  • 2022

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Forward Physics Facility (FPF) is a proposal to create a cavern with the space and infrastructure to support a suite of far-forward experiments at the Large Hadron Collider during the High Luminosity era. Located along the beam collision axis and shielded from the interaction point by at least 100 m of concrete and rock, the FPF will house experiments that will detect particles outside the acceptance of the existing large LHC experiments and will observe rare and exotic processes in an extremely low-background environment. In this work, we summarize the current status of plans for the FPF, including recent progress in civil engineering in identifying promising sites for the FPF and the experiments currently envisioned to realize the FPF's physics potential. We then review the many Standard Model and new physics topics that will be advanced by the FPF, including searches for long-lived particles, probes of dark matter and dark sectors, high-statistics studies of TeV neutrinos of all three flavors, aspects of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, and high-energy astroparticle physics.

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We discuss γ ∗γ ∗→ ηc(1S) ; ηc (2S) transition form factor for both virtual photons. The general formula is given. We use difierent models for the cc̄ wave function obtained from the solution of the Schrödinger equation for diffierent cc̄ potentials: harmonic oscillator, Cornell, logarithmic, power-law, Coulomb and Buchmüller{Tye. We showed some examples of wave functions in the Light Front representation as well as in the rest frame of cc̄. We compare our results to the BaBar experimental data for ηc(1S), with one real and one virtual photon, and to the values collected by the Particle Data Group for the form factor F(0; 0), decay width τγ γ and decay constant fηc . We also consider the non-relativistic limit for F(0; 0) with the wave function evaluated at the origin R(0).

  • 2019

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We derive the light-front wave function (LFWF) representation of the γ∗γ∗→ηc(1S),ηc(2S) transition form factor F(Q12,Q22) for two virtual photons in the initial state. For the LFWF, we use different models obtained from the solution of the Schrödinger equation for a variety of cc̄ potentials. We compare our results to the BABAR experimental data for the ηc(1S) transition form factor, for one real and one virtual photon. We observe that the onset of the asymptotic behavior is strongly delayed and discuss applicability of the collinear and/or massless limit. We present some examples of two-dimensional distributions for F(Q12,Q22). A factorization breaking measure is proposed and factorization breaking effects are quantified and shown to be almost model independent. Factorization is shown to be strongly broken, and a scaling of the form factor as a function of Q̄2=(Q12+Q22)/2 is obtained.

  • In: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-7998. ; 93:9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Drell-Yan (DY) process of dilepton pair production off nuclei is not affected by final state interactions, energy loss, or absorption. A detailed phenomenological study of this process is thus convenient for investigation of the onset of initial-state effects in proton-nucleus (pA) collisions. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the DY process in pA interactions at RHIC and LHC energies in the color dipole framework. We analyze several effects affecting the nuclear suppression, RpA

  • Editor's Choice - Recommendations for Registry Data Collection for Revascularisations of Acute Limb Ischaemia : A Delphi Consensus from the International Consortium of Vascular Registries
  • 2019
  • In: European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. - : W B SAUNDERS CO LTD. - 1078-5884 .- 1532-2165. ; 57:6, s. 816-821
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Objective: To develop a minimum core data set for evaluation of acute limb ischaemia (ALI) revascularisation treatment and outcomes that would enable collaboration among international registries. Methods: A modified Delphi approach was used to achieve consensus among international multidisciplinary vascular specialists and registry members of the International Consortium of Vascular Registries (ICVR). Variables identified in the literature or suggested by the expert panel, and variables, including definitions, currently used in 15 countries in the ICVR, were assessed to define both a minimum core and an optimum data set to register ALI treatment. Clinical relevance and practicability were both assessed, and consensus was defined as >= 80% agreement among participants. Results: Of 40 invited experts, 37 completed a preliminary survey and 31 completed the two subsequent Delphi rounds via internet exchange and face to face discussions. In total, 117 different items were generated from the various registry data forms, an extensive review of the literature, and additional suggestions from the experts, for potential inclusion in the data set. Ultimately, 35 items were recommended for inclusion in the minimum core data set, including 23 core items important for all registries, and an additional 12 more specific items for registries capable of capturing more detail. These 35 items supplement previous data elements recommended for registering chronic peripheral arterial occlusive disease treatment. Conclusion: A modified Delphi study allowed 37 international vascular registry experts to achieve a consensus recommendation for a minimum core and an optimum data set for registries covering patients who undergo ALI revascularisation. Continued global harmonisation of registry infrastructure and definition of items allows international comparisons and global quality improvement. Furthermore, it can help to define and monitor standards of care and enable international research collaboration.

