  • The GALAH+ survey : Third data release
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 506:1, s. 150-201

    • The ensemble of chemical element abundance measurements for stars, along with precision distances and orbit properties, provides high-dimensional data to study the evolution of the Milky Way. With this third data release of the Galactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) survey, we publish 678 423 spectra for 588 571 mostly nearby stars (81.2 per cent of stars are within <2 kpc), observed with the HERMES spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This release (hereafter GALAH+ DR3) includes all observations from GALAH Phase 1 (bright, main, and faint survey, 70 per cent), K2-HERMES (17 per cent), TESS-HERMES (5 per cent), and a subset of ancillary observations (8 per cent) including the bulge and >75 stellar clusters. We derive stellar parameters Teff, log g, [Fe/H], vmic, vbroad, and vrad using our modified version of the spectrum synthesis code Spectroscopy Made Easy (sme) and 1D marcs model atmospheres. We break spectroscopic degeneracies in our spectrum analysis with astrometry from Gaia DR2 and photometry from 2MASS. We report abundance ratios [X/Fe] for 30 different elements (11 of which are based on non-LTE computations) covering five nucleosynthetic pathways. We describe validations for accuracy and precision, flagging of peculiar stars/measurements and recommendations for using our results. Our catalogue comprises 65 per cent dwarfs, 34 per cent giants, and 1 per cent other/unclassified stars. Based on unflagged chemical composition and age, we find 62 per cent young low-α, 9 per cent young high-α, 27 per cent old high-α, and 2 per cent stars with [Fe/H] ≤ −1. Based on kinematics, 4 per cent are halo stars. Several Value-Added-Catalogues, including stellar ages and dynamics, updated after Gaia eDR3, accompany this release and allow chrono-chemodynamic analyses, as we showcase.

  • Two main genetic pathways lead to the transformation of chronic lymphocytic leukemia to Richter syndrome
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 0006-4971 .- 1528-0020. ; 122:15, s. 2673-2682
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Richter syndrome (RS) occurs in up to 15% of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Although RS, usually represented by the histologic transformation to a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), is associated with a very poor outcome, especially when clonally related to the preexisting CLL, the mechanisms leading to RS have not been clarified. To better understand the pathogenesis of RS, we analyzed a series of cases including 59 RS, 28 CLL phase of RS, 315 CLL, and 127 de novo DLBCL. RS demonstrated a genomic complexity intermediate between CLL and DLBCL. Cell-cycle deregulation via inactivation of TP53 and of CDKN2A was a main mechanism in the histologic transformation from CLL phase, being present in approximately one half of the cases, and affected the outcome of the RS patients. A second major subgroup was characterized by the presence of trisomy 12 and comprised one third of the cases. Although RS shared some of the lesions seen in de novo DLBCL, its genomic profile was clearly separate. The CLL phase preceding RS had not a generalized increase in genomic complexity compared with untransformed CLL, but it presented clear differences in the frequency of specific genetic lesions.

  • A new system for naming ribosomal proteins.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Current Opinion in Structural Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-033X .- 0959-440X. ; 24, s. 165-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A system for naming ribosomal proteins is described that the authors intend to use in the future. They urge others to adopt it. The objective is to eliminate the confusion caused by the assignment of identical names to ribosomal proteins from different species that are unrelated in structure and function. In the system proposed here, homologous ribosomal proteins are assigned the same name, regardless of species. It is designed so that new names are similar enough to old names to be easily recognized, but are written in a format that unambiguously identifies them as 'new system' names.

  • Developmentally regulated volatiles geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol attract a soil arthropod to Streptomyces bacteria promoting spore dispersal
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Microbiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2058-5276.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Volatile compounds emitted by bacteria are often sensed by other organisms as odours, but their ecological roles are poorly understood1,2. Well-known examples are the soil-smelling terpenoids geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB)3,4, which humans and various animals sense at extremely low concentrations5,6. The conservation of geosmin biosynthesis genes among virtually all species of Streptomyces bacteria (and genes for the biosynthesis of 2-MIB in about 50%)7,8, suggests that the volatiles provide a selective advantage for these soil microbes. We show, in the present study, that these volatiles mediate interactions of apparent mutual benefit between streptomycetes and springtails (Collembola). In field experiments, springtails were attracted to odours emitted by Streptomyces colonies. Geosmin and 2-MIB in these odours induce electrophysiological responses in the antennae of the model springtail Folsomia candida, which is also attracted to both compounds. Moreover, the genes for geosmin and 2-MIB synthases are under the direct control of sporulation-specific transcription factors, constraining emission of the odorants to sporulating colonies. F. candida feeds on the Streptomyces colonies and disseminates spores both via faecal pellets and through adherence to its hydrophobic cuticle. The results indicate that geosmin and 2-MIB production is an integral part of the sporulation process, completing the Streptomyces life cycle by facilitating dispersal of spores by soil arthropods.

