  • Allmänningen
  • 2024

  • Agonist-specific patterns of beta(2)-adrenoceptor responses in human airway cells during prolonged exposure.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Pharmacology. - : Wiley. - 1476-5381 .- 0007-1188. ; 158, s. 169-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and purpose: beta(2)-Adrenoceptor agonists (beta(2)-agonists) are important bronchodilators used in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. At the molecular level, beta(2)-adrenergic agonist stimulation induces desensitization of the beta(2)-adrenoceptor. In this study, we have examined the relationships between initial effect and subsequent reduction of responsiveness to restimulation for a panel of beta(2)-agonists in cellular and in vitro tissue models. Experimental approach: beta(2)-Adrenoceptor-induced responses and subsequent loss of receptor responsiveness were studied in primary human airway smooth muscle cells and bronchial epithelial cells by measuring cAMP production. Receptor responsiveness was compared at equi-effective concentrations, either after continuous incubation for 24 h or after a 1 h pulse exposure followed by a 23 h washout. Key findings were confirmed in guinea pig tracheal preparations in vitro. Key results: There were differences in the reduction of receptor responsiveness in human airway cells and in vitro guinea pig trachea by a panel of beta(2)-agonists. When restimulation occurred immediately after continuous incubation, loss of responsiveness correlated with initial effect for all agonists. After the 1 h pulse exposure, differences between agonists emerged, for example isoprenaline and formoterol induced the least reduction of responsiveness. High lipophilicity was, to some extent, predictive of loss of responsiveness, but other factors appeared to be involved in determining the relationships between effect and subsequent loss of responsiveness for individual agonists. Conclusions and implications: There were clear differences in the ability of different beta(2) agonists to induce loss of receptor responsiveness at equi-effective concentrations.

  • 'You expose yourself in so many ways': young women's experiences of pelvic examination
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynaecology. - : Informa Healthcare. - 0167-482X .- 1743-8942. ; 32:2, s. 59-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to identify and describe young women's experiences of pelvic examination (PE). Qualitative interviews were conducted with nine women aged 18--23 years, who had undergone at least one PE. Data were analysed using an interpretative phenomenological approach. Three general themes were identified: (1) relinquishing and regaining control, (2) facilitation of the situation by the examiner and (3) PE is an unpleasant necessity. These general themes had a common structure that represented the essence: an intimate situation. The women experienced PE as an intimate situation, which they associated with their sexuality. They felt exposed both bodily and mentally and were placed in a vulnerable situation. PE was considered as unpleasant but necessary to confirm their health. During the PE, the women felt that they lost control of the situation by exposing their intimate parts. To regain control, the women felt a need for continuous information from the examiner. The vulnerable situation could be made less vulnerable if the examiner built a trusting relationship and made the women feel secure and seen as individuals. A deeper understanding of the situation from the women's perspective could facilitate the examiner's performance of PE, leading to more positive experiences among young women.

  • Climat et Urbanisme - La Relation entre le Confort Thermique et la Forme du Cadre Bâti
  • 2003

  • Dwelling on-the-move together in Sweden : sharing exclusive housing in times of marketization
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Social & Cultural Geography. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1464-9365 .- 1470-1197. ; 22:9, s. 1241-1255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For almost a century, Swedes living in shared housing have resided in 'kollektivhus', a form of co-housing that support sharing reproductive work. However, during the past decade, new forms of exclusive shared housing have emerged on the Swedish housing market. In contrast to international trends of vulnerable singles being forced to share housing, this Swedish example shows that also financially privileged singles reside in shared housing. Based on a survey of housing companies and a case study the article argues that mobility has been a driver for this new form of shared housing. In the article, 'dwelling on-the-move together' is identified as a new practice of residing in exclusive shared housing. This practice is characterised by sharing private, exclusive facilities, sharing paid services and sharing spaces for both home and work, in an environment that certifies that residents can come and go as they please while hired staff takes care of their property. While exclusive shared housing is an asset for residents, it also privatise facilities and reintroduces domestic workers to middle-class housing. In all, the marketization of shared housing risks introducing a stratification of shared housing which may reinforce the geographic and social polarisation of Swedish cities.

