  • Att navigera på en lokal skolmarknad:en studie av valfrihetens geografi i tre skolor
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores and analyses how school choices are made and perceived in an urban local school market. The thesis uses concepts from the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and theories working with the concept of place and space. Using ethnographical methods, it explores the geography of school choice, while the empirical material describes and analyses school choices in a local school market structured by socio-economic as well as symbolic boundaries. The five empirical chapters discuss and analyse imaginary geographies, school habitus, hot and cold knowledge, and symbolic boundaries. The concluding chapter discusses the main findings and addresses some questions regarding how to make the educational system more equitable.

  • Laser-induced fluorescence used in localizing atherosclerotic lesions
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Lasers in Medical Science. - 0268-8921. ; 4:3, s. 171-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated laser-induced fluorescence frompost mortem human arteries in order to find spectroscopic properties allowing discrimination between normal and atherosclerotic vessel wall. A pulsed nitrogen laser emitting light at a wavelength of 337.1 nm was used as an excitation source. The fluorescence spectrum from 370 to 700 nm was captured and analysed by an optical multichannel analyser. Dimensionless contrast functions were formed by using characteristic spectral features at 390, 415, 480, 580 and 600 nm. All samples were investigated in scans across a region where normal as well as diseased vessel wall appeared. The types of plaque were histopathologically divided into four groups, of which three could be singled out using one or more of our spectroscopic criteria. We also investigated the different layers of the normal and diseased vessel wall in order to determine the various contributions to the fluorescence signal. Furthermore, plasma emission spectra were recorded while ablating the normal as well as the diseased vessel wall with an excimer laser, emitting radiation at 308 nm, thus detecting the change in spectral characteristics during the ablation process down into deeper layers.

  • Heparinization of cell surfaces with short peptide-conjugated PEG-lipid regulates thromboinflammation in transplantation of human MSCs and hepatocytes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Acta Biomaterialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1742-7061 .- 1878-7568. ; 35, s. 194-205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Infusion of therapeutic cells into humans is associated with immune responses, including thromboinflammation, which result in a large loss of transplanted cells\ To address these problems, heparinization of the cell surfaces was achieved by a cell-surface modification technique using polyethylene glycol conjugated phospholipid (PEG-lipid) derivatives. A short heparin-binding peptide was conjugated to the PEG-lipid for immobilization of heparin conjugates on the surface of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and human hepatocytes. Here three kinds of heparin-binding peptides were used for immobilizing heparin conjugates and examined for the antithrombogenic effects on the cell surface. The heparinized cells were incubated in human whole blood to evaluate their hemocompatibility by measuring blood parameters such as platelet count, coagulation markers, complement markers, and Factor Xa activity. We found that one of the heparin-binding peptides did not show cytotoxicity after the immobilization with heparin conjugates. The degree of binding of the heparin conjugates on the cell surface (analyzed by flow cytometer) depended on the ratio of the active peptide to control peptide. For both human MSCs and hepatocytes in whole-blood experiments, no platelet aggregation was seen in the heparin conjugate-immobilized cell group vs. the controls (non-coated cells or control peptide). Also, the levels of thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT), C3a, and sC5b-9 were significantly lower than those of the controls, indicating a lower activation of coagulation and complement. Factor Xa analysis indicated that the heparin conjugate was still active on the cell surface at 24 h post-coating. It is possible to immobilize heparin conjugates onto hMSC and human hepatocyte surfaces and thereby protect the cell surfaces from damaging thromboinflammation. Statement of Signigficance We present a promising approach to enhance the biocompatibility of therapeutic cells. Here we used short peptide-conjugated PEG-lipid for cell surface modification and heparin conjugates for the coating of human hepatocytes and MSCs. We screened the short peptides to find higher affinity for heparinization of cell surface and performed hemocompatibility assay of heparinized human hepatocytes and human MSCs in human whole blood. Using heparin-binding peptide with higher affinity, not only coagulation activation but also complement activation was significantly suppressed. Thus, it was possible to protect human hepatocytes and human MSCs from the attack of thromboinflammatory activation, which can contribute to the improvement graft survival. • Barns samspel bortom förskolans väggar : Om yngre barns samspel och platsskapande på förskolegården och i en mobil förskola
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The general aim of this thesis is to explore the relations between children’s interaction and places within preschool activities. How children’s interaction opportunities are conditioned by the physical and social environment in the preschool yard (study I), as well as place-making processes in various contexts in mobile preschool activities (studies II and III), are examined within the framework of this purpose. As these three sub-studies have different research focuses, they use different theoretical perspectives. In study I, special attention is given to how the physical environment and teachers emerge in the contexts of children’s (aged 1–3 years) interaction in the preschool yard. Study II focuses on how children (aged 3–4 years) use the spatiality of a mobile preschool to create places in a recurring fantasy play. In study III, the focus is directed on both children’s place-making within fantasy play and how children and teachers create “place” together in a mobile preschool. Destination choices can be part of place-making processes of a mobile preschool; therefore, which aspects considered as important, in choosing a destination, are investigated. The first study starts from sociocultural perspectives on children’s interaction (e.g. Vygotsky, 1930/ 1995). Taking an abductive approach, the concept of artifacts (Wartofsky, 1979) and concepts from an environmental psychological perspective (see Gump, 1969; Westlander, 1999; Wicker, 1985, 1987) are added to explore how the social and physical environments relate to opportunities for different interactions. The results show how children reveal "interaction junctions" and "interaction swathes" in their activities within the preschool yard.  In order to investigate place-making within a mobile preschool, the second and third studies combine a relational perspective on spatiality (Massey, 2005) with a sociology of childhood perspective that emphasizes children’s agency and collective activities, such as fantasy play (e.g. Corsaro, 2015). The results show how children create their own “play-places” in their place-making and how teachers choose destinations.  Through its chosen perspectives and focus on younger preschoolers, this thesis provides further knowledge on how opportunities for interaction can arise in the preschool yard. Furthermore, this thesis reveals a new kind of spatiality within the preschool – that is, a mobile preschool – by using a relational perspective on place-making. Thus, this thesis contributes additional knowledge in the interdisciplinary field of Childhood Studies regarding children’s (possible) interaction in diverse places.

