  • Genome-wide association study of CNVs in 16,000 cases of eight common diseases and 3,000 shared controls
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 464:7289, s. 713-720
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Copy number variants (CNVs) account for a major proportion of human genetic polymorphism and have been predicted to have an important role in genetic susceptibility to common disease. To address this we undertook a large, direct genome-wide study of association between CNVs and eight common human diseases. Using a purpose-designed array we typed,19,000 individuals into distinct copy-number classes at 3,432 polymorphic CNVs, including an estimated similar to 50% of all common CNVs larger than 500 base pairs. We identified several biological artefacts that lead to false-positive associations, including systematic CNV differences between DNAs derived from blood and cell lines. Association testing and follow-up replication analyses confirmed three loci where CNVs were associated with disease-IRGM for Crohn's disease, HLA for Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes, and TSPAN8 for type 2 diabetes-although in each case the locus had previously been identified in single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based studies, reflecting our observation that most common CNVs that are well-typed on our array are well tagged by SNPs and so have been indirectly explored through SNP studies. We conclude that common CNVs that can be typed on existing platforms are unlikely to contribute greatly to the genetic basis of common human diseases.

  • A network perspective on resource interaction : Past, present and future
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The importance of resources as an essential component in value co-creation processes is core to multiple perspectives in management and marketing. These include the Resource-Based View, Resource Integration within Service-Dominant Logic (S-DL), Resource Dependence Theory, Resource Advantage Theory, and Resourcing. In this Editorial we compare Resource Interaction in Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) with these other perspectives, stressing both differences and complementarities. The comparison includes an explanation of why Resource Interaction in IMP is unique when utilized to explain the dynamics of change in business networks. We also introduce and synthesize seven new articles included in this Special Issue, all of which combine Resource Interaction in IMP with other theoretical perspectives in addressing themes such as supply chain management, entrepreneurship and innovation management. We conclude with a proposed agenda for further research, which provides extensive suggestions for underexplored empirical and conceptual themes.

  • Resource interaction in inter-organizational networks : Foundations, comparison, and a research agenda
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 65:2, s. 266-276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The focus of this article is on discussing the foundations, conceptual development, and implications of resource interaction in inter-organizational networks. The article conceptualizes and classifies resources before discussing how resource interfaces enable to utilize, manage, and change resources. In doing so it provides a set of basic principles as to how resources interact at a network level, or how firms combine, develop, mobilize, and manage resources over time. This is in strong contrast to a focus on the acquisition, accumulation, and exchange of resources by the firm. The article further provides a comparison with two other research streams, the Resource-Based view (RBV) and the Service-Dominant logic (S-D logic), in order to better position this perspective on inter-organizational resource interaction. It concludes by discussing an agenda for further research.

  • Strategic thinking and the IMP approach : a comparative analysis
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 36:7, s. 879-894
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is a characteristic of the IMP approach in studying business markets that the emphasis is placed upon rich description and efforts to understand the underlying processes behind interaction between organizations in networks, rather than on the formulation of managerial checklists and decision rules. For this reason, while IMP scholars have made some interesting and profound contributions to the explicit literature on management strategy, the overall contribution of the IMP approach to the strategy literature has been fairly slim. The purpose of this paper is to compare the IMP approach with five important schools of thought in strategy, with the aims of establishing what areas of agreement and disagreement exist and identifying whether the IMP approach can yield unique insights into strategy, strategizing, and the strategy process. We compare and contrast the IMP approach with, in turn, the rational planning approach to strategy associated with Ansoff, the positioning approach associated with Porter, the resource-based view associated with Barney, the deliberate/emergent approach associated with Mintzberg, and the strategy-as-practice approach associated with Whittington. As we move through these five schools of thought - which are addressed in a roughly chronological order - we discern an increasing degree of alignment with the assumptions and methods of IMP scholars. The outcome from our analysis is a suggested research agenda designed to bring the concepts and methods of industrial network research to bear upon strategy, strategizing, and the strategy process.

  • Resource interaction and resource integration: Similarities, differences, reflections
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 91, s. 385-396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to provide a state-of-the-art comparison of the conceptualization of resources in ‘Resource Interaction’ (IMP) and ‘Resource Integration’ (SDL). Both are engaged with understanding how value is (co)-created, but with different emphases. Existing comparisons are limited and out of date. We trace how each has evolved over time by analyzing key developments. The focus of SDL has shifted from operant resources towards resource integration, and from a dyadic view towards ecosystem contexts. Within IMP, research takes a network perspective in investigating the nature of resource interaction in a variety of empirical contexts. An analysis of similarities and differences highlights key assumptions, the classification of resources, and the role for the actor. The comparison offers a thorough understanding of Resource Interaction and Resource Integration. The paper concludes by proposing suggestions for further research for Resource Interaction.

