  • Measurements of g(41+,22+) in 70,72,74 ,76Ge: Systematics of low-lying structures in 30≤Z≤40 and 30≤N≤50 nuclei
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 88:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The interplay between single-particle and collective excitations in the 30 ≤Z≤ 40 and 30 ≤N≤ 50 even-even isotopes has been examined in light of recent new measurements of magnetic moments of 41+, 22+, and 21+ states. Purpose: The g factors of the 41+ and 22+ states in the 72,74,76Ge isotopes have been measured for the first time and the g(21+) values have been remeasured. Methods: The transient field (TF) technique in inverse kinematics with a variety of targets has been applied, following Coulomb excitation of the relevant states. The data have been analyzed within the framework of the IBA-II model. Large-scale shell-model calculations have been performed within the p3/2,p1/2,f 5/2,g9/2 orbital space for both protons and neutrons with the JUN45 and JJ4B interactions. Results: The measured Ge g factors were compared to the g factors of the low-lying states of the neighboring Zn, Ge, Se, Kr, and Sr isotopes. The results were evaluated in the context of the systematics of g factors in the A∼80 region. Conclusions: The predictions based on the classic collective model and the interacting boson model IBA-II agree with the experimental results. No evidence for shell closure was found for neutrons at N=38 or N=40. © 2013 American Physical Society.

  • Exploring the stability of super heavy elements: First measurement of the fission barrier of 254No
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: EPJ Web of Conferences. - : EDP Sciences. - 2101-6275 .- 2100-014X. ; 66
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma-ray multiplicity and total energy emitted by the heavy nucleus 254No have been measured at 2 different beam energies. From these measurements, the initial distributions of spin I and excitation energy E * of 254No were constructed. The distributions display a saturation in excitation energy, which allows a direct determination of the fission barrier. 254No is the heaviest shell-stabilized nucleus with a measured fission barrier. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2014.

  • Fission Barrier of Superheavy Nuclei and Persistence of Shell Effects at High Spin: Cases of No-254 and Th-220
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 113:26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the first measurement of the fission barrier height in a heavy shell-stabilized nucleus. The fission barrier height of No-254 is measured to be B-f = 6.0 +/- 0.5 MeV at spin 15 (h) over bar and, by extrapolation, B-f = 6.6 +/- 0.9 MeV at spin 0 (h) over bar. This information is deduced from the measured distribution of entry points in the excitation energy versus spin plane. The same measurement is performed for Th-220 and only a lower limit of the fission barrier height can be determined: B-f (I) > 8 MeV. Comparisons with theoretical fission barriers test theories that predict properties of superheavy elements.

  • Stability and synthesis of superheavy elements: Fighting the battle against fission - example of No-254
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: EPJ Web of Conferences. - : EDP Sciences. - 2101-6275 .- 2100-014X. - 9782759890118 ; 131
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Superheavy nuclei exist solely due to quantum shell effects, which create a pocket in the potential-energy surface of the nucleus, thus providing a barrier against spontaneous fission. Determining the height of the fission barrier and its angular-momentum dependence is important to quantify the role that microscopic shell corrections play in enhancing and extending the limits of nuclear stability. In this talk, the first measurement of a fission barrier in the very heavy nucleus No-254 will be presented.

  • Recoil distance method lifetime measurements in Cd-107 and Pd-101.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Nuclear Structure Astrophysics, and Reactions: FINUSTAR. - MELVILLE, NY : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0735403236 ; , s. 391-393
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Preliminary lifetime values have been measured for a number of near-yrast states in the odd-A transitional nuclei Cd-107 and Pd-103. The reaction used to populate the nuclei of interest was Mo-98(C-12, 3nx alpha)Cd-107, Pd-103, with the beam delivered by the tandem accelerator of the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory at an incident beam energy of 60 MeV. Our experiment was aimed at the investigation of collective excitations built on the unnatural parity, v h(11/2) orbital, specifically by measuring the B(E2) values of decays from the excited levels built on this intrinsic structure, using the Doppler Recoil Distance Method. We report lifetimes and associated transition probabilities for decays from the 15/2(-) and the 19/2(-) states in Cd-107 and the first measurement of the 15/2- state in Pd-103. These results suggest that neither a simple rotational or vibrational interpretation is sufficient to explain the observed structures.

