  • Shape evolution in even-mass 98-104Zr isotopes via lifetime measurements using the γ γ-coincidence technique
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 59:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Zirconium (Z = 40) isotopic chain has attracted interest for more than four decades. The abrupt lowering of the energy of the first 2(+) state and the increase in the transition strength B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+) ) going from Zr-98 to Zr-100 has been the first example of "quantum phase transition" in nuclear shapes, which has few equivalents in the nuclear chart. Although a multitude of experiments have been performed to measure nuclear properties related to nuclear shapes and collectivity in the region, none of the measured lifetimes were obtained using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method in the gamma gamma-coincidence mode where a gate on the direct feeding transition of the state of interest allows a strict control of systematical errors. This work reports the results of lifetime measurements for the first yrast excited states in Zr98-104 carried out to extract reduced transition probabilities. The new lifetime values in gamma gamma-coincidence and gamma-single mode are compared with the results of former experiments. Recent predictions of the Interacting Boson Model with Configuration Mixing, the Symmetry Conserving Configuration Mixing model based on the Hartree-Fock- Bogoliubov approach and the Monte Carlo Shell Model are presented and compared with the experimental data.

  • Quadrupole collectivity in Ca-42 from low-energy Coulomb excitation with AGATA
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 97:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ACoulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca-42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. gamma rays from excited states in Ca-42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca-42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 2(1)(+) and 2(2)(+) states, were determined using the least-squares code GOSIA. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 0(1),(+)(2) and 2(1,2)(+) states, as well as triaxiality for 0(1,2)(+) states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca-42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca-42.

  • Superdeformed and Triaxial States in Ca-42
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 117:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Shape parameters of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca-42 were determined from E2 matrix elements measured in the first low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed with AGATA. The picture of two coexisting structures is well reproduced by new state-of-the-art large-scale shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. Experimental evidence for superdeformation of the band built on 0(2)(+) has been obtained and the role of triaxiality in the A similar to 40 mass region is discussed. Furthermore, the potential of Coulomb excitation as a tool to study superdeformation has been demonstrated for the first time.

  • Pygmy dipole resonance in Ce-140 via inelastic scattering of O-17
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW C. - 2469-9985. ; 93:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma decay from the high-lying states of Ce-140 excited via inelastic scattering of O-17 at a bombarding energy of 340 MeV was measured using the high-resolution AGATA-demonstrator array in coincidence with scattered ions detected in two segmented Delta E-E silicon detectors. Angular distributions of scattered ions and emitted gamma rays were measured, as well as their differential cross sections. The excitation of 1(-) states below the neutron separation energy is similar to the one obtained in reactions with the alpha isoscalar probe. The comparison between the experimental differential cross sections and the corresponding predictions using the distorted-wave Born approximation allowed us to extract the isoscalar component of identified 1(-) pygmy states. For this analysis the form factor obtained by folding microscopically calculated transition densities and optical potentials was used.

  • Pygmy dipole resonance in Sn-124 populated by inelastic scattering of O-17
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 738, s. 519-523
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma decay from the high-lying states of Sn-124 was measured using the inelastic scattering of O-17 at 340 MeV. The emitted gamma rays were detected with high resolution with the AGATA demonstrator array and the scattered ions were detected in two segmented Delta E-E silicon telescopes. The angular distribution was measured both for the gamma rays and the scattered O-17 ions. An accumulation of E1 strength below the particle threshold was found and compared with previous data obtained with (gamma, gamma') and (alpha, alpha'gamma) reactions. The present results of elastic scattering, and excitation of E2 and E1 states were analysed using the DWBA approach. From this comprehensive description the isoscalar component of the 1-excited states was extracted. The obtained values are based on the comparison of the data with DWBA calculations including a form factor deduced using a microscopic transition density.

  • High-spin structure in K-40
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 86:5, s. 054320-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states of K-40 have been populated in the fusion-evaporation reaction C-12(Si-30,np)K-40 and studied by means of gamma-ray spectroscopy techniques using one triple-cluster detector of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Several states with excitation energy up to 8 MeV and spin up to 10(-) have been discovered. These states are discussed in terms of J = 3 and T = 0 neutron-proton hole pairs. Shell-model calculations in a large model space have shown good agreement with the experimental data for most of the energy levels. The evolution of the structure of this nucleus is here studied as a function of excitation energy and angular momentum.