  • Boundary objects in multi-actor interactions within tightly structured networks
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: the 27th Annual IMP Conference. - Glasgow, Scotland. ; , s. 1-19
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While there are many papers investigating relationship development and relationship management in IMP, work conceptualising interaction remains limited. This is in particular when studying interaction beyond the level of the dyad. In this paper we shift the empirical lens from the single long-term dyadic relationship to multiple relationships studied across a short time frame. Data from a several court cases relating to the Norwegian food sector captures an intensive set of interactions across five actors over a six month period. We illustrate how boundary objects influence interaction attempts within a network. Connecting and disconnecting effects are produced in the negotiations between multiple retailers and producers as a result of the ongoing use of boundary objects.

  • Business networks and sustainability : Past, present and future
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 111, s. A10-A17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing call for more network-level research on sustainability within marketing that avoids a narrow interorganisational focus. Business networks have a crucial role to play in reorganising and innovating to achieve sustainability and are met with significant challenges because of the scale and scope of changes necessary. We propose connectedness as central to understanding networked, interorganisational responses to the sustainability shift. We contribute by highlighting how systemic interdependence across organisations, which is developed through business network connectedness, is core to achieving sustainable networks and sustainable markets. The text provides an overview of current research on sustainability in business networks before synthesizing six new articles that address multiple sustainability challenges. The editorial concludes with an agenda for further research arranged around four main themes, including network dynamics and measuring and valuing in investigating the transformative change needed by all business sectors.

  • Coordinating Activity Interdependencies in the Contemporary Economy : The Principle of Distributed Control
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Management. - : Blackwell Publishing. - 1045-3172 .- 1467-8551. ; 34:3, s. 1488-1509
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study addresses the lack of knowledge about inter-organizational activity coordination in the contemporary economy. Existing understanding of economic coordination within inter-organizational research is based on the three modes of organization, market, and cooperative relationship. We extend the framework of Richardson that analyses specialization and complementarity within the industrial division of labour in terms of these three coordination modes. We propose a novel mode of coordinating economic activity, namely multi-actor arrangements, which is based on the coordination of very dissimilar yet complementary activities, grounded in the principle of distributed control. This fourth mode is necessary to explain contemporary phenomena such as the circular economy and blockchain because these involve interdependencies that were previously framed as too different or unrelated to coordinate. The extension is important because it changes our understanding of mixed-mode coordination. Our proposed fourth mode enables the conceptualization of how activity interdependencies are coordinated within inter-organizational relationships and networks undergoing transformation.

  • Network strategising trajectories within a planned strategy process
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 24th Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) Conference. - Uppsala, Sweden. ; , s. 1-21
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well established in an IMP context that no business is an island (Håkansson and Snehota 1989). This paper discusses findings about how a team of strategists in a firm considers existing network connections within a strategy process for selecting a new strategy. The case company, Nortura, operates with a monopoly position that probably will be radically changed by a World Trade Association agreement. The case study underpinning the findings is based on qualitative data collected between June and December 2007, the seven-month time period of the strategising activity. The Actors-Resources-Activities (ARA) model is used as a tool to analyse how network connections are considered within each strategising phase by the different strategists that participate in the process. The paper highlights three overlapping network strategising trajectories within the process and discusses how teams of strategists handle network connections through the use of tools before proposing three types of network strategising.

  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 38:6, s. 662-670
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates how the effects of network connections are considered when strategists conduct a planned strategy process. The single case study underpinning the paper is based on qualitative data collected between June and December 2007, which relates to a seven-month strategising process conducted within a project group. The strategising activity was to consider how to develop the company's position by selecting one of several strategic options. The IMP Actors-Resources-Activities (ARA) model is used as a too] to analyse how the effects of network connections are considered within the process. The result is three overlapping network strategising trajectories' (actor, resource and activity). The dynamics of the trajectories is discussed using a matrix which illustrates how network effects are considered in terms of direct/indirect and isolated/relating. In sum, the paper contributes to the ongoing debates within IMP about strategy by bringing a dynamic process dimension to the study of network strategising. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. • Power Games in Networks : A Case of New Mercantilist Network Organizing
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: the 27th Annual IMP Conference. - Glasgow, Scotland.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates essential aspects of business networks in highly concentrated supplier and retail markets. In particular it discusses the interface between industrial supply network organization and end-consumer markets where a certain type of organization exists: the retail supermarket-organization. We argue that certain kinds of power dynamics emerge when retailers interact with producers in supply networks, which is pertinent due to the implications for the actual development of networked economies. This paper analyses this interplay in order to understand more of the mechanisms and the structures of the power games that impact business network dynamics. We identify three power games; the access to market game, the latitude game, and the price dumping game. We furthermore analyse the mechanisms and the transaction patterns that are implicit in these power games. Jointly, these indicate a development towards a neo-mercantilist economy where access to and participation in market supply may in fact be ―taxed‖ by powerful actors in certain network positions. These outcomes point at aspects of networked economies in highly concentrated economies that represent particular challenges to both market practitioners and policy makers

