  • Association between polarity of first episode and solar insolation in bipolar I disorder
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Psychosomatic Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-3999 .- 1879-1360. ; 160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Circadian rhythm disruption is commonly observed in bipolar disorder (BD). Daylight is the most powerful signal to entrain the human circadian clock system. This exploratory study investigated if solar insolation at the onset location was associated with the polarity of the first episode of BD I. Solar insolation is the amount of electromagnetic energy from the Sun striking a surface area of the Earth. Methods: Data from 7488 patients with BD I were collected at 75 sites in 42 countries. The first episode occurred at 591 onset locations in 67 countries at a wide range of latitudes in both hemispheres. Solar insolation values were obtained for every onset location, and the ratio of the minimum mean monthly insolation to the maximum mean monthly insolation was calculated. This ratio is largest near the equator (with little change in solar insolation over the year), and smallest near the poles (where winter insolation is very small compared to summer insolation). This ratio also applies to tropical locations which may have a cloudy wet and clear dry season, rather than winter and summer. Results: The larger the change in solar insolation throughout the year (smaller the ratio between the minimum monthly and maximum monthly values), the greater the likelihood the first episode polarity was depression. Other associated variables were being female and increasing percentage of gross domestic product spent on country health expenditures. (All coefficients: P ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: Increased awareness and research into circadian dysfunction throughout the course of BD is warranted.

  • Exploratory study of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation and age of onset of bipolar disorder
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Bipolar Disorders. - 2194-7511. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundSunlight contains ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation that triggers the production of vitamin D by skin. Vitamin D has widespread effects on brain function in both developing and adult brains. However, many people live at latitudes (about > 40 N or S) that do not receive enough UVB in winter to produce vitamin D. This exploratory study investigated the association between the age of onset of bipolar I disorder and the threshold for UVB sufficient for vitamin D production in a large global sample.MethodsData for 6972 patients with bipolar I disorder were obtained at 75 collection sites in 41 countries in both hemispheres. The best model to assess the relation between the threshold for UVB sufficient for vitamin D production and age of onset included 1 or more months below the threshold, family history of mood disorders, and birth cohort. All coefficients estimated at P <= 0.001.ResultsThe 6972 patients had an onset in 582 locations in 70 countries, with a mean age of onset of 25.6 years. Of the onset locations, 34.0% had at least 1 month below the threshold for UVB sufficient for vitamin D production. The age of onset at locations with 1 or more months of less than or equal to the threshold for UVB was 1.66 years younger.ConclusionUVB and vitamin D may have an important influence on the development of bipolar disorder. Study limitations included a lack of data on patient vitamin D levels, lifestyles, or supplement use. More study of the impacts of UVB and vitamin D in bipolar disorder is needed to evaluate this supposition.

  • Variations in seasonal solar insolation are associated with a history of suicide attempts in bipolar I disorder
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Bipolar Disorders. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2194-7511. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Bipolar disorder is associated with circadian disruption and a high risk of suicidal behavior. In a previous exploratory study of patients with bipolar I disorder, we found that a history of suicide attempts was associated with differences between winter and summer levels of solar insolation. The purpose of this study was to confirm this finding using international data from 42% more collection sites and 25% more countries. Methods Data analyzed were from 71 prior and new collection sites in 40 countries at a wide range of latitudes. The analysis included 4876 patients with bipolar I disorder, 45% more data than previously analyzed. Of the patients, 1496 (30.7%) had a history of suicide attempt. Solar insolation data, the amount of the sun's electromagnetic energy striking the surface of the earth, was obtained for each onset location (479 locations in 64 countries). Results This analysis confirmed the results of the exploratory study with the same best model and slightly better statistical significance. There was a significant inverse association between a history of suicide attempts and the ratio of mean winter insolation to mean summer insolation (mean winter insolation/mean summer insolation). This ratio is largest near the equator which has little change in solar insolation over the year, and smallest near the poles where the winter insolation is very small compared to the summer insolation. Other variables in the model associated with an increased risk of suicide attempts were a history of alcohol or substance abuse, female gender, and younger birth cohort. The winter/summer insolation ratio was also replaced with the ratio of minimum mean monthly insolation to the maximum mean monthly insolation to accommodate insolation patterns in the tropics, and nearly identical results were found. All estimated coefficients were significant at p < 0.01. Conclusion A large change in solar insolation, both between winter and summer and between the minimum and maximum monthly values, may increase the risk of suicide attempts in bipolar I disorder. With frequent circadian rhythm dysfunction and suicidal behavior in bipolar disorder, greater understanding of the optimal roles of daylight and electric lighting in circadian entrainment is needed.

