  • Real-world effectiveness of vedolizumab in inflammatory bowel disease : week 52 results from the Swedish prospective multicentre SVEAH study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology. - : Sage Publications. - 1756-283X .- 1756-2848. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Prospectively and systematically collected real-world data on vedolizumab are scarce. We aimed to assess the long-term clinical effectiveness of vedolizumab in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Methods: This study was a prospective, observational, multicentre study. Overall, 286 patients with active IBD were included (Crohn's disease, n = 169; ulcerative colitis, n = 117). The primary outcomes were clinical response at week 12 and clinical remission at week 52, based on the Harvey Bradshaw Index and the partial Mayo Clinic score. Secondary outcomes included clinical remission at week 12, clinical response at week 52, corticosteroid-free clinical remission at week 52, changes in biochemical measures, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL).Results: At baseline, 88% of the patients were exposed to anti-TNF and 41% of the patients with Crohn's disease had undergone ⩾1 surgical resection. At week 12, clinical response was 27% and remission 47% in Crohn's disease; corresponding figures in ulcerative colitis were 52% and 34%. Clinical response, remission and corticosteroid-free remission at week 52 were 22%, 41% and 40% in Crohn's disease and 49%, 47% and 46% in ulcerative colitis, respectively. A statistically significant decrease in median faecal-calprotectin and C-reactive protein was observed at 12 and 52 weeks in patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The HRQoL measures Short Health Scale and EuroQol 5-Dimensions improved in both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis patients (p < 0.001). Clinical disease activity at baseline was inversely associated with clinical remission at week 52.Conclusion: Vedolizumab proved effective for the treatment of refractory IBD in clinical practice.

  • The Promises of the Free World : Postsocialist Experience in Argentina and the Making of Migrants, Race, and Coloniality
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis investigates the narrated experiences of a number of individuals that migrated to Argentina from Russia and Ukraine in the wake of the fall of the Soviet Union. The over-arching aim of this thesis is to study the ways in which these migrants navigated the social reality in Argentina, with regards to available physical, material, and socioeconomic positions as well as with regards to their narrated self-understandings and identifications. The empirical data consists of ethnographic in-depth interviews and participatory observation from Buenos Aires between the years 2011 and 2014. Through the theoretical frameworks of political discourse theory, critical race studies, auto-ethnography, and theories on coloniality, the author examines questions of migration, mobility, race, class, and gender in the processes of re-establishing a life in a new context. The interviewees were not only directly affected by the collapse of the USSR in the sense that it drastically changed their terrain of possible futures as well as retroactive understandings of their pasts, but they also began their lives in Argentina during the turmoil of the economic crisis that culminated in 2001. Central to this thesis is how these dislocatory events impacted the interviewees’ possibilities and limitations for living the life they had expected, and thus how discursive structures affect subject positions and identifications, and thereby create specific conditions for different relocatory trajectories. By focusing on how these individuals narrate their reasons for migration and their integration into Argentine labor and housing markets, the author demonstrates the role Argentine and East European history, as well as the neoliberal restructuring of the postsocialist region and Argentina in the 1990’s, had for self-understandings, subject positions, identities, and mobility. Various intersections of power, and particularly the making of race and whiteness, are important for the way that the interviewees negotiated subject positions and identifications. The author addresses how affect and hope played a part in these processes and how downward mobility was articulated and made meaningful. She also examines how participants’ ideas about a “good life” were related to understandings of the past, questions of race, social inequality, and a logic of coloniality.

