    • Results in research and statistics in Sweden strongly suggest that the work environment in christian churches could be improved. Fuzzy leadership, in-built structural conflicts and inadequate internal communication are apparent. This study takes its departure from this and examines the work environment in four different christian denominations in central Sweden. The specific aim is to study the reasons behind long term sick leave in order to provide preventive measures to avoid ill-health. The study will be conducted in three phases. In Phase I, data from Statistics Sweden will be compared to information from self-administered questionnares. In Phase II, a questionnaire on psychosocial work environment and health will be distributed to all those employed in the four denominations. In Phase III, interviews with church staff, politicians, trade unions and health workers will be conducted. By integrating all the data, ways to improve the work environment for those employed will be presented.

    • Rapporten redovisar material från empiriska undersökningar med fokus påarbetsmiljön inom fyra kristna samfund, Svenska kyrkan, Svenska missionskyrkan,Svenska baptistsamfundet och Pingströrelsen. Samfunden låg i Sörmlands län,Västmanlands län, Värmlands län samt Örebro län (DUST‐länen). I FAS I jämfördes desamfundsanställda i DUST‐länen med en grupp ur den arbetande befolkningen i sammalän med avseende på långtidssjukskrivningar. De samfundsanställda uppvisade intehögre eller annorlunda siffror rörande långtidssjukskrivningar, än den arbetandebefolkningen under perioden 2001 – 2009. I FAS II distribuerades en arbetsmiljöenkättill samtliga samfundsanställda inom DUST‐länen, totalt 3 436 anställda (svarsfrekvens61 %). De samfundsanställda uppvisade i jämförelser med en referensgrupp (2 010personer i de nordiska länderna), överlag inte någon annorlunda eller speciellt dåligarbetsmiljö. När vi analyserade de samfundsanställda inbördes om deras värderingarskilde sig från församlingens erhöll vi dock skillnader. Stora värderingsskillnadersignalerade en sämre upplevd arbetsmiljö och även fler långtidssjukskrivningar. Fördem som angav värderingsskillnader noteras överrisker (oddskvoter) för flera avfrågorna i intervallet 4,12 – 5,19 vilket inom arbetsmiljöforskningen anses som myckethöga överrisker. I FAS III intervjuades samfundsanställda samt personer med kunskapom samfundsarbete. Bilden som tecknades var att ledarfunktionen var viktig för enfungerande bra arbetsmiljö. Intervjupersonerna önskade en snabb handläggning avarbetsmiljöproblem, man var dock inte alltid övertygad om att samfunden hadekunskap/verktyg att identifiera problem eller att åtgärda dessa. I rapportenrekommenderas att samfunden följer Arbetsmiljölagen och det systematiskaarbetsmiljöarbete som finns för att hjälpa arbetsplatser att själva övervaka, identifieraoch åtgärda arbetsmiljöproblem. Mer forskning om betydelsen av värderingsskillnaderoch arbetsmiljö efterlyses.

  • At the end of the road? On differences between women and men in leadership behaviour

    • Purpose – This study aims to explore behavioural differences between women and men in managerial positions and suggest explanations for differences and similarities.Design/methodology/approach – In order to eliminate any effects of organizational differences on leadership behaviour, this study had public managers responding to questionnaires that measured their leadership style, decision-making style, and motivation profile.Findings – Statistical analyses of data from three groups of Swedish public managers (n=385) revealed virtually no significant differences in behaviour between female and male managers. Regardless of whether there is a female or male majority of employees or a female or male majority of managers, no effect on leadership behaviour occurs.Originality/value – A number of studies indicate that managers' behaviour is different in different types of organizations. This study suggests, therefore, that, independent of gender, organizational and demographic characteristics modify leadership behaviours, thus explaining similarities in leadership behaviour.

    • Bupivacaine is a widely used, local anesthetic agent that blocks voltage-gated Na(+) channels when used for neuro-axial blockades. Much lower concentrations of bupivacaine than in normal clinical use, <10(-8) m, evoked Ca(2+) transients in astrocytes from rat cerebral cortex, that were inositol trisphosphate receptor-dependent. We investigated whether bupivacaine exerts an influence on the Ca(2+) signaling and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) secretion in inflammation-reactive astrocytes when used at ultralow concentrations, <10(-8) m. Furthermore, we wanted to determine if bupivacaine interacts with the opioid-, 5-hydroxytryptamine- (5-HT) and glutamate-receptor systems. With respect to the μ-opioid- and 5-HT-receptor systems, bupivacaine restored the inflammation-reactive astrocytes to their normal non-inflammatory levels. With respect to the glutamate-receptor system, bupivacaine, in combination with an ultralow concentration of the μ-opioid receptor antagonist naloxone and μ-opioid receptor agonists, restored the inflammation-reactive astrocytes to their normal non-inflammatory levels. Ultralow concentrations of bupivacaine attenuated the inflammation-induced upregulation of IL-1β secretion. The results indicate that bupivacaine interacts with the opioid-, 5-HT- and glutamate-receptor systems by affecting Ca(2+) signaling and IL-1β release in inflammation-reactive astrocytes. These results suggest that bupivacaine may be used at ultralow concentrations as an anti-inflammatory drug, either alone or in combination with opioid agonists and ultralow concentrations of an opioid antagonist.