  • From Folkhem to lifestyle housing in Sweden : segregation and urban form, 1930s-2010s
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Housing Policy. - : Routledge. - 1949-1255 .- 1949-1247. ; 3:16, s. 316-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses the political and ideological transformations underlying the gradual privatisation and deregulation of the mid-twentieth-century Keynesian model of housing provision in Sweden. We identify a series of three political and ideological shifts in housing policy and urban form since the 1930s: regulating Folkhem housing, deregulating Folkhem housing, and back to business in housing. We argue that even though the Folkhem parole of ‘housing for all’ differs extensively from the current situation where the market is ‘housing the privileged’, segregation trends have, from the Folkhem to the post-welfare period, been shaped by both state interventions and market forces. Second, we argue that there is a continuing trend through which newly constructed housing has metamorphosed from a basic human right for the working class into an expression of individual distinction and ‘style’ for the upper middle and middle classes. While privileged classes, more than ever before in modern Swedish housing history, have the possibility to choose new forms of housing, the most impoverished groups live in residual and often stigmatised peripheral housing areas. One main conclusion is that recent forms of housing for privileged groups signal a cultural and ideological shift towards new, more elitist conceptions of housing and privilege.

  • Gating Housing in Sweden : Walling in the Privileged, Walling out the Public
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Urban Walls. - : Routledge. - 9781138304338
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The past two decades have witnessed an increase of housing surrounded by walls in the Swedish cityscape. Although Swedish cities do not have the equivalent of gated communities, in the sense of isolated islands of ‘incarceration’ or of a ‘fortress city’, this chapter shows that they are undergoing a process of material enclavism, resulting in urban gating and the construction of exclusive residential hotel housing. The main argument is that gated housing in Sweden reflects and reinforces the ongoing social and geographical polarization of the metropolitan regions. The practices of walling in and walling out, constructed through housing, are simultaneously hindering movement for the general public while supporting movement for privileged groups. Additionally, the concentration of services, amenities and access to physical and high-speed digital infrastructure in exclusive housing lead to new spaces of disaffiliation, or self-segregation, for privileged groups. The chapter concludes that the process of walling in and walling out is a development towards privatization and material enclavism, indicative of a shift in attitudes toward housing in Swedish politics.

  • Gender and Space
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Encyclopedia of Housing and Home. - : Elsevier. - 9780080471631 ; , s. 250-254
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the field of housing research, gender and space have historically been overlooked, both empirically and theoretically. The theoretical base of research on housing, gender, and space is to be found in a cross-disciplinary field of spatial theory, gender studies, feminist and critical studies in geography, sociology and architecture. In this article, it is primarily the spatial-theoretical grounding that we want to emphasise. The article first introduces theoretical approaches to the research area and then gives examples of research within two themes related to the spatial-theoretical point of departure.

  • Gender and Use of Space
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of public space is an important part of women’s and men’s daily lives in cities and an important arena to promote social inclusion in cities. Public space consists of places for social encounter and exchange, places for political action and participation in public life and plays an important role as places for economic activities. This paper presents a case study of a neighbourhood in San José, Costa Rica planned for a low-income community. The every day life activities of women and men have been studied in order to analyse the use of public space. An outline for a model of activity mapping that can be used for gender-sensitive planning is suggested.

  • Grindsamhälle : the rise of urban gating and gated housing in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Housing Studies. - : Routledge. - 0267-3037 .- 1466-1810. ; 33:1, s. 18-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden does not have gated communities, but this paper argues that processes of gating and the associated consequences are apparent in Sweden, particularly in metropolitan regions. Based on interviews, observations and analysis of previous research, the article identifies the rise of urban gating and gated housing. Urban gating restricts access to previously public land through material gating and results in a loss of the right to use-value of urban land. The rise of a new and exclusive form of gated housing associated with the lifestyles of the mobile middle class, referred to here, as the residential hotel, is spotlighted, prompting questions about the concentration of affluence in already privileged areas and the reinforcing effect of gating on existing patterns of socio-spatial polarization.

  • Imposing 'Enclosed Communities'? : Urban Gating of Large Housing Estates in Sweden and France
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Land. - : MDPI. - 2073-445X. ; 12:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gated communities and gated housing enclaves have primarily been identified as elite spaces of privilege that support self-imposed disaffiliation and spatial and social withdrawal by the affluent. Over the past decade, however, European countries have also seen a rise of gating in large housing estates. Drawing on previous research and a comparative case study that includes interviews, observations, and mapping, this article analyses policies and practices of gating in large housing estates since 2010 in Malmo, Sweden and since 2000 in Paris, France. We argue, first, that gating is legitimised by policy arguments about 'defensible space', by a critique of the modernist design, and by a perceived need for diversification. Secondly, we expand the notion of urban gating and identify four types of enclosure: complete enclosure, semi-enclosure, enclosure through densification, and enclosure of parks and playgrounds. We conclude that the notion of the welfare state has changed, not only in financial terms but also as an urban form, leading to the micro-segregation of housing and land, which makes visible the social stratification within large housing estates. Gating of large housing estates thus leads to 'enclosed communities' rather than 'gated communities'.