  • Segmenting a market in the making: industrial market segmentation as construction
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier. - 0019-8501. ; 39:5, s. 784-792
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper takes an empirical starting point in a claim that Biacore, a pioneering Swedish producer of affinity biosensors, was “in the enviable position of creating its own market” (Abelin, 1997). An in-depth case study traces how Biacore undertook segmentation activities while shaping the market for its new product technology, affinity biosensors. This involved stabilising the modes of exchange with customers, the product and the identity of the company. The efforts of Biacore highlight a constructive dimension of market segmentation that hitherto has received little attention. Rather than a process of describing, deciding and taking action, Biacore engaged in the gradual construction of market segments through an interactive and iterative process involving close collaboration with early users. Simultaneously, the market for the new technology gained shaped. Thus, the paper reports a ‘markets from networks’ story illustrating how the practice of segmenting a market may have consequences for that market.

  • The Development of a User Network as a Way to Re-launch an Unwanted Product
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Research Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-7333 .- 1873-7625. ; 37:1, s. 115-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A common situation in product development is that of product failure and the need for re-launch. This paper presents findings regarding how one firm successfully re-launched a product through the ex-post development of a user network. The producer, Biacore, had to re-launch its biosensor product or lose a €50 million investment. The firm identified and interacted with multiple potential lead-users in order to generate new use applications. The firm benefited from the successful development of a set of new applications, innovative users, and sales. As sales of the product increased, Biacore created marketing channels as diffusion mechanisms for the encouragement of direct and indirect user-to-user interaction. These were a way to spread the costs of user support when the firm standardised how it interacted with users. Some follower-users were able to benefit from lead-users who became lead teachers; other follower-users became non-users of the product. This paper illustrates three main roles for the firm in developing a user network: creating lead-users, organising directed applications development and facilitating user-to-user interaction.

  • Ingår i: Marketing Theory. - : SAGE Publications (UK and US). - 1741-301X .- 1470-5931. ; 16:4, s. 445-468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to elaborate conceptually on the user–market relationship. Existing research reports a limited user–market relationship, which simultaneously exaggerates and underplays user influence on markets. Assuming a constructivist market studies (CMS) perspective, we argue that the scope of the user–market relationship is broader than developing offers and uses. We conceptualize market shaping as five interrelated subprocesses in which users may be involved as agents: qualifying goods, fashioning modes of exchange, configuring actors, establishing market norms and generating market representations. The extent of user influence in these subprocesses is likely to vary both within a specific market and across markets. By identifying conditions conducive to user involvement in each subprocess, we lay the foundation for empirical research into how users shape markets. © 2016, © The Author(s) 2016.

  • The dynamics of networked power in a concentrated business network
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 67:12, s. 2579-2589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamics of networked power in a concentrated business network. Power is a long standing theme in inter-organizational research, yet there is a paucity of studies about how power emerges and is constructed over time at the network level. The paper adopts process, systems and network theory to interpret a rich single case study from the food industry. Three power mechanisms are identified, gatekeeping, decoupling and resource allocation, which form the basis of a model of networked power dynamics. Empirically tracing the dynamics of networked power highlights the economic contents of interactions. The paper extends current understandings of power as ‘conflict and coercion’ to include influencing, leveraging and strategic maneuvering in the actual performance of networked power.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 105, s. 48-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Value co-creation is a core focus area in both B2B marketing and strategy research, necessitating resource utilization within and across organizational boundaries. In the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) group, scholars have focused on the interactions among resources as one important way to analyze central questions about resources in business relationships and networks. This has produced a breadth of investigations and concepts that are locally defined and utilized. This may hamper further theoretical development and inhibit analytical precision. The purpose of this paper is to develop a more general shared understanding of resource interaction by identifying and explicating the key concepts used, and to assess its status as an approach. The paper synthesizes 20 years of research to identify key concepts and the relationships across concepts. This provides both a platform for further conceptual and empirical research within IMP and potential for crossfertilization with parallel B2B areas.

Around 90% of world trade is conducted through international shipping (International Chamber of Shipping, 2017), and vast quantities of goods thus travel across the seas. By way of illustration, there are more than 50,000 ships in the world’s merchant eets (Statista, 2018), and 3.8 billion tons of goods passed through EU ports in 2015 (Eurostat, 2017).