  • Effects of hybrid and dietary mussel meal on broiler performance during 10 weeks of rearing
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Annual meeting of the European Association for Animal Production. - 1382-6077. ; , s. 564-564
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Organic broiler production is characterised by a long rearing period (>10 weeks) and diets based on locally available feedstuff. Until recently, conventional fast growing broilers hybrids have been used exclusively in organic broiler production in Sweden. Rearing fast growing hybrids during long periods has resulted in e.g. ascites and leg disorders and the need for alternative slow growing hybrids for these production systems has been outspoken. Moreover, the nutrient composition (especially protein quality) in the organic diets does not meet the high demands of the conventional fast growing hybrid. This study investigated broiler production performance in the fast growing hybrid Ross 308 (R) and the slower growing hybrid Rowan Ranger (RR) fed either a standard organic diet (O, 11.3 MJ ME and 164 g protein/kg feed) or an organic diet with mussel meal as protein source (M, 11.2 MJ ME and 156 g protein/kg feed) during a 10 weeks rearing period. The study included in total 389 birds housed in groups of 20-21 birds per group divided over the treatment combinations; 5 RO, 4 RM, 5 RRO and 4 RRM groups. During the rearing period, 22 birds were culled due to leg weakness and 16 died or were culled due to other reasons. The statistical analyses were performed with linear mixed models in SAS. Preliminary results indicated that R birds grew faster when fed the mussel meal diet while this difference in the response to protein quality was less pronounces in RR birds (4,586a±55.3, 3,961b±49.5, 2,919c±55.3 and 2,891c±49.5 g live weight at 71 d in the RM, RO, RRM and RRO treatment respectively, LSM±SE; different subscript letters indicate pairwise differences of P<0.05). A significantly higher proportion of RM birds were culled due to leg weakness compared to the other treatments (P<0.05). Dressing percentage was higher in R than RR birds (P<0.05), but there were no effect of diet treatment.

  • Impact of first parity litter size on sow stayability and lifetime production
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To increase production level increase of number of piglets born per litter has been one of the main breeding goals during the last decades. The negative welfare consequences on piglets being born in a large litter are well known while the welfare impacts on sows that produce large litters are more uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of first parity litter size on sow stayability and lifetime production. Sows having a small (<12 piglets total born; SL) or medium (12-14 piglets total born; ML) first parity litter size had significantly (p <0.001) more litters before end of production than sows having a large (>14 piglets total born; LL) first parity litter size. Sows with LL was significant (p<0.001) less likely to have a second litter than sows with SL and ML. Sows with SL and ML had the highest lifetime production of weaned piglets. The results of this study indicate that it is important take first parity litter size into account when assessing sow welfare and profitability in commercial piglet producing herds. Having a SL or ML was found to have a positive effect on sow stayability and lifetime production.

  • Impact of litter size on sow stayability in Swedish commercial piglet producing herds
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-605X .- 1751-0147. ; 58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Sows' ability to produce an excessive amount of piglets has shaped modern piglet production and there has been a steady increase in litter size during the last decades. This development has caused some negative side-effects, such as an increase in the proportion of stillborn piglets, a decrease in the proportion of weaned piglets and a larger variation in quality of piglets. Swedish commercial piglet producing herds have, like other countries with high production levels, high piglet mortality and high annual removal rate of gilts and sow. These problems seem to have increased during the same period that litter sizes have increased. Therefore present study aim to investigate whether there is an association between litter sizes and sow stayability. Results: The probability to produce ≥4 litters during a lifetime was significantly lower for sows giving birth to ≤8, 15 and ≥17 piglets in total in their first parity litter compared to sows giving birth to 13 piglets. Except for the group of sows having a small (≤11 piglets born in total) first parity litter size in combination with a medium (12-14 piglets born in total) second parity litter size, all other groups were significantly associated with an impaired ability to stay ≥4 litters compared to sows having a medium both first and second parity litter size. There were differences in removal reason between sows having small, medium or large first parities litter sizes. Conclusions: Associations between litter sizes in low parities and sow stayability were found. Our results indicate that aiming for keeping sows giving birth to a medium-sized litter, with approximately 12-14 piglets born in total may improve sows stayability and decrease the risk of unplanned removal. This should be considered when planning breeding strategy and annual removal in Swedish commercial piglets producing herds.

