  • A human protein atlas for normal and cancer tissues based on antibody proteomics
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Molecular & Cellular Proteomics. - 1535-9476 .- 1535-9484. ; 4:12, s. 1920-1932
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Antibody-based proteomics provides a powerful approach for the functional study of the human proteome involving the systematic generation of protein-specific affinity reagents. We used this strategy to construct a comprehensive, antibody-based protein atlas for expression and localization profiles in 48 normal human tissues and 20 different cancers. Here we report a new publicly available database containing, in the first version, similar to 400,000 high resolution images corresponding to more than 700 antibodies toward human proteins. Each image has been annotated by a certified pathologist to provide a knowledge base for functional studies and to allow queries about protein profiles in normal and disease tissues. Our results suggest it should be possible to extend this analysis to the majority of all human proteins thus providing a valuable tool for medical and biological research.

  • Corona-pandemins påverkan på lågstadieelevers läsinlärning
  • 2021

  • Digital transformation and power relations. Interpretative repertoires of digitalization in the Swedish steel industry
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 38:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on how ideas of ‘digitalization’ are discursively constructed in the Swedish steel industry. Using a discursive psychology approach, we identify seven interpretative repertoires in the discursive practicing of digitalization: everyone-else, speed, competition, job loss, control, safety, and equality. Examining their functions and effects, we show that not only is digital transformation constructed as more productive, efficient, competitive, technologically advanced, safe, and equal, it also involves a shift towards the blue-collar worker being more vulnerable; a construction where she is able-minded but lonely, physically fragile, obtuse and unreliable, and a victim of a development beyond her control, forcing of her to acquire new competence. We conclude that this reproduces asymmetrical power relations between workers and companies, pushing the challenges of digital transformation to the workers. At the same time, we also see how these local discourses hold a possibility of tempering this asymmetry through the construct of togetherness of different contexts, bodies, and hierarchal levels, thus connecting steel industry workers of the future through the use of digital technology.

  • Effects of frequency and morphosyntactic structure on error detection, correction, and repetition in Swedish-speaking children
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Applied Psycholinguistics. - : CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS. - 0142-7164 .- 1469-1817. ; 39:6, s. 1189-1220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Grammatical error detection and correction are often used to test explicit language knowledge. This study investigated effects of token frequency and error type in error detection, correction, and repetition, and performance on the three tasks were compared and related to models of metalinguistic awareness and development. Thirty Swedish-speaking 10-year-olds with typical language development participated in the study, which focused on four morphosyntactic errors: the infinitive instead of past tense for regular and irregular verbs, and the omission of the obligatory indefinite article in common and neuter gender noun phrases. Target verbs and nouns were of high or low frequency. Results showed significant effects of verb frequency in all tasks, and effects of noun gender for error detection, but not for correction and repetition. Children detected significantly more past-tense errors than they accurately corrected, but the opposite result was seen for noun phrase errors. The patterns of results both within and across tasks imply that implicit language knowledge affects performance, and that lexical frequency, even of familiar words, needs to be controlled when designing tasks for measuring grammatical knowledge. The particular challenge of the Swedish neuter noun phrase in language development and language processing needs to be further investigated.

  • Error Type and Lexical Frequency Effects: Error Detection in Swedish Children With Language Impairment
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research. - : AMER SPEECH-LANGUAGE-HEARING ASSOC. - 1092-4388 .- 1558-9102. ; 60:10, s. 2924-2934
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The first aim of this study was to investigate if Swedish-speaking school-age children with language impairment (LI) show specific morphosyntactic vulnerabilities in error detection. The second aim was to investigate the effects of lexical frequency on error detection, an overlooked aspect of previous error detection studies. Method: Error sensitivity for grammatical structures vulnerable in Swedish-speaking preschool children with LI (omission of the indefinite article in a noun phrase with a neuter/common noun, and use of the infinitive instead of past-tense regular and irregular verbs) was compared to a control error (singular noun instead of plural). Target structures involved a high-frequency (HF) or a low-frequency (LF) noun/verb. Grammatical and ungrammatical sentences were presented in headphones, and responses were collected through button presses. Results: Children with LI had similar sensitivity to the plural control error as peers with typical language development, but lower sensitivity to past-tense errors and noun phrase errors. All children showed lexical frequency effects for errors involving verbs (HF > LF), and noun gender effects for noun phrase errors (common > neuter). Conclusions: School-age children with LI may have subtle difficulties with morphosyntactic processing that mirror expressive difficulties in preschool children with LI. Lexical frequency may affect morphosyntactic processing, which has clinical implications for assessment of grammatical knowledge.

