  • A first search for coincident gravitational waves and high energy neutrinos using LIGO, Virgo and ANTARES data from 2007
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1475-7516. ; :6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results of the first search for gravitational wave bursts associated with high energy neutrinos. Together, these messengers could reveal new, hidden sources that are not observed by conventional photon astronomy, particularly at high energy. Our search uses neutrinos detected by the underwater neutrino telescope ANTARES in its 5 line configuration during the period January - September 2007, which coincided with the fifth and first science runs of LIGO and Virgo, respectively. The LIGO-Virgo data were analysed for candidate gravitational-wave signals coincident in time and direction with the neutrino events. No significant coincident events were observed. We place limits on the density of joint high energy neutrino - gravitational wave emission events in the local universe, and compare them with densities of merger and core-collapse events.

  • Swift Follow-up Observations of Candidate Gravitational-wave Transient Events
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0067-0049 .- 1538-4365. ; 203:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first multi-wavelength follow-up observations of two candidate gravitational-wave (GW) transient events recorded by LIGO and Virgo in their 2009-2010 science run. The events were selected with low latency by the network of GW detectors (within less than 10 minutes) and their candidate sky locations were observed by the Swift observatory (within 12 hr). Image transient detection was used to analyze the collected electromagnetic data, which were found to be consistent with background. Off-line analysis of the GW data alone has also established that the selected GW events show no evidence of an astrophysical origin; one of them is consistent with background and the other one was a test, part of a "blind injection challenge." With this work we demonstrate the feasibility of rapid follow-ups of GW transients and establish the sensitivity improvement joint electromagnetic and GW observations could bring. This is a first step toward an electromagnetic follow-up program in the regime of routine detections with the advanced GW instruments expected within this decade. In that regime, multi-wavelength observations will play a significant role in completing the astrophysical identification of GW sources. We present the methods and results from this first combined analysis and discuss its implications in terms of sensitivity for the present and future instruments.

  • The characterization of Virgo data and its impact on gravitational-wave searches
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Classical and Quantum Gravity. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6382 .- 0264-9381. ; 29:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Between 2007 and 2010 Virgo collected data in coincidence with the LIGO and GEO gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. These data have been searched for GWs emitted by cataclysmic phenomena in the universe, by non-axisymmetric rotating neutron stars or from a stochastic background in the frequency band of the detectors. The sensitivity of GW searches is limited by noise produced by the detector or its environment. It is therefore crucial to characterize the various noise sources in a GW detector. This paper reviews the Virgo detector noise sources, noise propagation, and conversion mechanisms which were identified in the three first Virgo observing runs. In many cases, these investigations allowed us to mitigate noise sources in the detector, or to selectively flag noise events and discard them from the data. We present examples from the joint LIGO-GEO-Virgo GW searches to show how well noise transients and narrow spectral lines have been identified and excluded from the Virgo data. We also discuss how detector characterization can improve the astrophysical reach of GW searches.

  • Parameter estimation for compact binary coalescence signals with the first generation gravitational-wave detector network
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 88:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compact binary systems with neutron stars or black holes are one of the most promising sources for ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. Gravitational radiation encodes rich information about source physics; thus parameter estimation and model selection are crucial analysis steps for any detection candidate events. Detailed models of the anticipated waveforms enable inference on several parameters, such as component masses, spins, sky location and distance, that are essential for new astrophysical studies of these sources. However, accurate measurements of these parameters and discrimination of models describing the underlying physics are complicated by artifacts in the data, uncertainties in the waveform models and in the calibration of the detectors. Here we report such measurements on a selection of simulated signals added either in hardware or software to the data collected by the two LIGO instruments and the Virgo detector during their most recent joint science run, including a "blind injection'' where the signal was not initially revealed to the collaboration. We exemplify the ability to extract information about the source physics on signals that cover the neutron-star and black-hole binary parameter space over the component mass range 1M(circle dot)-25M(circle dot) and the full range of spin parameters. The cases reported in this study provide a snapshot of the status of parameter estimation in preparation for the operation of advanced detectors.