  • Light-induced electrolyte improvement in cobalt tris(bipyridine)-mediated dye-sensitized solar cells
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 7:33, s. 19495-19505
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lithium-ion-free tris(2,2′-bipyridine) Co(ii/iii)-mediated electrolytes have previously been proposed for long-term stable dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Such redox systems also offer an impressive DSSC performance improvement under light soaking exposure, manifested by an increase in photocurrent and fill factor without the expense of decreasing photovoltage. Kinetic studies show that charge transfer and ion diffusion at the electrode/electrolyte interface are improved due to the light exposure. Control experiments reveal that the light effect is unambiguously associated with electrolyte components, [Co(bpy)3]3+ and the Lewis-base additive tert-butylpyridine (TBP). Electrochemical and spectroscopic investigation of the [Co(bpy)3]3+/TBP mixtures points out that the presence of TBP, which retards the electrolyte diffusion, however causes an irreversible redox reaction of [Co(bpy)3]3+ upon light exposure that improves the overall conductivity. This discovery not only provides a new strategy to mitigate the typical Jsc-Voc trade-off in Co(ii/iii)-mediated DSSCs but also highlights the importance of investigating the photochemistry of a photoelectrochemical system.

  • Impaired Myocardial Functional Reserve in Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus Without Coronary Artery Disease: Searching for the Possible Link With Congestive Heart Failure in the Myocardial Doppler in Diabetes (MYDID) Study II
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Hypertension. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0895-7061 .- 1941-7225. ; 19:8, s. 851-857
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Although the impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HTN) on myocardial function has recently been studied using tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE), the independent role of both conditions, and the influence of other risk factors on myocardial function has not been completely defined, particularly in absence of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of this study was to assess the myocardial functional reserve in patients with DM or HTN with apparently normal left ventricular (LV) systolic function. Methods: Standard and dobutamine stress echocardiography using TDE was performed in 128 subjects: 59 had DM, 20 had HTN, 27 had both DM and HTN (HTN + DM), and 22 subjects were controls (C). Subjects with known CAD and depressed LV function were excluded. In addition, standard two-dimensional and Doppler measurements, LV regional peak systolic (PSV), early (E') and late (A') diastolic velocities, strain (S%) and strain rate (SR), were assessed at rest and peak stress. Results: The LV mass did not differ, although relative wall thickness was significantly higher in subjects with HTN + DM and HTN. The PSV did not differ at rest but was lowest in subjects with HTN + DM at peak stress. The E' wave velocity was significantly lower in subjects with HTN + DM both at rest and during peak stress, as were S% and SR. Conclusions: The addition of DM to HTN has a negative effect on LV systolic and diastolic functions. A depressed myocardial functional reserve might be postulated as one of the pathophysiologic mechanisms for the excessive occurrence of congestive heart failure in patients with DM or HTN.

