  • Successful mobilization of Ph-negative blood stem cells with intensive chemotherapy + G-CSF in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia in first chronic phase
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Leukemia and Lymphoma. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1042-8194 .- 1029-2403. ; 47:9, s. 1768-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to investigate the feasibility of mobilizing Philadelphia chromosome negative (Ph-) blood stem cells (BSC) with intensive chemotherapy and lenograstim (G-CSF) in patients with CML in first chronic phase (CP1). During 1994-1999 12 centers included 37 patients <56 years. All patients received 6 months' IFN, stopping at median 36 (1-290) days prior to the mobilization chemotherapy. All received one cycle of daunorubicin 50 mg/m2 and 1 hour infusion on days 1-3, and cytarabine (ara-C) 200 mg/m2 24 hours' i.v. infusion on days 1-7 (DA) followed by G-CSF 526 microg s.c. once daily from day 8 after the start of chemotherapy. Leukaphereses were initiated when the number of CD 34+ cells was >5/microl blood. Patients mobilizing poorly could receive a 4-day cycle of chemotherapy with mitoxantrone 12 mg/m2/day and 1 hour i.v infusion, etoposide 100 mg/m2/day and 1 hour i.v. infusion and ara-C 1 g/m2/twice a day with 2 hours' i.v infusion (MEA) or a second DA, followed by G-CSF 526 microg s.c once daily from day 8 after the start of chemotherapy. Twenty-seven patients received one cycle of chemotherapy and G-CSF, whereas 10 were mobilized twice. Twenty-three patients (62%) were successfully (MNC >3.5 x 10(8)/kg, CFU-GM >1.0 x 10(4)/kg, CD34+ cells >2.0 x 10(6)/kg and no Ph+ cells in the apheresis product) [n = 16] or partially successfully (as defined above but 1-34% Ph+ cells in the apheresis product) [n = 7] mobilized. There was no mortality during the mobilization procedure. Twenty-one/23 patients subsequently underwent auto-SCT. The time with PMN <0.5 x 10(9)/l was 10 (range 7-49) and with platelets <20 x 10(9)/l was also 10 (2-173) days. There was no transplant related mortality. The estimated 5-year overall survival after auto-SCT was 68% (95% CI 47 - 90%), with a median follow-up time of 5.2 years. We conclude that in a significant proportion of patients with CML in CP 1, intensive chemotherapy combined with G-CSF mobilizes Ph- BSC sufficient for use in auto-SCT.

  • Increasing the equilibrium solubility of dopants in semiconductor multilayers and alloys
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 100:10, s. 105501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have theoretically studied the possibility to control the equilibrium solubility of dopants in semiconductor alloys, by strategic tuning of the alloy concentration. From the modeled cases of C-0 in SixGe1-x, Zn- and Cd- in GaxIn1-xP it is seen that under certain conditions the dopant solubility can be orders of magnitude higher in an alloy or multilayer than in either of the elements of the alloy. This is found to be due to the solubility's strong dependence on the lattice constant for size mismatched dopants. The equilibrium doping concentration in alloys or multilayers could therefore be increased significantly. More specifically, Zn- in a GaxIn1-xP multilayer is found to have a maximum solubility for x=0.9, which is 5 orders of magnitude larger than that of pure InP.

  • Owls lack UV-sensitive cone opsin and red oil droplets, but see UV light at night : Retinal transcriptomes and ocular media transmittance
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Vision Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0042-6989 .- 1878-5646. ; 158, s. 109-119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most diurnal birds have cone-dominated retinae and tetrachromatic colour vision based on ultra-violet/violet-sensitive UV/V cones expressing short wavelength-sensitive opsin 1 (SWS1), S cones expressing short wavelength-sensitive opsin 2 (SWS2), M cones expressing medium wavelength-sensitive opsin (RH2) and L cones expressing long wavelength-sensitive opsin (LWS). Double cones (D) express LWS but do not contribute to colour vision. Each cone is equipped with an oil droplet, transparent in UV/V cones, but pigmented by carotenoids: galloxanthin in S, zeaxanthin in M, astaxanthin in L and a mixture in D cones. Owls (Strigiformes) are crepuscular or nocturnal birds with rod-dominated retinae and optical adaptations for high sensitivity. For eight species, the absence of functional SWS1 opsin has recently been documented, functional RH2 opsin was absent in three of these. Here we confirm the absence of SWS1 transcripts for the Long-eared owl (Asio otus) and demonstrate its absence for the Short-eared owl (Asio flammeus), Tawny owl (Strix aluco) and Boreal owl (Aegolius funereus). All four species had transcripts of RH2, albeit with low expression. All four species express all enzymes needed to produce galloxanthin, but lack CYP2J19 expression required to produce astaxanthin from dietary precursors. We also present ocular media transmittance of the Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo) and Short-eared owl and predict spectral sensitivities of all photoreceptors of the Tawny owl. We conclude that owls, despite lacking UV/V cones, can detect UV light. This increases the sensitivity of their rod vision allowing them, for instance, to see UV-reflecting feathers as brighter signals at night.