  • Mobility as a stratifying factor in housing : dwelling-in-place contra dwelling-on-the-move
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Mobilities. - : Routledge. - 1745-0101 .- 1745-011X. ; 13:1, s. 96-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Housing is almost entirely overlooked in mobility studies. Yet mobility is intrinsically linked to housing, not only for the cybernetic elite or global nomads, but also for the middle class. Through a comparative case study of two extreme cases of housing, the Markeliushus from 1935 and Victoria Park from 2009, this study found that mobility has been continuously linked to discourses and practices of housing the modern Swede. Furthermore the findings suggest that two contrasting housing forms have evolved: dwelling-in-place and dwelling-on-the-move. I argue that these two housing forms are part of an evolving stratification of housing based on mobility. The article concludes that mobility has become an entry point for disaffiliation by privileged groups, accessible through housing.

  • Periferins micrópolis - genus, rum och fattigdom i Costa Rica
  • 2009

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PLAN. - : Föreningen för Samhällsplanering (FFS). - 0032-0560. ; 72:2, s. 16-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Meeting global challenges in research cooperation Proceedings of a conference and workshop in Uppsala, May 27–29, 2008. - 9789197574198 ; , s. 518-526
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses spatial interventions as an important part of women’s struggles to improve their living conditions in poor urban areas. A case-study from San José, Costa Rica is the basis for the discussion. Women’s interventions are analyzed in three public places— a park, a playground and a community centre— through the concept of appropriation. The study shows that women’s interventions have influenced both the built environment and the position of the participating women. The study points out women’s participation and challenges the image of the female poor as passive victims.

  • Shared Housing as Public Space? The Ambiguous Borders of Social Infrastructure
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Urban Planning. - : Cogitatio Press. - 2183-7635. ; 7:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Folkhem era in Sweden set high architectural standards for social infrastructures dispersedly located in cities. Over the past two decades, however, Swedish planning, when it comes to the localization of social infrastructure, has been increasingly characterized by privatized social infrastructures added to housing. Methodologically, this article draws on a compilation of architectural designs of shared housing that includes social infrastructure, 12 interviews with developers, and 22 interviews with residents. The article argues, first, that two historical approaches can be identified: one in which porous borders support urban social life in and around the housing complex and another where distinct boundaries form an edge where things end. Secondly, the article argues that in recent shared housing complexes, the infrastructures of fitness, health care, and privatized services—previously available solely in the public realm—have moved physically and mentally closer to the individual, largely replacing residents’ everyday use of public space. The article concludes that in recent shared housing complexes, ambiguous borders are formed. Ambiguous borders allow a flow of goods and people, but the flow is based on the needs and preferences of residents only. Overall, such privatization counteracts the development of urban social life while adding to housing inequality, as this form of housing is primarily accessible only to the relatively wealthy. Furthermore, there is a risk that urban planning may favour such privatization to avoid maintenance costs, even though the aim of planning for general public accessibility to social infrastructure is thereby shifted towards planning primarily for specific groups.

  • Sharing is caring? : Kollektivhus, residential hotels and co-living in the context of housing inequality in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Architectural Research. - Oslo : Nordic Academic Press of Architectural Research. - 1893-5281. ; 33:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sharing housing is more often than not seen through a positive lens of togetherness, de-growth, community spirit and as a driver of the sharing economy but as the urban population increases and affordable housing decreases, sharing housing is also a basis for economic profiteering. This article explores the socio-material differences in housing specifically designed to be shared, and which exist on the Swedish housing market in the 2020s. The historical trajectories of three key shared forms of housing in Sweden, the kollektivhus, the residential hotel and the co-living hub, are analysed after which a four-field figure is developed, coupling material and social aspects of shared forms of housing. The article argues that housing designed to be shared is both a way to counteract and a driver for spatial inequalities. There is a risk of inequalities in material standards, inequalities based on concentration or lack of facilities and services, and a risk of economic profiteering of vulnerable groups. One challenge for future housing in Sweden is to counteract housing inequality by supporting affordable housing designed to be shared, while at the same time safeguarding the interests of vulnerable groups.

