  • Palaeolimnological and sedimentary responses to Holocene forest retreat in the Scandes Mountains, west-central Sweden
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Holocene. - : SAGE Publications. - 0959-6836 .- 1477-0911. ; 14:6, s. 862-876
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A suite of analyses was performed on sediments accumulated during the last 10 700 years in Lake Spaime, a small, hydrologically open water body in the modern alpine tundra zone of the Scandes Mountains, west-central Sweden. The study aimed to evaluate (1) the nature of climate changes that forced the late-Holocene lowering of altitudinal tree limit in the region, the timing of which is known from prior studies based on radiocarbon dating of subfossil wood, and (2) the impact of these vegetational changes on an aquatic ecosystem. Arboreal pollen and plant macrofossil data confirm the persistence of trees in the lake catchment at least from c. 9700 cal. BP until c. 3700 cal. BP. Although growing-season temperature is commonly believed to be the dominant factor driving boreal forest tree-limit variations in the region, a chironomid-based reconstruction of mean July air temperature suggests that local deforestation during the late Holocene was not accompanied by a significant cooling. The tree-limit retreat was more likely caused by increasing effective moisture and declining length of the growing season. The ecohydrological response of Lake Spaime to this combination of climate and vegetational changes included a decline in primary productivity, as indicated by an abrupt decrease in sediment organic matter content, while associated increases in organic delta(13)C, delta(15)N and C/N point to diminished fluxes and altered balance of catchment-derived nutrients following deforestation. The decline in aquatic productivity is also marked by a distinct change in the mineral magnetic properties, from a high magnetic concentration assemblage dominated by fine-grained magnetite of biogenic origin to one dominated by background levels of coarse-grained detrital magnetite.

  • Climate and environment during the Younger Dryas (GS-1) as reflected by composite stable isotope records of lacustrine carbonates at Torreberga, southern Sweden
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quaternary Science. - 1099-1417. ; 14:1, s. 17-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climatic and environmental changes during the Younger Dryas stadial (GS-1) and preceding and following transitions are inferred from stable carbon and oxygen isotope records obtained from the sediments of ancient Lake Torreberga, southern Sweden. Event GS-1 is represented in the sediment sequence by 3.5 m of clay containing lacustrine carbonates of various origins. Comparison of isotopic records obtained on mollusc shells, ostracod valves, and Chara encrustations precipitated during specific seasons of the year supports estimates of relative changes in both lake water and mean annual air temperatures. Variations in soil erosion rates can also be estimated from a simple isotope-mass-balance model to separate allochthonous and autochthonous carbonate contributions to the bulk carbonate content of the sediments. The well-known, rapid climatic shifts characterising the Last Termination in the North Atlantic region are clearly reflected in the isotopic data, as well as longer-term changes within GS-1. Following maximum cooling shortly after the Allerod-Younger Dryas (GI-1-GS-1) transition, a progressive warming and a slight increase in aquatic productivity is indicated. At the Younger Dryas-Preboreal (GS-1-PB) transition mean annual air temperature rapidly increased by more than 5 degrees C and summer lake-water temperature increased by ca. 12 degrees C. The subsequent Preboreal oscillation is characterised by an increase in soil erosion and a slight decrease in mean annual air temperature. These results are in harmony with recent findings about large-scale climate dynamics during the Last Termination. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 59:3, s. 235-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A GaInAsP/InP Fabry-Perot-type buried-heterostructure quantum well laser operating at 1.55 μm has been realized utilizing iron-doped semi-insulating InP around vertical mesas fabricated by reactive ion etching using methane and hydrogen. A maximum cw output power of 19 mW has been achieved on as-cleaved chips of 300 μm length with a quantum efficiency of 21% per facet. Threshold currents lie between 20 and 25 mA. As low as 2 Ω series resistance has been measured despite an ohmic contact area not exceeding that of the 2-μm-wide mesa. A 3 dB bandwidth of 7.5 GHz at 12 mW output power is obtained from the small-signal frequency modulation measurements.