  • Gender disparities in the pharmacological treatment of cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus in the very old : an epidemiological, cross-sectional survey
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Drugs & Aging. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1170-229X .- 1179-1969. ; 28:12, s. 993-1005
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: There are many reports of disparities in health and medical care both between women and men and between various age groups. In most cases, men receive better treatment than women and young and middle-aged people are privileged compared with the old and the very old. Cardiovascular morbidity and diabetes mellitus are common, increase with age and are often treated extensively with drugs, many of which are known to have significant adverse effects.OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyse gender differences in the pharmacological treatment of cardiovascular disease and diabetes among very old people.METHODS: The study took the form of an epidemiological, cross-sectional survey. A structured interview was administered during one or more home visits, and data were further retrieved from medical charts and interviews with relatives, healthcare staff and other carers. Home-dwelling people as well as people living in institutional care in six municipalities in the county of Västerbotten, Sweden, in 2005-7 were included in the study. Half of all people aged 85 years, all of those aged 90 years and all of those aged ≥95 years living in the selected municipalities were selected for inclusion in the study. In total, 467 people were included in the present analysis. The main study outcome measures were medical diagnoses and drug use.RESULTS: In total, women were prescribed a larger number of drugs than men (mean 7.2 vs 5.4, p < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression models adjusted for age and other background variables as well as relevant medical diagnoses (hypertension, heart failure) showed strong associations between female sex and prescriptions of thiazide diuretics (odds ratio [OR] 4.4; 95% CI 1.8, 10.8; p = 0.001), potassium-sparing diuretics (OR 3.5; 95% CI 1.4, 8.7; p = 0.006) and diuretics as a whole (OR 1.8; 95% CI 1.1, 2.9; p = 0.021). A similar model, adjusted for angina pectoris, showed that female sex was associated with prescription of short-acting nitroglycerin (OR 3.7; 95% CI 1.6, 8.9; p = 0.003). However, more men had been offered coronary artery surgery (p = 0.001). Of the participants diagnosed with diabetes, 55% of the women and 85% of the men used oral antihyperglycaemic drugs (p = 0.020), whereas no gender difference was seen in prescriptions of insulin.CONCLUSIONS: Significant gender disparities in the prescription of several drugs, such as diuretics, nitroglycerin and oral antihyperglycaemic drugs, were observed in this study of very old people. In most cases, women were prescribed more drugs than men. Men more often had undergone coronary artery surgery. These disparities could only in part be explained by differences in diagnoses and symptoms.

