- This thesis focuses on a politically initiated change of academia, that is, the 1998 reform of Swedish graduate studies and how the reform influenced the organization of the education/programs. The aim of the thesis is twofold. First it aims to study how the political governing of graduate studies has been carried out in the reform. Second it aims to study how the political governing of graduate studies has been translated or adapted to local activities on the department level. The thesis investigates how governing is understood by the people who are responsible for graduate studies at eight departments at Gothenburg University. It also goes more deeply into studying one of the reform’s measures or governing techniques, that is, the intensification of the use of individual study plans and how this has been translated into practice. The theoretical framework uses a Governmentality perspective that focuses on different types of governing and exercise of power. I have also chosen to use Bruno Latour’s concept of “translation” in the analysis to show what happens with the reform on a local level. The reform can be seen as the Government’s programme for change. Here, graduate studies are first problematized, and the Government then presents new techniques of rule as solutions to the problems. The proposed changes are thereby legitimized. The techniques of rule that are used are both concrete and more indirect or disciplinary in their character. The reform creates a new regime of government for graduate studies at the same time as the graduate programs’ regimes of practices are left more or less untouched. The analysis shows that those people responsible for graduate studies have an ambivalent attitude toward the political governing. In some areas they seek more regulation or structure, in others they want less. In the same sense they express ambivalence towards the use of the individual study plans. The thesis also shows how traditional academic norms meet and sometimes collide with new ideals. The analysis reveals several paradoxes or goal conflicts that have emerged in the framework of graduate studies.

Glomerular IgG subclasses in idiopathic and malignancy-associated membranous nephropathy

- Background: In idiopathic membranous nephropathy (MN), antibodies directed towards the glomerular phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) have mainly been reported to be of IgG4 subclass. However, the role of the different IgG subclasses in the pathogenesis of MN, both in idiopathic MN and in secondary cases, is still unclear. In this retrospective study, we test the hypothesis that the absence of glomerular IgG4 and PLA2R in patients with MN indicates malignant disease. Methods: The distribution pattern of glomerular IgG subclasses and PLA2Rwas studied in 69 patients with idiopathicMNand 16 patients with malignancy-associated MN who were followed up for a mean of 83 months. Results: A significant correlation between the absence of IgG4 and PLA2R and malignancy-associatedMNwas found. Thus, IgG4 was positive in 45 of 69 patients (65%) with idiopathicMNbut only in 5 of 16 patients (31%) with malignancy-associated MN. The other IgG subclasses did not differ statistically between the groups, IgG2-positivity being present in more than 94% of patients in both groups. Thirty-five of 63 patients (56%) with idiopathic MN and 3 of 16 (19%) patients with malignancy-associated MN had glomerular deposits of PLA2R. Conclusions: We have found that the absence of glomerular IgG4 and PLA2R iscommonin patients with malignancy-associated MN. In our material, IgG2 could not be used as a marker of underlying malignant disease. Finally, neither IgG1 nor IgG3 seems to be involved in the pathogenesis of MN. © The Author 2015.

- Sessioncode: 4-11-D165 Abstract: The debate concerning the postgraduate system’s role and shape has been vivid. We are once again standing before a thorough transformation of the system. The new framework is constituted by increased demands from trade and industry as well as society as a whole. How can these demands be combined in the same postgraduate education system, and what will the consequences be? With this in mind, the project is aimed at investigating the development of the postgraduate education system since the 1990s. The meeting between different actors, both inside and outside the academic field, constitutes the foundation of the investigation. What strategies are the actors using when encountering one another and which logics can be identified in the different fields? These are central questions that we will try to answer through policy analyses and interviews with both graduate students and representatives from university, society and trade and industry. This study will contribute to a wider understanding of the Swedish postgraduate system and how demands of different actors influence its design.