  • Kinematic and kinetic gait analysis in the sagittal plane of trans-femoral amputees before and after special gait re-education.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Prosthetics and Orthotics International. - 1746-1553. ; 26:2, s. 101-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A special gait-training programme, combining a psychological therapeutic approach with methods in physiotherapy and body awareness, was used to re-educate nine unilateral trans-femoral amputees. All were rehabilitated trauma or tumour amputees with an age of 16-60 years. They had worn prostheses for more than 18 months. The re-education aimed at integrating the prosthesis in normal movements and increasing body awareness. Gait was measured before and after treatment and at 6 months follow-up with a three-dimensional motion analysis system. Results showed almost normalised gait speed and increased symmetry in the hip joints with increased muscle work on the amputated side both immediately and at follow-up. At follow-up there were significant differences in almost all parameters between the two legs of the subjects and when compared to a reference group of 18 healthy volunteers of similar age. Thus, the intact leg compensates for loss of function in the amputated leg and thereby works differently compared to the reference group. For example, during shock absorption the extension moment in the intact knee increased from 0.6 Nm/kg before to 1.0 Nm/kg after treatment and at follow-up compared to 0.4 Nm/kg in the reference group. The eccentric power of quadriceps increased from 0.6 w/kg before to 1.8 w/kg after treatment and 1.7 w/kg at follow-up compared to 0.4 w/kg in the reference group. The limp of amputees is usually observed in the frontal plane, but the authors' special focus on the sagittal plane here illustrates gait propulsion influences. The positive training results remained after six months.

  • Pelvic motion in trans-femoral amputees in the frontal and transverse plane before and after special gait re-education.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Prosthetics and Orthotics International. - 1746-1553. ; 27:3, s. 227-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a special gait re-education programme, combining methods in physiotherapy with a psychological therapeutic approach to integrate the prosthesis with normal movements and to increase body awareness, the authors studied unilateral trans-femoral amputees aged 16-60 years with trauma or tumour as causes. In their service area they found 16 such current prosthetic users with at least 2 years of prosthetic experience and 9 who could complete the programme. Gait was measured before and after treatment and at 6 months follow-up with a three-dimensional motion analysis system and was compared to a reference group of 18 healthy volunteers of similar age. Results showed normalised gait speed and increased symmetry in step length after treatment, but reduced symmetry in pelvic motion. The reference group had a pelvic rotation of + 4 degrees both in the frontal and transverse planes. In the frontal plane, pelvic obliquity increased after treatment to a similar amplitude to the reference group, but with a different timing. Pelvic internal rotation on the amputated side increased to about 8 degrees in the beginning of stance. The amputated and the intact side before treatment were more symmetrical than afterwards and also when compared with the reference group. In spite of this, gait appeared to be more symmetrical, probably due to more efficient pelvic motion and more symmetrical upper-body movements. This was probably an effect of increased work with the intact side to compensate for the lack of power on the amputated side. These results remained at follow-up.

  • Holocene forest dynamics and climate changes in the Abisko area, northern Sweden : the Sonesson model of vegetation history reconsidered and confirmed
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Ecological Bulletins. - 0346-6868. ; 1996:1, s. 15-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new palaeoecological and palaeoclimatic project in the subalpine Abisko area, N Scandes, founded upon the pollen zone system defined by Sonesson is described. This model of vegetation history has been confirmed, although the chronology is partly revised. Sonesson's pollen diagrams are combined with new results from a lake sediment sequence at the tree-limit, which include sedimentologic, mineral magnetic, oxygen isotope and plant macrofossil studies. Since the deglaciation at c9000-8500 14C yr BP the vegetation of the Abisko area has generally been dominated by a subalpine birch Betula woodland tundra. The cliamte has generally been subarctic-oceanic since the deglaciation except for the period c.5500-3500 BP when temperate-continental conditions prevailed. This climatic development differs from the situation in the central Scandes.