  • Children's collective embodiment-Mobility practices and materialities in mobile preschools
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Population, Space and Place. - : Wiley. - 1544-8444 .- 1544-8452. ; 26:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article looks at young children's mobility practices in public spaces within the context of a mobile preschool practice (i.e., a preschool in a bus), with a specific focus on how materialities matter in children's mobilities. Using ethnographic data from a mobile preschool, we argue that the mobile preschool group's mobility should be understood in terms of collective embodiment and the mobile preschool should be viewed as a moving collective body in public space through which children can negotiate their own mobility practices and exercise agency. We show how this collective body is constituted through an assemblage and collaboration of children's and teachers' bodies and material objects. Collective embodiment not only enables and supports children's mobilities in public space but also helps young children to appropriate and claim their democratic right to public space through the visible copresence of bodies and things.

  • Children’s prosthetic citizenship as ‘here-and-now’, ‘not-yet’ and ‘not-here’. the case of the mobile preschool
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Social & Cultural Geography. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1464-9365 .- 1470-1197. ; , s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the case of the mobile preschool we focus on how children’s prosthetic citizenship is constructed in relation to notions of mobility and place in the accounts of Swedish mobile preschool professionals. Mobile preschools are preschools in buses that visit different places in and around the city on an everyday basis. Analysis of interviews and workshop discussions with mobile preschool professionals shows how three different conceptualisations of children’s ‘proper’ citizenship operate in parallel in these accounts – children as ‘not-yet-citizens’, children as ‘not-here-citizens’ and children as ‘here-and-now-citizens’. These different conceptualisations are constructed in relation to the everyday mobility of the mobile preschool and notions of places as more or less beneficial for children’s proper future and Swedish citizenship, and reveal how mobility is not only a consequence of citizenship relations but also constitutive of them. This paper contributes to knowledge on how mobility and notions of place constitute ideas on citizenship, and how forms and geographies of mobility produce subjects as more or less citizen.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Childhood. - : Sage Publications. - 0907-5682 .- 1461-7013. ; 31:1, s. 13-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ideas of nature, nation and childhood are intertwined in Nordic early childhood education. We explore in ethnographic data the ways nature is taught in Swedish mobile preschools. We show how everyday nationalism manifests in the teaching practices of ‘good’ pedagogy in nature. We argue that depending on who is teaching and learning, various constructions of nationhood emerge enabling the re-imagination of a single national imaginary to a plural one.

  • 'Yay, a downhill!': Mobile preschool children's collective mobility practices and 'doing' space in walks in line
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pedagogy. - : Sciendo - De Gruyter. - 1338-1563 .- 1338-2144. ; 9:1, s. 87-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the field of early childhood research children’s mobility is usually discussed only in terms of physical activity in the preschool yard. More seldom is it discussed in terms of mobility practices and how young children move in public spaces. With unique detailed video-ethnographic data on mobile preschools and a new combination of theories on space, mobilities and peer culture this article analyses how young children negotiate mobility practices and engage in embodied learning in the collective preschool routine of walking in line. Two empirical examples of walking in line in contrasting public spaces show how the mobile preschool group moves in space as a collective body co-produced by children’s and teachers’ individual bodies. It is argued that walks in line are not merely a form of ‘transport’ between places but are important as social and learning spaces. While walking in line, children collectively ‘do’ space in diverse ways depending on where and how they move, and in relation to where and when teachers negotiate safety issues. In this process, the spaces, activities and routines alike are transformed.

