  • Contacts, Identity and Hybridity : objects from South-western Finland in the Birka Graves
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Identity Formation and Diversity in the Early Medieval Baltic and Beyond : Communicators and Communication - Communicators and Communication. - 1569-1462. - 9789004292178 ; 75, s. 205-258
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study concludes that there were contacts between Birka and western Finland throughout more or less the whole existence of the town. The earliest evidence of these contacts is from the 760s and the latest from the middle of the tenth century. Unlike other eastern material in Birka, which became much more frequent during the second half of the ninth century the contacts with Finland were constant through time. However, the contacts might not have been very extensive compared to contacts with regions even further east. The study shows that, of the roughly 1,100 graves on Björkö, 13 contained costume details from Finland and 34 pottery of Baltic Finnish ware. The number of graves with objects from Finland amounts to roughly 4% of all the graves in Birka. However, it should be pointed out that this is the minimum amount since there might be pottery, especially coarse ware for cooking and storage, and objects with provenance from the Finnish mainland that cannot be singled out from local material or material from other regions. Interestingly enough, Finnish objects were most frequent in cremation graves under a mound, a form of grave that was very common in the Mälaren valley, and it is likely that the people who performed the funeral ritual followed local customs. However, a large share of objects from Finland occurred in chamber graves as well. This type of grave is believed to represent an elite of warriors and merchants with long-distance contacts. Some of the chamber graves with artefacts from Finland are also among the richest in Birka as regards the amount of grave goods. This shows that members in the leading circle in the town, men as well as women, were part of a network that had direct or indirect contacts with groups on the Finnish mainland. It is generally held impossible to identify ethnic groups based on the grave material in Birka. It is therefore suggested that migration to Birka as well as encounters taking place in the town prompted a dialogue in which different cultural elements were put together in an eclectic way and where local elements became entangled with foreign ones. It is likely that ethnic identities were played down in the town in favour of the construction and negotiation of new identities and affiliations.

    • The maritime expansion of Scandinavian populations during the Viking Age (about ad750–1050) was a far-flung transformation in world history1,2. Here we sequenced the genomes of 442humans from archaeological sites across Europe and Greenland (to a median depth of about 1×) to understand the global influence of this expansion. We find the Viking period involved gene flow into Scandinavia from the south and east. We observe genetic structure within Scandinavia, with diversity hotspots in the south and restricted gene flow within Scandinavia. We find evidence for a major influx of Danish ancestry into England; a Swedish influx into the Baltic; and Norwegian influx into Ireland, Iceland and Greenland. Additionally, we see substantial ancestry from elsewhere in Europe entering Scandinavia during the Viking Age. Our ancient DNA analysis also revealed that a Viking expedition included close family members. By comparing with modern populations, we find that pigmentation-associated loci have undergone strong population differentiation during the past millennium, and trace positively selected loci—including the lactase-persistence allele of LCT and alleles of ANKA that are associated with the immune response—in detail. We conclude that the Viking diaspora was characterized by substantial transregional engagement: distinct populations influenced the genomic makeup of different regions of Europe, and Scandinavia experienced increased contact with the rest of the continent.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The excavations of one of the plots in the Black Earth at Birka revealed an unusually large number of objects associated with long-distance eastern contacts. Among the objects was a Volga Bulgarian pot and a hoard containing Volga Bulgarian imitations of dirhams. The surprisingly high proportion of Volga Bulgarian coins in the hoard indicates that the person(s) who lived on the plot in the mid tenth century may actually have spent time in Volga Bulgaria. It is no coincidence that the finds point to this region. In the tenth century several important trade routes converged in this area, where Rus’, Khazarian and Muslim merchants came to trade.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on objects from mainland Finland retrieved in the graves of the Viking Age town Birka in the Mälalen valley, Sweden. The main questions posed in the article are what people were buried with these items and what can be concluded about their cultural identity. In the article the artefacts from mainland Finland are presented as well as their contexts. An examination of the find assemblages shows that the material culture in the graves had a heterogeneous origin. The graves in Birka with objects from the Finnish mainland can thus be said to display cultural hybridity.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In research on Birka strong focus has since long been directed towards long-distance contacts with Western as well with and Northeastern Europe (todays Russia, Belarus and Ukraine). The great attention paid to west- and east European contacts has likely contributed to that contacts with Finland have fallen out of the discussions. However as seen from studies of the pottery in Birka the Baltic Finnish ware constitute the second largest group when it comes to imports to the town. In the graves on Björkö there are finds of this type of ware as well as of dress details deriving from or showing heavy influence from the Finnish mainland. Some of these finds derive from the most lavishly furnished chamber graves in Birka, indicating that the elite in the town were part of a network that was directly or indirectly connected to groups on the Finnish mainland. Besides Baltic Finnish pottery or dress details from Finland these graves also contained objects such as weights, scales and Islamic coins – items indicating an affiliation to groups involved in the sale and exchange of goods. Finds of standardized weights in south western Finland is a clear indication that this region was part of a supra regional network in the Viking Age just like Birka. Objects from Finland found in Birka on one hand and objects from Scandinavian and central Sweden found in Finland on the other confirm that there has been a close connection between the Mälaren region and south western Finland. Probably products such as furs distributed by the elite in Vakka Suomi attracted groups in eastern Sweden and Birka. However the elite in Birka might also have had other reasons for maintaining contacts with groups in south western Finland. People in south western Finland were linked to routes and networks spanning much further east and by extension also to the riches of the Caliphate.

