I rapporten redovisas resultat från verksamheten inom Programområde Luft avseende mätningar (genomförda av IVL, SU, SLU och SMHI) till och med 2019 och regionala modellberäkningar (utförda av SMHI) till och med 2018.För flertalet av de luftföroreningskomponenter som övervakas inom den nationella miljöövervakningen har det, sedan mätningarna startade för mellan 20 och 40 år sedan, generellt sett skett en avsevärd förbättring avseende såväl halter i luft som deposition i bakgrundsmiljö. Utvecklingen har dock varierat i något olika utsträckning beroende på komponenter och lokalisering i landet. Föroreningsbelastningen är oftast lägre ju längre norrut i landet man kommer.För de flesta ämnen som det finns miljökvalitetsnormer (MKN) respektive miljömål för ligger halterna i regional bakgrund avsevärt lägre än angivna gräns- och målvärden. Halterna av ozon överskrider dock i dagsläget (2019) MKN för hälsa.

  • The breath of life : womens' experiences of breathing adapted radiation therapy

    • Purpose To describe and analyze how women with breast cancer experience breathing adapted radiation therapy (BART) and to explore how women manage daily radiation therapy. Method Individual interviews were conducted with 20 women treated with BART for breast cancer concerning their perception of radiation therapy. The transcribed interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results ‘The breath of life’ was the overall theme, as the women experienced the breathing as a way in which to influence their treatment and thus their survival. ‘Participating in one's treatment, for good or ill’, was the main category with four subcategories, ‘Knowing one has done something good’, ‘Getting an extra bonus – healthwise’, ‘The experience of being in control’ and ‘Being in a high-technology environment’. The breathing technique became the strategy by which they could manage their treatment and gave them a sense of participation which led to a feeling of being in control. The women also felt that breathing benefited their health both mentally and physically. The high-technology environment was experienced as both hopeful and frightening. Conclusion Survival or increasing the chances of survival, are of ultimate importance for a woman with breast cancer. BART requires commitment from the women, which was perceived as offering them an opportunity to participate in their own treatment, for their survival. Increasing the women's possibilities to participate in their treatment benefits their health and welfare during an otherwise turbulent time and allow the rehabilitation process to start during treatment.

  • Diabetes mellitus in dog - : No evidence for a type-1-like phenotype

    • Aims/hypothesis Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in dogs, and is commonly proposed to be of autoimmune origin. Although the clinical symptoms of human type 1 diabetes (T1D) and canine DM are similar, the aetiologies may differ. The aim of this study was to investigate if autoimmune aetiology resembling human T1D is as prevalent in dogs as previously reported. Methods  Sera from 121 diabetic dogs representing 38 different breeds were tested for islet cell antibodies (ICA) and GAD65 autoantibodies (GADA) and compared with sera from 133 healthy dogs from 40 breeds. ICA was detected by indirect immunofluorescence using both canine and human frozen sections. GADA was detected by in vitro transcription and translation (ITT) of human and canine GAD65, followed by immunoprecipitation. Results None of the canine sera analyzed tested positive for ICA on sections of frozen canine or human ICA pancreas. However, serum from one diabetic dog was weakly positive in the canine GADA assay and serum from one healthy dog was weakly positive in the human GADA assay. Conclusions/interpretations Based on sera from 121 diabetic dogs from 38 different breeds were tested for humoral autoreactivity using four different assays, contrary to previous observations, we find no support for an autoimmune aetiology  in canine diabetes.

  • Type I Interferon signature in Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever dogs with steroid responsive meningitis-arteritis

    • Objective: Dogs of the breed Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever (NSDTR) are prone to develop a disease complex in some aspects resembling human systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from human SLE patients have an increased mRNA expression type I interferon (IFN) regulated genes. However, it is unknown whether diseased dogs also display the typical type I IFN signature. Methods: To test canine sera for their capacity to induce type I IFN response Mardin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells were cultured with sera from healthy dogs (n=25),  immune-mediated rheumatic disease (IMRD) dogs with anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA+) (n=30) or dogs with steroid responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA) (n=25). mRNA expression of the genes MX1, IFIT1 and CXCL10 was measured by quantitative Real Time PCR. Results: A highly significant (p=0.0009) increase in mRNA expression of the type I IFN responsive gene MX1 was detected in cells stimulated by sera from dogs with SRMA, but not from IMRD ANA+ dogs. Expression of IFIT1 was twice as high in cells stimulated by sera from dogs with SRMA compared to both healthy dogs and ANA+ dogs. The mean expression of CXCL10 was nearly ten times higher in cells stimulated by sera from SRMA dogs than by ANA+ dogs and four times higher compared to cells stimulated by control dogs. Conclusion: Presence of type I IFN in sera from diseased NSDTR dogs was found in this study. This implies that this canine model can be used for identification of pathways of importance for autoimmune disorders in humans and for testing of novel therapeutic approaches. Our results can also be a step on the way towards personalized drugs in these dogs.

    • Kinesin is a microtubule-associated motor protein that transports Alzheimer-associated amyloid precursor protein (APP) in neurons. In animal models, impaired kinesin-mediated APP transport seems to enhance formation of the neurotoxic 42 amino acid fragment of beta-amyloid (A beta 42). In man, one study suggests that a polymorphism (rs8702, 56,836G>C) in the kinesin light chain 1 gene (KNS2) may affect the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). To further assess KNS2 as a susceptibility gene for AD we analyzed 802 patients with sporadic AD and 286 controls, 134 longitudinally followed patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 39 cognitively stable controls for the rs8702 polymorphism. The rs8702 polymorphism did not influence risk of AD (p=0.46). However, rs8702 interacted with APOE epsilon 4 carrier status in AD (p=0.006) and influenced cerebrospinal fluid levels of hyperphosphorylated tau in MCI patients who converted to AD during follow-up (p=0.018). These findings support earlier indications that genetic variability in the KNS2 gene may play a role during early stages of AD pathogenesis.

  • A systematic mapping of current literature on sustainability at farm-level in beef and lamb meat production

    • Beef and lamb meat production is associated with important cultural, economic and environmental impacts in most countries worldwide. However, it is also related with sustainability challenges. To enable cattle and sheep farming to develop in line with sustainability, existing knowledge need to be implemented and identified knowledge gaps filled. The purpose of this article was to systematically map the scientific literature on environmental, economic and social sustainability at farm-level beef and lamb meat production to identify knowledge gaps and to point to important future actions and areas of research. Papers published January 2000–August 2020 with a geographical origin in Europe, Northern America, and Australia-New Zealand were included. The systematic literature search resulted in a total of 1355 hits; however, after removing papers which were considered out of the scope of the study, and duplicate papers, only 22 and 11 papers related to beef and sheep farming, respectively were retained for further analysis. Of these, only 11 in total included all three sustainability dimensions. Several papers only mentioned one or two of the sustainability dimensions or put them in relation to that/those main dimension covered, thus limiting the extent to which possible synergies or tradeoffs between different sustainability aspects actually can be studied. This indicates a need for a more comprehensive approach when studying farm-level sustainability. Future research would benefit from a more holistic approach and include all dimensions of sustainability within the same study. Further, focus should also be on how to measure and assess sustainability aspects in a standardized way. © 2021 by the authors.

  • Research on Environmental, Economic, and Social Sustainability in Dairy Farming: A Systematic Mapping of Current Literature

    • Dairy cows are able to convert fibrous materials, such as grass, roughage, and by-products from the food industry, into milk and meat, which justifies their role in food production. However, modern dairy farming is associated with major sustainability challenges, including greenhouse gas emissions. In order to develop sustainable future production, it is important to implement existing knowledge and fill knowledge gaps. The aim of this study was to systematically map the scientific literature on environmental, economic, and social sustainability at farm level in dairy farming. Literature published between January 2000 and March 2020 and with the geographical focus on Europe, North America, and Australia-New Zealand was included. In total, the literature search resulted in 169 hits, but after removing duplicates and papers outside the study scope only 35 papers remained. Of these, only 11 dealt with the three dimensions of sustainability, and several of these only mentioned one or two of the dimensions or set them in relation to that/those actually studied. Overall, the selected literature did not clearly explain how aspects of sustainability are interlinked, so possible negative or positive interactions between different aspects of sustainability dimensions remain unidentified.

  • Sampling of PFAS in air

    • Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a group of more than 4000 human-made substances that, due to their unique properties as being water-lipid repellent, and having high chemical and thermal stability, are widely used in consumer products and industrial applications. Examples of the wide range of uses for PFAS are in pesticides, food packaging material, nonstick cookware, furniture wax and fire-fighting foam in fabrics. PFASs are also used as production chemicals for fluorinated polymers in electroplating and they even occur in cosmetics.Scientific studies have shown that exposure to PFASs can lead to adverse health effects in humans. Exposure pathways for PFASs include drinking water contaminated with PFASs, food containing PFASs from packaging material, exposure through skin contact with products containing PFASs as well as through polluted air.