  • Liposarcoma: outcome based on the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group register.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Cancer. - : Wiley. - 0008-543X .- 1097-0142. ; 113:7, s. 1649-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The aim was to study the clinicopathological characteristics, treatment, and outcome of liposarcoma in an unselected, population-based patient sample, and to establish whether treatment was according to the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group (SSG) treatment guidelines. METHODS: The SSG Pathology Board reviewed 319 liposarcoma cases reported between 1986 and 1998. After the review, 237 patients without metastasis were analyzed for local recurrence rate in relation to surgical margins, radiotherapy, occurrence of metastasis, and survival. RESULTS: Seventy-eight percent of the patients were primarily operated on at a sarcoma center, 45% with wide margins. All patients operated on outside the center had nonwide margins. Low-grade lesions constituted 67% of cases. Despite nonwide surgery, only 58% of high-grade lesions were treated with postoperative radiotherapy. The risk of local recurrence after nonwide surgery, without irradiation, was 47% for high-grade lesions. The estimated 10-year, local recurrence-free and metastasis-free survival in the low-grade group was 87% and 95%, respectively. In the high-grade group, it was 75% and 61%, respectively. Independent adverse prognostic factors for local recurrence were surgery outside a sarcoma center and histological type dedifferentiated liposarcoma. For metastases, they were old age, large tumor size, high grade, and histological type myxoid liposarcoma with a round cell component. Radiotherapy showed significant effect on local recurrence rate for the same grade and margin. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with liposarcoma should be treated at specialized centers. Postoperative radiotherapy decreases the local recurrence rate. To maintain quality and provide support for further trials, reporting to quality registers is crucial.

  • Vilan i förskolan 1910-2013 : Visuella material och visuell metodologi
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to explore preschool naptime during the period 1910–2013 through visual materials, films and photographs produced by different actors for various purposes at various historical times, and to develop a visual methodology that works with complex visual materials. Even though naptime is central to everyday life in preschool, it is an activity that is rarely a focus of Early Childhood Education research.  The empirical data derives from two separate but interrelated studies, the first a video ethnographic field study and the second an archival ethnographic study. Both studies include films and photographs that visualise the material environments and social interactions that take place during preschool naptime.A theoretical framework based on ethnomethodology, visual studies, childhood studies and the history of childhood studies is used. The concept the look of is a theoretical and analytical focus as the photographic image contains visual information about what things and actions look like. The look of children’s and adults’ participation in naptime, the material objects and the preschool environment are the focus when scrutinising the visual data of the study to gain knowledge about how embodied actions, along with the material and spatial design of the preschool environment, form practices at naptime. The thesis takes a post-positivist stance towards the photographic image.A transdisciplinary methodology, the visual remake, is developed for visual analysis and is used as a tool for comparisons, visualisation of results and reflection. A visual remake maintains the visual aspects of the data in order to keep them visible throughout the research process. It is a tool that visualises observable findings and conceptualises a reflection process through images, and not exclusively via the written word. The study provides knowledge about everyday life in preschool. The results show how the material and spatial organisation of the room and the participants’ embodied actions in this environment constitute naptime in both historical and contemporary preschools. There are recurrent patterns in the social interaction, as well as similarities in the design of the environment that are stable over time. These are the ways in which the participants use their bodies and interact through embodied interactions. The comparative visual analyses, focusing on continuity and change, suggest that some of these practices can be theorised as path-dependent. The present-day study shows that children constitute a peer culture within naptime, often through secondary adjustments to institutional and adult-structured order. Although the ideal naptime is visualised in the historical materials, it is possible to trace the same sort of naptime peer culture. There are features in the design of the beds used during preschool naptime that are typical of the preschool institution, and this design and the overall organisation of naptime have a path-dependence to ideals in the half-day preschools.Methodologically, the thesis expands our knowledge of how different visual materials can serve as sources in ECE research and how a research design focusing on the comparison of present-day and historical data opens up space for new research questions.

