  • Measuring progress from 1990 to 2017 and projecting attainment to 2030 of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals for 195 countries and territories: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Lancet. - : Elsevier. - 1474-547X .- 0140-6736. ; 392:10159, s. 2091-2138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of “leaving no one behind”, it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017), we measured progress on 41 of 52 health-related SDG indicators and estimated the health-related SDG index for 195 countries and territories for the period 1990–2017, projected indicators to 2030, and analysed global attainment. Methods: We measured progress on 41 health-related SDG indicators from 1990 to 2017, an increase of four indicators since GBD 2016 (new indicators were health worker density, sexual violence by non-intimate partners, population census status, and prevalence of physical and sexual violence [reported separately]). We also improved the measurement of several previously reported indicators. We constructed national-level estimates and, for a subset of health-related SDGs, examined indicator-level differences by sex and Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintile. We also did subnational assessments of performance for selected countries. To construct the health-related SDG index, we transformed the value for each indicator on a scale of 0–100, with 0 as the 2·5th percentile and 100 as the 97·5th percentile of 1000 draws calculated from 1990 to 2030, and took the geometric mean of the scaled indicators by target. To generate projections through 2030, we used a forecasting framework that drew estimates from the broader GBD study and used weighted averages of indicator-specific and country-specific annualised rates of change from 1990 to 2017 to inform future estimates. We assessed attainment of indicators with defined targets in two ways: first, using mean values projected for 2030, and then using the probability of attainment in 2030 calculated from 1000 draws. We also did a global attainment analysis of the feasibility of attaining SDG targets on the basis of past trends. Using 2015 global averages of indicators with defined SDG targets, we calculated the global annualised rates of change required from 2015 to 2030 to meet these targets, and then identified in what percentiles the required global annualised rates of change fell in the distribution of country-level rates of change from 1990 to 2015. We took the mean of these global percentile values across indicators and applied the past rate of change at this mean global percentile to all health-related SDG indicators, irrespective of target definition, to estimate the equivalent 2030 global average value and percentage change from 2015 to 2030 for each indicator. Findings: The global median health-related SDG index in 2017 was 59·4 (IQR 35·4–67·3), ranging from a low of 11·6 (95% uncertainty interval 9·6–14·0) to a high of 84·9 (83·1–86·7). SDG index values in countries assessed at the subnational level varied substantially, particularly in China and India, although scores in Japan and the UK were more homogeneous. Indicators also varied by SDI quintile and sex, with males having worse outcomes than females for non-communicable disease (NCD) mortality, alcohol use, and smoking, among others. Most countries were projected to have a higher health-related SDG index in 2030 than in 2017, while country-level probabilities of attainment by 2030 varied widely by indicator. Under-5 mortality, neonatal mortality, maternal mortality ratio, and malaria indicators had the most countries with at least 95% probability of target attainment. Other indicators, including NCD mortality and suicide mortality, had no countries projected to meet corresponding SDG targets on the basis of projected mean values for 2030 but showed some probability of attainment by 2030. For some indicators, including child malnutrition, several infectious diseases, and most violence measures, the annualised rates of change required to meet SDG targets far exceeded the pace of progress achieved by any country in the recent past. We found that applying the mean global annualised rate of change to indicators without defined targets would equate to about 19% and 22% reductions in global smoking and alcohol consumption, respectively; a 47% decline in adolescent birth rates; and a more than 85% increase in health worker density per 1000 population by 2030. Interpretation: The GBD study offers a unique, robust platform for monitoring the health-related SDGs across demographic and geographic dimensions. Our findings underscore the importance of increased collection and analysis of disaggregated data and highlight where more deliberate design or targeting of interventions could accelerate progress in attaining the SDGs. Current projections show that many health-related SDG indicators, NCDs, NCD-related risks, and violence-related indicators will require a concerted shift away from what might have driven past gains—curative interventions in the case of NCDs—towards multisectoral, prevention-oriented policy action and investments to achieve SDG aims. Notably, several targets, if they are to be met by 2030, demand a pace of progress that no country has achieved in the recent past. The future is fundamentally uncertain, and no model can fully predict what breakthroughs or events might alter the course of the SDGs. What is clear is that our actions—or inaction—today will ultimately dictate how close the world, collectively, can get to leaving no one behind by 2030.