  • Deglacial vegetation succession and Holocene tree-limit dynamics in the Scandes Mountains, west-central Sweden: stratigraphic data compared to megafossil evidence
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0034-6667. ; 134:3-4, s. 129-151
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-resolution records of plant macrofossils, magnetic susceptibility, and total carbon content, complemented by pollen data, were obtained from a postglacial lake sediment sequence at alpine Lake Stentjarn (987 m a.s.l.), in west-central Sweden. Holocene vegetational and environmental changes were reconstructed from the data, with particular emphasis on the deglacial establishment of terrestrial vegetation and subsequent tree-limit dynamics. A short-lived pioneer flora with Geum rivale, Dryas octopetala, Empetrum nigrum, Ledum palustre, Saxifraga sp., Salix spp., and Oxyria digyna established locally following deglaciation at c. 10,500 cat year BP. The pioneer flora was out-competed by establishing Betula pubescens and grasses at c. 10,300 cat year BP. Subsequent local expansions of B. pubescens at c. 9800 cat year BP and Pinus sylvestris at c. 9200 cal year BP were followed by a temporary retraction of the birch tree-limit and a permanent retreat of pine between 8500 and 8000 cat year BP, accompanied by declining aquatic productivity and increasing catchment erosion. A gradual decrease in forest density initiated at c. 6000 cat year BP led to a retreat of the birch tree-limit from the lake catchment at c. 3500 cat year BP, followed by persistence of scattered trees until c. 2000 cat year BP. A mosaic heath vegetation dominated by Empetrum nigrum and Betula nana developed at c, 3500 cat year BP. Comparison of the stratigraphic data from Lake Stenljiirn with records of radiocarbon-dated subfossil wood remains (megafossils) obtained from adjacent areas during recent decades revealed a high level of consistency of the inferred tree-limit variations for P. sylvestris, B. pubescens, and Alnus incana. Chronological control was established by radiocarbon dating of terrestrial macrofossils and geochemical identification of a tephra horizon originating from the Icelandic Askja- 1875 eruption.

  • Holocene tephra horizons at Klocka Bog, west-central Sweden: aspects of reproducibility in subarctic peat deposits
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quaternary Science. - : Wiley. - 1099-1417 .- 0267-8179. ; 19:3, s. 241-249
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents one of the most extensive Holocene tephra records found to date in Scandinavia. Microtephra horizons originating from Icelandic eruptions were recorded in two ca. 2 m thick peat profiles at Klocka Bog in west-central Sweden. Five of the microtephra horizons were geochemically correlated to the Askja-1875, Hekla-3, Kebister, Hekla-4 and Lairg A tephras respectively. Radiocarbon-based dating of these tephras broadly agree with previously published ages from Iceland, Sweden, Germany and the British Isles. The identification of the Lairg A tephra demonstrates a more widespread distribution than previously thought, extending the usefulness of Icelandic Holocene tephrochronology further north into west-central Scandinavia. Long-lasting snow cover and seasonal wind distribution in the lower stratosphere are suggested as factors that may be responsible for fragmentary tephra deposition patterns in peat deposits of subarctic Scandinavia.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On the basis of synchronization of three carbon-14 (C-14)-dated lacustrine sequences from Sweden With tree ring and ice core records, the absolute age of the Younger Dryas-Preboreal climatic shift was determined to be 11,450 to 11,390 +/- 80 years before the present. A 150-year-long cooling in the early Preboreal, associated with rising Delta(14)C values, is evident in all records and indicates an ocean ventilation change. This cooling is similar to earlier deglacial coolings, and box-model calculations suggest that they all may have been the result of increased freshwater forcing that inhibited the strength of the North Atlantic heat conveyor, although the Younger Dryas may have begun as an anomalous meltwater event.

  • Holocene environmental change in Kamchatka: A synopsis
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Global and Planetary Change. - : Elsevier BV. - 1872-6364 .- 0921-8181. ; 134, s. 166-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a synthesis of the results of a multiproxy, multisite, palaeoecological study of Holocene environmental change in Kamchatka, Far East Russia, details of which are presented elsewhere in the volume. We summarise the results of the analyses of pollen, diatom, chironomid, and testate amoebae assemblages, together with stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon, and sediment characteristics from the sediments of five lakes and a peat succession on a latitudinal gradient of the Kamchatka Peninsula, to infer environmental change and establish the major climate forcers and climatic teleconnections. There are synchronous shifts in the assemblage composition of most of the biota and across most sites at 6.5-62 ka BP, 5.2 ka BP, 4.0 ka BP, and 3.5 ka BP, suggesting a response to strong regional climate forcing at these times. These dates correspond to the warmest part of the Holocene Thermal Maximum (HTM) (6.5-6.2 ka BP), the beginning of the Neoglacial cooling (5.2 ka BP), the coolest and wettest part of the Neoglacial (4.0 ka BP), and a switch to warmer and drier conditions at 3.5 ka BP. Our results provide evidence for the penetration and domination of different air masses at different periods during the Holocene. Cool and dry periods in winter (e.g., at 6.0 ka BP) were driven by a relatively weak pressure gradient between the Siberian High and the Aleutian Low, whereas cool, wet periods in winter (e.g., the Neoglacial and during the LIA) developed when these two systems increased in strength. Warm, dry, continental periods in summer (e.g., at 2.5 ka BP) were driven by a weakening of the Siberian High. We find that the timing of the HTM in Kamchatka is later than in the Eurasian arctic but similar to northern Europe and the sub-arctic part of eastern Siberia. This progressive onset of the HTM was due to the effects of postglacial ice-sheet decay that modulated the routes of westerly storm tracks in Eurasia. A major ecosystem driver was the Siberian dwarf pine Pinus pumila, which spread northward during the Holocene in response to increasing winter snow, and caused water chemistry changes on arrival in the catchments of our study lakes and a response in diatom and chironomid assemblages. We also detect shortterm responses, especially in diatom assemblages, to water chemistry changes following volcanic ash deposits. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

