  • Direct observations of asteroid interior and regolith structure : Science measurement requirements
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Advances in Space Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0273-1177 .- 1879-1948. ; 62:8, s. 2141-2162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our knowledge of the internal structure of asteroids is, so far, indirect - relying entirely on inferences from remote sensing observations of the surface, and theoretical modeling of formation and evolution. What are the bulk properties of the regolith and deep interior? And what are the physical processes that shape asteroid internal structures? Is the composition and size distribution observed on the surface representative of the bulk? These questions are crucial to understand small bodies' history from accretion in the early Solar System to the present, and direct measurements are needed to answer these questions for the benefit of science as well as for planetary defense or exploration. Radar is one of the main instruments capable of sounding asteroids to characterize internal structure from sub-meter to global scale. In this paper, we review the science case for direct observation of the deep internal structure and regolith of a rocky asteroid of kilometer size or smaller. We establish the requirements and model dielectric properties of asteroids to outline a possible instrument suite, and highlight the capabilities of radar instrumentation to achieve these observations. We then review the expected science return including secondary objectives contributing to the determination of the gravitational field, the shape model, and the dynamical state. This work is largely inherited from MarcoPolo-R and AIDA/AIM studies.

  • Inner-Shell-Ionization-Induced Femtosecond Structural Dynamics of Water Molecules Imaged at an X-Ray Free-Electron Laser
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review X. - : American Physical Society. - 2160-3308. ; 11:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ultrafast structural dynamics of water following inner-shell ionization is a crucial issue in high-energy radiation chemistry. We have exposed isolated water molecules to a short x-ray pulse from a free-electron laser and detected momenta of all produced ions in coincidence. By combining experimental results and theoretical modeling, we can image dissociation dynamics of individual molecules in unprecedented detail. We reveal significant molecular structural dynamics in H2O2+, such as asymmetric deformation and bond-angle opening, leading to two-body or three-body fragmentation on a timescale of a few femtoseconds. We thus reconstruct several snapshots of structural dynamics at different time intervals, which highlight dynamical patterns that are relevant as initiating steps of subsequent radiation-damage processes.

  • Antimicrobial drug use and resistance in Europe
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Emerging Infectious Diseases. - : Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). - 1080-6040 .- 1080-6059. ; 14:11, s. 1722-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our study confronts the use of antimicrobial agents in ambulatory care with the resistance trends of 2 major pathogens, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Escherichia coli, in 21 European countries in 2000-2005 and explores whether the notion that antimicrobial drug use determines resistance can be supported by surveillance data at national aggregation levels. The data obtained from the European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption and the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System suggest that variation of consumption coincides with the occurrence of resistance at the country level. Linear regression analysis showed that the association between antimicrobial drug use and resistance was specific and robust for 2 of 3 compound pathogen combinations, stable over time, but not sensitive enough to explain all of the observed variations. Ecologic studies based on routine surveillance data indicate a relation between use and resistance and support interventions designed to reduce antimicrobial drug consumption at a national level in Europe.

  • On the role of adaptivity for robust laminar flow control
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluid Mechanics. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 0022-1120 .- 1469-7645. ; 767, s. R1-R12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In boundary layer flows, one may reduce skin friction drag by delaying the onset of laminar-to-turbulent transition via the attenuation of small-amplitude Tollmien Schlichting (TS) waves In this work, we use numerical simulations and experiments to compare the robustness of adaptive and model-based techniques for reducing the growth of two-dimensional TS disturbances. In numerical simulations, the optimal linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) regulator shows the best performance under the conditions it was designed for However, it is found that the performance deteriorates linearly with the drift of the Reynolds number from its nominal value. As a result, an order-of-magnitude loss of performance is observed when applying the computation-based I.QG controller in wind-tunnel experiments In contrast, it is shown that the adaptive filtered-X least-mean-squares (FXLMS) algorithm is able to maintain an essentially constant performance for significant deviations of the nominal values of the disturbance amplitude and Reynolds number.

  • Transient birefringence and dichroism in ZnO studied with fs-time-resolved spectroscopic ellipsometry
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Research. - : American Physical Society. - 2643-1564. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The full transient dielectric-function (DF) tensor of ZnO after UV-laser excitation in the spectral range 1.4–3.6 eV is obtained by measuring an m-plane-oriented ZnO thin film with femtosecond (fs)-time-resolved spectroscopic ellipsometry. From the merits of the method, we can distinguish between changes in the real and the imaginary part of the DF as well as changes in birefringence and dichroism, respectively. We find pump-induced switching from positive to negative birefringence in almost the entire measured spectral range for about 1 ps. Simultaneously, weak dichroism in the spectral range below 3.0 eV hints at contributions of inter-valence-band transitions. Line-shape analysis of the DF above the band gap based on discrete exciton, exciton-continuum, and exciton-phonon-complex contributions shows a maximal dynamic increase in the transient exciton energy by 80 meV. The absorption coefficient below the band gap reveals an exponential line shape attributed to Urbach-rule absorption mediated by exciton–longitudinal-optic-phonon interaction. The transient DF is supported by first-principles calculations for 1020cm−3 excited electron-hole pairs in ideal bulk ZnO.

