  • Vilan i förskolan 1910-2013 : Visuella material och visuell metodologi
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to explore preschool naptime during the period 1910–2013 through visual materials, films and photographs produced by different actors for various purposes at various historical times, and to develop a visual methodology that works with complex visual materials. Even though naptime is central to everyday life in preschool, it is an activity that is rarely a focus of Early Childhood Education research.  The empirical data derives from two separate but interrelated studies, the first a video ethnographic field study and the second an archival ethnographic study. Both studies include films and photographs that visualise the material environments and social interactions that take place during preschool naptime.A theoretical framework based on ethnomethodology, visual studies, childhood studies and the history of childhood studies is used. The concept the look of is a theoretical and analytical focus as the photographic image contains visual information about what things and actions look like. The look of children’s and adults’ participation in naptime, the material objects and the preschool environment are the focus when scrutinising the visual data of the study to gain knowledge about how embodied actions, along with the material and spatial design of the preschool environment, form practices at naptime. The thesis takes a post-positivist stance towards the photographic image.A transdisciplinary methodology, the visual remake, is developed for visual analysis and is used as a tool for comparisons, visualisation of results and reflection. A visual remake maintains the visual aspects of the data in order to keep them visible throughout the research process. It is a tool that visualises observable findings and conceptualises a reflection process through images, and not exclusively via the written word. The study provides knowledge about everyday life in preschool. The results show how the material and spatial organisation of the room and the participants’ embodied actions in this environment constitute naptime in both historical and contemporary preschools. There are recurrent patterns in the social interaction, as well as similarities in the design of the environment that are stable over time. These are the ways in which the participants use their bodies and interact through embodied interactions. The comparative visual analyses, focusing on continuity and change, suggest that some of these practices can be theorised as path-dependent. The present-day study shows that children constitute a peer culture within naptime, often through secondary adjustments to institutional and adult-structured order. Although the ideal naptime is visualised in the historical materials, it is possible to trace the same sort of naptime peer culture. There are features in the design of the beds used during preschool naptime that are typical of the preschool institution, and this design and the overall organisation of naptime have a path-dependence to ideals in the half-day preschools.Methodologically, the thesis expands our knowledge of how different visual materials can serve as sources in ECE research and how a research design focusing on the comparison of present-day and historical data opens up space for new research questions.

    • CLARIN is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), which aims at (a) making extensive language-based materials available as primary research data to the humanities and social sciences (HSS); and (b) offering state-of-the-art language technology (LT) as an eresearch tool for this purpose, positioning CLARIN centrally in what is often referred to as the digital humanities (DH). The Swedish CLARIN node Swe-Clarin was established in 2015 with funding from the Swedish Research Council. In this paper, we describe the composition and activities of Swe-Clarin, aiming at meeting the requirements of all HSS and other researchers whose research involves using text and speech as primary research data, and spreading the awareness of what Swe-Clarin can offer these research communities. We focus on one of the central means for doing this: pilot projects conducted in collaboration between HSS researchers and Swe-Clarin, together formulating a research question, the addressing of which requires working with large language-based materials. Four such pilot projects are described in more detail, illustrating research on rhetorical history, second-language acquisition, literature, and political science. A common thread to these projects is an aspiration to meet the challenge of conducting research on the basis of very large amounts of textual data in a consistent way without losing sight of the individual cases making up the mass of data, i.e., to be able to move between Moretti’s “distant” and “close reading” modes. While the pilot projects clearly make substantial contributions to DH, they also reveal some needs for more development, and in particular a need for document-level access to the text materials. As a consequence of this, work has now been initiated in Swe-Clarin to meet this need, so that Swe-Clarin together with HSS scholars investigating intricate research questions can take on the methodological challenges of big-data language-based digital humanities.

