  • Soil moisture remote-sensing applications for identification of flood-prone areas along transport infrastructure

    • The expected increase in precipitation and temperature in Scandinavia, and especially short-time heavy precipitation, will increase the frequency of flooding. Urban areas are the most vulnerable, and specifically, the road infrastructure. The accumulation of large volumes of water and sediments on road-stream intersections gets severe consequences for the road drainage structures. This study integrates the spatial and temporal soil moisture properties into the research about flood prediction methods by a case study of two areas in Sweden, Vastra Gotaland and Varmland, which was affected by severe flooding in August 2014. Soil moisture data are derived from remote-sensing techniques, with a focus on the soil moisture-specific satellites ASCAT and SMOS. Furthermore, several physical catchments descriptors (PCDs) are analyzed and the result shows that larger slopes and drainage density, in general, mean a higher risk of flooding. The precipitation is the same; however, it can be concluded that more precipitation in most cases gives higher soil moisture values. The lack, or the dimensioning, of road drainage structures seems to have a large impact on the flood risk as more sediment and water can be accumulated at the road-stream intersection. The results show that the method implementing soil moisture satellite data is promising for improving the reliability of flooding.

  • AORTA: Advanced Offloading for Real-time Applications

    • We are currently witnessing the second wave of cloud services that go beyond web storefronts and IT systems, aiming for digitalization of industrial systems. Automation and time-sensitive systems are now taking their first steps toward the cloud. The AORTA project aims to facilitate this transition by providing key technology components needed for real-time services running in the cloud. The ambition is to support a future robotics ecosystem that enables a new level of flexible productivity in industrial production. AORTA will develop technologies that allow offloading of real-time services/functions to the edge and cloud. We will build upon recent advances in 5G, cloud, and networking technologies. The AORTA framework will support a fluid compute model where functionality will be dynamically deployed locally, in the edge, or in the cloud and support integration and real-time performance irrespective of where it executes. Results of the project will be demonstrated in a real-world robotics manufacturing and construction scenarios operating via a 5G network with real-time edge and large-scale cloud service. The AORTA technologies will provide opportunities for automation enterprises and system integrators by adding real-time capabilities needed to evolve beyond the currently closed ecosystem. They will also add value to telecom providers and operators that may host these new automation services in addition to their current portfolio.

    • Rapporten beskriver prototyper av kontinuerliga tvåfraktionsinsamlare för övervakning av partikulära luftföroreningar i arbetsmiljö som har konstruerats. En prototyp är personburen och ger möjligheter till insamling av två partikelstorleksfraktioner i 18 diskreta intervall. PIXE-metoden (analys med partikelinducerad röntgenstrålning) används för multielementanalys av de erhållna proven. Även med mycket korta insamlingstider, ner till 5 minuter, blir detektionsgränserna för de flesta element av yrkeshygieniskt intresse väsentligt lägre än sina respektive hygieniska gränsvärden. Rapporten inkluderar resultat från en enkel fältmätning som utgör ett exempel på de möjligheter den personburna provtagaren ger för yrkeshygieniska mätningar och undersökningar

    • Under de senaste tio åren har en känslig analysmetod för grundämnen utvecklats vid institutionen för kärnfysik vid LTH. Metoden kallas PIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emisson) och medger att mycket små förekomster (109 – 1012 g) av grundämnen kanbestämmas i små prov. Metoden är snabb. Ett par minuters analys ger en samtidig bestämning av ett stort antal grundämnen. Analysmetoden används nu i ett stort antal laboratorier runt om i världen och har funnit tillämpning inom en rad olika områden såsom medicin, biologi, yrkes- och omgivningshygien, meteorologi, geologi samt arkeologi. I Lund har metoden huvudsakligen använts för omfattande studier av föroreningar i arbetsmiljö och yttre miljö, varför vi först redogör för vårt arbete inom dessa tillämpningsområden, varefter vi beskriver de fysikaliska principerna för analysmetoden och utvecklingsarbetet med den.

    • An attractive solution to mitigate tars and also to decompose lighter hydrocarbons in biomass gasification is secondary catalytic reforming, converting hydrocarbons to useful permanent gases. Albeit in use for long time in fossil feedstock catalytic steam reforming, the understanding of the catalytic processes is still limited. Naphthalene is typically present in the biomass gasification gas and to further understand the elementary steps of naphthalene transformation, we investigated the temperature dependent naphthalene adsorption, dehydrogenation and passivation on Ni(111). TPD (temperature programmed desorption) and STM (scanning tunneling microscopy) in ultra-high vacuum environment from 110 K up to 780 K, combined with DFT (density functional theory) were used in the study. Room temperature adsorption results in a flat naphthalene monolayer. DFT favors the di-bridge[7] geometry but the potential energy surface is rather smooth. DFT also reveals a pronounced dearomatization and charge transfer from the adsorbed molecule into the nickel surface. Dehydrogenation occurs in two steps, with two desorption peaks at approximately 450 K and 600 K. The first step is due to partial dehydrogenation generating active hydrocarbon species that at higher temperatures migrates over the surface forming graphene. The graphene formation is accompanied by desorption of hydrogen in the high temperature TPD peak. The formation of graphene effectively passivates the surface both for hydrogen adsorption and naphthalene dissociation. In conclusion, the obtained results on the model naphthalene and Ni(111) system, provides insight into elementary steps of naphthalene adsorption, dehydrogenation and carbon passivation, which may serve as a good starting point for rational design, development and optimization of the Ni catalyst surface, as well as process conditions, for the aromatic hydrocarbon reforming process.