  • Kinematically complete experimental study of Compton scattering at helium atoms near the threshold
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Physics. - : Springer Nature. - 1745-2473 .- 1745-2481. ; 16:7, s. 756-760
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compton scattering is one of the fundamental interaction processes of light with matter. When discovered(1), it was described as a billiard-type collision of a photon 'kicking' a quasi-free electron. With decreasing photon energy, the maximum possible momentum transfer becomes so small that the corresponding energy falls below the binding energy of the electron. In this regime, ionization by Compton scattering becomes an intriguing quantum phenomenon. Here, we report on a kinematically complete experiment studying Compton scattering off helium atoms in that regime. We determine the momentum correlations of the electron, the recoiling ion and the scattered photon in a coincidence experiment based on cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy, finding that electrons are not only emitted in the direction of the momentum transfer, but that there is a second peak of ejection to the backward direction. This finding links Compton scattering to processes such as ionization by ultrashort optical pulses(2), electron impact ionization(3,4), ion impact ionization(5,6) and neutron scattering(7), where similar momentum patterns occur. Compton scattering experiments off helium atoms for photon energies close to the ionization threshold reveal that electrons are not only emitted in the direction of the momentum transfer but also backwards.

  • In-flight active wave cancelation with delayed-x-LMS control algorithm in a laminar boundary layer
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Experiments in Fluids. - : Springer. - 0723-4864 .- 1432-1114. ; 57:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This manuscript demonstrates the first successful application of the delayed-x-LMS (dxLMS) control algorithm for TS-wave cancelation. Active wave cancelation of two-dimensional broadband Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) disturbances is performed with a single DBD plasma actuator. The experiments are conducted in flight on the pressure side of a laminar flow wing glove, mounted on a manned glider. The stability properties of the controller are investigated in detail with experimental flight data, DNS and stability analysis of the boundary layer. Finally, a model-free approach for dxLMS operation is introduced to operate the controller as a ‘black-box’ system, which automatically adjusts the controller settings based on a group speed measurement of the disturbance wave packets. The modified dxLMS controller is operated without a model and is able to adapt to varying conditions that may occur during flight in atmosphere.

  • Zinc oxide nanorod based photonic devices : recent progress in growth, light emitting diodes and lasers
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: NANOTECHNOLOGY. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 20:33, s. 332001-
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zinc oxide (ZnO), with its excellent luminescent properties and the ease of growth of its nanostructures, holds promise for the development of photonic devices. The recent advances in growth of ZnO nanorods are discussed. Results from both low temperature and high temperature growth approaches are presented. The techniques which are presented include metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD), vapour phase epitaxy (VPE), pulse laser deposition (PLD), vapour-liquid-solid (VLS), aqueous chemical growth (ACG) and finally the electrodeposition technique as an example of a selective growth approach. Results from structural as well as optical properties of a variety of ZnO nanorods are shown and analysed using different techniques, including high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL), for both room temperature and for low temperature performance. These results indicate that the grown ZnO nanorods possess reproducible and interesting optical properties. Results on obtaining p-type doping in ZnO micro- and nanorods are also demonstrated using PLD. Three independent indications were found for p-type conducting, phosphorus-doped ZnO nanorods: first, acceptor-related CL peaks, second, opposite transfer characteristics of back-gate field effect transistors using undoped and phosphorus doped wire channels, and finally, rectifying I-V characteristics of ZnO: P nanowire/ZnO:Ga p-n junctions. Then light emitting diodes (LEDs) based on n-ZnO nanorods combined with different technologies (hybrid technologies) are suggested and the recent electrical, as well as electro-optical, characteristics of these LEDs are shown and discussed. The hybrid LEDs reviewed and discussed here are mainly presented for two groups: those based on n-ZnO nanorods and p-type crystalline substrates, and those based on n-ZnO nanorods and p-type amorphous substrates. Promising electroluminescence characteristics aimed at the development of white LEDs are demonstrated. Although some of the presented LEDs show visible emission for applied biases in excess of 10 V, optimized structures are expected to provide the same emission at much lower voltage. Finally, lasing from ZnO nanorods is briefly reviewed. An example of a recent whispering gallery mode (WGM) lasing from ZnO is demonstrated as a way to enhance the stimulated emission from small size structures.