    • In rat microglial enriched cultures, expressing Toll-like receptor 4, we studied cytokine release after exposure with 1ng/ml LPS for 0.5-24h. Dexamethasone and corticosterone exposure served as controls. We focused on whether naloxone, ouabain, and bupivacaine, all agents with reported anti-inflammatory effects on astrocytes, could affect the release of TNF-α and IL-1β in microglia. Our results show that neither ultralow (10(-12)M) nor high (10(-6)M) concentrations of these agents had demonstrable effects on cytokine release in microglia. The results indicate that anti-inflammatory substances exert specific influences on different glial cell types. Astrocytes seem to be functional targets for anti-inflammatory substances while microglia respond directly to inflammatory stimuli and are thus more sensitive to anti-inflammatory substances like corticoids. The physiological relevance might be that astrocyte dysfunction influences neuronal signalling both due to direct disturbance of astrocyte functions and in the communication within the astrocyte networks. When the signalling between astrocytes is working, then microglia produce less pro-inflammatory cytokines.

  • A Study of Professional Development of Swedish School Leaders and their Views on how it needs to be Navigated

    • A school principal has to play many different roles, such as a decision maker, problem solver, instructional leader and change agent. Research studies on profiles and preparation of school leaders have demonstrated many similarities and some differences between school leaders in different contexts. This study undertaken in Sweden, the third largest country in Europe, but with a small population with particular problems of her own, focuses on the profiles and pre-service and in-service training received, and how the school leaders perceive that their future professional development programs requirements to be designed and provided. The sample includes both principals and vice-principals in Swedish schools. Results suggest that the most important reasons for becoming principals were to transform society and the attraction of higher salaries. Only one third had undergone some sort of pre-service training whereas almost all have undergone in-service training. In their view ‘Human resources management’; ‘Introduction and management of reforms’; ‘An induction program’; and ‘Ethics, morals and values for educational leaders’ were the most important topics for pre-service programs.

    • Befogenhetsprövning inom Svenska kyrkan ska enligt kyrkoordningen skydda präster och diakoner från arbetsrättsliga åtgärder från arbetsgivaren som grundar sig på läran, utövandet av vigningstjänsten eller efterlevnaden av vigningslöftena. Sådana ärenden handhas av domkapitlet. Utifrån ett professionsteoretiskt perspektiv kan befogenhetsprövningen antas vara tänkt som ett skydd för professionen.I denna studie har 89 ansökningar om befogenhetsprövning för präster under tiden 2001 – 2019 analyserats. Enligt anvisningar från Överklagandenämnden skall domkapitlen ta arbetsgivarnas uppgifter för goda. Det blir därmed i praktiken arbetsgivaren som beslutar om befogenhetsprövningen skall godkännas.Det finns inga statistiskt säkerställda skillnader i utfall av ansökningar mellan män och kvinnor eller mellan kyrkoherdar och komministrar. För kyrkoherdar handlar klagomålen i stor utsträckning om deras ledarskap medan komministrar anses brista i samarbete.  Över 66% av alla ansökningar bifalls. Nästan samtliga korrekta ansökningar bifalls. Prästernas yttranden har inte visats påverka domkapitlens beslut, huvudsakligen för att prästerna argumenterar i sak. Endast i undantagsfall argumenterar prästerna för att klagomålen har att göra med deras vigningslöften och efterlevnaden av dem. Vissa ärenden avvisas eller upphävs av domkapitlet. Detta förefaller inte påverka församlingarna, utan de går vidare enligt sin planering. Domkapitlens roll är snarast att legitimera församlingarnas beslut, inte att granska dem. De kan därför sägas vara en tillsynesmyndighet och inte en tillsynsmyndighet.Om bestämmelsen om befogenhetsprövning skall vara ett verksamt skydd för professionen behöver regelverket ses över.

    • Media coverage of complaints about priests has generally focused on sexual misbehavior. This case study of complaints about priests in the Church of Sweden from 2001–2013 gives a much more varied picture. Documentation of all the complaints received during 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013 was collected. In all, there are 199 complaints, which correspond to approximately 1.2% of priests every year. The rate of complaints rose and doubled, peaking in 2010. The complaints are categorized in three categories: general complaints, complaints that can lead to prohibition and other complaints. The most common complainant was the private individual (42%), although bishops and colleagues were also responsible for some of the complaints. During the years studied, private complaints increased. This finding is interpreted to reflect an increasing tendency in Swedish society to complain. Com- plaints about female priests are increasing and are now occurring at the same rate as for male priests. However, no female priests have been prohibited yet; only males have been. Sexual issues account for 15% of the complaints, which are outnumbered by other complaints. Decisions made by the Church chapters have changed during the studied years; earlier, the most common decision was to take no ac- tion, but later, the chapters generally decided on some type of action (for example, commissioning someone to talk to the priest or to give a statement).