  • Multi-ancestry genetic study of type 2 diabetes highlights the power of diverse populations for discovery and translation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Nature. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 54:5, s. 560-572
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We assembled an ancestrally diverse collection of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in 180,834 affected individuals and 1,159,055 controls (48.9% non-European descent) through the Diabetes Meta-Analysis of Trans-Ethnic association studies (DIAMANTE) Consortium. Multi-ancestry GWAS meta-analysis identified 237 loci attaining stringent genome-wide significance (P < 5 x 10(-9)), which were delineated to 338 distinct association signals. Fine-mapping of these signals was enhanced by the increased sample size and expanded population diversity of the multi-ancestry meta-analysis, which localized 54.4% of T2D associations to a single variant with >50% posterior probability. This improved fine-mapping enabled systematic assessment of candidate causal genes and molecular mechanisms through which T2D associations are mediated, laying the foundations for functional investigations. Multi-ancestry genetic risk scores enhanced transferability of T2D prediction across diverse populations. Our study provides a step toward more effective clinical translation of T2D GWAS to improve global health for all, irrespective of genetic background. Genome-wide association and fine-mapping analyses in ancestrally diverse populations implicate candidate causal genes and mechanisms underlying type 2 diabetes. Trans-ancestry genetic risk scores enhance transferability across populations.

  • Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks for 195 countries and territories, 1990-2017: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 comparative risk assessment (CRA) is a comprehensive approach to risk factor quantification that offers a useful tool for synthesising evidence on risks and risk-outcome associations. With each annual GBD study, we update the GBD CRA to incorporate improved methods, new risks and risk-outcome pairs, and new data on risk exposure levels and risk- outcome associations. Methods We used the CRA framework developed for previous iterations of GBD to estimate levels and trends in exposure, attributable deaths, and attributable disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), by age group, sex, year, and location for 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or groups of risks from 1990 to 2017. This study included 476 risk-outcome pairs that met the GBD study criteria for convincing or probable evidence of causation. We extracted relative risk and exposure estimates from 46 749 randomised controlled trials, cohort studies, household surveys, census data, satellite data, and other sources. We used statistical models to pool data, adjust for bias, and incorporate covariates. Using the counterfactual scenario of theoretical minimum risk exposure level (TMREL), we estimated the portion of deaths and DALYs that could be attributed to a given risk. We explored the relationship between development and risk exposure by modelling the relationship between the Socio-demographic Index (SDI) and risk-weighted exposure prevalence and estimated expected levels of exposure and risk-attributable burden by SDI. Finally, we explored temporal changes in risk-attributable DALYs by decomposing those changes into six main component drivers of change as follows: (1) population growth; (2) changes in population age structures; (3) changes in exposure to environmental and occupational risks; (4) changes in exposure to behavioural risks; (5) changes in exposure to metabolic risks; and (6) changes due to all other factors, approximated as the risk-deleted death and DALY rates, where the risk-deleted rate is the rate that would be observed had we reduced the exposure levels to the TMREL for all risk factors included in GBD 2017.

  • Refining the accuracy of validated target identification through coding variant fine-mapping in type 2 diabetes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 50:4, s. 559-571
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We aggregated coding variant data for 81,412 type 2 diabetes cases and 370,832 controls of diverse ancestry, identifying 40 coding variant association signals (P < 2.2 × 10−7); of these, 16 map outside known risk-associated loci. We make two important observations. First, only five of these signals are driven by low-frequency variants: even for these, effect sizes are modest (odds ratio ≤1.29). Second, when we used large-scale genome-wide association data to fine-map the associated variants in their regional context, accounting for the global enrichment of complex trait associations in coding sequence, compelling evidence for coding variant causality was obtained for only 16 signals. At 13 others, the associated coding variants clearly represent ‘false leads’ with potential to generate erroneous mechanistic inference. Coding variant associations offer a direct route to biological insight for complex diseases and identification of validated therapeutic targets; however, appropriate mechanistic inference requires careful specification of their causal contribution to disease predisposition.