  • Search for gravitational waves from binary black hole inspiral, merger, and ringdown in LIGO-Virgo data from 2009-2010
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 87:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a search for gravitational waves from the inspiral, merger and ringdown of binary black holes (BBH) with total mass between 25 and 100 solar masses, in data taken at the LIGO and Virgo observatories between July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010. The maximum sensitive distance of the detectors over this period for a (20, 20)M-circle dot coalescence was 300 Mpc. No gravitational wave signals were found. We thus report upper limits on the astrophysical coalescence rates of BBH as a function of the component masses for nonspinning components, and also evaluate the dependence of the search sensitivity on component spins aligned with the orbital angular momentum. We find an upper limit at 90% confidence on the coalescence rate of BBH with nonspinning components of mass between 19 and 28M(circle dot) of 3:3 x 10(-7) mergers Mpc(-3) yr(-1).

  • Einstein@Home all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in LIGO S5 data
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D (Particles, Fields, Gravitation and Cosmology). - 1550-2368. ; 87:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents results of an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency range [50, 1190] Hz and with frequency derivative range of similar to[-20, 1.1] x 10(-10) Hz s(-1) for the fifth LIGO science run (S5). The search uses a noncoherent Hough-transform method to combine the information from coherent searches on time scales of about one day. Because these searches are very computationally intensive, they have been carried out with the Einstein@Home volunteer distributed computing project. Postprocessing identifies eight candidate signals; deeper follow-up studies rule them out. Hence, since no gravitational wave signals have been found, we report upper limits on the intrinsic gravitational wave strain amplitude h(0). For example, in the 0.5 Hz-wide band at 152.5 Hz, we can exclude the presence of signals with h(0) greater than 7.6 x 10(-25) at a 90% confidence level. This search is about a factor 3 more sensitive than the previous Einstein@Home search of early S5 LIGO data.

  • Dependence on plasma shape and plasma fueling for small edge-localized mode regimes in TCV and ASDEX Upgrade
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 59:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved. Within the EUROfusion MST1 work package, a series of experiments has been conducted on AUG and TCV devices to disentangle the role of plasma fueling and plasma shape for the onset of small ELM regimes. On both devices, small ELM regimes with high confinement are achieved if and only if two conditions are fulfilled at the same time. Firstly, the plasma density at the separatrix must be large enough (ne,sep/nG ∼ 0.3), leading to a pressure profile flattening at the separatrix, which stabilizes type-I ELMs. Secondly, the magnetic configuration has to be close to a double null (DN), leading to a reduction of the magnetic shear in the extreme vicinity of the separatrix. As a consequence, its stabilizing effect on ballooning modes is weakened.

  • Single-cell RNA sequencing reveals molecular and functional platelet bias of aged haematopoietic stem cells
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 7, s. 11075-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aged haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) generate more myeloid cells and fewer lymphoid cells compared with young HSCs, contributing to decreased adaptive immunity in aged individuals. However, it is not known how intrinsic changes to HSCs and shifts in the balance between biased HSC subsets each contribute to the altered lineage output. Here, by analysing HSC transcriptomes and HSC function at the single-cell level, we identify increased molecular platelet priming and functional platelet bias as the predominant age-dependent change to HSCs, including a significant increase in a previously unrecognized class of HSCs that exclusively produce platelets. Depletion of HSC platelet programming through loss of the FOG-1 transcription factor is accompanied by increased lymphoid output. Therefore, increased platelet bias may contribute to the age-associated decrease in lymphopoiesis.

  • Development of tissue engineered ligaments with titanium spring reinforcement
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: RSC Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2046-2069. ; 6:100, s. 98536-98544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tissue engineering offers a promising alternative to the use of autografts in the treatment of ligament injuries. However, current approaches using only biodegradable materials have insufficient mechanical strength for load bearing applications. In this research, hybrid bio-artificial ligaments were fabricated using a combination of a titanium alloy spring and a fibrin gel/fibroblast construct. The ends of the ligament prosthesis were incorporated into brushite cement anchors to allow fusion with the host bone. Cell attachment to the titanium spring was examined using scanning electron microscopy and fluorescent staining of cells. The unreinforced constructs were observed to fail at the anchor-ligament junction, while the titanium spring reinforcement was found to assist in even transmission of the load to the ligament, and hence to provide a means of load sharing between the biological construct and the spring. As a result, the reinforced construct failed primarily in the soft tissue region. The good load distribution features from the mechanical data was attributed to the good cellular level adhesion to, and alignment along the coiling of, the length of the spring reinforcement. Incorporation of a biocompatible reinforcement in conjunction with a tissue engineered construct gave improved load distribution, reducing stress concentrations, and significantly increased the ultimate strength at failure. The results suggest that the hybrid approach used here shows promise in developing improved therapies for connective tissue injuries. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2016.