  • Spectroscopy of the neutron-rich actinide nucleus U-240 following multinucleon-transfer reactions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 92:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Nuclear structure information for the neutron-rich actinide nuclei is important since it is the benchmark for theoretical models that provide predictions for the heaviest nuclei. Purpose: gamma-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich heavy nuclei in the actinide region. Method: Multinucleon-transfer reactions in Zn-70 + U-238 and Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in two experiments performed at the INFN Legnaro, Italy. In the Zn-70 experiment the high-resolution HPGe Clover Array (CLARA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was employed. In the Xe-136 experiment the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was used in combination with PRISMA and the Detector Array for Multinucleon Transfer Ejectiles (DANTE). Results: The ground-state band (g.s. band) of U-240 was measured up to the 20(+) level and a tentative assignment was made up to the (24(+)) level. Results from gamma gamma coincidence and from particle coincidence analyses are shown. Moments of inertia (MoI) show a clear upbend. Evidence for an extended first negative-parity band of U-240 is found. Conclusions: A detailed comparison with latest calculations shows best agreement with cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations for the g.s. band properties. The negative-parity band shows the characteristics of a K-pi = 0 band based on an octupole vibration.

  • Isospin Character of Low-Lying Pygmy Dipole States in Pb-208 via Inelastic Scattering of O-17 Ions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 113:1, s. 012501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The properties of pygmy dipole states in Pb-208 were investigated using the Pb-208(O-17, O-17'gamma) reaction at 340 MeV and measuring the gamma decay with high resolution with the AGATA demonstrator array. Cross sections and angular distributions of the emitted gamma rays and of the scattered particles were measured. The results are compared with (gamma, gamma') and (p, p') data. The data analysis with the distorted wave Born approximation approach gives a good description of the elastic scattering and of the inelastic excitation of the 2(+) and 3(-) states. For the dipole transitions a form factor obtained by folding a microscopically calculated transition density was used for the first time. This has allowed us to extract the isoscalar component of the 1(-) excited states from 4 to 8 MeV.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The level structure of the neutron-rich Cu-69, Cu-71, and Cu-73 isotopes has been investigated by means of multinucleon transfer reactions. The experiment was performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using the AGATA Demonstrator array coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. Lifetimes of excited states in Cu nuclei were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The resulting electromagnetic matrix elements for transitions from excited states in Cu-69,Cu-71,Cu-73 nuclei are used to assess the collective or single-particle character of these states. The results are compared with predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations, giving further insight into the evolution of the proton pf shell as neutrons fill the 1g(9/2) orbital.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW C. - 2469-9985. ; 93:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detailed spectroscopic information on the N similar to 82 nuclei is necessary to benchmark shell-model calculations in the region. The nuclear structure above long-lived isomers in Xe-134 is investigated after multinucleon transfer (MNT) and actinide fission. Xenon-134 was populated as (i) a transfer product in Xe-136 + U-238 and Xe-136 + Pb-208 MNT reactions and (ii) as a fission product in the Xe-136 + U-238 reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA). Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of beamlike transfer products with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The Xe-136 + Pt-198 MNT reaction was studied with the gamma-ray spectrometer GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas detector array Compact Heavy Ion Counter (CHICO). Several high-spin states in Xe-134 on top of the two long-lived isomers are discovered based on gamma gamma-coincidence relationships and information on the gamma-ray angular distributions as well as excitation energies from the total kinetic energy loss and fission fragments. The revised level scheme of Xe-134 is extended up to an

  • Isomers and high-spin structures in the N=81 isotones Xe-135 and Ba-137
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW C. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9985. ; 95:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high-spin structures and isomers of the N = 81 isotones Xe-135 and Ba-137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe-136+ U-238 and (ii) Xe-136+ Pb-208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (iii) in the Xe-136+ Pt-198 MNT reaction employing the gamma-ray array GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iv) via a B-11+ Te-130 fusion-evaporation reaction with the HORUS gamma-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes of Xe-135 and Ba-137 are considerably extended to higher energies. The 2058-keV (19/2(-)) state in Xe-135 is identified as an isomer, closing a gap in the systematics along the N = 81 isotones. Its half-life is measured to be 9.0(9) ns, corresponding to a reduced transition probability of B(E2,19/2(-) -> 15/2(-)) = 0.52(6) W.u. The experimentally deduced reduced transition probabilities of the isomeric states are compared to shell-model predictions. Latest shell-model calculations reproduce the experimental findings generally well and provide guidance to the interpretation of the new levels.