  • A ring-like accretion structure in M87 connecting its black hole and jet
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 616:7958, s. 686-690
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation1,2. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of [Formula: see text] Schwarzschild radii in diameter, approximately 50% larger than that seen at 1.3 mm. The outer edge at 3.5 mm is also larger than that at 1.3 mm. This larger and thicker ring indicates a substantial contribution from the accretion flow with absorption effects, in addition to the gravitationally lensed ring-like emission. The images show that the edge-brightened jet connects to the accretion flow of the black hole. Close to the black hole, the emission profile of the jet-launching region is wider than the expected profile of a black-hole-driven jet, suggesting the possible presence of a wind associated with the accretion flow.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 77:15, s. 2325-

    •  A systematic investigation of the effect of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on optical properties of undoped GaNAs/GaAs structures is reported. Two effects are suggested to account for the observed dramatic improvement in the quality of the GaNxAs1-x/GaAs quantum structures after RTA: (i) improved composition uniformity of the GaNxAs1-x alloy, deduced from the photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation and time-resolved measurements; and (ii) significant reduction in the concentration of competing nonradiative defects, revealed by the optically detected magnetic resonance studies.

    •  We review our recent results from studies of electronic properties of GaNAs/GaAs structures with low nitrogen content, by photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation, time-resolved PL spectroscopies as well as optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) and cyclotron resonance (ODCR) studies. The issues to be addressed include key material-related properties and fundamental electronic parameters of the GaNAs alloy, relevant to device applications, such as identification of the dominant recombination processes in the alloy, compositional dependence of the electron effective mass and band alignment in the GaNAs/GaAs heterostructures.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  The optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) technique has been employed to examine the nature and formation mechanism of non-radiative defects in GaNAs and InGaAsN. In both alloys, two defects were observed and were shown to be deep-level, non-radiative recombination centers. One of the defects has been identified as a complex involving an AsGa antisite. These two defects gain more importance with increasing N composition up to 3%, presumably due to an increase in their concentration. With a further higher N composition, the defects start to lose importance in carrier recombination that is attributed to an increasingly important role of other new non-radiative channels introduced with a high N composition. On the other hand, effect of In composition up to 3% seems to be only marginal. Both defects were shown to be preferably introduced in the alloys during low-temperature growth by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), but can be rather efficiently removed by post-growth rapid thermal annealing.

  • Deep H i Mapping of Stephan's Quintet and Its Neighborhood
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - 0004-637X. ; 954:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We carried out deep mapping observations of the atomic hydrogen (H i) 21 cm line emission in a field centered on the famous galaxy group Stephan's Quintet (SQ), using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) equipped with a 19-beam receiver. The final data cube reaches an H i column density sensitivity of 5σ = 2.1 × 1017 cm-2 per 20 km s-1 channel with an angular resolution of 4.′0. The discovery of a large diffuse feature of the H i emission in the outskirts of the intragroup medium of SQ was reported in a previous paper (Xu et al.). Here we present a new study of the total H i emission of SQ and the detection of several neighboring galaxies, exploiting the high sensitivity and the large sky coverage of the FAST observations. A total H i mass of M H I = 3.48 ± 0.35 × 1010 M ☉ is found for SQ, which is significantly higher than previous measurements in the literature. This indicates that, contrary to earlier claims, SQ is not H i deficient. The excessive H i gas is mainly found in the velocity ranges of 6200-6400 km s-1 and 6800-7000 km s-1, which were undetected in previous observations that are less sensitive than ours. Our results suggest that the "missing H i"in compact groups may be hidden in the low-density diffuse neutral gas instead of in the ionized gas.