  • Intrinsic state lifetimes in Pd-103 and Cd-106,Cd-107
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 76:6, s. 064302-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mean-lifetimes, tau, of various medium-spin excited states in Pd-103 and Cd-106,Cd-107 have been deduced using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift technique and the Differential Decay Curve Method. In Cd-106, the mean-lifetimes of the I-pi=12(+) state at E-x=5418 keV and the I-pi=11(-) state at E-x=4324 keV have been deduced as 11.4(17)ps and 8.2(7)ps, respectively. The associated beta(2) deformation within the axially-symmetric deformed rotor model for these states are 0.14(1) and 0.14(1), respectively. The beta(2) deformation of 0.14(1) for the I-pi=12(+) state in Cd-106 compares with a predicted beta(2) value from total Routhian surface (TRS) calculations of 0.17. In addition, the mean-lifetimes of the yrast I-pi = 15(-)/2 states in Pd-103 (at E-x=1262 keV) and Cd-107 (at E-x=1360 keV) have been deduced to be 31.2(44)ps and 31.4(17)ps, respectively, corresponding to beta(2) values of 0.16(1) and 0.12(1) assuming axial symmetry. Agreement with TRS calculations are good for Pd-103 but deviate for that predicted for Cd-107.

  • Lifetime determination of excited states in Cd-106
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica B. - 0587-4254 .- 1509-5770. ; 38:4, s. 1385-1388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two separate experiments using the Differential Decay Curve Method have been performed to extract mean lifetimes of excited states in 106 Cd. The inedium-spin states of interest were populated by the Mo-98(C-12, 4n) Cd-106 reaction performed at the Wright Nuclear Structure Lab., Yale University. From this experiment, two isomeric state mean lifetimes have been deduced. The low-lying states were populated by the Mo-96(C-13, 3n)Cd-106 reaction performed at the Institut fur Kernphysik, Universitat zu Koln. The mean lifetime of the I-pi = 2(1)(+) state was deduced, tentatively, as 16.4(9) ps. This value differs from the previously accepted literature value from Coulomb excitation of 10.43(9) ps.

  • alpha-Synuclein expression and Nrf2 deficiency cooperate to aggravate protein aggregation, neuronal death and inflammation in early-stage Parkinson's disease
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Human Molecular Genetics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 21:14, s. 3173-3192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although -synuclein (-SYN) aggregation is a hallmark of sporadic and familial Parkinsons disease (PD), it is not known how it contributes to early events of PD pathogenesis such as oxidative and inflammatory stress. Here, we addressed this question in a new animal model based on stereotaxic delivery of an adeno-associated viral vector (rAAV) for expression of human -SYN in the ventral midbrain of mice lacking the transcription factor Nrf2 (Nrf2(/)). Two months after surgery, Nrf2(/) mice exhibited exacerbated degeneration of nigral dopaminergic neurons and increased dystrophic dendrites, reminiscent of Lewy neurites, which correlated with impaired proteasome gene expression and activity. Dopaminergic neuron loss was associated with an increase in neuroinflammation and gliosis that were intensified in Nrf2(/) mice. In response to exogenously added -SYN, Nrf2(/) microglia failed to activate the expression of two anti-inflammatory genes, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate quinone oxidorreductase-1 (NQO1). This impaired Nrf2 response correlated with a shift in the microglial activation profile, towards increased production of proinflammatory markers, IL-6, IL-1 and iNOS and reduced phagocytic capacity of fluorescent beads, and lower messenger RNA levels for TAM receptors Axl and Mer. Postmortem brain tissue samples from patients in early- to middle-stage progression of PD showed increased HO-1 expression in astrocytes and microglia, suggesting an attempt of the diseased brain to compensate these hallmarks of PD through activation of the Nrf2 pathway. This study demonstrates that -SYN and Nrf2 deficiency cooperate on protein aggregation, neuroinflammation and neuronal death and provides a bifactorial animal model to study early-stage PD.