  • Transition probabilities in neutron-rich Se-80,Se-82 and the role of the nu g(9/2) orbital
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 97:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transition probabilities of intermediate-spin yrast and non-yrast excitations in Se-80,Se-82 were investigated in a recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) experiment performed at the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The Cologne Plunger device for deep inelastic scattering was used for the RDDS technique and was combined with the AGATA Demonstrator array for the gamma-ray detection and coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer for an event-by-event particle identification. In Se-80, the level lifetimes of the yrast (6(1)(+)) and (8(1)(+)) states and of a non-yrast band feeding the yrast 4(1)(+) state are determined. A spin and parity assignment of the head of this sideband is discussed based on the experimental results and supported by large-scale shell-model calculations. In Se-82, the level lifetimes of the yrast 6(1)(+) state and the yrare 4(2)(+) state and lifetime limits of the yrast (10(1)(+)) state and of the 5(1)(-) state are determined. Although the experimental results contain large uncertainties, they are interpreted with care in terms of large-scale shell-model calculations using the effective interactions JUN45 and jj44b. The excited states' wave functions are investigated and discussed with respect to the role of the neutron g(9/2) orbital.

These nuclei were populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction by bombarding a U-238 target with a beam of Ni-64. • Light and heavy transfer products in Xe-136+U-238 multinucleon transfer reactions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 92:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Multinucleon transfer reactions (MNT) are a competitive tool to populate exotic neutron-rich nuclei in a wide region of nuclei, where other production methods have severe limitations or cannot be used at all. Purpose: Experimental information on the yields of MNT reactions in comparison with theoretical calculations are necessary to make predictions for the production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. It is crucial to determine the fraction of MNT reaction products which are surviving neutron emission or fission at the high excitation energy after the nucleon exchange. Method: Multinucleon transfer reactions in Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in a high-resolution gamma-ray/particle coincidence experiment. The large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been employed. Beamlike reaction products after multinucleon transfer in the Xe region were identified and selected with the PRISMA spectrometer. Coincident particles were tagged by multichannel plate detectors placed at the grazing angle of the targetlike recoils inside the scattering chamber. Results: Mass yields have been extracted and compared with calculations based on the GRAZING model for MNT reactions. Kinematic coincidences between the binary reaction products, i.e., beamlike and targetlike nuclei, were exploited to obtain population yields for nuclei in the actinide region and compared to x-ray yields measured by AGATA. Conclusions: No sizable yield of actinide nuclei beyond Z = 93 is found to perform nuclear structure investigations. In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy is feasible for few-neutron transfer channels in U and the -2p channel populating Th isotopes.

  • Measurement of the sign of the spectroscopic quadrupole moment for the 2(1)(+) state in Se-70: No evidence for oblate shape
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 98:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a method whereby molecular and atomic ions are independently selected, an isobarically pure beam of Se-70 ions was postaccelerated to an energy of 206 MeV using REX-ISOLDE. Coulomb-excitation yields for states in the beam and target nuclei were deduced by recording deexcitation gamma rays in the highly segmented MINIBALL gamma-ray spectrometer in coincidence with scattered particles in a silicon detector. At these energies, the Coulomb-excitation yield for the first 2(+) state is expected to be strongly sensitive to the sign of the spectroscopic quadrupole moment through the nuclear reorientation effect. Experimental evidence is presented here for a prolate shape for the first 2(+) state in Se-70, reopening the question over whether there are, as reported earlier, deformed oblate shapes near to the ground state in the light selenium isotopes.