  • The Responsible Business Person : Studies of business education for sustainability
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Calls for the inclusion of sustainable development in the business curriculum have increased significantly in the wake of the financial crisis and increased concerns around climate change. This has led to the appearance of new initiatives and the development of new teaching approaches. This thesis explores business education at the upper secondary school level in Sweden following the inclusion of the concept of sustainable development in the curriculum. Drawing on poststructuralist discourse theory, the overarching purpose is to identify the roles of a responsible business person that are articulated in business education and to discuss how these roles could enable students to address sustainability issues. The thesis consists of four studies, based on textbook analyses, teacher interviews and classroom observations. Three categories of roles have been identified, implying that a business person is expected to either adapt to, add or create ethical values. These three categories are compared with the roles indicated in the environmental discourses constructed by Dryzek and the responsibility regimes developed by Pellizzoni. Drawing on Dryzek’s and Pellizzoni’s reasoning about which qualities are important for addressing sustainability issues, it is concluded that the roles identified in the studies could mean that students are unequipped (the adapting role), ill-equipped (the adding role) or better equipped (the creating role) to address uncertain and complex sustainability issues. The articles include empirical examples that illustrate how and in which situations specific roles are articulated, privileged or taken up. The examples also indicate how the scope for business students’ subjectivities are facilitated or hampered. It is suggested that the illustrative empirical examples could be used for critical reflection in order to enhance students’capabilities of addressing uncertain and complex sustainability issues and to improve educational quality in terms of scope for subjectivity.

  • A framework for assessing urban greenery's effects and valuing its ecosystem services
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Management. - : Academic Press. - 0301-4797 .- 1095-8630. ; 205, s. 274-285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ongoing urban exploitation is increasing pressure to transform urban green spaces, while there is increasing awareness that greenery provides a range of important benefits to city residents. In efforts to help resolve associated problems we have developed a framework for integrated assessments of ecosystem service (ES) benefits and values provided by urban greenery, based on the ecosystem service cascade model. The aim is to provide a method for assessing the contribution to, and valuing, multiple ES provided by urban greenery that can be readily applied in routine planning processes. The framework is unique as it recognizes that an urban greenery comprises several components and functions that can contribute to multiple ecosystem services in one or more ways via different functional traits (e.g. foliage characteristics) for which readily measured indicators have been identified. The framework consists of five steps including compilation of an inventory of indicator; application of effectivity factors to rate indicators' effectiveness; estimation of effects; estimation of benefits for each ES; estimation of the total ES value of the ecosystem. The framework was applied to assess ecosystem services provided by trees, shrubs, herbs, birds, and bees, in green areas spanning an urban gradient in Gothenburg, Sweden. Estimates of perceived values of ecosystem services were obtained from interviews with the public and workshop activities with civil servants. The framework is systematic and transparent at all stages and appears to have potential utility in the existing spatial planning processes.

  • The nitrosoamine dephostatin interacts with nitric oxide/cGMP signalling and modulates cytosolic calcium responses in human platelets
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • 1 The effects of the nitrosoamine dephostatin on cytosolic Ca2+ and nitric oxide (NO)/cGMP signallings in human platelets were investigated.2 Dephostatin has been characterised as a protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) inhibitor, and may on that account affect platelet responses. However, western blot analysis revealed that dephostatin (1-100 µM) did not increase tyrosine-specific protein phosphorylation.3 Dephostatin dose-dependently (0.003-3 µM) inhibited thrombin-, thrombin-receptor activating peptide-, and ADP-stimulated rises in cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration, [Ca2+]i. in fura-2-loaded platelets. Surprisingly, higher doses of dephostatin (10-30 µM) augmented thrombin-triggered Ca2+ response. This dual action of dephostatin mainly involved modulation of Ca2+ influx.4 The results revealed that dephostatin antagonised NO/cGMP- and prostaglandin E1/cAMP-mediated inhibition of [Ca2+]1. The action of the thrornbin-neutralising peptide hirudin was, however, unaffected.5 Dephostatin did not affect basal or NO-mediated rises in platelet cGMP content. On the other hand, dephostatin alone directly increased the phosphorylation of ser239 on vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP) and markedly enhanced NO/cGMP-dependent VASP phosphorylation.6 Cell functional studies revealed that dephostatin amplified NO-induced inhibition of platelet aggregation. Opposite to that, dephostatin diminished the inhibitory action of NO on phosphatidylserine exposure.7 In conclusion, the results revealed that dephostatin affects a wide range of mechanisms involved in Ca2+ homeostasis in platelets. These effects are apparently not due to inhibition of PTPs. However, enhancement of VASP phosphorylation represents another important molecular mechanism of dephostatin. Considering NO signalling, the results indicate that dephostatin may be an excellent tool when elucidating the relative importance of inhibition of Ca2+ versus VASP phosphorylation.