  • Endotoxin levels in Estonian and Swedish house dust and atopy in infancy
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Allergy. - : Wiley. - 1365-2222 .- 0954-7894. ; 33:3, s. 295-300

    • Background Immune responses, including those to allergens, may be T helper (Th)2 skewed in newborns. In order to redress the fetal Th1/Th2 imbalance, Th1-stimulating factors, such as bacterial endotoxin, may be required. The increasing prevalence and severity of atopic diseases in industrialized countries, which are in marked contrast with the low prevalence of allergy among children in the formerly socialist countries of Europe, have been suggested to be caused by a reduced microbial stimulation.Aim To relate the endotoxin levels in house dust from two countries with a low (Estonia) and a high (Sweden) prevalence of allergy to the development of atopic disease and sensitization in the children during the first 2 years of life. Methods The study included 108 children from Tartu, Estonia and 111 children from Linköping, Sweden. Skin prick tests were performed at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months of age, and questionnaires were distributed to the families. At 24 months, a paediatrician examined the children. Dust samples were collected from mattresses and carpets and the endotoxin concentration was determined by a chromogenic Limulus assay. Results The endotoxin levels were higher in Estonian than in Swedish house dust (median levels 29 (range 0.25–280) and 14 (range 0.25–99) EU/mg dust, respectively, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the levels were inversely related to the development of atopic disease and sensitization in the Swedish, but not in the Estonian, children. Conclusions The low prevalence of atopic disease in Estonia may, at least in part, be related to the high endotoxin levels in this country. The findings support that high levels of endotoxin, or other bacterial products with Th1-stimulating properties, might protect children from developing atopic disease.

  • Identifying Speakers and Addressees in Dialogues Extracted from Literary Fiction
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Eleventh International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation (LREC-2018). - : European Language Resources Association. - 9791095546009 ; , s. 817-824
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes an approach to identifying speakers and addressees in dialogues extracted from literary fiction, along with a dataset annotated for speaker and addressee. The overall purpose of this is to provide annotation of dialogue interaction between characters in literary corpora in order to allow for enriched search facilities and construction of social networks from the corpora. To predict speakers and addressees in a dialogue, we use a sequence labeling approach applied to a given set of characters. We use features relating to the current dialogue, the preceding narrative, and the complete preceding context. The results indicate that even with a small amount of training data, it is possible to build a fairly accurate classifier for speaker and addressee identification across different authors, though the identification of addressees is the more difficult task.