  • Försök med decentraliserad online-sökning i litteratur-databaser
  • 1982
  • Ingår i: Tidskrift för dokumentation. - : Svensk förening för informationsspecialister. - 0040-6872. ; 38:4, s. 89-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • DECENTRALIZED MODELS FOR ONLINE LITERATURE RETRIEVAL — A FIELD EXPERIMENT — Online literature retrieval is offered to the academic users via a highly centralized model. In order to test the possibilities to decentralize online services a field experiment was carried out at six university departments. A few persons at each department were introduced to the basic management of literature retrieval and the supply of databases available to them. The interest for using the service was very high and most users were satisfied with the searches. However, many users had problems in making adequate formulations of their search questions. These difficulties were shown to be dependent on the amount of experience from literature retrieval and use of secondary sources as well as the level of education. In general the field experiment was successful both in terms of user saticfaction and the willingness to establish online service at the department level.

  • Informationsutnyttjande inom ett tekniskt specialområde.
  • 1976
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The report presents a case study of information use and communication within an applied technical field concerning terrain- vehicle relations. The patterns of information use are analysed according to a number of factors related to organizational environment, nature of work, personal characteristics, availability of and need for information. The theoretical significance of this approach is that it makes it possible to synthetize a number of earlier studies into a theoretical framework. Prom a practical point of view the analysis should constitute a basis for design of a specialized information service for the field under investigation. The results suggest how to define specific user groups with different patterns of information use to which the information services must be adapted. The use of a specialized information service is analysed. It was found that the publications from this service are used by a majority of the population under study. The information service is also equally used by researchers and practitioners, thus reducing the information gap between these two groups.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The rapid growth of Science and Technology has made the use of scientific information a problem of international concern. To keep abreast of current research the scientist and engineer can use a multitude of information sources. In this study the problem of information use is analysed and a theoretical framework is developed and applied in several case-studies of formal and informal communication. The case-studies include surveys among scientists, engineers and social scientists in different R&D-settings. Information about research is looked upon as a fundamental resource for R&D activities. It is demonstrated that information use and communication behavior are related to research productivity. However the use of both written and oral information sources is limited by barriers related to the individual user, his position in the social structure of the research community and organisation as well as the availability of information resources. In order to improve the use of knowledge it is necessary to integrate the information and documentation functions with the planning and conduct of research. In this context user education and marketing of information resources are important prerequisites. Information search and library use in higher education are analysed and discussed in relation to pedagogical methods and the maintainance of professional competence. Special attention is also given to computerized reference retrieval services and their evaluation.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Hereditas. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1601-5223 .- 0018-0661. ; 151:6, s. 110-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Mendelian Society in Lund was founded in 1910. The initiative came from two young biologists supported by a wide circle of interested plant breeders and academics. Already from the start the society was dominated by the towering personality Herman Nilsson-Ehle. After two active years, the Society went into temporal hibernation until it resumed its activities in spring 1916, when Nilsson-Ehle was on his way to become Sweden's first professor of genetics. One of the aims of the Society was to launch a scientific journal for local scientists directed at an international audience. After a successful fundraising campaign, Hereditas was started in 1920. One of the original instigators of the Mendelian Society, Robert Larsson, became its first editor, and he remained in this position for more than 30 years. Both he and Nilsson-Ehle were fascinating personalities, deeply rooted in their time's scientific and ideological debates.

  • The role of pleiotropy and linkage in genes affecting a sexual ornament and bone allocation in the chicken.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Molecular ecology. - : Wiley. - 1365-294X .- 0962-1083. ; 23:9, s. 2275-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sexual selection and the ornaments that inform such choices have been extensively studied, particularly from a phenotypic perspective. Although more is being revealed about the genetic architecture of sexual ornaments, much still remains to be discovered. The comb of the chicken is one of the most widely recognized sexual ornaments, which has been shown to be correlated with both fecundity and bone allocation. In this study, we use a combination of multiple intercrosses between White Leghorn populations and wild-derived Red Junglefowl to, first, map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for bone allocation and, second, to identify expression QTL that correlate and colocalize with comb mass. These candidate quantitative genes were then assessed for potential pleiotropic effects on bone tissue and fecundity traits. We identify genes that correlate with both relative comb mass and bone traits suggesting a combination of both pleiotropy and linkage mediates gene regulatory variation in these traits.