  • Finfish Aquaculture: Animal Welfare, the Environment, and Ethical Implications
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1187-7863 .- 1573-322X. ; 26, s. 75-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this review is to assess the ethical implications of finfish aquaculture, regarding fish welfare and environmental aspects. The finfish aquaculture industry has grown substantially the last decades, both as a result of the over-fishing of wild fish populations, and because of the increasing consumer demand for fish meat. As the industry is growing, a significant amount of research on the subject is being conducted, monitoring the effects of aquaculture on the environment and on animal welfare. The areas of concern when it comes to animal welfare have here been divided into four different stages: breeding period; growth period; capturing and handling; and slaughter. Besides these stages, this report includes a chapter on the current evidence of fish sentience, since this issue is still being debated among biologists. However, most biologists are at present acknowledging the probability of fish being sentient creatures. Current aquaculture practices are affecting fish welfare during all four of the cited stages, both on physical and mental levels, as well as on the ability of fish to carry out natural behaviors. The effect fish farming has on the environment is here separated into five different categories: the decline of wild fish populations; waste and chemical discharge; loss of habitat; spreading of diseases; and invasion of exotic organisms. There is evidence of severe negative effects on the environment when looking at these five categories, even when considering the difficulty of studying environmental effects, due to the closely interacting variables. The ethical arguments and scientific evidences here reviewed have not all come to the same conclusions. Nevertheless, the general agreement is that current aquaculture practices are neither meeting the needs of fish nor environment. Thus, the obvious environmental and animal welfare aspects of finfish aquaculture make it hard to ethically defend a fish diet.

  • Effects of a text messaging smoking cessation intervention amongst online help-seekers and primary health care visitors: findings from a randomised controlled trial
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMC Medicine. - : BMC. - 1741-7015. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Smoking continues to be a leading risk factor for several diseases globally. We hypothesised that an intervention delivered via text messages could help individuals who were looking to quit. Methods A two-arm, parallel-groups, randomised controlled trial was employed. Both groups received treatment as usual, with the intervention group also receiving a 12-week text messaging intervention. Participants were adult, weekly or more frequent smokers, recruited online and in primary health care centres. Research personnel were blinded, while participants were not. Primary outcomes were prolonged abstinence and point prevalence of abstinence, 3 and 6 months post-randomisation. All randomised participants were included in analyses. Results Between 18 September 2020 and 16 June 2022, we randomised 1012 participants (intervention: 505, control: 507). Outcome data was available for 67% (n = 682) of participants at 3 months and 64% (n = 643) at 6 months. At 3 months, the odds ratio (OR) of prolonged abstinence was 2.15 (95% compatibility interval [CoI] = 1.51; 3.06, probability of effect [POE] > 99.9%, p < 0.0001), and for point prevalence of abstinence, it was 1.70 (95% CoI = 1.18; 2.44, POE = 99.8%, p = 0.0034) in favour of the text messaging intervention. At 6 months, the OR of prolonged abstinence was 2.38 (95% CoI = 1.62; 3.57, POE > 99.9%, p = < 0.0001), and for point prevalence, it was 1.49 (95% CoI = 1.03; 2.14, POE = 98.3%, p = 0.0349) in favour of the text messaging intervention. Analyses with imputed data were not markedly different. Conclusions Amongst general population help-seekers-who on average had smoked for 25 years-access to a 12-week text messaging intervention produced higher rates of self-reported smoking abstinence in comparison to treatment as usual only. The intervention could be part of the societal response to the burden which smoking causes; however, findings are limited by risk of bias due to attrition, self-reported outcomes, and lack of blinding.