  • The interaction between predation and competition : a review and synthesis
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Ecology Letters. ; 5:2, s. 302-315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review discusses the interface between two of the most important types of interactions between species, interspecific competition and predation. Predation has been claimed to increase, decrease, or have little effect on, the strength, impact or importance of interspecific competition. There is confusion about both the meaning these terms and the likelihood of, and conditions required for, each of these outcomes. In this article we distinguish among three measures of the influence of predation on competitive outcomes: short-term per capita consumption or growth rates, long-term changes in density and the probability of competitive coexistence. We then outline various theoretical mechanisms that can lead to qualitatively, distinct effects. of predators,. The qualitative effect of predators can depend both on the mechanism of competition and on the definition of competitive strength/impact. In assessing the empirical literature, we ask: (1) What definitions of competitive strength/impact have been assumed? (2) Does strong evidence exist to support one or more of the possible mechanisms that can produce a given outcome? (3) Do biases in the choice of organism or manipulation exist, and are they, likely, to have influenced the conclusions reached? We conclude by discussing several unanswered questions, and espouse a stronger interchange between empirical and theoretical approaches to this important question.

  • WNT1 Mutations in Early-Onset Osteoporosis and Osteogenesis Imperfecta
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: New England Journal of Medicine. - 0028-4793 .- 1533-4406. ; 368:19, s. 1809-1816
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This report identifies human skeletal diseases associated with mutations in WNT1. In 10 family members with dominantly inherited, early-onset osteoporosis, we identified a heterozygous missense mutation in WNT1, c.652T -> G (p.Cys218Gly). In a separate family with 2 siblings affected by recessive osteogenesis imperfecta, we identified a homozygous nonsense mutation, c.884C -> A, p.Ser295(star). In vitro, aberrant forms of the WNT1 protein showed impaired capacity to induce canonical WNT signaling, their target genes, and mineralization. In mice, Wnt1 was clearly expressed in bone marrow, especially in B-cell lineage and hematopoietic progenitors; lineage tracing identified the expression of the gene in a subset of osteocytes, suggesting the presence of altered cross-talk in WNT signaling between the hematopoietic and osteoblastic lineage cells in these diseases.

  • Microwave-Assisted Semisynthesis and Leishmanicidal Activity of Some Phenolic Constituents from Lichens
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: separations. - 2297-8739. ; 10:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Leishmaniasis is considered one of the most untreated tropical diseases in the world. In this study, we investigated the in vitro leishmanicidal activity and cytotoxicity of various isolated lichen substances, including atranorin (1), usnic acid (2), gyrophoric acid (3), salazinic acid (4), galbinic acid (5), and parietin (6), and some semi-synthetic imine derivatives of usnic acid (7, 8, 9) and atranorin (10, 11, 12, 13). Imine condensation reactions with hydrazine and several amines were assisted by microwave heating, an efficient and eco-friendly energy source. The most interesting result was obtained for compound 2, which has high leishmanicidal activity but also high cytotoxicity. This cytotoxicity was mitigated in its derivative, 9, with better selectivity and high antileishmanic activity. This result may indicate that the usnic acid derivative (9) obtained using condensation with two cyclohexylamine groups is a promising lead compound for the discovery of new semisynthetic antiparasitic drugs.

  • A novel tau mutation in exon 9 (1260V) causes a four-repeat tauopathy
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Experimental Neurology. - 0014-4886. ; 184:1, s. 131-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel mutation in exon 9 of tau, I260V, is associated with a clinical syndrome consistent with frontotemporal dementia with extensive tau pathology; however, neurofibrillary tangles and Pick bodies are absent. Significantly, Sarkosyl- insoluble tau extracted from affected brain tissue consisted almost exclusively of four-repeat isoforms. Consistent with these findings, in vitro biochemical assays demonstrated that the I260V mutation causes a selective increase in tau aggregation and a decrease in tau-induced microtubule assembly with four-repeat isoforms only. The contrasting pathology and biochemical effects of this mutation suggest a different disease mechanism from the other exon 9 mutations and demonstrates the critical role for the first microtubule-binding domain in tau-promoted microtubule assembly and the pathogenic aggregation of tau.