  • Trans-ethnic kidney function association study reveals putative causal genes and effects on kidney-specific disease aetiologies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects ~10% of the global population, with considerable ethnic differences in prevalence and aetiology. We assemble genome-wide association studies of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), a measure of kidney function that defines CKD, in 312,468 individuals of diverse ancestry. We identify 127 distinct association signals with homogeneous effects on eGFR across ancestries and enrichment in genomic annotations including kidney-specific histone modifications. Fine-mapping reveals 40 high-confidence variants driving eGFR associations and highlights putative causal genes with cell-type specific expression in glomerulus, and in proximal and distal nephron. Mendelian randomisation supports causal effects of eGFR on overall and cause-specific CKD, kidney stone formation, diastolic blood pressure and hypertension. These results define novel molecular mechanisms and putative causal genes for eGFR, offering insight into clinical outcomes and routes to CKD treatment development.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: APS 2001 March Meeting,2001. - Bull. Amer. Phys. Soc. : APS. ; , s. 1185-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Properties of a grown-in intrinsic defect in GaNAs alloys and GaNAs/GaAs quantum well structures with low N composition have been investigated by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). The characteristic hyperfine (HF) structure, arising from S=1/2 and I=3/2, suggests a complex involving the As_Ga antisite as being the most likely candidate for the responsible defect. The strong HF interaction evidences a high localization of the wavefunction of the unpaired electron near the As_Ga antisite, which is found to be rather insensitive to either N composition or quantum confinement. The formation mechanism for the defect has been studied by varying growth temperature or by performing post-growth rapid thermal annealing. It is shown that the defect can be preferably introduced during molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth at low temperature under non-equilibrium conditions, similar to the case of its parental compound GaAs grown under similar conditions.

    • The first experimental signature of an intrinsic defect in GaNAs is provided from an optically detected magnetic resonance study. The resolved central hyperfine structure identifies the defect with a nuclear spin I = 3/2, containing either an AsGa antisite or a Ga interstitial. From the strength of the hyperfine interaction and the growth conditions, a complex involving the AsGa antisite seems to be a more likely candidate.

  • Ingår i: European journal of clinical pharmacology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-1041 .- 0031-6970. ; 65:4, s. 355-63

    • AIM: The aim of this study was to obtain pharmacogenetic data in a Vietnamese population on genes coding for proteins involved in the elimination of drugs currently used for the treatment of malaria and human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. METHOD: The main polymorphisms on the cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes, CYP2A6, CYP2B6, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP3A4 and CYP3A5, and the multi-drug resistance 1 gene (MDR1) were genotyped in 78 healthy Vietnamese subjects. Pharmacokinetic metrics were available for CYP2A6 (coumarin), CYP2C19 (mephenytoin), CYP2D6 (metoprolol) and CYP3As (midazolam), allowing correlations with the determined genotype. RESULTS: In the CYP2 family, we detected alleles CYP2A6*4 (12%) and *5 (15%); CYP2B6*4 (8%), *6 (27%); CYP2C19*2 (31%) and *3 (6%); CYP2D6*4, *5, *10 (1, 8 and 44%, respectively). In the CYP3A family, CYP3A4*1B was detected at a low frequency (2%), whereas CYP3A5 *3 was detected at a frequency of 67%. The MDR1 3435T allele was present with a prevalence of 40%. Allele proportions in our cohort were compared with those reported for other Asian populations. CYP2C19 genotypes were associated to the S-4'-OH-mephenytoin/S-mephenytoin ratio quantified in plasma 4 h after intake of 100 mg mephenytoin. While CYP2D6 genotypes were partially reflected by the alpha-OH-metroprolol/metoprolol ratio in plasma 4 h after dosing, no correlation existed between midazolam plasma concentrations 4 h post-dose and CYP3A genotypes. CONCLUSIONS: The Vietnamese subjects of our study cohort presented allele prevalences in drug-metabolising enzymes that were generally comparable with those reported in other Asian populations. Deviations were found for CYP2A6*4 compared to a Chinese population (12 vs. 5%, respectively; P = 0.023), CYP2A6*5 compared with a Korean population (15 vs. <1%, respectively; P < 0.0001), a Malaysian population (1%; P < 0.0001) and a Chinese population (1%; P < 0.0001); CYP2B6*6 compared with a Korean population (27 vs. 12%; P = 0.002) and a Japanese population (16%; P = 0.021). Pharmacokinetic metrics versus genotype analysis reinforces the view that the predictive value of certain globally common variants (e.g. CYP2D6 single nucleotide polymorphisms) should be evaluated in a population-specific manner.