  • Cryptotephra sedimentation processes within two lacustrine sequences from west central Sweden
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The Holocene. - : SAGE Publications. - 0959-6836 .- 1477-0911. ; 17:3, s. 319-330
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Distal tephra horizons, particularly within lacustrine sequences, are increasingly being used as time-synchronous marker horizons within palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental investigations. As sedimentary features marking the presence of these so-called cryptotephras are absent to the naked eye, it is of some importance that the stratigraphic position representing primary airfall, and likewise the timing Of the volcanic event, is accurately and consistently recorded amongst these deposits. Often tephra shards from a cryptotephra deposit can be found spanning several centimetres of sediments within lacustrine and peat sequences. Very few studies, however, have looked in detail at the sedimentation and vertical distribution of cryptotephra deposits within such sequences and, more importantly, the criteria for defining the correct stratigraphic position of the volcanic event. Two sediment cores from Lake Spaime and Lake Getvaltjarnen, west central Sweden are employed to investigate in detail the vertical distribution of the tephra shards derived from the AD 1875 eruption of the Askja volcano in Iceland. Detailed geochemical analysis of shards from both records indicate that products of the Askja eruption are present for at least 120 years and thus emphasize the importance of carefully identifying the correct horizon that marks the timing of the volcanic event rather than shards resulting from a period of reworking or downward migration. Both sites yield contrasting shard concentration profiles and thus raise a number of questions regarding the influence of site-specific processes on cryptotephra sedimentation, particularly the role of snow-beds acting as tephra traps, the possibility of reworking, and downward migration of shards in soft sediment. A second tephra is also identified at Lake Getvaltjarnen and is believed to originate from the AD 1477 Veidivotn eruption and represents the first occurrence of this tephra outside of Iceland.

    • This paper reports large active area (15 mm(2)) 4H-SiC BJTS with a low V(CESAT)=0.6 V at 1(C)=20 A (J(C)=133 A/cm(2)) and an open-base breakdown voltage BV(CEO)=2.3 kV at T=25 degrees C. The corresponding room temperature specific on-resistance R(SP.ON)=4.5 m Omega cm(2) is to the authors knowledge the lowest reported value for a large area SiC BJT blocking more than 2 kV. The onstate and blocking characteristics were analyzed by device simulation and found to be in good agreement with measurements. Fast switching with VcE rise- and fall-times in the range of 20-30 ns was demonstrated for a 6 A 1200 V rated SiC BJT. It was concluded that high dynamic base currents are essential for fast switching to charge the BJT parasitic base-collector capacitance. In addition, 10 mu s short-circuit capability with V(CE)=800 V was shown for the 1200 V BJT.