  • Preventive medicine of von Hippel-Lindau disease-associated pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Endocrine-Related Cancer. - : BIOSCIENTIFICA LTD. - 1351-0088 .- 1479-6821. ; 25:9, s. 783-793
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) are rare in von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) but cause serious morbidity and mortality. Management guidelines for VHL-PanNETs continue to be based on limited evidence, and survival data to guide surgical management are lacking. We established the European-American-Asian-VHL-PanNET-Registry to assess data for risks for metastases, survival and long-term outcomes to provide best management recommendations. Of 2330 VHL patients, 273 had a total of 484 PanNETs. Median age at diagnosis of PanNET was 35 years (range 10-75). Fifty-five (20%) patients had metastatic PanNETs. Metastatic PanNETs were significantly larger (median size 5 vs 2 cm; P < 0.001) and tumor volume doubling time (TVDT) was faster (22 vs 126 months; P = 0.001). All metastatic tumors were >= 2.8 cm. Codons 161 and 167 were hotspots for VHL germline mutations with enhanced risk for metastatic PanNETs. Multivariate prediction modeling disclosed maximum tumor diameter and TVDT as significant predictors for metastatic disease (positive and negative predictive values of 51% and 100% for diameter cut-off >= 2.8 cm, 44% and 91% for TVDT cut-off of <= 24 months). In 117 of 273 patients, PanNETs > 1.5 cm in diameter were operated. Ten-year survival was significantly longer in operated vs non-operated patients, in particular for PanNETs < 2.8 cm vs >= 2.8 cm (94% vs 85% by 10 years; P = 0.020; 80% vs 50% at 10 years; P = 0.030). This study demonstrates that patients with PanNET approaching the cut-off diameter of 2.8 cm should be operated. Mutations in exon 3, especially of codons 161/167 are at enhanced risk for metastatic PanNETs. Survival is significantly longer in operated non-metastatic VHL-PanNETs.

  • Nonstandard Errors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF FINANCE. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0022-1082 .- 1540-6261. ; 79:3, s. 2339-2390
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data-generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty-nonstandard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for more reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer-review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants.

  • Liquid Ni-Fe penetration and recrystallisation in tungsten
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International journal of refractory metals & hard materials. - 0263-4368. ; 21:3-4, s. 159-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Melt penetration in grain boundaries of solid tungsten has been investigated. Solid tungsten rods have been exposed to a nickel-iron melt saturated with tungsten and the penetration depth and the shape of the liquid channels have been examined. The solid tungsten samples have been treated in different ways like cold working, annealing and recrystallisation, before melt exposure. Important parameters for the penetration process are stresses, surface tensions, solution and kinetic effects. A new theoretical model for the penetration mechanism in cold worked samples is proposed. Rapid recovery of the grains in the penetrated areas of the cold worked samples was observed. This is discussed, as well.

  • Replacement of a Tracheal Stenosis with a Tissue-Engineered Human Trachea Using Autologous Stem Cells: A Case Report
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Tissue Engineering. Part A. - 1937-3341 .- 1937-335X. ; 20:1-2, s. 389-397
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cell-based therapies, involving tissue engineering represent interesting and potentially important strategies for treatment of patients with various disorders. Here, using a detergent-enzymatic method we prepared an intact 3-dimensional scaffold of an extracellular matrix (ECM) derived from a human cadaver donor trachea, which we repopulated with autologous stem cells and implanted into a 76-year old patient with tracheal stenosis including lower part of the larynx. Although the graft provided the patient with an open airway, a week after surgery, the mucous membrane of the graft was covered by a 1-2mm thick fungal infection, which was treated with local and systemic anti-fungal therapy. The airway lumen was postoperatively controlled by fiberbrandoscopy and found stable and sufficient. However, twenty-three days later the patient died due to cardiac arrest but with a patent, open, stable tracheal transplant and intact anastomoses. Histopathological results of the transplanted tracheal graft at autopsy showed a squamous but not ciliated epithelium, neovascularization, bundles of -sma positive muscle cells, serous glands and nerve fibres with S-100 positive nerve cells in the submucosa and intact chondrocytes in the cartilage. Our findings suggest that although autologous stem cells- engineered tracheal matrices may represent a tool for clinical tracheal replacement. Further preclinical studies are required for generating functional airway grafts and long term effects of such grafts.