  • Effects of Nutrient Management Scenarios on Marine Eutrophication Indicators : A Pan-European, Multi-Model Assessment in Support of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Marine Science. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-7745. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel pan-European marine model ensemble was established, covering nearly all seas under the regulation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), with the aim of providing a consistent assessment of the potential impacts of riverine nutrient reduction scenarios on marine eutrophication indicators. For each sea region, up to five coupled biogeochemical models from institutes all over Europe were brought together for the first time. All model systems followed a harmonised scenario approach and ran two simulations, which varied only in the riverine nutrient inputs. The load reductions were evaluated with the catchment model GREEN and represented the impacts due to improved management of agriculture and wastewater treatment in all European river systems. The model ensemble, comprising 15 members, was used to assess changes to the core eutrophication indicators as defined within MSFD Descriptor 5. In nearly all marine regions, riverine load reductions led to reduced nutrient concentrations in the marine environment. However, regionally the nutrient input reductions led to an increase in the non-limiting nutrient in the water, especially in the case of phosphate concentrations in the Black Sea. Further core eutrophication indicators, such as chlorophyll-a, bottom oxygen and the Trophic Index TRIX, improved nearly everywhere, but the changes were less pronounced than for the inorganic nutrients. The model ensemble displayed strong consistency and robustness, as most if not all models indicated improvements in the same areas. There were substantial differences between the individual seas in the speed of response to the reduced nutrient loads. In the North Sea ensemble, a stable plateau was reached after only three years, while the simulation period of eight years was too short to obtain steady model results in the Baltic Sea. The ensemble exercise confirmed the importance of improved management of agriculture and wastewater treatments in the river catchments to reduce marine eutrophication. Several shortcomings were identified, the outcome of different approaches to compute the mean change was estimated and potential improvements are discussed to enhance policy support. Applying a model ensemble enabled us to obtain highly robust and consistent model results, substantially decreasing uncertainties in the scenario outcome. ABSTRACT A novel pan-European marine model ensemble was established, covering nearly all seas under the regulation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), with the aim of providing a consistent assessment of the potential impacts of riverine nutrient reduction scenarios on marine eutrophication indicators. • Integrating Prosody into an Account of Discourse Structure
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis a study of discourse segmenting is carried out, which investigates both segment boundaries and segment content. The results are related to discourse theory. We study the questions of how the prosody and the text structure influence subjects' annotations of discourse boundaries and discourse prominence. The hypothesis was that the annotations would be influenced by the discourse type. Two studies were carried out. 1) a study of boundary annotation, 2) a study of prominence annotation. All studies were made on four different discourse types, scripted and spontaneous monologue and scripted and spontaneous dialogue. In addition the annotations were carried out under two different conditions 1) based on transcripts alone and 2) based on transcripts together with access to the speech signal. The results indicate that the boundary annotations were less dependent on the speech signal than the prominence annotations. It seems that subjects have segmented on the basis of the text structure, while prominence to a great extent was annotated on the basis of the prosody. In the case of boundary markings the boundary context in terms of parts of speech differs across speaking styles, which is not the case for the prominences. A separate study of segment intentions was also made, and it was found that the interpretation of a specific intention, questions, seems to be arrived at primarily on the basis of the text structure. However, in some cases also the prosody affects the annotations. The picture that emerges indicates a distribution of labour between text structure and prosody, governed by the principle of economy. In cases where the boundaries were less well definied, as in e.g. spontaneous monologue, the pattern of the prominences was clearer. In cases where the boundaries were more clearly indicated, as in read aloud text, the prominences were less clearly communicated. The findings were interpreted within Grosz and Sidner's (1986) discourse theory. It is suggested that differences in the segmenting strategy originating from the interaction of text structure and prosody can be expressed as differences in the contributions from the different components of discourse suggested in the framework of Grosz and Sidner (1986).

  • Regulatory mutations in TBX3 disrupt asymmetric hair pigmentation underlying Dun camouflage colour in horses
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 48:2, s. 152-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dun is a wild-type coat color in horses characterized by pigment dilution with a striking pattern of dark areas termed primitive markings. Here we show that pigment dilution in Dun horses is due to radially asymmetric deposition of pigment in the growing hair caused by localized expression of the T-box 3 (TBX3) transcription factor in hair follicles, which in turn determines the distribution of hair follicle melanocytes. Most domestic horses are non-dun, a more intensely pigmented phenotype caused by regulatory mutations impairing TBX3 expression in the hair follicle, resulting in a more circumferential distribution of melanocytes and pigment granules in individual hairs. We identified two different alleles (non-dun1 and non-dun2) causing non-dun color. non-dun2 is a recently derived allele, whereas the Dun and non-dun1 alleles are found in ancient horse DNA, demonstrating that this polymorphism predates horse domestication. These findings uncover a new developmental role for T-box genes and new aspects of hair follicle biology and pigmentation.

  • Studies of prostaglandin E2 formationin human monocytes
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Prostaglandin (PG) E2 is an eicosanoid derived from the polyunsaturated twenty carbon fatty acid arachidonic acid (AA). PGE2 has physiological as well as pathophysiological functions and is known to be a key mediator of inflammatory responses. Formation of PGE2 is dependent upon the activities of three specific enzymes involved in the AA cascade; phospholipase A2 (PLA2), cyclooxygenase (COX) and PGE synthase (PGEs). Although the research within this field has been intense for decades, the regulatory mechanisms concerning the PGE2 synthesising enzymes are not completely established. PGE2 was investigated in human monocytes with or without lipopolysaccharide (LPS) pre-treatment followed by stimulation with calcium ionophore, opsonised zymosan or phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). Cytosolic PLA2a (cPLA2a) was shown to be pivotal for the mobilization of AA and subsequent formation of PGE2. Although COX-1 was constitutively expressed, monocytes required expression of COX-2 protein in order to convert the mobilized AA into PGH2. The conversion of PGH2 to the final product PGE2 was to a large extent due to the action of microsomal PGEs-1 (mPGEs-1). In addition, experiments with inhibitors of extracellular signal regulated kinase and p38 activation, indicated that phosphorylation of cPLA2α was markedly advantageous for the formation of PGE2. Ellagic acid, a natural polyphenolic compound found in fruits and nuts, was shown to inhibit stimuli induced release of PGE2 in human monocytes. The effect of ellagic acid was not due to a direct effect on the activities of the enzymes but rather to inhibition of the LPS-induced protein expression of COX-2, mPGEs-1 and cPLA2a.