Six new E1 transitions have been found in the nucleus Ba-125, suggesting a significant role of octupole correlations in the origin of its parity doublets. The J(pi) = 3(-) level of the nucleus Ba-124 has been identified for the first time. Its excitation energy is in very good agreement with a prediction based on a microscopic model including octupole interactions.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW C. - 2469-9985. ; 93:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We performed a gamma-particle coincidence experiment for the Ni-60 + Sn-116 system to investigate whether the population of the two-neutron pickup channel leading to Ni-62 is mainly concentrated in the ground-state transition, as has been found in a previous work [D. Montanari et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 052501 (2014)]. The experiment has been performed by employing the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer coupled to the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) demonstrator. The strength distribution of excited states corresponding to the inelastic, one-and two-neutron transfer channels has been extracted. We found that in the two-neutron transfer channel the strength to excited states corresponds to a fraction (less than 24%) of the total, consistent with the previously obtained results that the 2n channel is dominated by the ground-state to ground-state transition.

  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica B. - 0587-4254 .- 1509-5770. ; 36:4, s. 1313-1322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The near-yrast states of Mo-101(42)59 and Ru-103,4(44)59,60 have been studied following their population via heavy-ion multinucleon transfer reactions between a Xe-136 beam and a thin, self-supporting Mo-100 target. The ground state sequence in Ru-104 can be understood as demonstrating a simple evolution from a quasi-vibrational structure at lower spins to statically deformed, quasi-rotational excitation involving the population of a pair of low-Omega h(11/2) neutron orbitals. The effect of the decoupled h(11/2) orbital on this vibration-to-rotational evolution is demonstrated by an extension of the "E-GOS" prescription to include odd-A nuclei. The experimental results are also compared with self-consistent Total Routhian Surface calculations which also highlight the polarising role of the highly aligned neutron h(11/2) orbital in these nuclei.

  • Wobbling phonon excitations, coexisting with normal deformed structures in Lu-163
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - 0375-9474. ; 703:1-2, s. 3-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wobbling is a rotational mode unique to a triaxial body. The Lu-Hf isotopes with N similar to 94 at high spin provide a possible region of nuclei with pronounced triaxiality. We have investigated Lu-163 through the fusion-evaporation reaction La-139(Si-29,5n)Lu-163 with a beam energy of 152 MeV. Three excited bands decaying into the known, presumably triaxial, superdeformed (TSD) band built on the i(13/2) proton orbital are observed. The electromagnetic properties of the connecting transitions from the two strongest populated excited TSD bands have been investigated. New particle-rotor calculations in which one i(13/2) quasiproton is coupled to the core of triaxial shape produce a variety of bands, whose properties can clearly be interpreted either as "wobbling" or "cranking" motion of the core. Evidence for the assignment of the excited TSD bands as one, and possibly even two wobbling phonon modes built on the yrast TSD band in Lu-163 is given. These triaxial bands coexist with bands built on quasiparticle excitations in the normal deformed (ND) minimum for which new data are also presented.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW C. - 2469-9985. ; 95:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lifetimes of the 4(1)(+) states in Fe-62,Fe-64 and the 11/2(1)(-) states in Co-61,Co-63 and Mn-59 were measured at the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) facility by using the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) and the large-acceptance variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++). The states were populated through multinucleon transfer reactions with a U-238 beam impinging on a Ni-64 target, and lifetimes in the picosecond range were measured by using the recoil distance Doppler shift method. The data show an increase of collectivity in the iron isotopes approaching N = 40. The reduction of the subshell gap between the nu 2p(1/2) and nu 1g(9/2) orbitals leads to an increased population of the quasi-SU(3) pair (nu 1g(9/2), nu 2d(5/2)), which causes an increase in quadrupole collectivity. This is not observed for the cobalt isotopes withN < 40 for which the neutron subshell gap is larger due to the repulsive monopole component of the tensor nucleon-nucleon interaction. The extracted experimental B(E2) values are compared with large-scale shell-model calculations and with beyond-mean-field calculations with the Gogny D1S interaction. A good agreement between calculations and experimental values is found, and the results demonstrate in particular the spectroscopic quality of the Lenzi, Nowacki, Poves, and Sieja (LNPS) shell-model interaction.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin terminating bands in heavy nuclei were first identified in nuclei around Er-158(90). While examples of special terminating states have been identified in a number of erbium isotopes, almost nothing is known about the states lying beyond band termination. In the present work the high-spin structure of Er-157 has been studied using the Gammasphere spectrometer. The subject of triaxial superdeformation and 'wobbling' modes in Lu nuclei has rightly attracted a great deal of attention. Very recently, four strongly or superdeformed (SD) sequences have been observed in Hf-174 and ultimate cranker calculations predict, such structures may have significant triaxial deformation. We have performed two experiments in an attempt to verify the possible triaxial nature of these bands. A lifetime measurement was performed to confirm the large (and similar) deformation of the bands. In addition, a high-statistics, thin-target experiment was run to search for linking transitions between the SD bands and possible wobbling modes.