  • Shelter for the Urban Poor - Proposals for Improvements Inspired by World Urban Forum III
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report is a compilation of papers written by architects, engineers and planners from Africa, Asia and Latin America, involved in housing and urban development with a focus on the urban poor. The papers present projects for change and improvements within the frame of an inter-national training programme offered by Housing Development and Management (HDM) Lund University, carried out in conjunction with the third session of the World Urban Forum (WUF3). In the year 2007 half of the world’s population is expected to live in urban areas. Urban areas are acknowledged as centres of economic, social and cultural development, but at the same time urbanization in much of the world leads to a precarious existence for the poor. Many urban poor live in slums with unacceptable shelter conditions, insufficient water and sanitation, poor social infrastructure and hazardous environments. The papers included in this report takes the built environment as a starting point for discussions and proposals of how decent shelter and sustainable urban development can contribute to poverty alleviation, as a means to improve living conditions for the urban poor. The authors of the papers are involved in housing as government officials, in municipalities, in private practice and consultancy, at universities and in Non-Governmental Organisations. Common to these writers is their strong commitment to address the living conditions of the urban poor, be it related to urban planning, access to urban land, improvements of sanitation or the need for new policies.

  • 2005
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thesis analyzes the everyday life of women and men in a neighbourhood planned for low-income housing in the ourskirts of the capital San José in Costa Rica. The research uses an everyday life perspective and shows how gender organization leads to a division of labour and a use of space that differentiate between women and men's activities. There are space use patterns that reflect the existing gender organization, but also patterns of women crossing borders between public and private space to perform their activities.

  • Staden studerad
  • 2014

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Architectural Research. - : SINTEF Academic Press. - 1893-5281. ; 31:1, s. 9-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • “Stråk” is one of the design approaches in the current Swedish sustainability discourse, which has been developed with the objective of reconnecting so- called vulnerable districts with the urban core. This paper investigates the architectural transformation of the Rosengård stråk in Malmö, Sweden. Taking everyday movement as a theoretical starting point, empirical data was gathered through interviews with key planners in Malmö municipality and a questionnaire distributed at the two endpoints of the Rosengård stråk. The study found that the stråk contributed to the liveliness of the disadvantaged neighbourhood and that movement through the neighbourhood had indeed increased. The paper suggests that in urban design, stråk can be defined as corridors of movement that connect neighbourhoods and nodes and link local and regional scales, and, that planning for stråk imply a shift towards planning for connectivity. This approach contrasts with previous planning approaches and ideologies, which have focused on improving adjacency and accessibility to service and amenities at the neighbourhood scale. Planning for connectivity, in contrast, implies creating a network of connections with the aim of also making people leave their neighbourhood to access services and amenities necessary for daily life. The paper concludes that although investments in stråk may make it easier for people to exercise their right to move, they carry the risk of reduced investment at neighbourhood level, since when connectivity matters more, adjacency matters less.

  • Urban Explorations :
  • 2016

  • What we share: covert commoning in Swedish coliving?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Urban Studies. - 2703-8866. ; 3:1, s. 44-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sharing housing with non-family members has increasingly become a way to reduce costs while pursuing an autonomous yet communal living throughout the life course. During the past decade, a new form of shared housing has entered the Swedish real estate market: coliving. Like shared housing generally, some of the aims of coliving are to help address the housing shortage, decrease loneliness, increase the sustainability of housing and provide flexible housing for an increasingly mobile population. Based on the design of sixteen coliving hubs and interviews with thirteen coliving developers and operators as well as fourteen colivers, we show how the visions and experiences of developers and residents are mutually constitutive, but also at odds with each other. We argue first that even though coliving is set in a discourse of commoning as an alternative form of exchange, production and living, developers decrease the size of shared spaces and reduce options for residents to manage their homes and participate in choosing whom to live with. As a consequence, colivers feel the need to develop strategies to manage privacy and practice self-care, since having emotional balance becomes a prerequisite for an intensely shared life. Furthermore, the emotional labour of colivers revolves primarily around socializing with others similar to themselves while services, such as cleaning and maintenance, are provided by staff. In conclusion, we define commoning practices in coliving as a form of covert commoning built on contradictions between discourse and lived experience.

  • 13 myter om bostadsfrågan
  • 2016

  • Street canyon microclimate in traditional and modern neighbourhoods in a hot dry climate - a case study in Fez, Morocco
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. ; 2, s. 661-665
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The urban climate can vary considerably within cities. In a hot and dry climate, the micro¬climate at street level depends to a large extent on the urban geometry and building density. To be able to plan and design comfortable urban areas in the future, it is important to understand how different urban textures influence the climate. This paper deals with a case study in Fez, Morocco, where climate measurements took place in two entirely different types of neighbourhoods: a modern, suburban area with wide streets and many open spaces and a traditional, dense neighbourhood in the old city. The results show significant differences between the two neighbourhoods. In both summer and winter the minimum temperature was 2–4°C lower in the modern area, and the maximum temperature was about 10°C higher. In summer the modern area was extremely uncomfortable whereas the traditional was within the comfort zone. In winter neither area achieved comfort, but the modern was better.