    • A synthetic paper is manufactured with a method comprising the steps of: a) providing at least two types of pho to-polymerizable monomers, b) exposing the volume to a three-dimensional light pattern to induce a polymerization reaction, and c) removing uncured monomer to create an open microstructure. The volume comprises at least one monomer comprising at least two thiol groups and at least one monomer comprising at least two carbon-carbon double bonds, where the ratio (r1) between the number of thiol groups and the number of carbon-carbon double bonds fulfils one of: 0.5≦r1≦0.9 and 1.1≦r1≦2. One advantage is that off stoichiometry creates an edge effect giving better defined boundaries between exposed and unexposed parts in the volume and giving a possibility to create thinner micro pillars. Another advantage is that it is easy to bind molecules to the surface to obtain desired surface properties.

Alla biskopar sedan reformationen ges i denna bok en presentation; deras bakgrund, inriktning och biskopsgärning skildras. I en övergripande artikel sätts denna porträttkonst också in i sitt sammanhang. Stav, biskopsmössa och kors är tre av biskoparnas insignier. Strängnäsbiskoparnas kåpor, stavar och biskopsringar liksom biskopsstolen i domkyrkan skildras i text och bild, allt från biskop Rogges medeltida kåpa till dagens enkla resekåpor.   Bakom bilderna har utarbetats inom Strängnäs stifts herdaminneskommitté och är författad av professor Ingun Montgomery, teol. dr.     • The Church of Sweden was democratized in the 1930s when party politics was introduced into church elections. Since then, party politics have more and more been part of the governing style of the Church of Sweden. In 2000 the church was disestablished and a new election system was introduced with direct elections to the General Synod. The system of political parties remained. This article questions the democracy of the church using criteria for democratic structures. It also focuses on the role of the ordained ministry in the governance of the church, as the bishops have not been full members of the Synod since 1982. The conclusions are that the Church of Sweden is not fully democratic since participation in elections is at about 10% and the electorate has few chances to understand what the elections are about. The bishops’ weak formal position in the Synod is not in accordance with the teachings of the church on episcopacy. The conflict between democratic principles, inherited from the Swedish constitution, and church teaching on the ordained ministry and its role has not been fully resolved so far.

    • Numerical models of soil freezing and thawing are being increasingly used in, e.g., agriculture, forestry, ecology and civil engineering. This study was conducted to 1) elucidate the sensitivity in simulation output to the variability of model parameters for the hydrodynamic model Hydrus-1D and 2) investigate how two operational considerations in the model setup, groundwater level and subgrade material (soil texture), affect indicators of road accessibility in northern Sweden. The analysis was carried out by applying the generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE) procedure when simulating laboratory measurements of freezing cylinders and by a more conventional sensitivity analysis, varying one parameter at a time, using road surface temperatures measured during nearly 1 year as upper boundary condition. For the simulation of the laboratory experiment, it was found that, although the thermal conductivity scaling factor, λf, and the convective heat transfer coefficient, hc, most strongly affected the output, no parameter was redundant for the given problem. The frost depth was most sensitive to changes in λf and hc, while the water content in the unfrozen zone was most sensitive to changes in the hydraulic conductivity impedence parameter Ω. For the 1-year road simulation, the frost depth was larger for sand than for the loam and silt subgrades; the thawing period was shortest for sand and longest for the silt subgrade; and the silt subgrade allowed for the largest frost-induced upward water flow. Thus, among the subgrades studied, roads built on silt show the potential of being most frost-susceptible as a consequence of having the largest elevated water content in combination with the longest time of thawing. The study performed indicates that the model can provide information of interest from an operational perspective, allowing for local predictions important in the road construction and maintenance process.