  • Peripheral and central H1 histamine receptor occupancy by levocetirizine, a non-sedating antihistamine; a time course study in the guinea pig
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Pharmacology. - : Wiley. - 0007-1188 .- 1476-5381. ; 151:7, s. 1129-1136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The H(1) receptor occupancy (H1RO) in brain is an indicator of central side effects of antihistamines. Here, we determined the kinetics of central and peripheral H1RO by levocetirizine in relation to its brain and plasma concentration, and investigated the role of the blood-brain barrier in any delay in brain H1RO. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Concentration-time profiles in plasma and brain were obtained after 0.1 and 1 mg kg(-1) oral doses of levocetirizine in guinea pigs. H1RO in brain was measured ex vivo using [3H]-mepyramine and, in the periphery, by measuring the degree of inhibition of histamine-induced contractions of isolated guinea pig ileum. KEY RESULTS: The concentration-time profile of levocetirizine indicated lower levels (partition coefficient, K(p)=0.06-0.08), higher t(max) (2-4 h vs 1-1.5 h) and longer terminal half-life (4-5.6 h vs 2.1-2.8 h) in brain than plasma. The H1RO at 0.1 and 1 mg kg(-1) were 75% and 97%, respectively, at 1 hr in the periphery and, in the brain, were <20% and 28-67% respectively, at all time points studied. Brain H1RO vs plasma concentrations profile showed a delay, but not when compared to brain concentrations. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: This study demonstrates an effective peripheral antihistamine effect of levocetirizine without central adverse effects at the dose close to human therapeutic dose. The slow increase in H1RO in the brain with time was caused by slow blood-brain barrier transport of levocetirizine. This demonstrates the importance of measuring time course of brain H1RO in relation to brain concentrations of drugs.

  • Holocene changes in atmospheric circulation recorded in the oxygen-isotope stratigraphy of lacustrine carbonates from northern Sweden
  • 2002

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The oxygen-isotope composition of local precipitation (delta(18)O(P)) is reconstructed from carbonate lake-sediment components in a sediment core covering the last 10000 calendar years from Lake Tibetanus, a small, hydrologically open, groundwater-fed take in the Abisko area, northern Sweden. Comparison of the delta(18)O(P) history with a pollen-based palaeotemperature record from the same core clearly reveals pronounced deviations from the normally expected temporal delta(18)O(P)-temperature relation (so-called 'Dansgaard relation') that may be a function of changing oceanicity. The transition from relatively moist, maritime conditions in the early Holocene to a much drier climate after 6500 cal. BP is reflected by major changes in forest extent and composition as recorded by pollen and plant macrofossil data. At the time of maximum influence of westerly air-mass circulation (high zonal index) c. 9500 cal. BP, brought about by high summer insolation and enhanced meridional pressure gradients. delta(18)O(P) at Lake Tibetanus was about 2%, higher than would be predicted by the modem isotope-temperature relation, The occurrence of long-term changes in delta(18)O(P)-temperature relations, which are more sensitive measures of palaeoclimate than either delta(18)O(P) or temperature alone, needs to be taken into account when extracting palaeoclimatic information from continental oxygen-isotope records.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Paleolimnology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-2728 .- 1573-0417. ; 34:4, s. 471-480
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Highly resolved sediment stratigraphic and stable isotope records from a lake in south-central Sweden give evidence of relatively humid summers during the wide-spread cold event at c. 8200 cal. BP. A transient lake-level rise led to increased catchment erosion followed by enhanced phytoplankton production and disturbance of the Chara-dominated algal community. An associated increase in the deposition of organic material resulted in hypolimnetic oxygen deficit and methane formation as inferred from elevated sulphur content of the sediments and strong depletion in C-13 of bulk organic material. In combination with dry and cold winter conditions as revealed by other proxy records, these data suggest the development of a strongly seasonal climate in northwestern Europe in response to altered atmospheric circulation at this stage. Enhanced zonal circulation with frequent cyclonic activity and increased effective humidity probably characterized the summer climate of southern and central Scandinavia, consistent with conditions inferred for continental Europe. In contrast, the winter climate was dominated by blocking high-pressure circulation, giving rise to cold and dry conditions.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Journal of Paleolimnology. - 0921-2728. ; 18:3, s. 219-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A 9000-year carbonate-rich sediment sequence from a small hard-water lake in northernmost Sweden was studied by means of multi-component stable carbon isotope analysis. Radiocarbon dating of different sediment fractions provides chronologic control and reveals a rather constant hard-water effect through time, suggesting lake has remained hydrologically open throughout the Holocene. Successive depletion of C-13 in fine-grained calcite and carbonate shells during the early Holocene correlate with a change in catchment vegetation from pioneer herb communities to boreal forest. The vegetational change and associated soil development likely gave rise to an increased supply of C-13-depleted carbon dioxide in groundwater recharging the lake. This process is therefore believed to be the main cause of decreasing values of delta(13)C in dissolved inorganic carbon of the lake and thereby in limnic carbonates. Strongly C-13-depleted sedimentary organic matter may be related to enhanced kinetic fractionation during photosynthetic assimilation by means of proton pumping in Characean algae. This interpretation is supported by a substantial offset between delta(13)C of DIC as recorded by mollusc shells and delta(13)C Of fine-grained calcite.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Holocene sediment sequence from Lake Igelsjon, south central Sweden, was studied by stable oxygen- and carbon-isotope analyses of different carbonate components. The deposit, which covers the time-span from ca 11,500 cal BP to the present, was laid down in a small, kettle-hole lake, the hydrological balance of which is presently dominated by groundwater flow. Isotopic records obtained on bulk carbonates originating mainly from summer-produced, calcitic algal encrustations exhibit several rapid shifts of more than 2parts per thousand, likely reflecting pronounced hydrological variations. Corresponding isotopic data obtained on calcitic gastropod opercula from parts of the profile show subdued responses to major climatic shifts, probably related to an extended calcification season. The isotopic records were complemented by studies of modern isotope hydrology, and our interpretations are based on a simplistic climate-hydrology model in which variations in groundwater generation within the lake catchment produce changes in groundwater level and related adjustments of lake level and surface/volume ratio of the basin during the ice-free season. Assumed periods of decreased lake volume in a relatively dry climate (low lake level) are characterised by enrichment in O-18 and C-13 resulting from increased evaporation/inflow ratio and atmospheric equilibration, respectively. In clear contrast to this situation, intervals of more humid climatic conditions give rise to increased lake volume (high lake level), possibly surface over flow, and relatively depleted isotopic ratios. Relatively humid conditions, which may correlate to a wide-spread cooling event recorded by various proxies across the North Atlantic region, are indicated by distinct isotopic shifts at ca 8300 and 8000 cal BP, bracketing a period of O-18-depletion. The period between ca 8000 and 4000 cal BP was characterised by relatively dry and stable climatic conditions, whereas the subsequent part of the Holocene experienced a more humid and variable climate following marked and coherent depletions in O-18 and C-13 at ca 4000 cal BP. • Delayed maximum northern European summer temperatures during the Last Interglacial as a result of Greenland Ice Sheet melt
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Geology. - 0091-7613. ; 45:1, s. 23-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we report a new quantitative mean July temperature reconstruction using non-biting midges (chironomids) from the Danish Last Interglacial (LIG) site Hollerup (spanning 127-116 ka). We find that peak mean July temperatures of 17.5 °C, similar to those of the present day (1961-1990 CE), were reached shortly before the onset of the regional Carpinus pollen zone. Through comparison to terrestrial and marine sequences we demonstrate that peak summer warmth took place some three millennia after the onset of LIG warming in Europe, a marked delay in line with records from the North Atlantic. Crucially, the warmest northern European summer temperatures appear to follow maximum Greenland Ice Sheet mass loss, implying that meltwater substantially reduced Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and depressed European temperatures during the early part of the interglacial.