  • A large-sample assessment of possible association between ischaemic stroke and rs12188950 in the PDE4D gene
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Human Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1018-4813 .- 1476-5438. ; 20:7, s. 783-789
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous reports have shown ambiguous findings regarding the possible associations between ischaemic stroke (IS) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) gene region. The SNP rs12188950 (or SNP45) has often been studied in this context. We performed a multi-centre study involving a large sample of 2599 IS patients and 2093 control subjects from the south and west regions of Sweden to replicate previous studies regarding IS risk and rs12188950. Subjects from Lund Stroke Register (LSR), Malmo Diet and Cancer Study (MDC) and Sahlgrenska Academy Study on Ischemic Stroke (SAHLSIS) were enroled. Subgroups of participants with hypertension and participants <55 years of age, as well as the TOAST subgroups large vessel disease, small vessel disease and cardioembolism, were also assessed. Univariate odds ratios (ORs) and ORs controlling for hypertension, diabetes and current smoking were calculated. We additionally performed a meta-analysis including 10 500 patients and 10 102 control subjects from 17 publications (including the present study). When assessing pooled data from LSR, MDC and SAHLSIS we obtained no association between IS and rs12188950 for all participants (OR=0.93; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.83-1.05). Significant associations were not found for hypertensive participants or participants with age <55, or when separately evaluating patients from the three different TOAST subgroups. The meta-analysis showed no significant overall estimate (OR=0.96; 95% CI: 0.89-1.04) with significant heterogeneity for random effect (P=0.042). No effect from rs12188950 on IS was found from either our pooled multi-centre data or the performed meta-analysis. We did not find any association between the examined subgroups and rs12188950 either. European Journal of Human Genetics (2012) 20, 783-789; doi: 10.1038/ejhg.2012.4; published online 25 January 2012

  • Are 25 SNPs from the CARDIoGRAM study associated with ischaemic stroke?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Neurology. - : Wiley. - 1351-5101. ; 20:9, s. 1284-1291
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and purpose: The Coronary Artery Disease Genome-Wide Replication and Meta-Analysis Study (CARDIoGRAM) reported 25 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on 15 chromosomes to be associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) risk. Because common vascular risk factors are shared between CAD and ischaemic stroke (IS), these SNPs may also be related to IS overall or one or more of its pathogenetic subtypes. Methods: We performed a candidate gene study comprising 3986 patients with IS and 2459 control subjects. The 25 CAD-associated SNPs reported by CARDIoGRAM were examined by allelic association analysis including logistic regression. Weighted and unweighted genetic risk scores (GRSs) were also compiled and likewise analysed against IS. We furthermore considered the IS main subtypes large-vessel disease (LVD), small-vessel disease and cardioembolic stroke [according to Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST)] separately. Results: SNP rs4977574 on chromosome 9p21.3 was associated with overall IS [odds ratio (OR) = 1.12; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-1.20; P = 0.002] as well as LVD (OR = 1.36; 95% CI: 1.13-1.64; P = 0.001). No other SNP was significantly associated with IS or any of its main subtypes. Analogously, the GRSs did not show any noticeable effect. Conclusions: Besides the previously reported association with SNPs on chromosome 9p21, this study did not detect any significant association between IS and CAD-susceptible genetic variants. Also, GRSs compiled from these variants did not predict IS or any pathogenetic IS subtype, despite a total sample size of 6445 participants.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 76:195127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Theelectronic structure of nanolaminate Ti2AlN and TiN thin films hasbeen investigated by bulk-sensitive soft x-ray emission spectroscopy. The measuredTi L2,3, N K, Al L1, and Al L2,3 emissionspectra are compared with calculated spectra using ab initio density-functionaltheory including dipole transition-matrix elements. Three different types of bondregions are identified; a relatively weak Ti  3d-Al  3p bonding between −1and −2  eV below the Fermi level, and Ti  3d-N  2p and Ti  3d-N  2sbondings which are deeper in energy observed at −4.8  eV and−15  eV below the Fermi level, respectively. A strongly modified spectralshape of 3s states of Al L2,3 emission from Ti2AlNin comparison with pure Al metal is found, which reflectsthe Ti  3d-Al  3p hybridization observed in the Al L1 emission. Thedifferences between the electronic and crystal structures of Ti2AlN andTiN are discussed in relation to the intercalated Al layersof the former compound and the change of the materialsproperties in comparison with the isostructural carbides.

  • Elasticity model for the evaluation of structural parameters in multilayer systems with applications to transition metal and Si-based multilayers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 84:12, s. 125424-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present and evaluate a model based on elasticity theory for the calculation of in- and out-of-plane lattice parameters in multilayer systems, which can be used for a wide selection of multilayers. The model assumes perfect lattice matching at the interface between the different components in the multilayer. The only input is the knowledge of the elastic and lattice constants of the different components in the bulk as well as the relative thickness between the components in the multilayer. We show that the model is in good agreement when compared to first-principles theory calculations and also that there is good agreement between the model and experimental structures for several multilayer systems. The model is also shown to be more appropriate in describing thicker multilayers with larger periodicities such that the lattice constants in the system are independent on the periodicity. Furthermore, we provide results for the lattice parameters for a large body of multilayers based on transition metals and semiconducting materials.