  • Ingår i: Feminist Media Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0777 .- 1471-5902. ; 9:4, s. 477-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past two decades, an increasing number of young women have taken the tools of media production into their own hands; feminist zines have evolved into a medium for transnational dialogue, community building, and networking. In focusing on the Plotki Femzine (2006, 2007), a Central and Eastern European (CEE) feminist print and online zine project, we use the theoretical framework of ?rhizomatic media? to problematize existing scholarship on feminist zines. Much of this scholarship sees zines as venues that construct a sense of ?authenticity? through the use of the autobiographical voice and an outright rejection of mainstream media practices. Considering the rhizomatic processes of alternative knowledge production in Plotki publication, we draw on post-structuralist gossip theory to examine the Plotki Femzine as a site of feminist discourse. In particular, we show how the Plotki Femzine builds cross-border collaboration and "spreads rumours" of a feminist kind.

  • Remediation of Contaminated Marine Sediment Using Thin-Layer Capping with Activated Carbon-A Field Experiment in Trondheim Harbor, Norway
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 45:14, s. 6110-6116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In situ amendment of contaminated sediments using activated carbon (AC) is a recent remediation technique, where the strong sorption of contaminants to added AC reduces their release from sediments and uptake into organisms. The current study describes a marine underwater field pilot study in Trondheim harbor, Norway, in which powdered AC alone or in combination with sand or clay was tested as a thin-layer capping material for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated sediment. Several novel elements were included, such as measuring PAH fluxes, no active mixing of AC into the sediment, and the testing of new manners of placing a thin AC cap on sediment, such as AC+clay and AC+sand combinations. Innovative chemical and biological monitoring methods were deployed to test capping effectiveness. In situ sediment-to-water PAH fluxes were measured using recently developed benthic flux chambers. Compared to the reference field, AC capping reduced fluxes by a factor of 2-10. Pore water PAH concentration profiles were measured in situ using anew passive sampler technique, and yielded a reduction factor of 2-3 compared to the reference field. The benthic macrofauna composition and biodiversity were affected by the AC amendments, AC + clay having a lower impact on the benthic taxa than AC-only or AC + sand. In addition, AC + clay gave the highest AC recoveries (60% vs 30% for AC-only and AC + sand) and strongest reductions in sediment-to-water PAH fluxes and porewater concentrations. Thus, application of an AC-clay mixture is recommended as the optimal choice of the currently tested thin-layer capping methods for PAHs, and more research on optimizing its implementation is needed.

    • In this paper, we investigate the volume-amplified magnetic nanobead detection assay with respect to bead size, bead concentration and bead oligonucleotide surface coverage in order to improve the understanding of the underlying microscopic mechanisms. It has been shown that: (i) the immobilization efficiency of the beads depends on the surface coverage of oligonucleotides, (ii) by using lower amounts of probe-tagged beads, detection sensitivity can be improved and (iii) using small enough beads enables both turn-off and turn-on detection. Finally, biplex detection was demonstrated.

    • Generating global protein expression profiles, including also membrane proteins, will be crucial for our understanding of biological processes in health and disease. In this study, we have expanded our antibody microarray technology platform and designed the first human recombinant antibody microarray for membrane proteins targeting crude cell lysates and tissue extracts. We have optimized all key technological parameters and successfully developed a setup for extracting, labeling and analyzing non-fractionated membrane proteomes under non-denaturing conditions. Finally, the platform was also extended and shown to be compatible with simultaneous profiling of both membrane proteins and water-soluble proteins.

  • Policy instruments towards a sustainable waste management
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - Basel : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 5:3, s. 841-881
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to suggest and discuss policy instruments that could lead towards a more sustainable waste management. The paper is based on evaluations from a large scale multi-disciplinary Swedish research program. The evaluations focus on environmental and economic impacts as well as social acceptance. The focus is on the Swedish waste management system but the results should be relevant also for other countries. Through the assessments and lessons learned during the research program we conclude that several policy instruments can be effective and possible to implement. Particularly, we put forward the following policy instruments: “Information”; “Compulsory recycling of recyclable materials”; “Weight-based waste fee in combination with information and developed recycling systems”; “Mandatory labeling of products containing hazardous chemicals”, “Advertisements on request only and other waste minimization measures”; and “Differentiated VAT and subsidies for some services”. Compulsory recycling of recyclable materials is the policy instrument that has the largest potential for decreasing the environmental impacts with the configurations studied here. The effects of the other policy instruments studied may be more limited and they typically need to be implemented in combination in order to have more significant impacts. Furthermore, policy makers need to take into account market and international aspects when implementing new instruments. In the more long term perspective, the above set of policy instruments may also need to be complemented with more transformational policy instruments that can significantly decrease the generation of waste.