  • Factors affecting speech-language pathologists’ language assessment procedures and tools–challenges and future directions in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Logopedics, Phoniatrics, Vocology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1401-5439 .- 1651-2022.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: National surveys of speech-language pathologists’ (SLP) practices play an important role in professional development, and previous research show that many challenges faced by the profession are similar across the globe. This study aims to describe Swedish SLP assessment practices, examine factors that may affect this practice, and discuss the results in the light of international studies. Methods: Data from 584 SLPs were collected through an online questionnaire with multiple choice and open-ended questions. A mixed-method design was deployed where a deductive qualitative analysis of free-text responses complemented quantitative data. Results: In line with previous results from English-speaking countries, both standardized discrete skill tests and contextualized assessments were used by the respondents but fewer used language sample analysis and dynamic assessment procedures, despite international recommendations. There were few differences based on experience, work setting, proportion of multilingual assessments and socio-economic status of the health catchment area. Main challenges reported were lack of time and difficulty prioritizing, and assessment and/or diagnosis of multilingual/L2 children, which is similar to challenges faced by SLPs in other countries. Swedish SLPs also reported lack of national clinical guidelines as a main challenge. Factors contributing to better assessments included experience, and the combination of many sources of information, including professional and interprofessional discussions. Conclusions: The accumulated evidence from this and previous studies show that to address challenges and build on strengths, changes on a systemic level are needed. This includes more time and resources for continuing education and implementation of recommended assessment methods, as well as professional and interprofessional collaborations.

  • No learning loss in Sweden during the pandemic : Evidence from primary school reading assessments
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Educational Research. - : Elsevier. - 0883-0355 .- 1873-538X. ; 114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has led to worldwide school closures, with a risk of learning loss. Sweden kept primary schools open, but it is unknown whether student and teacher absence and pandemic-related stress factors affected teaching and student progress negatively. In this study, reading assessment data from 97,073 Swedish primary school students (grades 1-3) were analysed to investigate potential learning loss. Results showed that word decoding and reading comprehension scores were not lower during the pandemic compared to before the pandemic, that students from low socio-economic backgrounds were not especially affected, and that the proportion of students with weak decoding skills did not increase during the pandemic. Study limitations are discussed. We conclude that open schools benefitted Swedish primary school students.

  • The Use of Causal Language and Filled Pauses in Children with and without Autism
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Child Development Research. - : Hindawi Publishing Corporation. - 2090-3987 .- 2090-3995. ; 2016, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated the relationship between pragmatic ability and two aspects of structural language in conversational language samples from 24 school-age children with and without high-functioning autism (HFA): causal statements and speech disruptions. In contrast to a majority of previous studies, grammatical complexity and mean length of utterance were factored into the analyses, since these are potential confounding variables. The results showed that children with HFA used fewer spontaneous causal statements and fewer filled pauses in conversation compared to children with typical development (TD). There was also a significant and positive relationship between filled pauses and pragmatic ability after controlling for structural language ability. The results may help us understand the conversational patterns of children with HFA better.

  • Narrative retells in Swedish school-aged children – a clinical pilot study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Logopedics, Phoniatrics, Vocology. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1401-5439 .- 1651-2022. ; 48:1, s. 12-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AimThe aim of this pilot study was to evaluate two new retelling tasks intended for clinical use in terms of language sample size, effects of picture support, and order of presentation.MethodsForty Swedish-speaking children in grades 4–6 participated in the study, 31 children with typical language development (TLD, mean age 11;1), and nine children with developmental language disorder (DLD, mean age 11;5). Two oral retells, one with and one without picture support, were analyzed with regards to productivity, syntactic complexity, basic Story Grammar (SG) units, and Internal Responses (IR).ResultsResults showed no systematic order effects in the TLD group, although this needs to be investigated further, and good inter-rater reliability. Both tasks elicited sufficiently large language samples, except from one participant with DLD whose samples were excluded from subsequent comparisons. When appropriate, data were analyzed with ANOVA (productivity, mean length of C-unit/MLCU), otherwise t-tests (TLD-group) or non-parametric tests (DLD-group) were used. As expected, retells from participants with DLD were shorter, with shorter MLCU and fewer SG units compared to the TLD group. There were also task effects: in the task with picture support, all participants had longer MLCU, and participants with TLD also showed a higher proportion of subordinate clauses, indicating that pictures may function as a support for syntactic complexity. The task without picture support, on the other hand, elicited more C-units indicated by a significant main effect, and more SG units, which was a significant effect in the TLD group.ConclusionsWe conclude that both tasks might be useful for Swedish speech-language pathologists.

  • Utredningar stjäl viktig tid från undervisningen
  • 2023
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Skolpolitiker verkar ibland uppfatta lärares tid som obegränsad och att nya pålagor saknar negativa konsekvenser. Vi ger här två exempel på att skollagskrav tvingar att lärare att ägna sig åt utredningsarbete på bekostnad av undervisning och stödinsatser. Vi visar också att nya krav delvis kom till på grund av missuppfattningar om stödinsatser i svensk skola.

  • Morphosyntactic Challenges for Swedish-Speaking Children with Developmental Language Disorder in Comparison with L1 and L2 Peers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Applied Linguistics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0142-6001 .- 1477-450X. ; 42:4, s. 720-739
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides an overview of the research on morpho-syntactic challenges in Swedish-speaking children with developmental language disorder (DLD), compared with typically developing (TD) children learning Swedish as their first and second language (L1/L2). Children with DLD show vulnerabilities with verb finiteness, the possessive construction, and noun phrase gender agreement, as well as word-order in nonsubject initiated sentences. For L2-learners, word order and the noun phrase gender agreement present main challenges. We discuss to what extent these morpho-syntactic weaknesses can be explained by different theoretical accounts and identify future research needs. Surface similarities between groups may originate from different factors and more knowledge is needed to inform educational and clinical practice for both of these groups of children.