  • Isolated Type 2 Diabetes mellitus Causes Myocardial Dysfunction That Becomes Worse in the Presence of Cardiovascular Diseases : Results of the Myocardial Doppler in Diabetes (MYDID): Study 1
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Cardiology. - : S. Karger AG. - 0008-6312 .- 1421-9751. ; 103:4, s. 189-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) often suffer disproportionately and have a worse outcome when burdened with cardiovascular complications compared with those without DM. A specific heart muscle disease reportedly caused by DM per se may explain this. We sought to investigate whether an echo Doppler diagnosis of such a myocardial disease is clinically relevant in DM with or without coexistent coronary artery disease (CAD) and/or hypertension ( HTN). Subjects and Methods: Two hundred subjects (127 males, 73 females, 56 +/- 10 years) including controls (n=23), patients with HTN (n=20), CAD (n=35), uncomplicated DM (n=59), DM+HTN (n=27), DM+ CAD (n=16) and DM+CAD+HTN (n=20) underwent tissue Doppler-enhanced dobutamine stress echocardiography. Myocardial function was assessed by measuring left ventricular myocardial peak systolic velocity (PSV) and early diastolic velocity at rest and during peak stress, besides measurements of standard Doppler variables. Results: Average left ventricular PSV at rest was significantly lower in CAD (4.7 +/- 1.5) compared with controls (5.7 center dot +/- 1.2) and in DM+CAD+HTN (4.6 +/- 1.4) compared with DM (5.6 +/- 1.3; all p < 0.05). During peak stress, lower PSV persisted in CAD (9.5 +/- 3.1) and DM+CAD+HTN (8.1 +/- 2.7), while appearing de novo in DM (11.3 +/- 2.6) and HTN (11.0 +/- 2.3) unlike in the controls (12.5 +/- 2.5; all p < 0.001). When pooled together, DM subjects with CAD and/or HTN or both had significantly lower PSV (9.1 +/- 2.7) than those without (10.0 +/- 2.8; p < 0.001). Early diastolic velocity response was equally lower in both groups compared with the controls. Conclusion: The results suggest that dobutamine stress unmasks myocardial functional disturbances caused by uncomplicated DM. The discrete disturbances become quantitatively more pronounced in the presence of coexistent cardiovascular diseases.

  • Microalbuminuria and Left Ventricular Functions in Type 2 Diabetes : A Quantitative Assessment by Stress Echocardiography in the Myocardial Doppler in Diabetes (MYDID) Study III
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cardiology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0167-5273 .- 1874-1754. ; 41:6, s. 363-369
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. Left ventricular (LV) function might be altered in type 2 diabetes (DM) and microalbuminuria (MA) may accentuate the abnormalities. We sought to investigate whether additional LV dysfunction could be unmasked using tissue Doppler (TVE)-enhanced dobutamine stress echocardiography (TVE-DSE) in patients with DM+MA. Methods. Twenty seven DM subjects with MA, (DM+MA), 31 DM subjects without MA (DM-MA), and 13 Controls were evaluated using TVE-DSE. LV basal peak systolic (PSV), early (E') and late (A') diastolic velocities (cm/sec) at rest and peak stress were post-processed. LV filling pressure was assessed using E/E'ratio. Results. PSV and E'velocity at peak stress in the respective three groups were 13.7±1.0, 10.1±1.1, 10.0±1.2 for PSV; and 10.0±1.6, 5.0±1.4, 4.8±1.4 for E' (p < 0.001 for controls vs. both groups). E/E' at rest was 7.9±0.7 in the controls, 10.8±2.4 in DM-MA, and 11.0±2.2 in DM+MA (p < 0.01 Controls vs. both the DM groups). Conclusions. Patients with DM+MA do not have additional LV regional systolic and diastolic dysfunctions compared with DM-MA, as revealed by TVE-DSE, when controlled for glycemia levels, lipids, and treatment strategies.

  • Mechanistic Investigation of Dimethylmercury Formation Mediated by a Sulfide Mineral Surface
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry A. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1089-5639 .- 1520-5215. ; 125:24, s. 5397-5405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mercury (Hg) pollution is a global environmental problem. The abiotic formation of dimethylmercury (DMeHg) from monomethylmercury (MMeHg) may account for a large portion of DMeHg in oceans. Previous experimental work has shown that abiotic formation of DMeHg from MMeHg can be facilitated by reduced sulfur groups on sulfide mineral surfaces. In that work, a mechanism was proposed in which neighboring MMeHg moieties bound to sulfide sites on a mineral surface react through an SN2-type mechanism to form DMeHg and incorporate the remaining Hg atoms into the mineral surface. Here, we perform density functional theory calculations to explore the mechanisms of DMeHg formation on the 110 surface of a CdS(s) (hawleyite) nanoparticle. We show that coordination of MMeHg substituents to adjacent reduced sulfur groups protruding from the surface indeed facilitates DMeHg formation and that the reaction proceeds through direct transmethylation from one MMeHg substituent to another. Coordination of Hg by multiple S atoms provides a transition-state stabilization and activates a C–Hg bond for methyl transfer. In addition, solvation effects play an important role in the surface reconstruction of the nanoparticle and in decreasing the energetic barrier for DMeHg formation relative to the corresponding reaction in vacuo.