  • Bioturbation-Driven Release of Organic Contaminants from Baltic Sea Sediments Mediated by the Invading Polychaete Marenzelleria neglecta.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 42:4, s. 1058-1065
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Baltic Sea sediments are among the world’s most polluted regarding eutrophication and contamination. Eutrophication-induced hypoxia has caused depletion of bioturbating macrofauna in vast areas, producing laminated sediments. We investigated if reoxygenation and colonization by the invading deep-burrowing polychaete Marenzelleria neglecta may cause an augmented contaminant release from Baltic Sea sediments. Intact laminated sediment cores were exposed either to in situ hypoxia, reoxygenation, or reoxygenation combined with bioturbating M. neglecta. The release fluxes of particle-associated (NPart) and dissolved (NDiss) PCBs and chlorinated pesticide residues (POPs) were quantified (GC-ECD) after 85 d along with contaminant concentrations in sediment and biota. Lavoisier-based mass transfer coefficients (Kf) were calculated from NDiss. Sediment contaminant concentrations were high (ΣPCB7: 42–52 ng gsediment−1 dw) due to emissions from Stockholm. NDiss always exceeded NPart by an order of magnitude. Bioturbation enhanced NDiss and Kf from hypoxic sediments 0.7 – 3 times while reoxygenation alone had no significant effect. M. neglecta accumulated low amounts of contaminants but significantly stimulated aquatic release of bioavailable sequestered contaminants. Bioturbation should be included in aquatic contaminant fate models. We advise to consider quiescent pollutant sources and possible ecological shifts when aiming to restore eutrophicated aquatic environments.

  • Genetik i fiktion
  • 2006
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This licentiate’s thesis is concerned with how genetics is depicted and used in fictional stories. From a perspective that combines science and technology studies with cultural studies, it analyses narratives that deal with, or contain images of, genetics and gene technology. The empirical material consists of four narratives, two movies and two novels: Andrew Niccol’s film Gattaca (1997), Ang Lee’s film Hulk (2003), Margaret Atwood’s novel Oryx and Crake (2003), and P.C. Jersild’s Swedish novel Geniernas återkomst ("Return of the Geniuses", 1987). The thesis has two main parts, where the first part introduces theories and perspectives on biology and narrative, whereas the second part presents the four analyses of fictional narratives. The first part is divided into two sections. Section one is concerned with biology (primarily molecular biology), ideals of objectivity, and the relation¬ship between science and technology. I argue for a perspective where science and technology are intimately interwoven, especially in the case of the “new biology”. This section defines the concepts of genetics and gene technology, a definition that relies more on how the concept of gene is used in the analysed narratives than the scientific discipline of genetics. Then follows in the second section a discussion of narration and fiction, two cen¬tral concepts in this thesis. With the aid of structuralist literary studies, the process of narrative production and meaning making is described, and an argument is made for viewing fiction as a quality of narratives rather than a genre of its own. Part two is also made up of two main sections. In the first of these, the four narratives are analysed separately. The narratives are viewed as examples of different perspectives on fictitious genetics: Gattaca is analysed as an exam¬ple of a genetically governed society, Hulk as a genetically manipulated individual, Oryx and Crake exemplifies the genetic apocalypse, and Genier¬nas återkomst depicts a future society where genetics has been out¬dated, banned and expelled. The second part analyses genetics and gene technology as narrative devices. Here, the four narratives are no longer separated. In¬stead, they are compared and used to exemplify a number of sometimes contradictory narrative uses of genetics and gene technology. The narratives make use of both public understandings of science and technology and the complexity of modern biology and biotechnology to balance credibility and the fantastic. Six main functions of genetics are identified in the narratives, some of wich are functions of negotiation – like the negotiations between the credible and the incredible, between threat and opportunity, between control and the loss of control, between micro and macro, and between nature and technology. Other functions are based upon genetics and gene technology being described – and understood – as both new and having potentially pro¬found consequences for society and human¬kind. In the end, genetics in fic¬tion turns out to have very little to do with genetics and gene technology as scientific discourses. Instead these sciences seem to be used because of their complexity and aura of both “cutting-edge” sciences and “code of life”, in order to negotiate a number of narrative problems and oppositions.