  • Att utvärdera och använda resultaten – vilka avtryck ger bibliotekens utvärderingar i samhället?

    • Det har blivit allt viktigare för biblioteken att kunna visa på sin betydelse i samhället. Mätetal och utvärderingar är nödvändiga instrument för att kunna jämföra satsningar på biblioteken med satsningar på andra områden. Men finns det en synergi mellan mätetalen och verksamhetens planer och mål? Hur mäter vi måluppfyllese i biblioteksverksamheten? Finns det kvalitetsindikatorer som vi har gemensamma oavsett bibliotekstyp? Hur kan biblioteksstatistiken användas? Vad gör bibliotekens utvärderingar för avtryck i beslutsprocessen? Vad gör bibliotekens utvärderingar för avtryck i samhället?För att svara på frågorna ovan har expertgruppen påbörjat ett arbete med att kartlägga hur svenska bibliotek arbetar med utvärdering. I det arbetet har vi bland annat sett vikten av ett gemensamt språk mellan bibliotekstyperna i arbetet med utvärderingar och kvalitetsutveckling. Gruppen kommer att under år 2014 publicera ett utvärderingsverktyg för bibliotek. Där kan bibliotek finna vägledning och stöd i valet av utvärderingsmetod, i genomförandet och i nyttjandet av utvärderingars resultat i syfte att utveckla och synliggöra biblioteksverksamheten.I det här papret presenterar vi syftet med vårt arbete och den metod vi har använt samt mer ingående berättar om hur vi har tänkt kring det verktyg som vi i slutet av papret ger en beskrivning av – ett verktyg som går under namnet "Utvärderingshjälpen".Vid konferensen kommer vi att presentera hur en årscykel kan se ut vid ett bibliotek som väljer att använda sig av utvärderingsarbete och systematiskt kvalitetsutveckling i nära relation till måluppfyllelse och till dialog med beslutsfattare samt omgivande samhälle. Vi presenterar också hur "Utvärderingshjälpen" skall kunna användas som stöd i det arbetet.

    • The MUC2 mucin is the major constituent of the two mucus layers in colon. Mice lacking the disulfide isomerase-like protein Agr2 have been shown to be more susceptible to colon inflammation. The Agr2(-/-) mice have less filled goblet cells and were now shown to have a poorly developed inner colon mucus layer. We could not show AGR2 covalently bound to recombinant MUC2 N- and C-termini as have previously been suggested. We found relatively high concentrations of Agr2 in secreted mucus throughout the murine gastrointestinal tract, suggesting that Agr2 may play extracellular roles. In tissue culture (CHO-K1) cells, AGR2 is normally not secreted. Replacement of the single Cys in AGR2 with Ser (C81S) allowed secretion, suggesting that modification of this Cys might provide a mechanism for circumventing the KTEL endoplasmic reticulum retention signal. In conclusion, these results suggest that AGR2 has both intracellular and extracellular effects in the intestine.

    • Medical Humanities har varit ett etablerat begrepp i den engelsktalande forskarvärlden sedan mer än ett decennium. Inom forskningsfältet har tidskrifter och centrumbildningar skapats och introducerande böcker getts ut. Under sitt engelska namn eller försvenskad till medicinsk humaniorahar området också börjat göra insteg i Sverige, och har på olika sätt etablerats på flera lärosäten i landet. Fältet har under de senaste åren introducerats och diskuterats i ett antal skrifter, och alla landets läkarutbildningar har någon form av humanistiskt inslag i sin kursgivning. Samtidigt som mycket hänt under de senaste åren är humanistisk forskning inom fältet medicin, hälsa och vård inte på något sätt nytt i Sverige, utan i flera ämnen finns en lång forskningstradition med väl utarbetade teorier, metoder och frågeställningar. Medicinsk humaniora kan alltså ses som både något nytt och något ganska väletablerat. Vi menar dock att något är på väg att hända när fältet nu formerar sig på ett aktivt sätt med fler ämnen inblandade och när det går i en tydligare mångdisciplinär, och kanske också tvärdisciplinär, riktning. Med detta temanummer om medicinsk humaniora önskar vi synliggöra fältet och betona bredden av de ämnen som kan bidra inom det. Därför har vi i det här numret av Socialmedicinsk tidskrift samlat ett antal yngre forskare som på något sätt är eller har varit knutna till Lunds universitet.

  • Atmospheric pathways of chlorinated pesticides and natural bromoanisoles in the northern Baltic Sea and its catchment

    • Long-range atmospheric transport is a major pathway for delivering persistent organic pollutants to the oceans. Atmospheric deposition and volatilization of chlorinated pesticides and algae-produced bromoanisoles (BAs) were estimated for Bothnian Bay, northern Baltic Sea, based on air and water concentrations measured in 2011-2012. Pesticide fluxes were estimated using monthly air and water temperatures and assuming 4 months ice cover when no exchange occurs. Fluxes were predicted to increase by about 50 % under a 2069-2099 prediction scenario of higher temperatures and no ice. Total atmospheric loadings to Bothnian Bay and its catchment were derived from air-sea gas exchange and bulk'' (precipitation ? dry particle) deposition, resulting in net gains of 53 and 46 kg year(-1) for endosulfans and hexachlorocyclohexanes, respectively, and net loss of 10 kg year(-1) for chlordanes. Volatilization of BAs releases bromine to the atmosphere and may limit their residence time in Bothnian Bay. This initial study provides baseline information for future investigations of climate change on biogeochemical cycles in the northern Baltic Sea and its catchment.

    • Bromoanisoles (BAs) arise from O-methylation of bromophenols, produced by marine algae and invertebrates. BAs undergo sea-air exchange and are transported over the oceans. Here we report 2,4-DiBA and 2,4,6-TriBA in air and deposition on the Swedish west coast (Råö) and the interior of arctic Finland (Pallas). Results are discussed in perspective with previous measurements in the northern Baltic region in 2011−2013. BAs in air decreased from south to north in the order Råö > northern Baltic > Pallas. Geometric mean concentrations at Pallas increased significantly (p < 0.05) between 2002 and 2015 for 2,4-DiBA but not for 2,4,6-TriBA. The logarithm of BA partial pressures correlated significantly to reciprocal air temperature at the coastal station Råö and over the Baltic, but only weakly (2,4-DiBA) or not significantly (2,4,6-TriBA) at inland Pallas. Deposition fluxes of BAs were similar at both sites despite lower air concentrations at Pallas, due to greater precipitation scavenging at lower temperatures. Proportions of the two BAs in air and deposition were related to Henry’s law partitioning and source regions. Precipitation concentrations were 10−40% of those in surface water of Bothnian Bay, northern Baltic Sea. BAs deposited in the bay catchment likely enter rivers and provide an unexpected source to northern estuaries. BAs may be precursors to higher molecular weight compounds identified by others in Swedish inland lakes.

  • Halomethoxybenzenes in air of the Nordic region

    • Halomethoxybenzenes (HMBs) are a group of compounds with natural and anthropogenic origins. Here we extend a 2002–2015 survey of bromoanisoles (BAs) in the air and precipitation at Råö on the Swedish west coast and Pallas in Subarctic Finland. New BAs data are reported for 2018 and 2019 and chlorinated HMBs are included for these and some previous years: drosophilin A methyl ether (DAME: 1,2,4,5-tetrachloro-3,6-dimethoxybenzene), tetrachloroveratrole (TeCV: 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-5,6-dimethoxybenzene), and pentachloroanisole (PeCA). The order of abundance of HMBs at Råö was ΣBAs > DAME > TeCV > PeCA, whereas at Pallas the order of abundance was DAME > ΣBAs > TeCA > PeCA. The lower abundance of BAs at Pallas reflects its inland location, away from direct marine influence. Clausius-Clapeyron (CC) plots of log partial pressure (Pair)/Pa versus 1/T suggested distant transport at both sites for PeCA and local exchange for DAME and TeCV. BAs were dominated by distant transport at Pallas and by both local and distant sources at Råö. Relationships between air and precipitation concentrations were examined by scavenging ratios, SR = (ng m−3)precip/(ng m−3)air. SRs were higher at Pallas than Råö due to greater Henry's law partitioning of gaseous compounds into precipitation at colder temperatures. DAME is produced by terrestrial fungi. We screened 19 fungal species from Swedish forests and found seven of them contained 0.01–3.8 mg DAME per kg fresh weight. We suggest that the volatilization of DAME from fungi and forest litter containing fungal mycelia may contribute to atmospheric levels at both sites.

