniques. The results reveal the inhomogeneity in the oxide films on the micron-sized Cr2N- and VN-type particles, while the inhomogeneity on the martensite matrix phase exists due to localised formation of nano-sized tempering nitride particles at 600 °C. The oxide film formed on Cr2N-type particles is rich in Cr2O3 compared with that on the martensite matrix and VN-type particles. With the increase of tempering temperature, Cr2O3 formation is faster for the oxidation of Cr in the martensite matrix than the oxidation of Cr nitride-rich particles.

  • Demonstrating Pressure Jumping as a Tool to Address the Pressure Gap in High Pressure Photoelectron Spectroscopy of CO and CO2 Hydrogenation on Rh(211)
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ChemPhysChem. - 1439-4235 .- 1439-7641. ; 25:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Operando probing by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of certain hydrogenation reactions are often limited by the scattering of photoelectrons in the gas phase. This work describes a method designed to partially circumvent this so called pressure gap. By performing a rapid switch from a high pressure (where acquisition is impossible) to a lower pressure we can for a short while probe a remnant of the high pressure surface as well as the time dynamics during the re-equilibration to the new pressure. This methodology is demonstrated using the CO2 and the CO hydrogenation reaction over Rh(211). In the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, the remnant surface of a 2 bar pressure shows an adsorbate distribution which favors chemisorbed CHx adsorbates over chemisorbed CO. This contrasts against previous static operando spectra acquired at lower pressures. Furthermore, the pressure jumping method yields a faster acquisition and more detailed spectra than static operando measurements above 1 bar. In the CO hydrogenation reaction, we observe that CHx accumulated faster during the 275 mbar low pressure regime, and different hypotheses are presented regarding this observation.

  • In depth analysis of the passive film on martensitic tool alloy: Effect of tempering temperature
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Corrosion Science. - : Elsevier. - 0010-938X .- 1879-0496. ; 234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Effect of tempering temperature on the composition of the passive film of a martensitic tool alloy was studied by synchrotron-based hard/soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical analyses. The contents of Cr and Mo in the passive film are affected by precipitation of tempering carbides. Increase of tempering temperature from 200 to 525°C leads to enhanced formation of Cr/Mo-rich tempering carbides and Cr depletion. Tempering at 525°C results in a Cr content < 11 at% in the underlying metallic layer and formation of a Cr-deficient defective passive film, and thus loss of passivity for the tool alloy in corrosive conditions.

  • Magnetic and Electronic Properties of Weyl Semimetal Co2MnGa Thin Films
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nanomaterials. - : MDPI. - 2079-4991. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic Weyl semimetals are newly discovered quantum materials with the potential for use in spintronic applications. Of particular interest is the cubic Heusler compound Co2MnGa due to its inherent magnetic and topological properties. This work presents the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of magnetron co-sputtered Co2MnGa thin films, with thicknesses ranging from 10 to 80 nm. Polarized neutron reflectometry confirmed a uniform magnetization through the films. Hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed a high degree of spin polarization and localized (itinerant) character of the Mn d (Co d) valence electrons and accompanying magnetic moments. Further, broadband and field orientation-dependent ferromagnetic resonance measurements indicated a relation between the thickness-dependent structural and magnetic properties. The increase of the tensile strain-induced tetragonal distortion in the thinner films was reflected in an increase of the cubic anisotropy term and a decrease of the perpendicular uniaxial term. The lattice distortion led to a reduction of the Gilbert damping parameter and the thickness-dependent film quality affected the inhomogeneous linewidth broadening. These experimental findings will enrich the understanding of the electronic and magnetic properties of magnetic Weyl semimetal thin films.

  • Accurate determination of the valence band edge in hard x-ray photoemission spectra using GW theory
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 119:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce a new method for determining accurate values of the valence-band maximum in x-ray photoemission spectra. Specifically, we align the sharpest peak in the valence-band region of the experimental spectrum with the corresponding feature of a theoretical valence-band density of states curve from ab initio GW theory calculations. This method is particularly useful for soft and hard x-ray photoemission studies of materials with a mixture of valence-band characters, where strong matrix element effects can render standard methods for extracting the valence-band maximum unreliable. We apply our method to hydrogen-terminated boron-doped diamond, which is a promising substrate material for novel solar cell devices. By carrying out photoemission experiments with variable light polarizations, we verify the accuracy of our analysis and the general validity of the method. Published by AIP Publishing.

  • Spectroscopic fingerprints for charge localization in the organic semiconductor (DOEO)(4)[HgBr4]center dot TCE
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal B. Condensed Matter and Complex Systems. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6028. ; 88:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Changes of the electronic structure accompanied by charge localization and a transition to an antiferromagnetic ground state were observed in the organic semiconductor (DOEO)(4)[HgBr4]center dot TCE. Localization starts in the temperature region of about 150 K and the antiferromagnetic state occurs below 60 K. The magnetic moment of the crystal contains contributions of inclusions (droplets), and individual paramagnetic centers formed by localized holes and free charge carriers at 2 K. Two types of inclusions of 100-400 nm and 2-5 nm sizes were revealed by transmission electron microscopy. Studying the temperatureand angular dependence of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra revealed fingerprints of antiferromagnetic contributions as well as paramagnetic resonance spectra of individual localized charge carriers. The results point on coexistence of antiferromagnetic long and short range order as evident from a second ESR line. Photoelectron spectroscopy in the VUV, soft and hard X-ray range shows temperature-dependent effects upon crossing the critical temperatures around 60 K and 150 K. The substantially different probing depths of soft and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy yield information on the surface termination. The combined investigation using complementary methods at the same sample reveals the close relation of changes in the transport properties and in the energy distribution of electronic states.