  • Provoking symptoms to relieve symptoms : A randomized controlled dismantling study of exposure therapy in irritable bowel syndrome
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Behaviour Research and Therapy. - : Elsevier. - 0005-7967 .- 1873-622X. ; 55:1, s. 27-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An internet-delivered cognitive behavioral treatment (ICBT) based on systematic exposure exercises has previously shown beneficial effects for patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Exposure exercises may be perceived as difficult for patients to perform because of the elicited short-term distress and clinicians may be reluctant to use these interventions. The aim of this study was to compare ICBT with the same protocol without systematic exposure (ICBT-WE) to assess if exposure had any incremental value. This randomized controlled dismantling study included 309 participants diagnosed with IBS. The treatment interventions lasted for 10 weeks and included online therapist contact. ICBT-WE comprised mindfulness, work with life values, acceptance, and encouraged reduced avoidance behaviors, while ICBT also included systematic exposure to IBS symptoms and related situations. Severity of IBS symptoms was measured with the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale-IBS version (GSRS-IBS). The between-group Cohen's don GSRS-IBS was 0.47(95% CI: 0.23-0.70) at post-treatment and 0.48 (95% CI: 0.20-0.76) at 6-month follow-up, favoring ICBT. We conclude that the systematic exposure included in the ICBT protocol has incremental effects over the other components in the protocol. This study provides evidence for the utility of exposure exercises in psychological treatments for IBS.