  • Sources and pathways of halomethoxybenzenes in northern Baltic estuaries

    • Introduction: Thousands of halogenated natural products (HNPs) are generated in the ocean and on land. A subset of these, halomethoxybenzenes (HMBs), are released from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Here we consider: 1. Brominated anisoles (BAs), transformation products of bromophenols. 2. Drosophilin A methyl ether (DAME: 1,2,4,5-tetrachloro-3,6-dimethoxybenzene), a secondary metabolite of terrestrial fungi. 3. Tetrachloroveratrole (TeCV: 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-5,6-dimethoxybenzene), a lignin byproduct found in bleached kraft mill effluent. 4. Pentachloroanisole (PeCA), a metabolite of the wood preservative pentachlorophenol.Methods: We examined several ecosystem compartments to determine sources and exchange processes for these HMBs: air, precipitation, rivers, forest fungi and litter, and water from northern Baltic estuaries and offshore. Samples were analyzed for HMBs by capillary gas chromatography – quadrupole mass spectrometry.Results and discussion: All four types of HMBs were found in air, and BAs, DAME and TeCV were also present in precipitation. BAs and DAME were common in rivers and estuaries, whereas TeCV was low and PeCA was below detection. DAME was identified in several species of fungi and in forest litter; TeCV was occasionally present, but BAs and PeCA were below detection. Concentrations of BAs were higher in estuaries than in rivers or offshore waters, showing that estuaries are hot spots for production. BAs were negatively or not correlated with chlorophyll-a, suggesting contribution by heterotrophic bacteria as well as known production by phytoplankton and macroalgae. DAME was negatively or not correlated with BAs and did not appear to be produced in the estuaries; fungi and forest litter containing fungal mycelia are suggested as sources. HMBs volatilize from sea and land, disperse through the atmosphere, and return via precipitation and rivers. Production and biogeochemical cycles are influenced by climate change and we suggest BAs and DAME for following partitioning and exchange processes.

    • The pre-symptomatic stage of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) occurs several decades before the clinical onset. Changes in the lysosomal network, i.e. the autophagosomal, endosomal and lysosomal vesicular system, are among the first alterations observed. There are currently no treatments to slow or cure neurodegenerative diseases, and there is a great need for discovery of treatment targets in cellular pathways where pathology pre-dates the neuronal death. It is also crucial to be able to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases earlier, both to enable early intervention treatment and aid in selecting clinical trial populations before the patient has widespread pathology.This thesis aims at investigating the potential of lysosomal network proteins as biomarkers and therapeutic targets in neurodegenerative disease.A targeted search for lysosomal network proteins was performed in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from AD patients, and seven proteins: early endosomal antigen 1 (EEA1), lysosomal-associated membrane proteins 1 and 2 (LAMP-1, LAMP-2), lysozyme, microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3), Rab3 and Rab7, were elevated. The levels of EEA1, LAMP-1, LAMP-2, LC3, lysozyme and Rab3 were also measured in CSF from parkinsonian syndrome patients: PD, clinically diagnosed 4-repeat tauopathy, pathologically confirmed corticobasal degeneration (CBD) and pathologically confirmed progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) patients. LAMP-1 and LAMP-2 were decreased in PD. LC3 and lysozyme levels were increased in 4-repeat tauopathy patients. EEA1 was decreased and lysozyme increased in PSP, and LAMP-1, LAMP-2, LC3 and lysozyme were increased in CBD. The lysosomal network proteins had different CSF protein profiles in all the parkinsonian syndromes, as well as in AD. It should be emphasized that only a select few of the lysosomal network proteins were observed to be changed, rather than a general change in lysosomal network proteins, which implicates the involvement of these seven proteins in specific pathological processes. The most interesting candidates, LAMP-2 and lysozyme, were selected for further study for their involvement in the pathology of AD.Lysozyme was found to co-localise with Aβ plaques in AD patients and overexpression prolonged survival and improved the activity in a Drosophila model of AD. Lysozyme was found to alter the aggregation pathway of Aβ1-42, to counteract the formation of toxic Aβ species and to protect from Aβ1-42 induced cell toxicity. Aβ1-42 in turn was found to increase the expression of lysozyme in both neuronal and glial cells. These data suggest that lysozyme levels rise in AD as a compensatory response which is protective against Aβ associated toxicity.LAMP-2 mRNA and protein were found increased in brain areas relevant for AD pathology and various cellular models showed complex involvement of LAMP-2 in Aβ related pathology, with extensive crosstalk between LAMP-2 and Aβ. Exposure to oligomeric Aβ1-42 caused an upregulation of LAMP-2 and in turn, overexpression of LAMP-2 caused a reduction in secreted levels of Aβ1-42, as well as changing the generation pattern of Aβ and affecting clearance and secretion of Aβ1-42. These data indicate that the increased levels of LAMP-2 in AD could be an attempt to regulate Aβ generation and secretion.In summary, this thesis reports that utilising lysosomal network proteins as biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases holds great promise.

    • The aim of this study was to apply the regular solution theory of mixed  micelles to gain new insights on the drug release mechanism, when using   catanionic mixtures as a method of obtaining prolonged release from   gels. Synergistic effects were investigated at equilibrium and   quantified in terms of regular solution theory interaction parameters.  The drug release from catanionic aggregates was studied both in a polymer free environment, using dialysis membranes, and in gels, using  a modified LISP paddle method. The drug release kinetics was modelled   theoretically by combining the regular solution theory with Fick's   diffusion laws assuming a contribution to the transport only from monomeric species (stationary aggregates). The theoretical predictions were found to be in reasonably good agreement with experiments. An analysis of the calculated distribution of species between aggregated and monomeric states was shown to provide further insights into the release mechanism.

  • Prolonged Drug Release from Gels, using Catanionic Mixtures

    • The use of catanionic drug-surfactant mixtures was proven to be an efficient novel method of obtaining prolonged drug release from gels. It was shown that various commonly used drug compounds are able to form catanionic mixtures together with oppositely charged surfactants. These mixtures exhibited interesting phase behaviour, where, among other structures, vesicles and large worm-like or branched micelles were found. The size of these aggregates makes them a potential means of prolonging the drug release from gels, as only monomer drugs in equilibrium with larger aggregates were readily able to diffuse through the gel. When the diffusion coefficient for drug release from the formulation based upon a catanionic mixture was compared to that obtained for the drug substance and gel alone, the coefficient was some 10 to 100 times smaller.The effects of changes in the pH and ionic strength on the catanionic aggregates was also investigated, and this method of prolonging the release was found to be quite resilient to variations in both. Although the phase behaviour was somewhat affected, large micelles and vesicles were still readily found. The drug release was significantly prolonged even under physiological conditions, that is, at a pH of 7.4 and an osmolality corresponding to 0.9% NaCl.Surfactants of low irritancy, capric and lauric acid, may successfully be used instead of the more traditional surfactants, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS), and prolonged release can still be obtained with ease.Some attempts to deduce the release mechanism from the proposed systems have also been made using transient current measurements, dielectric spectroscopy, and modelling of the release using the regular solution theory. In these studies, the previous assumptions made concerning the mechanism responsible for the release were confirmed to a large extent. Only small amounts of the drug existed in monomer form, and most seemed to form large catanionic aggregates with the oppositely charged surfactant.

  • Dioxins in atmospheric deposition: comparison of samplers

    • Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs /PCDFs) have great potential for atmospheric long-range transport and deposition. The atmosphere is an important pathway for these contaminants to both aquatic and terrestrial environments. The Swedish national monitoring program for organic contaminants in air and precipitation includes, except PCDD/PCDFs, a large number of different substances/group of substances which differ in chemical and physical properties which not only affect their behaviour in the atmosphere and the deposition process but also the requirements on sampling methods used. This leads to great demands on the type of deposition sampler to be used in a monitoring program where the aim is to monitor several different organic substances and compromises are necessary when choosing sampler type.The overall aim of this study is to compare two different types of deposition samplers for sampling of PCDDs/PCDFs. These two samplers, the IVL-sampler and the MONAS sampler, have quite different sampling characteristics. In addition, brominated dioxins/furans were included in the measurements in order to get an idea of their occurrence in deposition at the Swedish west coast.The sampling program lasted for one year with 4 sampling periods with a sampling duration of 3 months. This gives results showing seasonal variation and the opportunity to estimate the annual deposition.The overall results from this study show that:• Differences in measured deposition fluxes were found between the two samplers with a variation in magnitude between different sampling occasions. A greater amount of dioxins/furans in deposition was measured with the MONAS sampler at three out of the four periods.• The annual dioxin/furan deposition was about 25 % higher with the MONAS sampler compared to the IVL sampler, when LOD (limit of detection) was replaced with zero for all non-detected congeners in the sum of the congeners.•The results from the sampling comparison for the two samplers gave a difference of 25%on annual basis which should be assessed in relation to the given analytical uncertainty which was +/-29% for all samples.The results found here are in agreement with other comparison studies when deposition samplers with different sampling characteristics were used (Brorström-Lundén, 1995). From this and other studies we can conclude that sampling of dioxins/furans as well as for other POPs gives different deposition fluxes when using samplers with different sampling characteristics. The collection efficiency differs not only among e.g. different congeners but also between sampling occasions which differ in ambient conditions such as amounts of precipitation, ambient air temperature and atmospheric particle concentrations. The choice of the type of deposition sampler to be used must therefore depend on the purpose of the measurements and the results should be discussed in relation to the sampling methods.