The dominant PL mechanism has been determined as recombination of excitons trapped by potential fluctuations of the band edge, due to composition disorder and strain nonuniformity of the alloy. •  The band alignment in the GaN_xAs_1-x/GaAs quantum well (QW) structures with low N composition is studied by employing time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, PL polarization measurements and optically-detected cyclotron resonance (ODCR) studies. The type I band line-up is concluded based on the following experimental results. Firstly, radiative lifetime of the near band gap PL emission in the GaNAs/GaAs MQW structures is nearly identical to that for the spatially direct PL transitions in the GaNAs epilayers. Secondly, the observed polarization of the PL emission in GaNAs QWs (preferentially along the growth direction) is more consistent with the type I band line-up in the GaNAs/GaAs QWs. Thirdly, since the ODCR peaks arising from the free electrons and free holes in GaAs disappear under resonant excitation of the GaNAs MQWs, the photo-excited holes are spatially confined within the GaNAs layers under the resonant excitation condition.

    • Three independent experimental techniques, namely, time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, PL polarization, and optically detected cyclotron resonance, are employed to determine the band alignment of GaNxAS1-x/GaAs quantum structures with a low-N composition. It is concluded that band lineup is type I based on the following experimental results: (i) comparable radiative decay time of the GaNAs-related emission measured from single GaNAs epilayers and from GaNAs/GaAs quantum well (QW) structures, (ii) polarization of the GaNAs-related emission, and (iii) spatial confinement of the photoexcited holes within the GaNAs layers under resonant excitation of the GaNAs QW's.

  • Optical Detection of Cyclotron Resonance (ODCR) in GaNAs/GaAs Quantum Well Structures

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ODCR has been employed to study effective masses and carrier recombination in GaNAs/GaAs multi-quantum well (MQW) structures, prepared by MBE with the nitrogen composition up to 4.5 above GaAs bandgap excitation consists of the excitonic recombination within the GaNAs MQW, the band edge PL emissions from GaAs and a broad 0.8-eV PL of unknown origin. When monitoring these emissions under the above GaAs excitation, the ODCR spectrum is dominated by the electron and hole CR in GaAs, with effective mass values 0.07m0 and 0.5m_0, respectively. The ODCR mechanism is discussed in terms of hot carrier effects, resulting in a reduced carrier recombination in GaAs and an enhanced carrier trapping in the GaNAs MQW. Under resonant excitation of the GaNAs MQW only a broad ODCR signal can be observed corresponding to an effective mass value 0.1m_0, attributed to the electron CR in the GaNAs MQW, where a higher electron effective mass value and a much lower mobility are expected.

    • Electron effective mass (m*e) in GaNxAs1-x/GaAs quantum wells (QWs) is investigated by the optically detected cyclotron resonance technique. The m*e values of 0.12m0 and 0.19m0 are directly determined for the 70-A-thick QWs with N composition of 1.2% and 2.0%, respectively. This sizable increase in the electron effective mass is consistent with the earlier theoretical predictions based on the strong interaction of the lowest conduction band states with the upper lying band states or impurity band induced by the incorporation of N. ⌐ 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    • Effective masses and carrier recombination in GaNAs/GaAs quantum wells (QWs) with nitrogen composition up to 4.5%, have been studied by optical detection of cyclotron resonance (ODCR). When monitoring the PL emissions under the conditions of above-GaAs barrier excitation, the ODCR spectrum is dominated by the electron CR in GaAs with an effective mass value 0.066m0. The ODCR mechanism is discussed in terms of hot carrier effects, resulting in a reduced carrier recombination in GaAs and an enhanced carrier trapping in the GaNAs QW. Under resonant excitation of the GaNAs QWs, only a broad ODCR signal can be observed, corresponding to an effective mass value of 0.12m0 and 0.19m0 when the N composition is about 1.2 and 2%, respectively. This is attributed to the electron CR in the GaNAs QW with a lower electron mobility. This sizeable increase in the electron effective mass is in agreement with earlier theoretical predictions. ⌐ 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  Defects in p-type 4H and 6H SiC irradiated by 2.5 MeV electrons were studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Two anisotropic EPR spectra, labeled I and II, were observed in both 4H and 6H SiC. These spectra demonstrating triclinic symmetry of the center can be described by an effective electron spin S=1/2. The angle α between the direction of the principal gz of the g-tensors and the c-axis is determined as 63° and 50° for spectra I and II, respectively. In the 6H polytype, a third also similar EPR spectrum was detected. Based on their similarity in the electronic structure (electron spin, symmetry, g values), annealing behavior and temperature dependence, these spectra are suggested to be related to the same defect occupying different inequivalent lattice sites in 4H and 6H SiC. A pair between a silicon vacancy and an interstitial is a possible model for the defect.