  • Protection of the developing brain with trophic factors. Signaling through serine/threonine kinase pathways
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Perinatal asphyxia still constitutes a clinical hazard associated withconsiderable neurologic morbidity. There is today no therapy in clinical use toprotect the brain after such insult.Aims: The overall aim was to investigate the involvement of the GH/IGF-I axis indevelopment of HI brain damage, by studying the neuroprotective effects of thetrophic factors IGF-I, GH and hexarelin in the neonatal brain, and their respectivemechanism of action in vivo. The possible involvement of serine/threonine kinasesin the development of brain injury was also addressed. Methods: Seven-day-old rats or nine-day-old mice were subjected to HI. Animalswere sacrificed at different time points for evaluation of brain damage, enzymeactivity measurements, immunoblotting, immunocytochemistry, RT-PCR andsolution hybridization assays. Results: IGF-I mRNA was increased after HI and after GH treatment. GH, IGF-Iand Hexarelin treatment all offered some degree of protection after HI. Thisindicates involvement of the GH/IGF-I axis in the development of brain damageand in neuroprotection following HI. Both pAkt and pGSK3â substantiallydecreased after HI. Treatment with IGF-I or hexarelin restored these levels andreduced the activation of the apoptotic executioner caspase-3. Moreover, micedeficient in the serine/threonine kinase JNK3 were significantly less damaged afterHI compared to wild-type. The protection was more pronounced in femalecompared to male mice. Conclusions: These results suggest a role for the GH/IGF-I axis in theneurochemical process leading to brain injury after HI. Moreover, reducedphosphorylation of Akt and GSK3â after HI indicate an effect on the PI3-kinasepathway similar to growth factor withdrawal in vitro. This could be an importantfactor in the development of neuronal death after HI with possible activation ofseveral pro-apoptotic mechanisms. Increased phosphorylation of both theseproteins after IGF-I and hexarelin treatment indicate that activation of PI3-kinasepathway is an important mediator of growth factor induced neuronal survival invivo. Reduced susceptibility to HI in JNK3-/- mice indicates involvement of thisserine/threonine kinase in the development of damage in the immature brain.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mobile preschool, a form of preschool practice in a bus, is a new and growing phenomenon in Swedish preschool education. Combining theories of time-spatial organisation and mobility, we critically investigate the implications of transforming traditional stationary preschool practice into a mobile preschool. Our findings show that the social order of the mobile preschool is ‘being on the move’ and that the travelling shapes the time-spatial organisation, with major implications for daily routines and activities. In our analyses we show how constant travelling characterises the mobile preschool as a social practice with (i) logistics and choice of place prevailing over daily planning, (ii) creation of time and space for embodied habits, (iii) teachers as attendants and children as passengers, and (iv) walking in lines. However, mobility and time-spatial constraints are also co-constructed and intimately connected with the participants’ agency, since both children and teachers are actively ‘doing time’ and ‘creating space’ within the dominant structure of ‘being on the move’.

  • Ingår i: European Early Childhood Education Research Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1350-293X .- 1752-1807. ; 28:3, s. 375-390
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using video-ethnographic data from a 'try-on day' in a bus-based mobile preschool, we discuss how children with different levels of experience collaborate with one another and with pedagogues to socialize newcomers into an ongoing community. Analyses show how pedagogues create moments of collective orientation and, besides through verbal instructions, invite newcomers to participate in core activities with older children. The novices engage in the priming event by intent participation, while the older children assume, and are assigned, the role of more experienced participants - 'old-timers'. In this collective socialization, old-timers, children, and pedagogues strive to create a smooth transition for novices, particularly by stressing the specificity of participating in a preschool that is mobile and located in a bus. The results illustrate how becoming a mobile preschool child entails understanding and mastering competences such as safely riding the bus, eating meals in the bus, and walking in line in diverse spaces.