  • Drell-Yan phenomenology in the color dipole picture revisited
  • 2016
  • In: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-7998. ; 93:3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • An extensive phenomenological study of the Drell-Yan (DY) process in pp collisions at various energies is performed in the color dipole framework. Besides previously studied γ∗ production we also include the Z0 contribution relevant at large dilepton invariant masses. We investigate the DY cross section differential in invariant mass, rapidity and transverse momentum of the dilepton pair in pp collisions at the RHIC and LHC. We consider three different phenomenological models for the dipole cross section and find a reasonable agreement with the available data. As a further test of the color dipole formalism, we also study the correlation function in azimuthal angle between the dilepton pair and a forward pion Δφ for different energies, dilepton rapidities and invariant masses. The characteristic double-peak structure of the correlation function around Δφ≃π found for very forward pions and low-mass dilepton pairs is sensitive to the saturation effects and can be tested by future DY measurements in pp collisions.

  • Study of dilepton production in association with leading hadron at RHIC and LHC energies
  • 2015
  • In: Proceedings of Science. - 1824-8039.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We demonstrate that current experimental data on γ/Z0 and heavy quarkonium production in pp collisions at RHIC and LHC energies can be described by the color dipole formalism. Three different phenomenological models based on saturation physics are used to estimate the Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton spectra in such processes. In order to further constrain QCD dynamics we suggest to measure the azimuthal correlation function C(Δφ) between mid-rapidity DY pairs and central/forward pions. On the other hand, this is a key background for C-odd heavy quarkonia (e.g. J/Φ and ϒ) production at high pT's which can be accompanied by a high-pT hadron from fragmentation of an additional gluon according to the Color-Singlet model (CSM). As a first step, we have estimated the transverse momentum distributions J/Φ; and ϒ in the dipole CSM and found a reasonable agreement with data at various energies. Similarly to the DY case we suggest to study correlations between a high-pT jet and J/Φ or ϒ in the dilepton channel at mid-rapidities.

  • 2016
  • In: Physical Review D - Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology. - 2470-0010. ; 94:11
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this work, we investigate production of Drell-Yan (DY) pairs in proton-nucleus collisions in kinematic regions where the corresponding coherence length does not exceed the nuclear radius, RA, and the quantum coherence effects should be treated with special care. The results for the nucleus-to-nucleon production ratio available in the literature so far are usually based on the assumption of a very long coherence length (LCL) lc RA. Since the onset of coherence effects is controlled by the coherence length lc, we estimated its magnitude in various kinematic regions of the DY process and found that the LCL approximation should not be used at small and medium c.m. collision energies (s 200 GeV) as well as at large dilepton invariant masses. In order to obtain realistic predictions, we computed for the first time the DY cross section using the generalized color dipole approach based on the rigorous Green function formalism, which naturally incorporates the color transparency and quantum coherence effects and hence allows us to estimate the nuclear shadowing with no restrictions on the CL. In addition to the shadowing effect, we studied a complementary effect of initial state interactions (ISI) that causes an additional suppression at large values of the Feynman variable. Numerical results for the nuclear modification factor accounting for the ISI effect and the finite lc are compared to the data available from the fixed-target Fermi National Laboratory measurements and a good agreement has been found. Besides, we present new predictions for the nuclear suppression as a function of dilepton rapidity and invariant mass in the kinematic regions that can be probed by the RHIC collider as well as by the planned AFTER@LHC and LHCb fixed-target experiments.

  • 2017
  • In: Physical Review D - Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology. - 2470-0010. ; 96:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present a detailed study of open heavy flavor production in high-energy pp collisions at the LHC in the color dipole framework. The transverse momentum distributions of produced b-jets, accounting for the jet energy loss, as well as produced open charm D and bottom B mesons in distinct rapidity intervals relevant for LHC measurements are computed. The dipole model results for the differential b-jet production cross section are compared to the recent ATLAS and CMS data while the results for D and B mesons production cross sections - to the corresponding LHCb data. Several models for the phenomenological dipole cross section have been employed to estimate theoretical uncertainties of the dipole model predictions. We demonstrate that the primordial transverse momentum distribution of the projectile gluon significantly affects the meson spectra at low transverse momenta and contributes to the largest uncertainty of the dipole model predictions.