    • We review recent progress in our understanding of intrinsic defects in GaN and SiC, gained from magneto-optical studies by Zeeman measurements and optically detected magnetic resonance. The two best-known intrinsic defects in these two wide bandgap semiconductors, i.e. the Ga interstitial in GaN and the silicon vacancy in SiC, are discussed in detail. The Ga interstitial is the first and only intrinsic defect in GaN that has so far been unambiguously identified, either in the presumably isolated form or in a family of up to three complexes. The silicon vacancy is among the most studied intrinsic defect in SiC, at least in two charge states, and yet still remains controversial.

    • The Earth close approach of near-Earth asteroid 2005 LW3 on 2022 November 23 represented a good opportunity for a second observing campaign to test the timing accuracy of astrometric observation. With 82 participating stations, the International Asteroid Warning Network collected 1046 observations of 2005 LW3 around the time of the close approach. Compared to the previous timing campaign targeting 2019 XS, some individual observers were able to significantly improve the accuracy of their reported observation times. In particular, U.S. surveys achieved good timing performance. However, no broad, systematic improvement was achieved compared to the previous campaign, with an overall negative bias persisting among the different observers. The calibration of observing times and the mitigation of timing errors should be important future considerations for observers and orbit computers, respectively.

    • A detailed study of as-grown Zn-doped GaN employing optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy is presented. Besides the well-known ODMR spectra of an effective-mass-like donor and Zn acceptor, a positive ODMR signal of an S=1 / 2 paramagnetic center was observed when monitoring the dominating blue luminescence band peaking at 2.8 eV. The involvement of a single Ga nucleus in the defect center is revealed from the rather well-resolved hyperfine interactions involving the isotopes 71Ga (39.9%) and 69Ga (60.1%), both with nuclear spin I=3 / 2. The C3v symmetry, the hyperfine interaction and the defect formation suggest a Ga-related complex nature of this center.

    • Recent developments in material properties of GaN and related heterostructure combinations are reviewed, with emphasis on optical data. We discuss recent polarized photoluminescence (PL) data on the free excitons in GaN, obtained from thick HVPE grown layers. The exchange splitting constant is found to be about 0.6 meV, a more accurate value than previous suggestions. The PL signatures of shallow donors and acceptors, i.e. the bound excitons, are discussed and tentatively identified. Intrinsic point defects are discussed in terms of stability and experimental signatures. Quantum well structures in the InGaN/GaN and GaN/AlGaN systems are briefly discussed, with emphasis on localization of carriers and excitons. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

    • Optically detected cyclotron resonance (ODCR) at X-band frequency (~9.23 GHz) was used to study hole effective masses in 4H SiC. In addition to the known ODCR signal related to the cyclotron resonance (CR) of electrons we have observed an ODCR peak at a higher magnetic field, which is attributed to the CR of holes. In the vicinity of the maximum of the uppermost valence band, the constant energy surface can be considered as an ellipsoid with the principal axis along the c axis and the effective masses of the holes were determined as mh? = (0.66▒0.02)m0 and mh?=(1.75▒0.02)m0. The influence of the polaron coupling effect on the effective mass values in 4H SiC is discussed. ⌐ 2000 The American Physical Society.