    • Kyrkomöte och partipolitik – går det ihop?  Ibland sägs att Svenska kyrkan är politiserad utan närmare precision. Handlar det om hur den styrs, om dess budskap eller om prästernas inställning? Skilda uppfattningar om Svenska kyrkan speglas också i motsättningar om kyrkomötet ska vara direktvalt eller bygga på val från församlingarna. Är kyrkomötet medlemmarnas organ eller församlingarnas? Den här undersökningen tar sikte på Svenska kyrkans kyrkomöte och tecknar bilden av hur kyrkomötet förändrats sedan 1930-talet och vilken roll de politiska partierna spelar i kyrkomötet, främst sedan relationerna med staten förändrades. Undersökningen avslutas med en genomgång av ett tiotal ärenden från tiden efter relationsförändringen med staten för att se om det finns politiska agendor bakom olika förslag. Undersökningen är en del i en större studie om förhållandet mellan politik och kyrka.

    • Most road design models do not explicitly account for moisture transport mechanisms in roads even though it is well known that water content plays an important role in the deterioration of roads. The Swedish National Road Administration aims to improve the current situation by supporting the development of models that eventually can provide a better and more complete description of the road/environment system. The water transport model used in this manuscript is one such model. The objective of this study was to investigate the applicability of hydrological theories and methods to the road/environment system. Particular attention was paid to flow patterns inside the road as affected by capillary barriers, and generated by mechanisms of surface runoff followed by infiltration into cracks and the embankment. The effect of rain intensity, precipitated amount, and/or fracture conductivity on the flow patterns was investigated using numerical particle tracking. Changes in rain intensity had a small effect on flow patterns but velocities were higher for larger rain intensities. Both changes in precipitated amount and fracture conductivity controlled the appearance of the flow patterns while capillary barrier effects were limited. The numerical code used proved to be appropriate in describing the relevant processes.

    • Söderblom ordered a new Episcopal cope for the 1925 Life and Work Conference in Stockholm. The cope was made after Söderblom's own instructions and is a visualization of Söderblom's ideas. His concept of evangelical catholicity and ecumenism, the continuity of the church and his view on episcopacy were transformed into a beautiful piece of art. With the cope, Söderblom expressed his view on the position of the see of Uppsala in Christianity and his own role and responsibilities among the church leaders of the world. The cope is an interpretation of Söderblom's theological and ecumenical concept.

    • Twenty years ago, the Church of Sweden left its close bonds with the state.  The Church has since then been accused of being politicized as the ordinary political parties nominate their representatives in the General Synod. Most of the members of the Synod have a political affiliation, either through their party or through party-affiliated groups. Does that mean that party politics is present in the debates in the house? I have chosen to study ten different issues on the agenda to find out how the members act. I have also interviewed the group leaders in the Synod to find out more about how they see the relationship between Church and party politics. Furthermore, the Church of Sweden has been accused of being political, interfering with political matters. And, indeed, the Church of Sweden, together with the other churches in the Swedish Christian Council, is political. They all claim that they are not involved in party politics. I have studied one of their actions, the Easter Appeal in 2005, to see if that is true.

    • When Nathan Söderblom became archbishop in 1914 he substantially altered and extended the office of archbishop. This study deals with how and why the office of archbishop has changed from Söderblom’s incumbency down to the introduction of an assistant bishop in the archdiocese in 1990. Is the archbishop mainly a diocesan bishop with some duties on the national level or is the archbishop mainly the primate with minor tasks in the diocese? The latter view has prevailed and the archbishop’s business as primate has come to be regarded as the most important.During the period studied seven archbishops have served in Uppsala. Their ex officio positions, their archiepiscopal arenas, are examined to find out how they shaped their office. Different leadership styles are uncovered and the archbishops’ differing performance and characteristics are examined. These ranged from expansion and renewal (Nathan Söderblom), cautiousness and withdrawal (Erling Eidem), restoration and consolidation (Yngve Brilioth), uniting and dividing (Gunnar Hultgren), institutionalisation and internationalization (Ruben Josefson), ecumenism and peace work (Olof Sundby), and expansion and clarification (Bertil Werkström). In this way the study also gives a comprehensive view of the 20th century Church of Sweden debates and conflicts.The study also covers formal changes that have been introduced to the office of archbishop. The concepts of fields, capital and habitus are used to analyse the patterns and structures of the office during the decades studied. The social position of the archbishop became stronger during the period while the formal position became weaker. The archbishop of Uppsala is since the Reformation the foremost representative and spokesperson of the Church of Sweden.