Planen har avstämts med Naturvårds-verket under arbetets gång.Arbetet har utförts i två steg:1. Inventering av vilka databehov som föreligger,2. Utformning av en långsiktig planI samråd med Naturvårdsverket har behovsinventeringen begränsats avseende internationella åtaganden till att omfatta rapporteringar enligt PRTR/E-PRTR, CLRTAP, HELCOM, OSPAR och Vattendirektivet. De nationella behoven av utsläppsdata diskuteras, både utifrån formella krav och eventuella strategiska behov.Samtliga farliga ämnen för vilka rapporteringskrav enligt PRTR/E-PRTR föreligger har sam-manställts, med uppgifter om till vilka media som utsläppsdata ska avse. Genom att dela upp området i utsläppskategorier kan arbetet med andra utsläppskällor än rapporterande punktkällor kan fokuseras och göras mer överskådligt. Ett förslag på fyra utsläppskategorier presenteras, med utgångspunkt från den kravbild som PRTR-protokollet ställer:1. Rapporterande företag, exkl. utsläpp pga. oavsiktlig bildning2. Icke-rapporterande företag, exkl. utsläpp pga. oavsiktlig bildning3. Utsläpp pga. oavsiktlig bildning4. Diffusa källorPlanen pekar på en rad områden i behov av utveckling. Framför allt saknas till stora delar kun-skap om diffusa källor. I planen föreslås därför en stegvis metodik för hur detta område ska kunna förbättras. Inom detta projekt har en inledande arbete med kartläggning av spridningsvä-gar för 65 av totalt 91 PRTR/E-PRTR ämnen genomförts, i syftet med att bl.a. identifiera vilka av ämnena som kan spridas diffust.Planen omfattar diskussion om kort- och långsiktiga utvecklingsbehov, samt förslag till fortsatt arbete.

    • This report considers the screening of unintentionally produced substances. Substance groups included in the screening program were oxygenated and nitrated forms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as well as nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen containing heterocyclic compounds. Polybrominated dibenzodioxins (PBDD) and furans (PBDF), polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes (PCDT) and dibenzotianthrenes (PCDTA) were also included in the study. PAHs and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were included as reference substances. The results of the screening showed that oxidized and nitrated forms of PAHs as well as heterocyclic analogues of PAHs were frequently found in background and urban areas and in most of the environmental matrices included in the study. PCDTs were found in most abiotic samples while PCDTA generally was below the limit-of-detection. The concentrations of PBDDs were generally below the limit-of-detection but were found in deposition, urban sediment, background sediment, and fish from Kvädöfjärden. The PBDF concentrations in air varied widely in time and space. OBDF occurred in similar concentrations as PCBs in air, deposition, sediment and soil.

    • En screeningundersökning av bensotiazoler, bensendiaminer, dicyclohexylamin och bensotriazoler har genomförts inom ramen för Naturvårdsvekets screeningprogram. Avsikten med en screeningundersökning är att bestämma koncentrationer av de utvalda substanserna i olika delar av den svenska miljön och därigenom belysa viktiga emissions- och transportvägar. Denna undersökning har genomförts i sammarbete med forskningsprogrammet ChEmiTecs “Organic Chemicals Emitted from Technosphere Articles" (www.chemitecs.se) finansierat av Naturvårdsverket. Målet med Chemitecs är att öka kunskapen om emissioner av organiska ämnen från varor. Resultaten ska stödja utvecklingen av svenska och europeiska handlingsprogram som ska minska riskerna med särskilt farliga ämnen. Bensotiazolerna MBT, CBS, DBS och DBD fanns i en eller flera av de undersökta provtyperna. Detektionsfrekvenserna varierade både mellan substanserna och provtyperna. Fördelningsmönstret påverkades troligen både av föreningarnas egenskaper, såsom kemisk stabilitet och tendens att fördelas mellan olika faser, och av användningen. MBT hade högst detektionsfrekvens medan de andra bensotiazolerna hittades mera sporadiskt. En viktig spridningsväg till miljön för MBT är via reningsverk vilket pekar på diffusa emissioner från konsumentprodukter. Förekomst i dagvatten indikerar trafik-relaterade emissioner. MBT och övriga bensotiazoler förekom främst i vattenmiljön medan lufttransport verkar vara av mindre betydelse. Bensendiaminen DPP hittades i vissa fall i till exempel ytvatten, dagvatten och reningsverksslam.DCHA var vanligt förekommande i alla provtyper utom i gröda. Att DCHA återfinns i luft och deposition indikerar att substansen emitteras till luft och att lufttransport är en viktig spridningsväg. Förekomsten i dagvatten och i jord visar att trafikrelaterade emissioner är viktiga. DCHA hittades emellertid inte i gröda insamlad i närheten av trafikerade vägar. En annan viktig spridningsväg för DCHA är via reningsverk vilket antyder diffusa emissioner från till exempel konsumentprodukter Bensotriazoler är vanligt förekommande i miljön både i bakgrundsmiljö och i urbana områden. Substanserna förekom i alla analyserade matriser: luft, deposition, ytvatten, sediment, jord och biota. Resultaten visade också att diffus spridning via reningsverk, deponier och dagvatten kan vara viktigt för förekomsten i miljön. Detta indikerar emissioner via användning av produkter. UVP är den bensotriazol som används mest följd av UV 328 och UV 327. Dessa substanser hittades också i högst koncentrationer.I en enkel riskbedömning för vattenmiljöns pelagiska ekosystem identifierades inga större risker, dvs halterna var generellt lägre än PNEC i ytvatten och i avloppsvatten med hänsyn till förväntad utspädning. DPP förekom dock i koncentrationer över PNEC i Viskan. Koncentrationen av DPP och DCHA i outspätt avloppsvatten överskred vid några tillfällen PNEC. Inga toxicitets eller ekotoxicitetsdata har hittats för någon av benzotriazolerna i tillgänglig litteratur. Några riskbedömningar för dessa har därför inte utförts.

    • The development and deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) are sensitive to public debates that socially frame the technology. This study examines the evolving CCS debates, focusing on the media's framing of firms. Corporations are central CCS actors, and we analyze them in light of the nation-state, which has been emphasized in previous research as the primary context of CCS politics. Empirically, we compare framings of Statoil and Vattenfall in the Norwegian and Swedish media, drawing on a qualitative dataset of news media articles published between 2005 and 2009. We conclude that firms make regular media statements either to foster legitimacy or to respond to criticism of CCS. We also conclude that framing is not necessarily linked to technological success or failure and that interpretations of the technology have different forms depending on whether the related activity occurs in domestic or foreign markets. Finally, we explain the media framings based on the domestic energy situation and politics.

    • Background Previous studies have shown that copy number variation (CNV) in the alpha (alpha)-amylase gene (AMY1A) is associated with body mass index, insulin resistance, and blood glucose levels, factors also shown to increase the risk of Alzheimer's dementia (AD). We have previously demonstrated the presence of alpha-amylase in healthy neuronal dendritic spines and a reduction of the same in AD patients. In the current study, we investigate the relationship between AMY1A copy number and AD, memory performance, and brain alpha-amylase activity. Methods and materials The association between AMY1A copy number and development of AD was analyzed in 5422 individuals (mean age at baseline 57.5 +/- 5.9, females 58.2%) from the Malmo diet and cancer study genotyped for AMY1A copy number, whereof 247 where diagnosed with AD during a mean follow-up of 20 years. Associations between AMY1A copy number and cognitive performance where analyzed in 791 individuals (mean age at baseline 54.7 +/- 6.3, females 63%), who performed Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test. Correlation analysis between alpha-amylase activity or alpha-amylase gene expression and AMY1A copy number in post-mortem hippocampal tissue from on demented controls (n = 8) and AD patients (n = 10) was also performed. Results Individuals with very high ( >= 10) AMY1A copy number had a significantly lower hazard ratio of AD (HR = 0.62, 95% CI 0.41-0.94) and performed significantly better on MoCA delayed word recall test, compared to the reference group with AMY1A copy number 6. A trend to lower hazard ratio of AD was also found among individuals with low AMY1A copy number (1-5) (HR = 0.74, 95% CI 0.53-1.02). A tendency towards a positive correlation between brain alpha-amylase activity and AMY1A copy number was found, and females showed higher brain alpha-amylase activity compared to males. Conclusion Our study suggests that the degree of alpha-amylase activity in the brain is affected by AMY1A copy number and gender, in addition to AD pathology. The study further suggests that very high AMY1A copy number is associated with a decreased hazard ratio of AD and we speculate that this effect is mediated via a beneficial impact of AMY1A copy number on episodic memory performance.