The author maintains that new dendrochronological dating of the tower could mean that founder of this building piece was not one of the male members of the important Bjälbo dynasty, but Ingrid Ylva the mother of Birger Jarl.

  • Isotopes and Human Burials at Viking Age Birka and the Mälaren Region, East Central Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Anthropological Archaeology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0278-4165. ; 49 (2018), s. 19-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Isotopic proveniencing has been applied to human inhumations and cremations as well as fauna from the Viking Age site of Birka and the surrounding Mälaren region, located in east-central Sweden. Human enamel frominhumations has been measured for strontium, oxygen, and carbon isotope ratios (petrous bone from cremations was measured for strontium only) to obtain information on mobility and diet. Seven graves from the larger Mälaren region and several at Birka had distinctive grave goods thought to have originated in Finland. The isotopic values from these graves indicate that they may have been local individuals. The faunal remains from the Mälaren region corresponded closely with samples from Birka providing a baseline for strontium isotopic ratios in this area. At the site of Birka, two distinct groups of burials can be identified among the measured values, along with several outliers. The data suggest that Birka was a multi-ethnic settlement in the Viking period, consistent with historical sources and concomitant with its role as an important center of economy and trade on the east coast of Sweden.

  • Mellan gåva och marknad : handel, tillit och materiell kultur under vikingatid
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The view of the exchange and trade that took place during the Viking Age has varied considerably. This variation is obvious from a scrutiny of how one and the same place, Birka, is described by different scholars over a period of a hundred years. Two very polarized pictures of Birka appear: A town with a mostly free market-oriented trade or an emporium with an administered commodity exchange controlled by the elite/king and with no market principles involved. This thesis aims at examining how these two polarized stereotypes have come into existence and at presenting a more varied picture. Other questions posed in this dissertation are geared to what we can say on the basis of material culture about the market sphere during the Viking Age. What was the character and practice of commercial transactions during the period? How were trust and stabilizing mechanisms in trade created? Who were the players in trade and what type of social relations occurred in the market sphere? The material point of departure for the discussions about the character and practice of commercial transactions during the Viking Age consists above all of the cubo-octahedral weights and the cubo-octahedral design elements which can be associated with means of payment and the weighing of precious metals. Jewellery, such as penannular brooches, and other items of material culture which can carry messages about identity and group affiliation serve as a starting-point for discussions about actors in trade, social relations, and any organizations that may have existed in the market sphere.