  • Erythropoietin guides multipotent hematopoietic progenitor cells toward an erythroid fate
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The Journal of experimental medicine. - : Rockefeller University Press. - 1540-9538 .- 0022-1007. ; 211:2, s. 181-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The erythroid stress cytokine erythropoietin (Epo) supports the development of committed erythroid progenitors, but its ability to act on upstream, multipotent cells remains to be established. We observe that high systemic levels of Epo reprogram the transcriptomes of multi- and bipotent hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells in vivo. This induces erythroid lineage bias at all lineage bifurcations known to exist between hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and committed erythroid progenitors, leading to increased erythroid and decreased myeloid HSC output. Epo, therefore, has a lineage instructive role in vivo, through suppression of non-erythroid fate options, demonstrating the ability of a cytokine to systematically bias successive lineage choices in favor of the generation of a specific cell type.

  • Intermittent coupling between grip force and load force during oscillations of a hand-held object
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Experimental Brain Research. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 0014-4819 .- 1432-1106. ; 236:10, s. 2531-2544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tightly coordinated grip force adaptations in response to changing load forces have been reported as continuous, stable, and proportional to the load force changes. Considering the existence of inherent sensorimotor feedback delays, current accounts of grip force–load force coupling invoke explicit predictive mechanisms in the form of internal models for feedforward control to account for anticipatory grip force modulations. However, recent findings suggest that the stability and regularity of grip force–load force coupling is less persistent than previously thought. Thus, the objective of the current study was to comprehensively quantify the time-varying characteristics of grip force–load force coupling. Investigations into the coupling’s dynamics during continuous 30 s bouts of load force oscillation revealed intermittent phases of coordination, as well as phases that varied in stability, rather than a persistent and continuously stable pattern of coordination. These findings have important implications for accounts of grip force–load force coupling and of anticipation in motor control, more broadly.

  • Clinicopathological strategies to identify contralateral prostate cancer involvement in potential candidates for focal therapy
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International journal of surgical pathology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1940-2465 .- 1066-8969. ; 18:6, s. 499-507
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To identify the magnitude and possible predictors of contralateral lobe involvement and contralateral extraprostatic extension (EPE) in prostatic biopsy—defined localized unilateral cancers. Patients and Methods: Between January 2005 and August 2009, 1861 patients underwent robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy at the authors’ institution. A total of 1114 had unilateral disease on preoperative biopsy. Final histopathology reports of these patients were reviewed. Results: Of the 1114 patients with unilateral disease on biopsy, 867 (77.9%) had contralateral or bilateral disease on final histopathology. EPE was found in 132 patients (11.9%). Twenty patients (1.8%) had contralateral EPE involvement. High-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasm (HGPIN) on biopsy was the significant predictor of contralateral lobe involvement on both univariate ( P = .02; odds ratio [OR] = 1.791) and multivariate analysis ( P = .004; OR = 2.677). Clinical stage T2 was the significant predictor of contralateral EPE on both univariate ( P = .012; OR = 5.250) and multivariate analysis ( P = .007; OR = 8.656). Conclusion: HGPIN on biopsy significantly predicts for contralateral lobe involvement and should be considered an exclusion criterion for focal therapy in prostate cancer patients. Patients with palpable tumor on digital rectal examination should be advised in favor of radical treatment as these patients may harbor more aggressive tumors involving the contralateral side despite the biopsy findings.

  • High availability in optical networks : Introduction to the feature issue
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Optical Networking. - 1536-5379. ; 6:3, s. 319-321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Journal of Optical Networking's (JON) feature issue, focuses on architectures, technologies, and theory for achieving high service availability in optical transport networks. The feature accepted 14 submissions for publication, these works reflect some important directions and objectives in optical networking research. These papers can be categorized under three themes, cost considerations in survivable optical networks, optimization in survivability design including resource sharing schemes, availability guarantees, and capacity efficiency, protection in IP/MPLS over WDM. J. Farkas, A. Paradisi, and C. Antal, in their paper, proposes and experimentally validates a low-cost, robust, and scalable Ethernet-over-fiber network architecture with fast recovery from both node and link failures. The paper submitted by M. Scheffel proposes an interesting sort of template or building-block approach to constructing the end-to-end topology of a service path.