  • Ingår i: Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. - : Springer. - 0933-7954 .- 1433-9285. ; 49:5, s. 831-839
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Depressive disorders are common among the very old, but insufficiently studied. The present study aims to identify risk factors for depressive disorders in very old age.The present study is based on the GERDA project, a population-based cohort study of people aged a parts per thousand yen85 years (n = 567), with 5 years between baseline and follow-up. Factors associated with the development of depressive disorders according to DSM-IV criteria at follow-up were analysed by means of a multivariate logistic regression. At baseline, depressive disorders were present in 32.3 % of the participants. At follow-up, 69 % of those with baseline depressive disorders had died. Of the 49 survivors, 38 still had depressive disorders. Of the participants without depressive disorders at baseline, 25.5 % had developed depressive disorders at follow-up. Baseline factors independently associated with new cases of depressive disorders after 5 years were hypertension, a history of stroke and 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale score at baseline. The present study supports the earlier findings that depressive disorders among the very old are common, chronic and malignant. Mild depressive symptoms as indicated by GDS-15 score and history of stroke or hypertension seem to be important risk factors for incident depressive disorders in very old age.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Workshop on Prosody in Speech Recognition and Understanding.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we investigate the characteristics of pausing in speakers' production and listeners' interpretation in three different speaking styles in Swedish: elicited spontaneous dialogues, professional and non-professional news reading. Considerable attention is given to the positions in which pauses can appear, in particular their discourse context regarding theme shift. We show that the acoustic silent intervals that are perceived by the listeners correlate with the discourse structure, while perceived pauses having an acoustic silence in the speech signal, correlate to the duration of the acoustic silence. The results show clear differences between the speaking styles. In reading, the majority of acoustic pauses are perceived and the majority of both the acoustic and perceived pauses are located at theme shift. In dialogues, on the other hand, few acoustic pauses are perceived by the listeners and the majority of both the acoustic and perceived pauses are positioned at theme continuation. Furthermore, where many pauses are perceived by the listeners, such as in non-professional reading and dialogues, we find long acoustic silent intervals.

  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Stockholm University Strindberg Corpus (SUSC) consists of seven novels by August Strindberg annotated for parts-of-speech with morphological analysis and lemmas. The corpus is freely available.SUSC consists of approximately 400 000 tokens annotated for parts-of-speech, including morphological analysis and lemmas, using the Stockholm-Umeå Corpus tag set in PAROLE-format. The annotated texts have been converted to XML which makes the corpus searchable with corpus analysis tools such as Xaira. This allows for e.g., searching for concordances with a specific wordform, part-of-speech and/or lemma, for pattern matching, and collocation extraction. The current version of the corpus includes seven works which can be classified as autobiographical:Tjänstekvinnans son (The son of a servant, 1886-87)Han och hon (He and she, 1919)Inferno (Inferno, 1897)Legender and Jakob brottas (Legends and Jacob wrestles, 1898)Fagervik och Skamsund (Fair haven and Foulstrand, 1902)Ensam (Alone, 1903)We are aware of three other electronic collections of Strindberg’s works: Projekt Runeberg, Litteraturbanken and Språkbanken. While these are valuable resources, SUSC is an important addition because, unlike the first two, it is linguistically annotated, and unlike the third, the data is available for download and thus can be fully inspected and processed using the researcher’s software of choice. Even more importantly, researchers can add their analyses as new layers of annotation of the corpus.