    • At an archaeological excavation in central Lund in the early 1970s a very unusual find was retrieved: a piece of lead with several imprints from a coin die. The motif and the runic inscription on the lead plate indicate that the die derives from Sven Estridsen during his late years as king of Denmark. The find is quite unique. Early coin dies and imprints from coin dies are rare finds in the area that now constitutes Sweden. Despite this, the coin die imprint from early Lund has only been touched on briefly in archaeological literature. In this article a compilation of what is known about the imprint will be presented. Three issues in particular will be highlighted: Why were coins with runic inscriptions minted during Sven Estridsen’s time as king? Who manufactured coins in Lund during the second half of the 11th century? Where in Lund did the production take place during this period? To answer these questions, I will compile findings from various articles and sources. In this way, I will also be able to follow how the state of knowledge has changed over time

  • Ingår i: Finskt Museum. - 0355-1814. ; 2013-2015, s. 44-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article deals with the contacts between the Mälaren region, Sweden, and south western Finland during the Viking Age. The material studied is pegged penannular brooches, an artefact with a core area in Finland. Earlier, these brooches when found outside Finland, have been interpreted as representing weapon bearing migrated Finnish men. Since the material from the Mälaren region does not support this idea an alternative hypothesis is launched. In the article it is argued that some of pegged penannular brooches found in the Mälaren region might have been gifts. Giftgiving and was an important instrument during this time when it came to establishing social contracts and alliances. It is also argued that it was profitable for parts of the elit in the Mälaren region to form alliances with groups in South western Finland. The elite in Finalnd were not only middle men when it came to fur trade, they also had knowledge of regions further east leading to the trade routes that connected northern Europe with the Caliphate .

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ALE. - 0345-0708. ; 2018:2/3, s. 41-52

    • This article discusses the emergence of the episcopal see in Växjö. Contrary to previous research, which has been focused on written sources only, this article also discusses the archaeological record. The result implies that vivid connections between Scania, Denmark and southern Småland can be traced in the Late Iron Age and Early Middle Ages. This is shown by similarities in grave types, runic stones and medieval stone churches. The initiative for the new diocese can probably be found in regional elite groups acting in cooperation with the archbishop in Lund.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

    • ‘Altare beate Marie presentacionis’– a new reconstruction of the ruined altar belonging to Archbishop BrostrupBefore the extensive interior alterations of Lund Cathedral in 1833, only six stone altars, four relatively complete retables, and one fragmentary Madonna remained from the once vast amount of Catholic altars. At present only the stone altar in the crypt retains its medieval position, and only the retable of the High Altar is complete with its casing. Of the remaining retables only three main figures were known to have survived, until 1915 when ten minor sculptures were rediscovered, followed by three more in 1992. These thirteen sculptures once belonged to a retable founded by Archbishop Johannes Brostorp in 1483, but are presently incorporated in the High Altar and exhibited in the Lund University Historical Museum. In the adjoining Cathedral Museum, remnants of the casing of the retable have now been discovered as well. Furthermore, a previously unknown sketch of the retable has been found in the Antiquarian-Topographical Archive in Stockholm. In this article the new findings are presented in the light of the primary sources concerning the history and former appearance of the long lost retable of Brostorp, which may now be reconstructed with a greater degree of certainty than has previously been possible.

    • Smallpox, one of the most devastating human diseases, killed between 300 million and 500 million people in the 20th century alone. We recovered viral sequences from 13 northern European individuals, including 11 dated to ~600-1050 CE, overlapping the Viking Age, and reconstructed near-complete variola virus genomes for four of them. The samples predate the earliest confirmed smallpox cases by ~1000 years, and the sequences reveal a now-extinct sister clade of the modern variola viruses that were in circulation before the eradication of smallpox. We date the most recent common ancestor of variola virus to ~1700 years ago. Distinct patterns of gene inactivation in the four near-complete sequences show that different evolutionary paths of genotypic host adaptation resulted in variola viruses that circulated widely among humans.

    • The stone house in Färlöv. A few years ago, in 2009, a previously unknown stone building was found west of the Romanesque church in the village of Färlöv, north-east Scania. In 2011 the Historical Museum in Lund together with the University College of Kristianstad started a research project on the building and its surroundings. Archaeological excavations have shown that the house was built most likely around 1200. The lasting part consists of walls made of gneiss and granite ashlars with parts of interior rooms remaining. An architectural connection between the house and the church, probably built in the late 1100s, appears to exist. In all probability the house was the main building of the medieval manor of Färlöv, known from written fourteenth-century sources.