    • Background & purpose Infants on chronic peritoneal dialysis (PD) have an increased risk of developing neurological morbidities; however, the underlying biological mechanisms are poorly understood. In this clinical study, we investigated whether PD-mediated impairment of nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability and signaling, in patients with persistently low systolic blood pressure (SBP), can explain the occurrence of cerebral ischemia. Methods & results Repeated blood pressure measurements, serial neuroimaging studies, and investigations of systemic nitrate and nitrite levels, as well as NO signaling, were performed in ten pediatric patients on PD. We consistently observed the loss of both inorganic nitrate (-17 ± 3%, P < 0.05) and nitrite (-34 ± 4%, P < 0.05) during PD, which may result in impairment of the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway. Indeed, PD was associated with significant reduction of cyclic guanosine monophosphate levels (-59.4 ± 15%, P < 0.05). This reduction in NO signaling was partly prevented by using a commercially available PD solution supplemented with l-arginine. Although PD compromised nitrate-nitrite-NO signaling in all cases, only infants with persistently low SBP developed ischemic cerebral complications. Conclusions Our data suggests that PD impairs NO homeostasis and predisposes infants with persistently low SBP to cerebral ischemia. These findings improve current understanding of the pathogenesis of infantile cerebral ischemia induced by PD and may lead to the new treatment strategies to reduce neurological morbidities.

  • Persistent organic pollutants in Swedish mosses

    • On behalf of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute led in 2015 a project aiming to examine the concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in mosses. Samples of red-stemmed feathermoss (Pleurozium schreberi) and glittering wood moss (Hylocomium splendens) were collected at 83 rural sampling sites. Of these, 20 samples were analysed for the following groups: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), selected organochlorine pesticides, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), dioxins and furans (PCDD/PCDFs), dioxin-like PCBs and perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS). The sampling sites were selected to cover the whole of Sweden, in both the north-south gradient and in the east-west gradient. The sites were also chosen to represent both eventually elevated concentrations as well as low concentrations of POPs. Information on locations of industrial activities, population density and monitoring stations for organic substances in air and precipitation (Swedish national monitoring programme) were also used for the selection of sampling sites. Generally, the concentrations of the analysed substances were very low, often close to or below the quantification limits for the analyses. Significant correlation was found between the concentrations of PAHs, dioxin/furans and dioxin like PCBs in the mosses and the distance to the closest industry, and also to the distance from the southernmost point in Sweden. p,p-DDE concentrations in mosses showed a correlation to the distance from the southernmost point in Sweden, with the highest concentrations in the south. No correlation was found between the concentrations of p,p-DDE (one of the DDTs) in mosses and distance to the closest industry. The concentrations of PAHs in mosses collected at sites located in the vicinity of three air monitoring stations (Råö, Aspvreten and Pallas) were in agreement with the concentrations of PAHs in air, with the highest concentrations in mosses and in air found in the south and the lowest in the north. Comparison between the PAH profile in air and in mosses showed a higher percentage of heavier PAHs in the mosses. This indicates a larger proportion of particular bounded PAHs in mosses. HBCDD and PFAS were not detected in any of the analysed moss samples, which is consistent with a similar study conducted in Norway.

    • Type 2 diabetes and dementia are associated, but it is unclear whether the two diseases have common genetic risk markers that could partly explain their association. It is also unclear whether the association between the two diseases is of a causal nature. Furthermore, few studies on diabetes and dementia have validated dementia end-points with high diagnostic precision. We tested associations between polygenic risk scores for type 2 diabetes, fasting glucose, fasting insulin and haemoglobin A1c as exposure variables and dementia as outcome variables in 29 139 adults (mean age 55) followed for 20–23 years. Dementia diagnoses were validated by physicians through data from medical records, neuroimaging and biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid. The dementia end-points included all-cause dementia, mixed dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. We also tested causal associations between type 2 diabetes and dementia through two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses. Seven different polygenic risk scores including single-nucleotide polymorphisms with different significance thresholds for type 2 diabetes were tested. A polygenic risk score including 4891 single-nucleotide polymorphisms with a P-value of <5e-04 showed the strongest association with different outcomes, including all-cause dementia (hazard ratio 1.11; Bonferroni corrected P = 3.6e-03), mixed dementia (hazard ratio 1.18; Bonferroni corrected P = 3.3e-04) and vascular dementia cases (hazard ratio 1.28; Bonferroni corrected P = 9.6e-05). The associations were stronger for non-carriers of the Alzheimer’s disease risk gene APOE ϵ4. There was, however, no significant association between polygenic risk scores for type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses could not confirm a causal link between genetic risk markers of type 2 diabetes and dementia outcomes. In conclusion, polygenic risk of type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased risk of dementia, in particular vascular dementia. The findings imply that certain people with type 2 diabetes may, due to their genetic background, be more prone to develop diabetes-associated dementia. This knowledge could in the future lead to targeted preventive strategies in clinical practice.

    • We have previously demonstrated the use of pyrosequencing to investigate NRAS [neuroblastoma RAS viral (v-ras) oncogene homolog] mutations in melanoma biopsies. Here, we expanded the analysis to include BRAF (V-raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog 1311), another member of the Ras-Raf-mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathway, and analysed a total of 294 melanoma tumours from 219 patients. Mutations in BRAF exons 11 and 15 were identified in 156 (53%) tumours and NRAS exon 2 mutations in 86 (29%) tumours. Overall, mutations in NRAS or BRAF were found in 242 of 294 tumours; (82%) and were found to be mutually exclusive in all but two cases (0.7%). Multiple metastases were analysed in 57 of the cases and mutations were identical in all except three, indicating that BRAF and NRAS mutations occur before metastasis. Association with preexisting nevi was significantly higher in BRAF mutated tumours (P=0.014). In addition, tumours with BRAF mutations showed a significantly more frequent moderate to pronounced infiltration of lymphocytes (P=0.013). NRAS mutations were associated with a significantly higher Clark level of invasion (P=0.022) than BRAF mutations. Age at diagnosis was significantly higher in tumours with NRAS mutations than in those with BRAF mutations (P=0.019). NRAS and BRAF mutations, however, did not influence the overall survival from time of diagnosis (P=0.7). In conclusion, the separate genotypes were associated with differences in several key clinical and pathological parameters, indicating differences in the biology of melanoma tumours with different proto-oncogene mutations.