  • Mobility, learning and interaction in the mobile preschool.
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mobile preschool, a preschool in a bus, was introduced in Sweden in 2007 in order to solve problems with lack of space for children in preschools. During the last years many different cities in Sweden have made use of this way of organizing preschools. The bus hosts about 20 children and 3 teachers (bus driver included), starts and finishes the day in a stationary preschool and drives to different locations about half an hour drive away. The locations they visit are described as ´base camps where children explore nature together with their teachers’. So far this practice has not yet been evaluated and in this newly started project we therefore ask questions as; How is the mobile preschool organized in time and space? How are the movements and moorings that characterize the mobility of the preschool bus used for children’s learning? How is knowledge and values constructed in everyday interaction in the mobile preschool? With theoretical starting points in time-spatial geography, mobility as moving and mooring, and learning in interaction we investigate the mobile preschool as a didactic space. The methods used are i) digital technology for mapping the bus’ movement and mooring, which locations in the urban area are used and how, ii) video ethnography for studying learning in interaction between teacher - children as well as interaction children - children. In the presentation we discuss methodology and present preliminary result from a pilot study of the mobile preschool in one Swedish town.

  • Mobility, learning and interaction in the mobile preschool.– a reaction to a child-unfriendly city?
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We are living in an urban world and more and more children today are growing up in cities. Also in Europe, urban childhoods are becoming the standard. At the same time, spaces for children are decreasing in European cities due to densification processes, traffic, changing life styles as well as changing mobilities. In this paper, we will discuss the phenomenon of the Swedish mobile preschool and whether we can understand this as a reaction to the child-unfriendly city. More specifically we will discuss the mobile preschool in terms of children’s right to participate and take part in the city.   The mobile preschool, a preschool in a bus, was introduced in Sweden in 2007. Originally from Denmark where the bus provided inner-city children access to nature it can be understood as a reaction to the child-unfriendly city. In Sweden however the mobile preschool is described as targeting acute (indoor) space problems but also a way of providing new learning environments for children and to practise outdoor education. We will discuss the mobile preschool in relation to the following questions; is the mobile preschool a way of bringing the children to nature? And is the mobile preschool a potential for children as urban citizens? Even though the city itself is not considered child-friendly the bus is regarded as giving opportunities to provide children with child-friendly spaces within the city and its surroundings. Our study shows that the mobile preschool both is a way of bringing the children to nature spaces within the otherwise child-unfriendly city. It is also a way of giving children the opportunity to navigate with help from the bus and learn to use a diversity of child-friendly spaces in the city, not only nature. We see that the mobile preschool has a potential for encouraging children’s active citizenship.

  • No-go- area, no-go- school : community discourses, local school market and children's identity work

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on how 11-year-old children in a segregated Swedish suburb at the time of choosing school for Year 6 in the 9-year compulsory school used current community discourses in their identity work, while constructing an 'us' in relation to 'them'. The segregation in the suburb was strengthened by the process of a school market, with competition among the schools. Even if the formal choice was made by the parents the study shows that the choosing process was also an important part of the children's identity work. The results show differentiations among the children with a majority of children involved in re-constructing both a neighbourhood and the neighbourhood's school as no-go-areas while other children rather choose that school.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since about a decade there is a new phenomenon in Nordic early childhood education and care, the mobile preschool. It is an ECEC practice conducted on a bus that travels to various locations to perform everyday preschool activities and routines. With theory of policy enactment this article analyzes workshop discussions with mobile preschool professionals. The results show two main policies within mobile preschools; safety as well as experiential learning in a variety of learning environments. While discussing how to handle these policies, the professionals construct the mobile preschool simultaneously as ordinary and unique in relation to ordinary stationary preschools.

  • Us and them - children's identiy work and social geography in a Swedish school yard.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Ethnography and Education. - : Taylor and Francis. - 1745-7823 .- 1745-7831. ; 4:1, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article focusses on constructions of social identities in school and how children in their identity work (re-)construct common and segregated places in the school yard. Data were drawn from an ethnographic research in the daily lives of children aged 11–13. The fieldwork consisted of traditional ethnographic field work as well as children's own narratives in the form of photographs and maps. Children's agency and narratives are seen as identity performances and simple questions, like where children like to spend their time (or not), what their favourite places are, what activities they do and who they do them together with, have provided insight into the complexity of the processes of identity work as well as of segregation. The analyses focus on how the children use and refer to different places in their identity work, while constructing ‘we-in-our-class’ in the ‘King’ pitch, best friends, as well as ‘us’ in relation to ‘them’. The result shows how identity work is situated and takes place in places that invite participation in various activities, but is also constructed by the children and their agency.