  • Investigating the dominant regions of the phase space associated with cc production relevant for the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux
  • 2018
  • In: Investigating the dominant regions of the phase space associated with cc production relevant for the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux. - 1824-8039. ; 316
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A detailed mapping of the dominant kinematical domains contributing to the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux at high neutrino energies is presented by studying their sensitivity to the cuts on several kinematical variables crucial for charm production in cosmic ray scattering in the atmosphere. This includes the maximal center-of-mass energy for proton-proton scattering, the longitudinal momentum fractions of partons in the projectile (cosmic ray) and target (nucleus of the atmosphere), and the Feynman xF variable. We find that the production of neutrinos with energies larger than Eν > 107 GeV is particularly sensitive to the cm. energies larger than the ones at the LHC and to the longitudinal momentum fractions in the projectile 108 < × < 105. Our results indicate that the precision data on the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux can efficiently constrain the mechanism of heavy quark production and underlying QCD dynamics in kinematical ranges beyond the reach of the current collider measurements.

  • Isolated photon production and pion-photon correlations in high-energy pp and pA collisions
  • 2020
  • In: Physical Review D. - 2470-0010. ; 101:9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A phenomenological study of the isolated photon production in high energy pp and pA collisions at RHIC and LHC energies is performed. Using the color dipole approach we investigate the production cross section differential in the transverse momentum of the photon considering three different phenomenological models for the universal dipole cross section. We also present the predictions for the rapidity dependence of the ratio of pA to pp cross sections. As a further test of the formalism, for different energies and photon rapidities we analyze the correlation function in azimuthal angle Δφ between the photon and a forward pion. The characteristic double-peak structure of the correlation function around Δφ≃π observed previously for Drell-Yan pair production is found for an isolated photon emitted into the forward rapidity region which can be tested by future experiments.

  • 2016
  • In: Proceedings of Science. - 1824-8039. ; Part F128560
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We study the initial-state interactions (non-coherence) and nuclear shadowing (coherence) effects in the Drell-Yan pair production process in p+Pb collisions at the LHC energies. The analysis of the nuclear suppression, RpA < 1, has been performed in the color dipole approach in the large coherence length approximation. The Z0 boson contribution relevant at large dilepton invariant masses has been included. We showed that the initial-state interactions cause a strong suppression at large pT, large dilepton masses and forward rapidities leading to a breakdown of QCD factorisation that can be verified by LHC measurements. The nuclear effects on the correlation function C(Δφ) in azimuthal angle Δφ between dilepton pair and a forward pion have been discussed as well. We predict a characteristic double-peak structure of C(Δφ) for very forward pions and large-mass dilepton pairs.

    • Drell-Yan pair production off nuclei is an ideal tool to test the cold nuclear effects occurring before a hard collision since no interaction in the final state is expected, neither energy loss or absorption. We present for the first time a comprehensive study of the nucleus-to-nucleon production ratio (the nuclear modification factor) within the color dipole approach using the Green function formalism which naturally incorporates for the color transparency and quantum coherence effects. We study a different onset of nuclear shadowing in various kinematical regions. At large values of the Feynman variable xF and dilepton invariant mass M we include also a suppression factor due to restrictions caused by the energy conservation induced by multiple initial state interactions (ISI effects). We present a variety of predictions for the nuclear suppression as a function of xF and M that can be verified by experiments at RHIC and LHC. The mixing of coherence effects with ISI effects can be eliminated going to large values of the dilepton invariant mass. Then predictions for the nuclear suppression is a direct manifestation for the onset of net ISI effects that can be verified by the future measurements.

  • 2017
  • In: The international journal of behavioral nutrition and physical activity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1479-5868. ; 14:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The prominence of sedentary behavior research in health science has grown rapidly. With this growth there is increasing urgency for clear, common and accepted terminology and definitions. Such standardization is difficult to achieve, especially across multi-disciplinary researchers, practitioners, and industries. The Sedentary Behavior Research Network (SBRN) undertook a Terminology Consensus Project to address this need.First, a literature review was completed to identify key terms in sedentary behavior research. These key terms were then reviewed and modified by a Steering Committee formed by SBRN. Next, SBRN members were invited to contribute to this project and interested participants reviewed and provided feedback on the proposed list of terms and draft definitions through an online survey. Finally, a conceptual model and consensus definitions (including caveats and examples for all age groups and functional abilities) were finalized based on the feedback received from the 87 SBRN member participants who responded to the original invitation and survey.Consensus definitions for the terms physical inactivity, stationary behavior, sedentary behavior, standing, screen time, non-screen-based sedentary time, sitting, reclining, lying, sedentary behavior pattern, as well as how the terms bouts, breaks, and interruptions should be used in this context are provided. It is hoped that the definitions resulting from this comprehensive, transparent, and broad-based participatory process will result in standardized terminology that is widely supported and adopted, thereby advancing future research, interventions, policies, and practices related to sedentary behaviors.