    • SMED har på uppdrag av Naturvårdsverket tagit fram denna rapport om föroreningar och belastning från dagvatten. Studien är en del av ett Regeringsuppdrag ”Föreslå etappmål om dagvatten”. Syftet med projektet har varit att ta fram en sammanställning om belastning av föroreningar från dagvatten till vattenrecipienter. Primära källor, potentiella toxiska och hormonstörande effekter samt belastning på ytvatten har sammanställts och beräknats av ett urval av prioriterade ämnen och Särskilda Förorenande Ämnen (SFÄ) och omfattande sammanlagt 22 st näringsämnen, metaller och organiska miljöföroreningar. Dessa ämnen valdes ut eftersom de är kända ämnen i dagvatten, prioriterade ämnen av Vattenmyndigheterna på grund av att de orsakar att god kemisk eller ekologisk status inte uppnås i många vattenförekomster samt att det var möjligt att göra beräkningar av belastning av dessa tack vare att det fanns data tillgängligt. Dessa 22 ämnen har sådana ekologiska, toxiska och/eller hormonstörande effekter i akvatisk miljö att belastningen av samtliga av dessa ämnen bör begränsas eller helt förhindras. Dagvattnets påverkan och effekter på miljön har sammanställts utifrån tillgänglig litteratur. Studierna är dock få och av varierande karaktär, vilket gör det svårt att dra några generella slutsatser gällande dagvattnet påverkan.Antalet föroreningar i dagvatten kan dock vara många fler än de 22 utvalda ämnena. Uppmätta halter i dagvatten har sammanställts från Naturvårdsverkets Screeningdatabas i denna rapport och visar att 74 st ämnen förekommer i samtliga prover av dagvatten där de har analyserats, och ytterligare 117 st ämnen förekommer i en del av dagvattenproverna. Många är ämnen som ännu inte är prioriterade av vattenförvaltningen. Bland annat förekommer ofta metaller och grundämnen, vissa dioxiner och furaner, alkylfenoler, antioxidanter, bekämpningsmedel, kolväten, LAS (Linear alkyl benzene sulfonate) och olika flamskyddsmedel. Resultat av belastningsberäkningarna visar att dagvatten är en betydande spridningsväg till belastningen i recipienter för vissa ämnen trots att arealen tätort är mindre än 1% av Sveriges totala yta. För metallerna kadmium, zink, bly och koppar så har bidragen från dagvatten beräknats till mellan 15% och 17% av den totala belastningen till recipienter i Sverige och kan anses vara betydande belastning. I mellan 451 och 1090 st enskilda vattenförekomstområden är belastningen från dagvatten den dominerande spridningsvägen (>50% av total belastning) till de olika metallerna. Dagvatten utgör 100% av belastningen i 17 st vattenförekomster för koppar, zink och bly, i 12 st vattenförekomster för kadmium och nickel och i enbart 3 st vattenförekomster för kvicksilver. För de organiska ämnena är uppgifterna om utsläpp väldigt osäkra eller saknas helt för många källor till total belastning i Sverige, så som läckage från olika marktyper, jordbruksmark och skog, men de tillgängliga data och beräkningarna som gjorts indikerar att dagvatten utgör en viktig spridningsväg för PAH16, DEHP, Nonylfenol, HCH, TBT, PBDE, PFOS och PCB7 till vattenrecipienter.Betydande bidrag (>25%) till belastningen i dagvatten kommer ifrån mark inom tätorter som används till ”industri, handelsplats, grus- och sandtag, hamn och deponiverksamhet” för samtliga metaller, för nonylfenol (58%), PFOS (54%), PAH16 (40%), HCH (23%), PCB7 (23%), PBDE (22%) och oktylfenol (18%). Industri och handelsplats utgör den största arealen inom den markanvändningsklassen och bör prioriteras i det fortsatta arbetet. Industri och handelsplatser har höga typhalter och höga avrinningskoefficienter som orsakar den höga belastningen. Belastningen i dagvatten av ftalaten DEHP kommer däremot till största del ifrån ytor av ”enstaka hus, mycket grönyta” (35%), ”bostadsområde, mindre grönyta” (29%) samt ”urbant grönområde, idrottsanläggning, flygfält gräs” (25%). Markanvändningsklassen ”enstaka hus, mycket grönyta” utgör den största arealen totalt inom tätorter i Sverige (35% av arean), vilket innebär att den ytan bidrar med generellt stor belastning.Det finns stora osäkerheter i resultaten beroende bland annat på brist på mätningar av ämnen i dagvatten. Beräkningarna i denna rapport baseras på markanvändning som sammanställts av SMED till HELCOM Pollution Load Compilation (PLC7) rapporteringen, typhalter och avrinningskoefficienter inom tätorter från Stormtac databasen samt rapporterade utsläpp i miljörapporter från avloppsreningsverk och industrier i Svenska Miljörapporteringsportalen. Framförallt för organiska ämnen är dataunderlaget litet, vilket gör dessa uppskattningar mer osäkra. Utökad miljöövervakning av metaller och organiska ämnen behövs för att kunna följa trender och sätta in rätt åtgärder uppströms vid källorna och nedströms genom rening av dagvatten.Det stora antalet ämnen som har uppmätts i dagvatten och den betydande belastningen som dagvatten har beräknats bidra med, indikerar trots osäkerheterna på att miljöproblemen med dagvatten kan vara omfattande. Påverkan i form av eventuella överskridanden av miljökvalitetsnormer i recipienterna har inte kunnat beräknas inom ramen för detta projekt.

  • Beräkning av utsläpp av läkemedelsrester från kommunala avloppsreningsverk och potentiell koncentration i recipientvatten

    • SMED har på uppdrag av Naturvårdsverket beräknat potentiella utsläpp av diklofenak, 17-β-östradiol (östradiol) och 17-α-etinylöstradiol (etinylöstradiol) från kommunala avloppsreningsverk till Sveriges delavrinningsområden och uppskattat potentiell koncentration av de tre ämnena i berörda recipienter i delavrinningsområden (SMHIs delavrinningsområden version SVAR_2016) i inland. Resultaten i rapporten baseras helt på beräkningar, eftersom mätningar av koncentrationen av läkemedelsrester i utgående avloppsvatten och i mottagande recipienter enbart finns tillgängligt för ett fåtal avloppsreningsverk i dagsläget. Mätningar behövs för att ge ett säkrare underlag om behov av eventuella åtgärder. Denna rapport ger ett underlag för att prioritera vid vilka avloppsreningsverk som mätningar borde genomföras.Beräkningarna utgick ifrån tillgängliga försäljningssiffror av läkemedel per person (länsvisa för diklofenak, samt nationella för östradiol och etinylöstradiol), antal anslutna personekvivalenter (pe) till varje avloppsreningsverk, rapporterat vattenflöde från varje avloppsreningsverk, vattenföring i varje delavrinningsområde som är recipient till utgående avloppsvatten och litteraturdata på reningseffektivitet i avloppsreningsverk. I beräkningarna användes samma värde för reningseffektivitet för alla avloppsreningsverk på grund av brist på mätdata. Reningseffektiviteten motsvarade medianvärdet från mätvärden i litteraturstudien, som omfattande närmare 70 st referenser, där slutligen 17 st referenser kunde användas.  I beräkningarna antogs vidare fullständig utsöndring från kroppen (100% av försåld mängd) för alla tre ämnen i hela Sverige. Det finns stora variationer i uppmätta halter i utgående vatten från enskilda avloppsreningsverk och resultaten i detta projekt bör undersökas vidare med faktiska mätningar.Resultaten i detta projekt visar att de avloppsreningsverk som hade flest antal anslutna pe och därmed störst belastning (kg/år) av läkemedelsrester i inkommande och utgående avloppsvatten var Ryaverket (Göteborg), Henriksdal, Käppalaverket (Stockholm) och Sjölunda avloppsreningsverk (Malmö). I framtiden bör man undersöka utsläppen och koncentrationen i recipienter från de största anläggningarna som utgör en stor källa av läkemedelsrester till recipienter i kusten.Resultaten visar också att av de anläggningar som hade högst beräknad koncentration i utgående avloppsvatten var nästan alla belägna i turistområden (Tandådalen, Ransby-Branäs, Björnrike, Kläppen, Sälfjället, Böda och Vimmerby). Skillnad i beräknad koncentration i utgående avloppsvatten mellan olika avloppsreningsverk beror till största del på antalet anslutna i förhållande till utgående flöde. Avloppsanläggningarna i turistområdena har därmed flest antal anslutna i förhållande till volym utgående flöde. Turistområdena har vidare stor variation i antalet personer som belastar avloppsreningsverken beroende på säsong, men flödet beror både på tillförsel av avloppsvatten från personer och på annat vatten som belastar avloppsreningsverken. Därför kan det även vara viktigt att genomföra mätningar av koncentrationen i utgående avloppsvatten och i recipienter under olika säsonger. Säsongsvariationer har inte kunnat beräknas inom ramen för detta projekt.56 st delavrinningsområden avseende diklofenak, 12 st avseende östradiol och 24 st avseende etinylöstradiol hade högre beräknad koncentration i delavrinningsområdet än gränsvärdet för årsmedelhalten av Särskilda Förorenande Ämnen (SFÄ) i ytvattenförekomster. För att bekräfta resultaten bör faktiska mätningar genomföras i dessa delavrinningsområden.

  • Utveckling av påverkansanalysmodell miljögifter

    • Vattenmyndigheterna, har tillsammans med IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet (IVL) och Sveriges Meteorologiska och Hydrologiska Institut (SMHI), under år 2012 och 2013 genomfört ett projekt för att ta fram en gemensam modell för miljögifters påverkan på olika vattenförekomster. Projektet har finansierats av Havs- och Vattenmyndigheten (HaV). I denna rapport redovisas underlag till de schablonhalter och till de moduler i modellen, som IVL har bidragit med i detta projekt. Schablonhalter och metoder för beräkning av belastning av metaller har tagits fram inom projekt genomförda av SMED (Svenska MiljöEmissionsData) inom ett flertal rapporter, som denna rapport hänvisar till. Fokus i detta projekt låg på schablonhalter för organiska ämnen och metoder för beräkning av belastning och retention av organiska ämnen eftersom de inte sammanställts på liknande sätt i Sverige tidigare. Denna rapport ska läsas i egenskap av bilaga till levererade halter i utsläpp och belastning på vatten, samt moduler för beräkning av retention av organiska miljögifter och metaller i mark och vatten till påverkansanalysmodellen för miljögifter. Prioriteten i detta projekt låg för IVL:s del på att leverera data och modeller, inte på att leverera en utredande rapport om källor och spridning av miljögifter. Det innebär att rapporten innehåller sammanställningar av aktuella underlagsdata från tillgängliga rapporter, vetenskaplig litteratur och tillgängliga databaser, så långt som möjligt inom projektets ramar för resurser och tid, utan att hävda att fullständig beskrivning av källor och utsläppshalter ingår i denna rapport. I rapporten påtalas stora brister i mätdata och kunskap om utsläpp, vilket bidrar till att påverkansanalysen kan innehålla stora mörkertal i utsläppsmängder. Uppdateringar och förbättringar av kunskap om källor och halter i utsläpp samt belastning på vatten, bör ske genom att tidvis göra nya sammanställningar av tillgänglig information och framförallt genom lokala mätningar för att ge mindre osäker påverkansanalys i vattenförekomsterna.

