- Förstudien "Goda livschanser på Hisingen" syftar till att minska fattigdom och utanförskap och leda till att Hisingsbornas livschanser utjämnas. Sysselsättning och fast arbete är här avgörande för att stödja de grupper som har de sämsta ekonomiska förutsättningarna i Sverige. Genom kartläggning av den politiska viljan i tre stadsdelsnämnderna och Hälso- och sjukvårdsnämnden för Hisingen har projektet arbetat med strategisk påverkan och samverkan genom att skapa en plattform för initierat beslutsfattande och effektivt målgruppsarbete.

- Previous studies have often referred to the outlaw biker club as a fraternity with security and solidarity functions. In this article, Grundvall highlights some other aspects that suggest that this type of bonding tends to reinforce introversion, secrecy, and a hostile attitude toward the outside world. While on the one hand, unbroken loyalty and ritual self-affirmations form strong ties and security, on the other, they also contribute to mimetic power struggles both within the group and against other biker clubs. Grundvall demonstrates how self-reinforcing processes within the group may create a system in which secrets must be preserved, betrayal must be avoided, and where the outside world seems increasingly intimidating. The conclusions are, in many respects, also relevant to street gangs and other groups in the margins of society.

Outlaws uppstår i en dialog/konfrontation med samhället och utgör på så sätt ett betydelsebärande element i förståelsen och uttolkningen av gällande normer. Det blir också tydligt att outlaws under vissa tidsperioder är oumbärliga som ventil för den frustration och den oro som uppstår i ett samhälle. Bikers utgör i detta hänseende inget undantag.

- Bikers peripheral life is in some aspects a result from social processes leading to exclusion and social shortcomings, however, it is also an arena which may be charged and turned exciting. The aesthetic practice in the biker culture is versatile. The motorcycle – the object around which the whole culture rotates – is in this context something much more than just a means of conveyance. In this presentation, I will show how the biker interprets signs and symbols in cultural core objects such as the motorbike, back patches, tattoos and the American rebel flag. It is striking to see to what extent the use and interpretation of signs and symbols create symbolic masculine patterns that reinforce the established social order in the biker culture. Both the symbolic patterns and the social order that emerge, prove to be permeated by myths.

- In this paper I will sketch out some educational strategies to meet new societal conditions. In the community-based social work programme we have located the education to one of the problematic suburban areas of Gothenburg in an effort to learn about the local community and how the citizens cope with their lives. We also teach social work with support from the social workers in the district. It is done in an experiential kind of approach where the students learn from authentic cases and tasks.

Vagabond MC. Gemenskap, manlighet och marginalitet. En studie av en västsvensk bikerklubb.

- The global objective with this ethnographic (culture) study is to examine the social patterns and significant structures in a local (West Swedish) biker club. A newly formed club, Vagabond MC, constitutes my primary research object and is at the same time my entrance into the biker culture, generally speaking. I have used a qualitative method consisting of two years´ participatory observations in said biker club and 21 interviews with bikers and other people with great cultural insights. A historical retrospect international as well as national and local constitutes a context for the newly formed biker club Vagabond MC. The empirical part is composed of fragments from the club activities, including descriptions of biker outings, garage activities, parties, meetings, birthdays, construction work on a new club house etc. The significant structures of the biker culture are discussed based on the social order that forms both the club community and the contact with the other biker clubs. However, the bikers´ construction of meaning and ethos must also be considered through an interpretation of the symbolic patterns that compose the mainstay of the bikers´ world of symbols. My interpretation of the signs and symbols in the biker culture indicate that they constitute a mythological web which reinforces the social order both within the biker culture and outside in its relation to the surrounding society. All-pervading themes in the study are: Community, masculinity and marginality. The community in the biker club expresses a need for protection and support and constitutes a basis from which they orient themselves in the surrounding world. The masculinity is characterized by a legitimacy and possibility to give full expression to the sides of their own personality which are not always vented in other contexts. A marginal existence is in some aspects a result from social processes leading to exclusion through social shortcomings, however, it is also an arena that in a sense is chosen and which may be charged and turned exciting. This study is balancing two opposite perspectives. The first is a structural perspective, where changes in society, unemployment, marginal positions etc. have turned people into bikers and made them (often) end up in exposed situation. The second perspective is more intention and action oriented. It is based on the assumption that bikers are both reflecting and creative (persons).

- The multidisciplinary research and evaluation project Victim support in Gothenburg comprehensively surveys the public and the private providers of victim support services in Gothenburg, and evaluates and examines the publicly financed victim support services. Data have been gathered through telephone interviews with public as well as private providers of victim support services, and face-to-face interviews with publicly financed providers of such support services and different categories of victims of crime. The focus of the paper is on the social function of victim support. From the perspective of Emile Durkheim, Randall Collins, and Mary Douglas, and a context of growing social inequalities, it is argued that victim support on a societal level can be viewed as a ritual that works parallel with and strengthens the solidarity-producing effect of crime-punishment rituals. In the discourse of some of the providers of victim support services, victim of crime is implicitly related to concepts of purity and pollution. Hence, on an individual level, victim support, in particular counselling, can be viewed as a ritual through which the victim is purified from the pollution that the crime has caused. As a ritual of purity, victim support thus benefits the victim’s reintegration into society.