  • Quantitative Assessment of Drug Delivery to Tissues and Association with Phospholipidosis: A Case Study with Two Structurally Related Diamines in Development
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Molecular Pharmaceutics. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1543-8384 .- 1543-8392. ; 14:12, s. 4362-4373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drug induced phospholipidosis (PLD) may be observed in the preclinical phase of drug development and pose strategic questions. As lysosomes have a central role in pathogenesis of PLD, assessment of lysosomal concentrations is important for understanding the pharmacokinetic basis of PLD manifestation and forecast of potential clinical appearance. Herein we present a systematic approach to provide insight into tissue-specific PLD by evaluation of unbound intracellular and lysosomal (reflecting acidic organelles) concentrations of two structurally related diprotic amines, GRT1 and GRT2. Their intratissue distribution was assessed using brain and lung slice assays. GRT1 induced PLD both in vitro and in vivo. GRT1 showed a high intracellular accumulation that was more pronounced in the lung, but did not cause cerebral PLD due to its effective efflux at the blood-brain barrier. Compared to GRT1, GRT2 revealed higher interstitial fluid concentrations in lung and brain, but more than 30-fold lower lysosomal trapping capacity. No signs of PLD were seen with GRT2. The different profile of GRT2 relative to GRT1 is due to a structural change resulting in a reduced basicity of one amino group. Hence, by distinct chemical modifications, undesired lysosomal trapping can be separated from desired drug delivery into different organs. In summary, assessment of intracellular unbound concentrations was instrumental in delineating the intercompound and intertissue differences in PLD induction in vivo and could be applied for identification of potential lysosomotropic compounds in drug development.

  • Spatial structure of the 8200 cal yr BP event in northern Europe
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Climate of the Past. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1814-9324 .- 1814-9332. ; 3:2, s. 225-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A synthesis of well-dated high-resolution pollen records suggests a spatial structure in the 8200 cal yr BP event in northern Europe. The temperate, thermophilous tree taxa, especially Corylus, Ulmus, and Alnus, decline abruptly between 8300 and 8000 cal yr BP at most sites located south of 61° N, whereas there is no clear change in pollen values at the sites located in the North-European tree-line region. Pollen-based quantitative temperature reconstructions and several other, independent palaeoclimate proxies, such as lacustrine oxygen-isotope records, reflect the same pattern, with no detectable cooling in the sub-arctic region. The observed patterns challenges the general view of the wide-spread occurrence of the 8200 cal yr BP event in the North Atlantic region. An alternative explanation is that the cooling during the 8200 cal yr BP event took place mostly during the winter and spring, and the ecosystems in the south responded sensitively to the cooling during the onset of the growing season. In contrast, in the sub-arctic area, where the vegetation was still dormant and lakes ice-covered, the cold event is not reflected in pollen-based or lake-sediment-based records.

  • New insights into Holocene atmospheric circulation dynamics in central Scandinavia inferred from oxygen-isotope records of lake-sediment cellulose
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Boreas. - : Wiley. - 1502-3885 .- 0300-9483. ; 39:4, s. 770-782
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cellulose-inferred lakewater oxygen-isotope records have been obtained from two hydrologically open basins (Lake Spaime and Lake Svartkalstjarn), located on a west east transect across central Sweden, to investigate changes in atmospheric circulation patterns during the Holocene. The Lake Spaime delta O-18 record is sensitive to changes in the seasonal distribution of precipitation in the Scandes Mountains of west-central Sweden, and thus generally portrays variations in delta O-18 of precipitation (delta O-18(P)) that are governed predominantly by the influence of air masses originating from the North Atlantic. In contrast, the Lake Svartkalstjarn delta O-18 record appears to reflect the varying influence of air masses delivering moisture from the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea. A comparison of inferred changes in delta O-18(P) over the Holocene between the two sites reveals systematic patterns of variability over widely different time scales. These include: (1) a previously recognized long-term regional decline in delta O-18(P), possibly in response to the declining vigour of Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation related to decreasing summer solar insolation; (2) newly identified inverse centennial- to millennial-scale delta O-18(P) fluctuations at the two sites that may be linked to changes in modes of atmospheric circulation analogous to those described at interannual to multidecadal time scales by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index; and (3) a prolonged interval of apparent climatic stability in the mid-Holocene (c. 6300-4200 cal. yr BP) characterized by persistently negative NAO-like circulation.