    • We have approached the works of August Strindberg from  a computational linguistic point of view, resulting in The Stockholm University Strindberg Corpus, consisting of seven of Strindberg's autobiographical works with linguistic annotation. The corpus is freely available for research. We use this corpus for three quantitative studies of Strindberg’s work: in the first, we describe the novels included in the corpus by keywords; in the second, we compare Strindberg’s use of emotionally charged words with selected prose of both his contemporaries and present-day authors; in the third, we explore the semantic prosody of KVINNA (“woman”) and MAN (“man”).

  • Safeguarding from surgical site infections : A mutual responsibility between the patient, caregiver and the perioperative healthcare leaders
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Aim: The overall aim of this thesis is to describe and explore preventive measuresand risks for surgical site infections. Methods: Study I, a registry based and observational design study, includes 35 056cases analysed for risks for reoperation caused by periprosthetic joint infection afterelective total hip arthroplasty. Data are analysed with Cox regression. Study II is ahypothesis testing study and uses an experimental design. Comparative statisticswere used to compare contamination of agar plates after 15 hours for twoconditions: single drape covering or double drape covering. Study III, an interviewstudy that uses a reflective lifeworld research methodology, includes 15 operatingroom nurses who were interviewed regarding the phenomenon of intraoperativeprevention of surgical site infections. Study IV, also an interview study, includes 14orthopaedic patients who were interviewed regarding their experience with at-homepreoperative skin disinfection. Data were analysed using manifest content analysisaccording to Graneheim and Lundman. Results: Study I shows an increased risk of reoperation caused by periprostheticjoint infection after planned total hip arthroplasty for age, male sex, morbidity (ASAclass III-IV), obesity, lateral approach to the hip, general anaesthesia, and prolongedoperative time. Study II shows reduced contamination of agar plates after 15 hoursstorage with double drape covering compared to single drape covering. Study IIIshows that prevention of surgical site infections is a struggle against an invisible anddelayed threat. Another key finding is the importance of operating room nurseslegitimacy and collaboration within the operating team to prevent surgical siteinfections. Study IV describes the patients’ experiences with at-home preoperativeskin disinfection. The result points out obstacles with the procedure and theimportance of identifying those patients who are not suitable for self-care regardingthis preventive measureConclusion: Safeguarding from surgical site infections is a mutual responsibility ofthe patient, caregivers, and perioperative healthcare leaders. Therefore, this complexphenomenon is difficult to assess. Prevention of surgical site infections needs to bea collaborative effort involving patient, caregivers, and perioperative healthcareleaders. The high-risk care of performing surgery requires confident and safeprofessionals in each position. Well-functioning teamwork and collaboration arekey factors for ensuring stability inside the operating room and providing conditionsfor safe care.

  • Depressive Disorders and Religious Engagement in Very Old People
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Gerontology and geriatric medicine. - : Sage Publications. - 2333-7214. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To examine associations between religious engagement and depressive disorders in very old people.Method: This cross-sectional study uses data from the Umea 85+/Gerontological Regional Database (GERDA) study. Every other 85-year-old, every 90-year-old, and everyone more than 95 years from eight municipalities in northern Sweden and Finland were invited: 1,014 persons accepted participation. Data were gathered using questionnaires and assessment scales during structured home visits. Results: The prevalence of depressive disorders was 35.8%. In a logistic regression model, several factors were adjusted for, such as demographic variables including social factors, diseases, and cognitive and physical functional level. A high level of self-reported religious engagement was independently associated with not having depressive disorders (odds ratio [OR] = 0.58, confidence interval [CI] = [0.38, 0.89]). After stratifying by gender, religious engagement was only significant for women (OR = 0.49, CI = [0.29, 0.82]).Discussion: There is an association between a high level of religious engagement and being free from diagnosis of depressive disorders among very old women.
