  • Integration of 150 Gbps/fiber optical engines based on multicore fibers and 6-channel VCSELs and PDs
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. - 9781628419887 ; 9753, s. Art. no. 97530S-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multicore fiber enables a parallel optic data link with a single optical fiber, thus providing an attractive way to increase the total throughput and the integration density of the interconnections. We study and present photonics integration technologies and optical coupling approaches for multicore transmitter and receiver subassemblies. Such optical engines are implemented and characterized using multimode 6-core fibers and multicore-optimized active devices: 850-nm VCSEL and PD arrays with circular layout and multi-channel driver and receiver ICs. They are developed for bit-rates of 25 Gbps/channel and beyond, i.e.

  • Fiber optic parametric amplifier with 10-dB net gain without pump dithering
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. - 1041-1135 .- 1941-0174. ; 25:3, s. 234-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS)-suppressed fiber optic parametric amplifier/wavelength converter constructed from four highly nonlinear fiber pieces with applied strain gradients and separated by isolators. The effective total SBS threshold increase is about 11 dB, and a net parametric gain of 10 dB is obtained without any pump dithering.

  • Electrooptic control of the modal distribution in a silicate fiber
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optica Publishing Group (formerly OSA). - 1094-4087. ; 30:8, s. 12474-12483
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate the use of the electrooptic effect to control the propagation constant of the guided modes in silicate few mode fibers with internal electrodes. The electrooptic effect induces a perturbation of the fiber's refractive index profile that controls intermodal interference. To increase the electrooptic effect the silicate fibers are poled. The response time is in the nanosecond range.

  • All-optical phase and amplitude regenerator for next-generation telecommunications systems
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 4:10, s. 690-695
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fibre-optic communications systems have traditionally carried data using binary (on-off) encoding of the light amplitude. However, next-generation systems will use both the amplitude and phase of the optical carrier to achieve higher spectral efficiencies and thus higher overall data capacities. Although this approach requires highly complex transmitters and receivers, the increased capacity and many further practical benefits that accrue from a full knowledge of the amplitude and phase of the optical field more than outweigh this additional hardware complexity and can greatly simplify optical network design. However, use of the complex optical field gives rise to a new dominant limitation to system performance—nonlinear phase noise. Developing a device to remove this noise is therefore of great technical importance. Here, we report the development of the first practical (‘black-box’) all-optical regenerator capableof removing both phase and amplitude noise from binary phase-encoded optical communications signals.

  • High-speed low-power and board-mountable optical transceivers for scalable & energy efficient advanced on-board digital processors
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 11180
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the development and verification testing of a high speed multimode, multicore transceiver technology for intra-satellite optical interconnects. We report the fabrication and functional testing of opto-parts including 25 Gb/s 850 nm VCSEL/PD as well as the verification testing of the VCSELs against radiation and lifetime performance. In addition we report the development and evaluation testing of a multi-core cable assembly that was fabricated and mated with MiniAVIM multi-core connectors to develop hi-rel multi-core optical patchcords for pigtailing the transceiver modules. The fiber optic, electronic and opto-parts were used to assemble the first ever fully packaged and pigtailed, six-core optical transceiver prototype module that operates at 25 Gb/s channel bit rate at an energy consumption of ∠4.5 mW/Gb/s.

  • The European project Merlin on multi-gigabit, energy-efficient, ruggedized lightwave engines for advanced on-board digital processors
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 10563
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern broadband communication networks rely on satellites to complement the terrestrial telecommunication infrastructure. Satellites accommodate global reach and enable world-wide direct broadcasting by facilitating wide access to the backbone network from remote sites or areas where the installation of ground segment infrastructure is not economically viable. At the same time the new broadband applications increase the bandwidth demands in every part of the network - and satellites are no exception. Modern telecom satellites incorporate On-Board Processors (OBP) having analogue-to-digital (ADC) and digital-to-analogue converters (DAC) at their inputs/outputs and making use of digital processing to handle hundreds of signals; as the amount of information exchanged increases, so do the physical size, mass and power consumption of the interconnects required to transfer massive amounts of data through bulk electric wires.

  • Towards the Ultra-Sensitive Optical Link Enabled by Low Noise Phase-Sensitive Amplifiers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 5:7, s. 430-436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical phase-sensitive amplifiers (PSAs) are known to be capable, in principle, of realizing noiseless amplification and improving the signal-to-noise-ratio of optical links by 3 dB compared to conventional, phase-insensitively amplified links. However, current state-of-the-art PSAs are still far from being practical, lacking e.g. significant noise performance improvement, broadband gain and modulation-format transparency. Here we demonstrate experimentally, for the first time, an optical-fiber-based non-degenerate PSA link consisting of a phase-insensitive parametric copier followed by a PSA that provides broadband amplification, signal modulation-format independence, and nearly 6-dB link noise-figure (NF) improvement over conventional, erbium-doped fiber amplifier based links. The PSA has a record-low 1.1-dB NF, and can be extended to work with multiple wavelength channels with modest system complexity. This concept can also be realized in other materials with third-order nonlinearities, and is useful in any attenuation-limited optical link.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the crosstalk characteristics of a dense two-dimensional 6-channel 850-nm VCSEL array designed for multimode multicore fiber (MCF) interconnects. Interchannel optical, thermal, and electrical crosstalk is measured and found to not affect channel integrity and receiver sensitivity when transmitting data over an MCF with a fiber fan-out. We demonstrate error-free data transmission (bit-error-ratio