Very recently four strongly or superdeformed (SD) sequences have been observed in Hf-174, and cranking calculations using the Ultimate Cranker code predict that such structures may have significant triaxial deformation. We have performed two experiments in an attempt to verify the possible triaxial nature of these bands. A lifetime measurement was performed to confirm the large (and similar) deformation of the bands. In addition, a high-statistics, thin-target experiment took place to search for linking transitions between the SD bands, possible wobbling modes, and new SD band structures.

    • An experimental study of the lower fp-shell nuclei Sc-42,Sc-43 was performed via alpha pn and alpha p evaporation, respectively, from Ne-20 + Si-28 and Mg-24 + Mg-24 fusion-evaporation reactions. The experiments were conducted with the Gammasphere and Microball detector arrays. The level schemes of both nuclei have been extended considerably. Terminating states associated with the f(7/2)(n) and d(3/2)(-1)f(7/2)(n+1) configurations were identified in each nuclide and incorporated into detailed comparisons with neighboring nuclei and with shell model calculations. The energy differences between the terminating states provide a test of the sd-fp cross-shell interactions in these calculations.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The radioactive isotope In-107 was studied using sub-barrier Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. Two gamma rays were observed during the experiment, corresponding to the low-lying 11/2(+) and 3/2(-)states. The reduced transition probability of the 11/2(+) state was determined with the semiclassical Coulomb excitation code GOSIA2. The result is discussed in comparison to large-scale shell-model calculations, previous unified-model calculations, and earlier Coulomb excitation measurements in the odd-mass In isotopes. • The radioactive isotope Sn-107 was studied using Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. This is the lightest odd-Sn nucleus examined using this technique. The reduced transition probability of the lowest-lying 3/2(+) state was measured and is compared to shell-model predictions based on several sets of single-neutron energies relative to Sn-100. Similar to the transition probabilities for the 2(+) states in the neutron-deficient even-even Sn nuclei, the measured value is underestimated by shell-model calculations. Part of the strength may be recovered by considering the ordering of the d(5/2) and g(7/2) single-neutron states.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A set of B(E2) values for the low-lying excited states in the radioactive isotope Sn-109 were deduced from a Coulomb excitation experiment. The 2.87-MeV/u radioactive beam was produced at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN and was incident on a secondary Ni-58 target. The B(E2) values were determined using the known 2(+) -> 0(+) reduced transition probability in Ni-58 as normalization with the semiclassical Coulomb excitation code GOSIA2. The transition probabilities are compared to shell-model calculations based on a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction and the predictions of a simple core-excitation model. This measurement represents the first determination of multiple B(E2) values in a light Sn nucleus using the Coulomb excitation technique with low-energy radioactive beams. The results provide constraints for the single-neutron states relative to Sn-100 and also indicate the importance of both single-neutron and collective excitations in the light Sn isotopes.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reduced transition probabilities between the first excited 2(+) state and the 0(+) ground state, B(E2; 0(+) -> 2(+)), have been measured in Sn-106,Sn-108,Sn-110 using sub-barrier Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics at REX-ISOLDE. The results are, B(E2;0(+) -> 2(+)) = 0.220(22),0.226(17), and 0.228(32) e(2)b(2), for Sn-110, Sn-108, and Sn-106, respectively. The results for Sn-106,Sn-108 are preliminary. De-excitation gamma-rays were detected by the MINIBALL Ge-array. The B(E2) reveals detailed information about the nuclear wave function. A shell model prediction based on an effective CD-Bonn interaction in the nu(0g(7/2),2s, 1d, 0h(11/2)) model space using e(eff)(nu) =1.0 e follows the experimental values for the neutron rich Sn isotopes, but fails to reproduce the results presented here.