    • OverviewAdequate housing is universally recognized as the basis for productive social engagement, but constitutes adequate housing? This encyclopedia, edited by distinguished researcher and teacher Susan J. Smith, uses studies in economics and finance, psychology, social policy, sociology, anthropology, geography, architecture, law, and other disciplines to create an international portrait of a house and, ultimately, a home. Summarizing the diverse approaches are 34 overview articles that help readers navigate more complex materials, and beneath them are cross-references and citations that depict their interrelationships. Presenting comprehensive and balanced views of qualitative and quantitative approaches to housing, this multidisciplinary approach reveals the many facets of our efforts to claim some place as our own.

  • Clinical factors associated with quality of life among women with endometriosis : a cross-sectional study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMC Women's Health. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1472-6874. ; 23:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundEndometriosis often leads to a decrease in Quality of Life (QoL), due to its impact on various aspects of women's lives, such as social life, mental health, sex life, and working capacity. Although previous studies have assessed QoL in women with endometriosis, few studies have explored the impact of different clinical variables on QoL. The aim of this study was to investigate how women with endometriosis perceive their QoL, and to analyze which clinical factors are associated with QoL.MethodsThe Endometriosis Health Profile-30 and the ENDOCARE Questionnaire were distributed to 1000 women diagnosed with endometriosis from 10 different clinics across Sweden. The responses from 476 women were included in univariate and multivariable regression analyses, where the clinical factors were correlated with overall QoL and QoL dimensions.ResultsThe women participating in this study reported a low QoL. The clinical factors that showed a significant correlation with overall QoL were age at first onset of endometriosis symptoms (beta= -0.64, p < 0.001), having more than 10 visits to general practitioners before referral to a gynecologist (beta = 5.58, p = 0.036), current or previous mental health issues (beta = 7.98, p < 0.001) patient-centeredness (beta= -2.59, p < 0.001) and use of opioids (beta = 7.14, p = 0.002).ConclusionsThis study shows that opioid use and mental health issues were associated with a worse QoL, whereas a higher degree of patient-centeredness was associated with a better QoL. The association between opioid use and a worse QoL might not entirely be caused by the opioid use itself but also by symptom severity and mental health issues. An improved patient-centeredness and more focus on taking care of mental health issues would reasonably result in a better QoL for women with endometriosis.

  • Concealed Stigmatization : Resident Experiences and Practices in Area-Based Development in Gårdsten
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis studies resident experiences and practices in area-based development in the residential area of Gårdsten, Gothenburg. Since 1997, the public housing company Gårdstensbostäder has been tasked with positively developing Gårdsten, which until then was considered run down and stigmatized. Gårdstensbostäder has received praise for its area-based work in Gårdsten, especially when the area received better ratings on the police’s list of vulnerable areas. While several studies have focused on resident experiences of living in stigmatized areas, few studies have focused on resident experiences of area-based development. This thesis studies how resident experiences and practices in area-based development are shaped by territorial stigmatization. The study is a case study of area-based development in Gårdsten and the primary data used are semi-structured interviews and go-alongs with twenty-one Gårdsten residents. The study uses theories of territorial stigmatization (Wacquant, 2008; Garbin & Millington, 2012), stigmatization (Tyler, 2020), and space (Bourdieu, 1999; Massey, 2005). Despite informants being positive about Gårdstensbostäder’s work in the area, their experiences and practices continue to be shaped by territorial stigmatization. I identify three components to the territorial stigmatization that Gårdsten is currently subjected to: continuing stickiness; pragmatic resistance; and instances of blurring. These three components constitute a new form of territorial stigmatization in Gårdsten, which I call concealed stigmatization. Behind the positive representations that emphasize Gårdstensbostäder’s success, nuanced, multi-layered resident experiences of continued stigmatization are concealed. The thesis critically assesses the role of area-based initiatives and Swedish public housing, identifying limitations to area-based approaches organized and coordinated by public housing companies.

  • Ingår i: Architecture City Environment: Proceedings of PLEA 2000, Cambridge, UK 2-5 July 2000. - 1 902916 16 6 ; , s. 472-476
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The proportion of the world’s population living in urban areas is constantly increasing. Different urban shapes result in different microclimates. The way cities are planned and built is therefore important for the global energy use. This study presents results from measurements of street climate in the city of Fez, Morocco, in contrasting traditional and modern housing areas, each with its own problems and qualities. Air temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity were measured in the two types of housing area, during both hot and cold seasons. These preliminary results confirm the night-time heat island phenomenon, while during the day the two areas show different behaviour. Further studies aim at recommendations on how to plan and build new housing areas in the region, to increase urban and indoor thermal comfort