  • Combined APOGEE-GALAH stellar catalogues using the Cannon
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 513:1, s. 232-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • APOGEE and GALAH are two high resolution multi-object spectroscopic surveys that provide fundamental stellar parameters and multiple elemental abundance estimates for about half a million stars in the Milky Way. Both surveys observe in different wavelength regimes and use different data reduction pipelines leading to significant offsets and trends in stellar parameters and abundances for the common stars observed in both surveys. Such systematic differences/offsets in stellar parameters and abundances make it difficult to effectively utilize them to investigate Galactic abundance trends in spite of the unique advantage provided by their complementary sky coverage and different Milky Way components they observe. Hence, we use the Cannon data-driven method selecting a training set of 4418 common stars observed by both surveys. This enables the construction of two catalogues, one with the APOGEE-scaled and the other with the GALAH-scaled stellar parameters. Using repeat observations in APOGEE and GALAH, we find high precision in metallicity (∼0.02–0.4 dex) and alpha abundances (∼0.02–0.03 dex) for spectra with good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR > 80 for APOGEE and SNR > 40 for GALAH). We use open and globular clusters to validate our parameter estimates and find small scatter in metallicity (0.06 dex) and alpha abundances (0.03 dex) in APOGEE-scaled case. The final catalogues have been cross-matched with the Gaia EDR3 catalogue to enable their use to carry out detailed chemo-dynamic studies of the Milky Way from perspectives of APOGEE and GALAH.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quigley, P. A., M. Msghina, C. K. Govind, and H. L. Atwood. Visible evidence for differences in synaptic effectiveness with activity-dependent vesicular uptake and release of FM1-43. J. Neurophysiol. 81: 356–370, 1999. Activity-dependent uptake and release of the fluorescent probe FM1-43 were used to compare synaptic performance (rates of transmitter release and synaptic vesicle turnover) at different frequencies in phasic and tonic motor neurons innervating the crayfish leg extensor muscle and in the tonic motor neuron of the opener muscle. The phasic extensor motor neuron, which has a high quantal content of transmitter release, accumulated and released FM1-43 more rapidly than the tonic motor neuron, especially at low frequencies of stimulation. Individual bright spots appeared on the varicosities of the junctional terminals during stimulation in FM1-43; these spots corresponded to zones of immunostaining for the synaptic vesicle associated protein synaptotagmin, but they were larger and less numerous than synapses identified by electron microscopy and appear to represent one to several synapses with their associated clusters of synaptic vesicles. The number of bright spots observed on varicosities of the tonic terminal after stimulation at ≥20 Hz is generally similar to values for responding units ( n) calculated from binomial distributions derived from quantal analysis. At frequencies of ≤10 Hz, bright spots did not usually appear on tonic extensor varicosities, and the quantal release patterns were best fitted with Poisson distributions. Another tonic motor neuron, the excitor of the opener muscle, showed individual bright spots at lower frequencies of stimulation, consistent with its higher quantal output at these frequencies and corresponding with the binomial fits for quantal release distributions. In this axon, the number of distinctive bright spots increased with frequency in the 2- to 20-Hz range, indicating increased participation of synapses during frequency facilitation. In the tonic extensor neuron terminals, the brightness and the size of the individual spots increased with frequency, and new foci of dye uptake appeared at the edges of preexisting spots. Relative intensity change varied considerably among individual spots during dye loading at different frequencies. Similarly, individual spots on a single tonic terminal destained at different rates when stimulated after previous loading with FM1-43. These results suggest differential performance of individual synapses or small groups of synapses, some being more effective in transmitter release than others, as inferred from previous ultrastructural and quantal analysis studies. The large overall differences between phasic and tonic synapses suggest differential regulation of transmitter release at individual synapses in the two neurons.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. - 0018-9383. ; 53:7, s. 1559-1566
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Power consumption in liquid-crystal displays is analyzed by including frequent polarity reversals and duty-cycle control. A multistep voltage profile is proposed to reduce the power consumption of multiplexed and nonmultiplexed displays. The authors have also shown that the reduction in the power consumption can be achieved with a minimal increase in hardware complexity of the drive electronics.