  • The Toronto Postliver Transplantation Hepatocellular Carcinoma Recurrence Calculator : A Machine Learning Approach
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Liver transplantation. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1527-6465 .- 1527-6473. ; 28:4, s. 593-602
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Liver transplantation (LT) listing criteria for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain controversial. To optimize the utility of limited donor organs, this study aims to leverage machine learning to develop an accurate posttransplantation HCC recurrence prediction calculator. Patients with HCC listed for LT from 2000 to 2016 were identified, with 739 patients who underwent LT used for modeling. Data included serial imaging, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), locoregional therapies, treatment response, and posttransplantation outcomes. We compared the CoxNet (regularized Cox regression), survival random forest, survival support vector machine, and DeepSurv machine learning algorithms via the mean cross-validated concordance index. We validated the selected CoxNet model by comparing it with other currently available recurrence risk algorithms on a held-out test set (AFP, Model of Recurrence After Liver Transplant [MORAL], and Hazard Associated with liver Transplantation for Hepatocellular Carcinoma [HALT-HCC score]). The developed CoxNet-based recurrence prediction model showed a satisfying overall concordance score of 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.64-0.84). In comparison, the recalibrated risk algorithms' concordance scores were as follows: AFP score 0.64 (outperformed by the CoxNet model, 1-sided 95% CI, >0.01; P = 0.04) and MORAL score 0.64 (outperformed by the CoxNet model 1-sided 95% CI, >0.02; P = 0.03). The recalibrated HALT-HCC score performed well with a concordance of 0.72 (95% CI, 0.63-0.81) and was not significantly outperformed (1-sided 95% CI, >= 0.05; P = 0.29). Developing a comprehensive posttransplantation HCC recurrence risk calculator using machine learning is feasible and can yield higher accuracy than other available risk scores. Further research is needed to confirm the utility of machine learning in this setting.

  • High-angular-momentum structures in Zn-64
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 69, s. 1-034330
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-angular-momentum states in Zn-64 were populated in the Ca-40(Si-28,4p) reaction at a beam energy of 122 MeV. Evaporated, light, charged particles were identified by the Microball, while gamma rays were detected using the Gammasphere array. The main focus of this paper is on two strongly coupled, collective bands. The yrast band, which was previously known, has been linked to lower-lying states establishing the excitation energies and angular momenta of in-band states for the first time. The newly identified excited band decays to the yrast band but firm angular-momentum assignments could not be made. In order to interpret these structures cranked-Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations have been performed. The calculations have been extended to account for the distribution of nucleons within a configuration. The yrast collective band is interpreted as based on the pi(f(7/2))(-1)(p(3/2)f(5/2))(2)(g(9/2))(1)nu(p(3/2)f(5/2))(4)(g(9/2))(2) configuration. There are several possible interpretations of the second band but it is difficult to distinguish between the different possibilities.

  • Return of collective rotation in Er-157 and Er-158 at ultrahigh spin
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 98:1, s. 1-012501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new frontier of discrete-line gamma-ray spectroscopy at ultrahigh spin has been opened in the rare-earth nuclei Er-157,Er-158. Four rotational structures, displaying high moments of inertia, have been identified, which extend up to spin similar to 65h and bypass the band-terminating states in these nuclei which occur at similar to 45h. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations suggest that these structures arise from well-deformed triaxial configurations that lie in a valley of favored shell energy which also includes the triaxial strongly deformed bands in Lu161-167.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949. ; T125, s. 212-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The level structure of Nd-140(80) has been established up to spin 48 by in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy using the Zr-96(Ca-48, 4n) reaction. High-fold gamma-ray coincidences were measured with the EUROBALL spectrometer. Twelve new rotational bands have been discovered at high spins, showing the change from a spherical single-particle behaviour at low spins to a deformed regime with stable triaxiality at high spins. Possible configurations are assigned to the observed bands on the basis of configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Pb-196 have been populated in two different heavy-ion-induced reactions using thin and Au-backed targets, respectively. Gamma-ray coincidences were measured using the EUROBALL spectrometer array. Five new magnetic-rotational bands have been found. The previously known four bands have been extended and some of their levels have been reordered. With one exception, all the bands have been connected to lower-lying states and excitation energies, spins and parities have been determined. From the systematic properties of the bands and from comparison to tilted-axis cranking calculations, arguments for configuration assignments to the bands are derived. It is suggested that the bands are based on proton 11(-) and 8(+) particle states coupled to various neutron-hole excitations.