    • The article is a joint product of researchers working within different disciplines and with different kinds of knowledge interests, but united by a common interest in the question of how aesthetic education can lead to intercultural competence and education of responsible citizens. What characterizes aesthetic education and how can a clarification of pedagogical tools of such education help us clarify intercultural competence as a learning goal? What are the connections between intercultural education and aesthetic education and how can the latter contribute to the former? Our approach to these issues is a practical one. This means that our efforts are focused on a critical investigation of the conditions of the possibility of intercultural education. Our main argument in the article is that the core of intercultural competence is of a particular type, is active rather than passive and open to radically different experiences than our own. Having this starting point, we in the first step identify some tools through which intercultural competence and education can be made possible. The notions of aesthetic education and empathy are among these tools. Identifying these tools, we in the next step connect the identified tools to basic impediments in the way of intercultural education like that of obstacles for intercultural competence to take form like hidden prejudices of educators in order to remove them and clear the way for intercultural education. As a result of these two steps, educators engaged in, and pupils educated by intercultural education, become empowered. They are then enabled to clarify their hidden prejudices and counteract them instead of being steered by them. They also become empathetic and “responsible citizens”.

Other factors also influence the hippocampal volume, but their interactive effect has not been investigated before in cognitively healthy individuals. The aim of this study is to evaluate the interactive effect of key demographic and clinical factors on hippocampal volume, in contrast to previous studies frequently investigating these factors in a separate manner. Also, to investigate how comparable the control groups from ADNI, AIBL, and AddNeuroMed are with five population-based cohorts. In this study, 1958 participants were included (100 AddNeuroMed, 226 ADNI, 155 AIBL, 59 BRC, 295 GENIC, 279 BioFiNDER, 398 PIVUS, and 446 SNAC-K). ANOVA and random forest were used for testing between-cohort differences in demographic-clinical variables. Multiple regression was used to study the influence of demographic-clinical variables on hippocampal volume. ANCOVA was used to analyze whether between-cohort differences in demographic-clinical variables explained between-cohort differences in hippocampal volume. Age and global brain atrophy were the most important variables in explaining variability in hippocampal volume. These variables were not only important themselves but also in interaction with gender, education, MMSE, and total intracranial volume. AddNeuroMed, ADNI, and AIBL differed from the population-based cohorts in several demographic-clinical variables that had a significant effect on hippocampal volume. Variability in hippocampal volume in individuals with normal cognition is high. Differences that previously tended to be related to disease mechanisms could also be partly explained by demographic and clinical factors independent from the disease. Furthermore, cognitively normal individuals especially from ADNI and AIBL are not representative of the general population. These findings may have important implications for future research and clinical trials, translating imaging biomarkers to the general population, and validating current diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer's disease and predementia stages.

I rapporten redovisas resultat från verksamheten inom Programområde Luft avseende mätningar (genomförda av IVL, SU, SLU och SMHI) till och med 2017 och regionala modellberäkningar (utförda av SMHI) till och med 2016.För flertalet av de luftföroreningskomponenter som övervakas inom den nationella miljöövervakningen har det, sedan mätningarna startade för mellan 15 och 35 år sedan, generellt sett skett en avsevärd förbättring avseende såväl halter i luft som deposition i bakgrundsmiljö. Utvecklingen har dock varierat i något olika utsträckning beroende på komponenter och lokalisering i landet. Föroreningsbelastningen är oftast lägre ju längre norrut i landet man kommer.För de flesta ämnen som det finns miljökvalitetsnormer (MKN) respektive miljömål för ligger halterna i regional bakgrund avsevärt lägre än angivna gräns- och målvärden. Halterna av ozon överskrider dock i dagsläget MKN för hälsa.

    • Background and ObjectivesDementia cases are expected to triple during the next 30 years, highlighting the importance of finding modifiable risk factors for dementia. The aim of this study was to investigate whether adherence to conventional dietary recommendations or to a modified Mediterranean diet are associated with a subsequent lower risk of developing all-cause dementia, Alzheimer disease (AD), vascular dementia (VaD), or with future accumulation of AD-related beta-amyloid (A beta) pathology.MethodsBaseline examination in the prospective Swedish population-based Malmo Diet and Cancer Study took place in 1991-1996 with a follow-up for incident dementia until 2014. Nondemented individuals born 1923-1950 and living in Malmo were invited to participate. Thirty thousand four hundred forty-six were recruited (41% of all eligible). Twenty-eight thousand twenty-five had dietary data and were included in this study. Dietary habits were assessed with a 7-day food diary, detailed food frequency questionnaire, and 1-hour interview. Main outcomes were incident all-cause dementia, AD, or VaD determined by memory clinic physicians. Secondary outcome was A beta-accumulation measured using CSF A beta 42 (n = 738). Cox proportional hazard models were used to examine associations between diet and risk of developing dementia (adjusted for demographics, comorbidities, smoking, physical activity, and alcohol).ResultsSixty-one percent were women, and the mean (SD) age was 58.1 (7.6) years. One thousand nine hundred forty-three (6.9%) were diagnosed with dementia (median follow-up, 19.8 years). Individuals adhering to conventional dietary recommendations did not have lower risk of developing all-cause dementia (hazard ratio [HR] comparing worst with best adherence, 0.93, 95% CI 0.81-1.08), AD (HR 1.03, 0.85-1.23), or VaD (HR 0.93, 0.69-1.26). Neither did adherence to the modified Mediterranean diet lower the risk of developing all-cause dementia (HR 0.93 0.75-1.15), AD (HR 0.90, 0.68-1.19), or VaD (HR 1.00, 0.65-1.55). The results were similar when excluding participants developing dementia within 5 years or those with diabetes. No significant associations were found between diet and abnormal A beta accumulation, conventional recommendations (OR 1.28, 0.74-2.24) or modified Mediterranean diet (OR 0.85, 0.39-1.84).DiscussionIn this 20-year follow-up study, neither adherence to conventional dietary recommendations nor to modified Mediterranean diet were significantly associated with subsequent reduced risk for developing all-cause dementia, AD dementia, VaD, or AD pathology.

The aim was to examine the associations between different risk factors and future memory and attention/executive functions, and their interaction with APOE genotype. Methods Participants from a large, prospective, population-based, Swedish study were included (n = 3,229). Linear regression models were used to examine baseline hypertension, body mass index (BMI), long-term glucose levels (HbA(1c)), different lipid levels, physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking, education, APOE genotype, age and sex. All models were adjusted for follow-up time and basic demographics, and, in a second step, all significant predictors were included to examine independent effects. Follow-up outcomes were memory and attention/executive functions. Results The mean age at baseline was 56.1 (SD 5.7) years and 59.7% were women. The mean follow-up time was 17.4 (range 14.3-20.8) years. When examining independent effects, APOE epsilon 4 genotype(p < 0.01), and higher HbA(1c)(p < 0.001), were associated with future low memory function. Higher BMI (p < 0.05), and HbA(1c)(p < 0.05), lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)(p < 0.05)and stroke(p < 0.001) were associated with future low attention/executive function. The strongest factors associated with both better memory and attention/executive functions were higher education and alcohol consumption. Further, significant interaction effects between predictors and APOE genotype were found. For memory function, the protective effects of education were greater among epsilon 4-carriers(p < 0.05). For attention/executive function, the protective effects of alcohol were greater among epsilon 2 or epsilon 4-carriers(p < 0.05). Also, attention/executive function was lower among epsilon 4-carriers with higher BMI(p < 0.05) and epsilon 2-carriers with higher HbA1c-levels(p < 0.05). Conclusions Targeting cardiovascular risk factors in mid-life could have greater effect on future attention/executive functions rather than memory, whereas targeting diabetes could be beneficial for multiple cognitive domains. In addition, effects of different risk factors may vary depending on the APOE genotype. The varied cognitive profiles suggest that different mechanisms and brain regions are affected by the individual risk factors. Having detailed knowledge about the specific cognitive effects of different risk factors might be beneficial in preventive health counseling.