  • Ullpellets från outnyttjad ull på Gotland – ett utvecklingsprojekt med fokus på pelleteringsprocessen
  • 2022
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Wool pellets from unutilized wool on Gotland – a development project with focus on the pelleting processA large proportion of the wool produced in Sweden is discarded as it cannot be used by the textile industry. Before the wool can be used it must be collected and washed. However, a large quantity of low-quality wool is mixed in with the high-quality wool and thus enter the processing industry when the wool is collected. As it is not usable by the industry, this low-quality wool simply takes up space and lowers the processing speed as it must be separated from the high-quality wool and be discarded, lowering the economic output of the wool processing industry. However, unutilized wool has the potential to be used as a slow-acting fertilizer, soil amendment, or mulch for cultivation purposes. Pelleting is an attractive method of processing biomass into a product that is efficient and easy to handle, transport and use. Pellet presses are commercially available from small farm-scale to large-scale facilities. The aim of the project was to develop and adapt the pelleting technology to work with Swedish wool that cannot be used to produce yarns or other textiles. The goal was to develop methods and technology for pre-treating or disintegrate the wool, adapt the input and pelleting part of the pelleting process to work with low-quality wool and try to optimize the quality of the pellets. Furthermore, the goal was to analyze the plant nutrient value and strength of the pellets produced and create a packaging prototype. During the project, additional goals were added: to automate the process from pre-treatment to packaging as much as possible, and to use literature to determine if the pelletizing process is likely to be sufficient enough to hygenize the wool from weed seeds. An automated production line from wool to finished pellets has been built at Ullkontoret (Sweden’s only full-scale wool washing facility). Coarse and fine shredding, feeding and regulation of feed capacity function well, while the pelleting pressing does not work sufficiently well. Wool pelleting of only low-quality wool proved technologically challenging and neither the modified pellet presses nor the imported wool pellet press worked, despite modifications. In other European countries, this problem is solved by mixing in higher quality wool. Further technological development of wool pelleting is needed to obtain a system that can handle all types of low-quality Swedish wool. Literature studies and nutritional analyses confirm that wool pellets work well as a slow-acting fertilizer (often in mixture due to a very low phosphorus content), but the potential of wool as a soil amendment, mulch and snail repellent requires more studies. Pelleting is probably not enough to hygenize the wool from weed seeds. It is a challenge to produce a packaging that both meets the quality requirements of the product (e.g., maintain the right humidity, preventing odors) and at the same time meets the demands of the type of environmentally conscious consumer who is the main target group for a nature-based product.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of ageing temperature, silverloading and type of reducing agent on the lean NOxreduction over silver–alumina catalysts was investigatedwith n-octane and bio-diesel (NExBTL) as reducing agent. The catalysts (2 and 6 wt% Ag–Al2O3) were prepared witha sol–gel method including freeze drying and the evaluationof NOx reduction and aging were performed using asynthetic gas-flow reactor. The results indicate a relatively high NOx reduction for both reducing agents. The hydrothermally treated 6 wt% Ag–Al2O3 sample displays amaximum NOx reduction of 78 % at 350 C for n-octane asreductant and the corresponding value for NExBTL is60 %. Furthermore, the catalysts show high durability andan increase in activity for NOx reduction after ageing attemperatures up to 650 C,with n-octane as reducingagent.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Functional bowel disorders (FBDs) are common disorders that are characterized by various combinations of abdominal pain and/or discomfort, bloating and changes in bowel habits. At present, diagnosing FBDs often incurs considerable health-care costs, partly because unnecessary investigations are performed. Patients are currently diagnosed as having an FBD on the basis of a combination of typical symptoms, normal physical examination and the absence of alarm features indicative of an organic gastrointestinal disease. Basic laboratory investigations, such as a complete blood count, measurement of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serological tests for celiac disease, are useful in the initial evaluation. No further investigations are needed for most patients who have typical symptoms and no alarm symptoms. The most important alarm symptoms include signs of gastrointestinal bleeding, symptom onset above 50 years of age, a family history of colorectal cancer, documented weight loss and nocturnal symptoms. The presence of alarm symptoms obviously does not exclude an FBD, but further investigation is needed before confirmation of the diagnosis. For patients with predominant and severe diarrhea, a more thorough diagnostic work-up should normally be considered, including colonoscopy with colonic biopsies and a test for bile-acid malabsorption.