    • The Church of Sweden (national, Lutheran) was disestablished in the year 2000 and former state obligations were transformed to the church itself. Major changes were made in the oversight of the clergy and all complaints were to be handled by the church. All cases of complaints about priests in 2000 – 2004 were investigated, altogether 159 cases concerning 135 priests. The complaints were about a wide range of issues: from sermons and presiding at common worship to adultery, rape, greed and addiction. The complainants were parish councils, private persons, colleagues, and bishops. In 45 cases the diocesan chapter opened a case leading to admonition, period of probation or prohibition. The decisions were as follows: admonition or period of probation in 12 cases; prohibition in 10 cases; male priests were significantly over-represented. In 7 cases no measures were taken and in the rest of the cases the chapter criticized the priest in a statement, remanding the case to (mostly the bishop); in one case the complaint was rejected. Clergy misconduct in the 21st century is compared with earlier research.

    • What happened after? A study of the careers of priests within the Church of Sweden who have been assigned a rebuke or probationary period.The purpose of this study is to examine whether a rebuke or probationary time affects the careers of priests within the Church of Sweden. It is the diocesan chapter that decides on such measures. The reason may be a breach of consecration vows or that the priest has damaged the esteem of ordained ministry to a great extent. The purpose is primarily to protect the congregations from unsuitable priests.The career of a study group of 35 priests who received a rebuke or probationary period was compared with a control group of 42 priests, who were reported to the diocesan chapter but where the case did not lead to any action. Data were collected for every three years 2004–2019. The priests have been followed through a register­­ study for up to 10 years or until retirement.The careers of priests in the study group are negatively affected. For five years they have an average lower position. The year after the decision, about 25% are without employment in the church. After five years, the careers of these priests are on a par with the careers of the control group.The results indicate that priests in the study group have a worse career than the priests in the control group. This is particularly obvious in the first five years after the decision. The purpose of the disciplinary decisions is partly fulfilled by the fact that these priests for a period do not work within the church.This study is one of the few, which examines the careers of professionals who have received some form of reprimand. It thus constitutes a new contribution to the research on professionals.

    • The clerical ethos has been under discussion since the paedophilia scandals in the Roman Catholic Church were uncovered. However, Church authorities in all churches handle different kinds of clerical misconduct. Church of Sweden authorities handled 159 complaints on priests during 2000 - 2004. The complaints varied: breach of regulations, pastoral misconduct, sexual misbehaviour, addiction, lacking in co-operation, leadership, economic crime, and greed. This paper aims to explore how the church authorities construct clerical ethos (what is acceptable and what is not) in a secular society, which values in some cases differ from traditional Christian standpoints. Documents on all complaints about Church of Sweden priests (3.587 pages) are analyzed and a clerical ethos constructed via the decisions by the church authorities. Preliminary results indicate that improper use of position to get personal favours (economically, sexually) is considered unbecoming. Adultery is on the other hand not considered unbecoming to the same extent.

    • The Swedish schools have been under pressure for change for several decades. How leaders behave can be of vital importance in times of change. The principal is responsible for both the educational program and for the school budget. Two hundred Swedish principals (male and female) responded to questionnaires concerning their leadership style, decision-making style and motivation profile. The results show that 49% of the principals have a change centered leadership style, 38% were primarily intuitive when making decisions, and 44% were achievement motivated. No significant gender differences were found. The results indicate that many principals have fair prospects of leading their schools successfully in times of change.

    • The Church of Sweden (Lutheran) was disestablished on January 1, 2000. The new situation in the Church clearly calls for organizational change. Using well-known test instruments, 240 Swedish vicars were asked about their leadership style, decision-making style, motivation profile and perceived operational demands. The questionnaires were related to a model of leadership strength for initiating and implementing organizational change. The results indicate that most vicars have a relationship-oriented leadership style. Most are feeling types in their decision-making style. Almost 60% were affiliation motivated. Almost 80% perceived relational operational demands to be most important. It is assumed that managers who have a change-centered leadership style, who are intuitive in decision-making style, power motivated and see urgent demands for change and development, will have an optimal capacity for implementing major changes in their organizations. This means that only 1% of the vicars seem to have a propensity for change at a time when many think that change is crucial for the Church.

    • The possibilities for Church of Sweden vicars to manage their parishes in change were explored in 2000. The results indicated that vicars had a low capacity for initiating and implementing organizational change. The aim of this investigation is to assess whether vicars have a managerial style that differ from other groups of civil servants. Using tested instruments, 240 Swedish vicars (response rate 64%), 300 school principals (66%) and 64 social insurance officers (95%) were asked about their leadership style, decision-making style, motivation profile and perceived operational demands. The vicars stand out as a special group of managers with a strong relationship-orientation. Headmasters and social officers are similar to each other in behaviour. The results are explained by that pastoral work is founded on relations, the pastoral training of the vicars and the «weight of history». A contributory cause may be that many priests are perceived as having a «helping approach» to leadership.