    • Safety data for different anticoagulant medications in venous thromboembolism (VTE) are scarce, in particular for extended treatment.To compare major bleeding rates depending on the choice of anticoagulation during initial (first 6 months) and extended treatment (6 months up to 5 years).A nationwide register-based study including cancer-free patients with a first-time VTE between 2014 and 2020. Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare bleeding rates.We included 6558 patients on warfarin, 18,196 on rivaroxaban, and 19,498 on apixaban. At 6 months, 4750 (72.4%) remained on warfarin, 11,366 (62.5%) on rivaroxaban, and 11,940 (61.2%) on apixaban. During initial treatment, major bleeding rates were 3.86 (95% CI 3.14-4.58), 2.93 (2.55-3.31), and 1.95 (1.65-2.25) per 100 patient-years for warfarin, rivaroxaban, and apixaban, respectively, yielding adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) of 0.89 (95% CI 0.71-1.12) for rivaroxaban versus warfarin, 0.55 (0.43-0.71) for apixaban versus warfarin, and 0.62 (0.50-0.76) for apixaban versus rivaroxaban. During extended treatment, major bleeding rates were 1.55 (1.19-1.91), 1.05 (0.85-1.26), and 0.96 (0.78-1.15) per 100 patient-years for warfarin, rivaroxaban, and apixaban, respectively, with aHRs of 0.72 (0.53-0.99) for rivaroxaban versus warfarin, 0.60 (0.44-0.82) for apixaban versus warfarin, and 0.85 (0.64-1.12) for apixaban versus rivaroxaban. Previous bleeding and increasing age were risk factors for bleeding both during initial and extended treatment.Apixaban had a lower bleeding risk than warfarin or rivaroxaban during initial treatment. During extended treatment, bleeding risk was similar for apixaban and rivaroxaban, and higher with warfarin.

    • Background: As the population of obese and severely obese young adults grows, it is becoming increasingly important to recognize the long-term risks associated with adolescent obesity. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the association between body mass index (BMI) in young men at enlistment for military service and later risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Methods: Nationwide register-based prospective cohort study of men enlisting 1969 to 2005, followed through the Swedish National Patient and Cause of Death registries. We identified 1639838 men (mean age, 18.3years) free of prior venous thromboembolism, of whom 29342were obese (BMI 30 to <35kgm−2) and 7236 severely obese (BMI≥35kgm−2). The participants were followed until a first registered diagnosis of VTE. Results: During a median follow-up of 28years (interquartile interval, 20 to 36years), 11395 cases of deep vein thrombosis and 7270 cases of pulmonary embolism were recorded. Compared with men with a BMI of 18.5 to <20kgm−2, men with higher BMI in young adulthood showed an incrementally increasing risk of VTE that was moderately but significantly increased already at normal BMI levels. Adolescent obese men with a BMI of 30 to 35kgm−2 had an adjusted hazard ratio of 2.93 (95% confidence interval, 2.65 to 3.24) for VTE. Severely obese men with a BMI of ≥35kgm−2 had a hazard ratio of 4.95 (95% confidence interval, 4.16 to 5.90). Conclusions: Men who were obese or severely obese in young adulthood had a marked increase in risk of VTE.

    • Cancer is a risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE). We aimed to define sex-specific risk of preceding cancer in patients with a first-time VTE by conducting a nationwide Swedish registry-based study including 298172 patients with VTE and 1185079 matched controls. This included 44685 patients with a diagnosis of cancer at/or within 1 year before a VTE diagnosis. Female patients with VTE had a higher multivariable adjusted odds ratios of preceding cancer than male patients with VTE (5.5 [99% confidence interval 5.4-5.7] vs 3.9 [3.8-4.0]). The highest risk of cancer in patients with VTE were found for pancreatic cancer (women: 19.6 [15.8-24.4]; men: 17.2 [13.7-21.6]) and brain cancer (women: 17.4 [12.9-23.4]; men: 17.5 [13.8-22.2]). Weak associations were seen between VTE and bladder/urothelial cancer (women: 1.31 [1.12-1.53]; men: 1.34 [1.23-1.47]), prostate cancer (men: 2.17 [2.07-2.27]), malignant melanoma (women: 2.51 [2.07-3.05]; men: 2.67 [2.23-3.18]), and kidney cancer (women: 3.20 [2.49-4.11]; men: 3.33 [2.79-4.07]). In conclusion, associations with VTE were weak for bladder/urothelial cancer and kidney cancer, and strong for pancreatic, brain, and biliary cancers.

    • Knowledge on differences in patients who present with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and those with pulmonary embolism (PE) is incomplete.To determine comorbidities and temporary provoking factors in patients with a first-time PE or DVT.This was a nationwide Swedish registry-based, retrospective, case-control study including 298172 patients with first-time venous thromboembolism (VTE) and 1185079 controls matched for age, sex, and county of residence, free of VTE at the time of matching.Patients with PE were older than those with DVT (mean age, 69 vs 66years) and included slightly more women (PE, 53.4% vs DVT, 52.1%). After multivariable adjustment for comorbidities (within 7years) and temporary provoking factors (within 3months), heart failure (PE: adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.64 [99% confidence interval [CI], 2.55-2.73]; DVT: aOR, 1.66 [99% CI, 1.60-1.72]), ischemic heart disease (PE: aOR, 1.51 [99% CI, 1.47-1.56]; DVT: aOR, 1.01 [99% CI, 0.98-1.04]), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (PE: aOR, 2.51 [99% CI, 2.40-2.63]; DVT, 1.54 [99% CI, 1.47-1.62]) were among diseases that showed higher odds ratios in patients with PE than in those with DVT, compared with controls. Comorbidities registered within 6months were associated with higher aORs than those within 7years. The highest population attributable risks for PE were for cancer (13.0%) and heart failure (11.7%).Cardiopulmonary diseases, particularly with recent onset, imply a higher risk for PE, whereas orthopedic surgery and lower-extremity fractures carry a higher risk of DVT.

    • BACKGROUND: Health risk assessment (HRAs) are commonly used by occupational health services (OHS) to aid workplaces in keeping their employees healthy, but for unknown reasons, many employees choose not to participate in the HRAs. The aim of the study was to explore whether demographic, lifestyle and health-related factors in employees are associated with non-participation in initial and repeated HRAs.METHODS: In an OHS-based health project, 2022 municipal employees were asked to participate in three repeated HRAs. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used so as to determine associations between non-participating and demographic, lifestyle and health-related factors (e.g. biomarkers).RESULTS: Among the employees who were asked to participate in the health project, more than half did not participate in any HRA and among those who did, more than one third did not participate in repeated HRAs. Young age, male sex and being employed in the Technical department or Health and Social Care department in comparison with being employed in the department for Childcare and Education were factors significantly associated with non-participation in the initial HRA. These factors, together with being on sick leave and having unhealthy dietary habits, were factors associated with non-participation in repeated HRAs.CONCLUSIONS: Among the non-participators in initial HRAs and in repeated HRAs younger men and those already related to ill-health were overrepresented. This implicates that health care providers to a higher extent should focus on "those most needed" and that employers should be more engaged in results of repeated HRA's. Future studies should focus on modifiable variables that could make the HRAs more attractive and inclusive.

    • We systematically mapped the scientific literature on the sustainability of pig production at farm-level. Sustainability was considered holistically, covering its economic, environmental, and social dimensions, each consisting of a broad range of different aspects that may contradict or reinforce each other. Literature published between January 2000 and March 2020 with a geographical focus on Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand was included. A standard template with predefined keywords was used to summarise aspects of each sustainability dimension covered in identified papers. We found that papers analysing environmental sustainability were more frequent than papers analysing economic or social sustainability. However, there are many different aspects within each dimension of sustainability, hampering comparisons between studies. In addition, each dimension of sustainability has many sides, making it difficult to compare different studies, and different dimensions and aspects may have complex interrelations. Our systematic literature review revealed that these interrelations are not well understood and that possible trade-offs or synergies between different aspects of sustainability dimensions remain unidentified. This systematic mapping of the current literature on farm-level sustainability in pig production can support a more informed discussion on knowledge gaps and help prioritise future research at farm-level to enhance sustainability in pig production. © 2020 by the authors.

    • The sustainability of future poultry production needs to be improved in order to meet global challenges. The global chicken population has expanded significantly in recent decades, due to increased human demand for eggs and chicken meat. Therefore, it is critically important to mitigate challenges to the sustainability of modern poultry production, such as pollution, the depletion of finite natural resources and animal welfare issues. This study systematically mapped the scientific literature on farm-level sustainability in egg and chicken meat production. The concept of sustainability was considered holistically, covering its economic, environmental and social dimensions, each consisting of a broad range of different aspects that may contradict or reinforce each other. The literature published between January 2000 and March 2020 with a geographical focus on Europe, North America and Australia-New Zealand, were included. The literature search resulted in a total of 428 hits, but after the exclusion of articles that did not match the scope of the study, only 26 papers remained for the systematic mapping. Of these, only three papers covered all three dimensions of sustainability. Aspects of economic sustainability were addressed in 10 papers, aspects of environmental sustainability in 18 papers, and aspects of social sustainability in 23 papers. The findings in this study are an important foundation for the discussion and prioritisation of future actions to increase knowledge of farm-level sustainability in egg and chicken meat production.