    • Djupdränering är en effektiv metod för att reglera grundvattenytan och kan, i samband med väggbygge, rekommenderas som metod i de fall vägen ligger i jordskärning under befintlig markyta i kombination med hög grundvattenyta. Dräneringen måste dock underhållas för att behålla sin effektivitet.Utmed väg 126 nära Torpsbruk har Trafikverket under många år haft problem med bärighet, tjälskott och liknande. Problemen bedöms bero på en kombination av dåliga material och för höga vattenhalter på den aktuella platsen.Försök som VTI gjort på platsen visar att djupdränering är en mycket effektiv metod att reglera grundvattenytan. Detta kunde bekräftas vid dämningsförsöken då grundvattennivåerna steg och sjönk mycket snabbt i samband med pluggning och öppning av djupdräneringen. Djupdränering är även en mycket effektiv metod att reglera vattenhalten i vägen, i synnerhet då grundvattenytan utan djupdränering ligger högt i vägkonstruktionen. Tätning av stödremsa och innerslänt påverkade vattenhaltens dynamik. För att undersöka infiltrationen av regn och vägvatten tätades även en del av stödremsan och innerslänten längs vägen.Resultaten kan användas för att utvärdera om täta innerslänter kan vara lämpligt ur underhållssynpunkt av vägar. För att kunna utvärdera den långsiktiga effekten av en tätad stödremsa och innerslänt på vattenhalterna i vägen måste mätningar pågå under ett eller ett par år till.

  • Water and Heat Transport in Road Structures : Development of Mechanistic Models

    • The coupled transport of water and heat, involving freezing and thawing, in the road structure and its immediate environment is important to consider for optimal design and maintenance of roads and when assessing solute transport, of e.g. de-icing salt, from roads. The objective of this study was to develop mechanistic models, and measurement techniques, suitable to describe and understand water flow and heat flux in road structures exposed to a cold climate. Freezing and thawing was accounted for by implementing new routines in two numerical models (HYDRUS1D/2D). The sensitivity of the model output to changes in parameter values and operational hydrological data was investigated by uncertainty and sensitivity analyses. The effect of rainfall event characteristics and asphalt fractures on the subsurface flow pattern was investigated by scenario modelling. The performance of water content reflectometers (WCR), measuring water content, was evaluated using measurements in two road structure materials. A numerical model was used to simulate WCR sensor response. The freezing/thawing routines were stable and provided results in agreement with laboratory measurements. Frost depth, thawing period, and freezing-induced water redistribution in a model road was greatly affected by groundwater level and type of subgrade. The simulated subsurface flow patterns corresponded well with published field observations. A new method was successful in enabling the application of time domain reflectometer (TDR) calibration equations to WCR output. The observed distortion in sampling volume for one of the road materials could be explained by the WCR sensor numerical model. Soil physical, hydrological, and hydraulic modules proved successful in simulating the coupled transport of water and heat in and on the road structure. It was demonstrated in this thesis that numerical models can improve the interpretation and explanation of measurements. The HYDRUS model was an accurate and pedagogical tool, clearly useful in road design and management.

    • Moisture content measurements using time domain reflectometry (TDR) or water content reflectometry (WCR) are basic in many research areas. The goals of this study were to establish a relation between apparent dielectric number and WCR sensor output, to compare TDR and WCR calibration equations for two coarse road construction materials, and to investigate the influence of sampling volume for horizontally installed sensors. Measurements were performed in fluids of known dielectric number and in two incrementally saturated coarse materials. The effect of sampling volume was evaluated using an electrostatic finite-element model. A two-parameter equation was determined relating the apparent dielectric number to Campbell CS616 ( Campbell Scientific, Logan, UT) WCR output (r(2) > 0.99). A simple calibration can adapt the equation to individual CS616, or similar, sensors. For the finer, coarse material, a three-phase mixing model proved best, while for the coarser material no equation adequately described the measurements. Numerical simulations indicated that limited capillary rise, creating a rapid transition from wet to dry close to saturation, was the explanation, warranting caution when interpreting measurements in nearly saturated coarse materials.

  • Water flow and heat transport in frozen soil : Numerical solution and freeze-thaw applications

    • A new method is presented to account for phase changes in a fully implicit numerical model for coupled heat transport and variably saturated water flow involving conditions both above and below zero temperature. The method is based on a mixed formulation for both water flow and heat transport similar to the approach commonly used for the Richards equation. The approach enabled numerically stable, energy- and mass-conservative solutions. The model was evaluated by comparing predictions with data from laboratory column freezing experiments. These experiments involved 20-cm long soil columns with an internal diameter of 8 cm that were exposed at the top to a circulating fluid with a temperature of −6°C. Water and soil in the columns froze from the top down during the experiment, with the freezing process inducing significant water redistribution within the soil. A new function is proposed to better describe the dependency of the thermal conductivity on the ice and water contents of frozen soils. Predicted values of the total water content compared well with measured values. The model proved to be numerically stable also for a hypothetical road problem involving simultaneous heat transport and water flow. The problem was simulated using measured values of the surface temperature for the duration of almost 1 yr. Since the road was snow-plowed during winter, surface temperatures varied more rapidly, and reached much lower values, than would have been the case under a natural snow cover. The numerical experiments demonstrate the ability of the code to cope with rapidly changing boundary conditions and very nonlinear water content and pressure head distributions in the soil profile.