  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pathophysiology of IBS is complex and still incompletely known. Both central and peripheral factors are thought to contribute to the symptoms of IBS, including psychosocial factors, abnormal GI motility and secretion, and visceral hypersensitivity. In this review the involvement of peripheral factors in the pathophysiology in IBS is reviewed. Altered GI motility is commonly found in this patient group, even though a specific motor pattern has been hard to find. Colonic transit has been found to be of relevance for the bowel habit of the patient. Abnormal gas handling within the gut is also commonly seen, and seems to be one, but not the only factor responsive for bloating. There is also limited evidence supporting the presence of abnormal GI secretion in IBS, but its relevance for symptoms remains unclear. Visceral hypersensitivity is currently considered to be one of the most important pathophysiological factors in IBS. It can be modulated by several external and internal factors and recent studies support an association between colorectal sensitivity and the symptoms reported by the patients, especially pain.

  • Teaching International Students How to Avoid Plagiarism : Librarians and Faculty in Collaboration
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The journal of academic librarianship. - : Elsevier. - 0099-1333 .- 1879-1999. ; 40:3/4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents how a plagiarism component has been integrated in a Research Methodology course for Engineering Master students at Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden. The plagiarism issue was approached from an educational perspective, rather than a punitive. The course director and librarians developed this part of the course in close collaboration. One part of the course is dedicated to how to cite, paraphrase and reference, while another part stresses the legal and ethical aspects of research. Currently, the majority of the students are international, which means there are intercultural and language aspects to consider. In order to evaluate our approach to teaching about plagiarism, we conducted a survey. The results of the survey indicate a need for education on how to cite and reference properly in order to avoid plagiarism, a result which is also supported by students' assignment results. Some suggestions are given for future development of the course.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since 1982, when the first baby conceived by in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in Sweden was born, Swedish legislation on assisted reproduction has gradually become more liberal and inclusive. Today, gamete donation and IVF are permitted not only for heterosexual couples, but also for lesbian couples and single women, and embryo donation is expected to become legalized shortly which will further increase the chances for involuntarily childless people to become parents. In recent years, the possibility of allowing surrogacy has been debated increasingly, with strongly polarized arguments both for and against it. Recent reports by the Swedish National Council of Medical Ethics and a governmental investigation agreed that the possibilities for involuntarily childless people should be increased in several ways, but reached opposing conclusions concerning surrogacy. While the former argued in favour of it (in certain circumstances), the latter argued against it (in all circumstances). One difference in their argumentation centred around the issue of bodily autonomy and self-determination in surrogacy. These two opposing conclusions raise crucial questions about what the principle of reproductive intent implies for questions concerning reproductive autonomy in surrogacy. Does it matter when in the reproductive process the declaration of intent is made, and what happens if we consider the possibility of changing intentions in relation to autonomy and self-determination in surrogacy? Is the mater est rule compatible with an intersectional, queer and non-discriminatory approach to reproductive justice, and if so, under what circumstances? Are there any possibilities of thinking beyond the ‘either/or’ between these two principles?