    •  Optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) was used for study of defects in n-type 6H-SiC. Four ODMR spectra related to spin S = 1 centres were observed. Two of these centres, labelled a and b, have a trigonal symmetry with the symmetry axis along the c-axis of the hexagonal crystal. For the other two centres, labelled c and d, the symmetry is lower (C1h) and the principal axis z of the g- and D-tensor is about 71 degrees off the c-axis. Based on the symmetry axes, the annealing behaviour and the intensity, these spectra are suggested to originate from different configurations of the paired centre between a silicon vacancy and a nearest-neighbour point defect (either a carbon vacancy or a silicon antisite), occupying different inequivalent sites in the 6H-SiC. These defects are non-radiative and act as efficient recombination channels in the material.

    • Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to study defects in p-type 4H and 6H SiC irradiated with 2.5 MeV electrons at elevated temperatures (400 °C). After irradiation, an anisotropic EPR spectrum, labeled EI4, having monoclinic symmetry (C1h) and an effective spin S = 1 was observed in both 4H and 6H SiC. The same g-tensor with the principal values, gx = 2.0051, gy = 2.0038 and gz = 2.0029 was determined for the spectra in both polytypes. Here the z- and x-axis lie in the (1 1 2̄ 0) plane and the y-axis perpendicular to this plane. The angle between the principal z-axis and the c-axis is 54°. The fine structure parameters were determined as D = 3.28×10-2 cm-1 and 3.44×10-2 cm-1 for 6H and 4H SiC, respectively; E = 0.67×10-2 cm-1 for both polytypes. From the obtained 29Si hyperfine structure and spin Hamiltionian parameters, the defect can be identified as the pair of two carbon vacancies in the (1 1 2̄ 0) or equivalent planes.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Radiocarbon. - 0033-8222. ; 62:4, s. 725-757
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radiocarbon (C) ages cannot provide absolutely dated chronologies for archaeological or paleoenvironmental studies directly but must be converted to calendar age equivalents using a calibration curve compensating for fluctuations in atmospheric C concentration. Although calibration curves are constructed from independently dated archives, they invariably require revision as new data become available and our understanding of the Earth system improves. In this volume the international C calibration curves for both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, as well as for the ocean surface layer, have been updated to include a wealth of new data and extended to 55,000 cal BP. Based on tree rings, IntCal20 now extends as a fully atmospheric record to ca. 13,900 cal BP. For the older part of the timescale, IntCal20 comprises statistically integrated evidence from floating tree-ring chronologies, lacustrine and marine sediments, speleothems, and corals. We utilized improved evaluation of the timescales and location variable C offsets from the atmosphere (reservoir age, dead carbon fraction) for each dataset. New statistical methods have refined the structure of the calibration curves while maintaining a robust treatment of uncertainties in the C ages, the calendar ages and other corrections. The inclusion of modeled marine reservoir ages derived from a three-dimensional ocean circulation model has allowed us to apply more appropriate reservoir corrections to the marine C data rather than the previous use of constant regional offsets from the atmosphere. Here we provide an overview of the new and revised datasets and the associated methods used for the construction of the IntCal20 curve and explore potential regional offsets for tree-ring data. We discuss the main differences with respect to the previous calibration curve, IntCal13, and some of the implications for archaeology and geosciences ranging from the recent past to the time of the extinction of the Neanderthals.

    • Polymer-like and diamond-like hydrogenated amorphous carbon films, characterized by high spin concentrations of 1020 cm-3, have been studied by multiple frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy at 9, 35, and 94 GHz. Whereas the low-frequency measurements show only one single symmetric EPR line, the high-frequency measurements reveal the anisotropic nature of the g tensor. They show the presence of two different paramagnetic centers with anisotropic g tensors of g?(1) = 2.005, g?(1) ˜ 2.003, and g?(2) = 2.010, g?(2) ˜ 2.003. We attribute both to localized p states on nanosized sp2 graphitic clusters. The g? values of the g tensors, which are correlated to the size of the graphite like carbon clusters, indicate two different cluster sizes with values below 50 Å. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