  • Characterization of the peritectic reaction in medium-alloy steel through microsegregation and heat-of-transformation studies
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1073-5623 .- 1543-1940. ; 35A:9, s. 2869-2879
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present work, the phenomenon of the peritectic reaction was characterized in a medium-ailoy steel. Several directional solidification and thermal-analysis experiments were done to investigate the reaction process. Directional solidification experiments carried out did not tend to show any direct evidence of a peritectic reaction. Microsegregation studies on the directionally solidified samples and those solidified under isothermal conditions bring out some interesting features. It has been documented that if the segregation ratio for Ni is higher than that for Cr, there is a correlation that the peritectic reaction had occurred in that region. On the other hand, a higher Cr segregation ratio as compared to Ni showed the possibility that the liquid had directly transformed to gamma-austenite without undergoing a peritectic reaction. Measurement of energies of transformations and the analysis of their values in different segments of the cooling-curve differential thermal analysis (DTA) experiments have helped in understanding the peritectic reaction. It is revealed that the transformation is more like diffusionless transformation, where gamma-austenite directly precipitates from delta-ferrite. Indeed, this proposition is also supported by the segregation patterns for Cr and Ni obtained in the solidified samples of this steel during directional solidification and DTA experiments and also by calculations to show the presence of enough lattice defects or vacancies to aid the aforementioned transformation.

  • Microstructure development and solute redistribution in aluminium alloys under low and moderate shear rates during rheo processing
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Materials Science & Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-5093 .- 1873-4936. ; 413, s. 156-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microstructural features and microsegregational behaviour of solute are studied in shear or stir-cast aluminium alloys under low and moderate shear rates. Alloys studied are Al-6.2% Cu, Al-7.3% Si and Al-13.2% Mg. In all the cases, microstructures of the primary pre-quench solid for stir-cast samples show rosette or ellipsoidal morphologies. Volume fractions of pre-quenched solid phase show significantly higher values for stir-cast alloys as compared to calculated. Microsegregation studies by microprobe analysis along the grains of the samples solidified under different treatment conditions show that stir casting changes the segregation pattern significantly. Except for Al-13.2% Mg alloys lower values than those calculated by Scheil's microsegregation equation are observed for other systems. A model for microstructure evolution during stir casting is presented. The microsegregation patterns have been discussed in terms of interaction between the diffusing solute and the vacancies migrating from solid into liquid.

  • Comparison of numerical simulation models for predicting temperature in solidification analysis with reference to air gap formation
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cast Metals Research. - : Maney Publishing. - 1364-0461 .- 1743-1336. ; 17:5, s. 295-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a result of its influence on heat transfer between cast part and mould, air gap formation is an important problem for many casting processes. The general explanation for gap formation is that, as a result of stresses and distortions that are created from inhomogeneous cooling, shrinkage of the casting and expansion of the mould occur. In this paper, different thermomechanical approaches are applied to a well defined casting process using three commercial and one in-house codes and their predictions are compared with experimental findings. The experimental data were obtained from the solidification and subsequent cooling of cylindrical castings of eutectic Al-13% Si and ternary Al-7% Si-0.3% Mg alloys. Based on these findings, the major differences between the predictions of the models and the actual formation of the air gap are discussed.

  • Patient satisfaction after gut-directed hypnotherapy in irritable bowel syndrome.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Neurogastroenterology and motility : the official journal of the European Gastrointestinal Motility Society. - : Wiley. - 1365-2982 .- 1350-1925. ; 25:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Gut-directed hypnotherapy is an effective treatment option for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, clinical observations suggest that patient satisfaction with hypnotherapy is not always associated with improvement in IBS symptoms. Methods We evaluated 83 patients with IBS treated with gut-directed hypnotherapy (1hweek(-1) , 12weeks). After the treatment period, patients reported their satisfaction with the treatment (ranging from 1=not at all satisfied, to 5=very satisfied) and completed questionnaires to assess IBS symptom severity, quality of life, cognitive function, sense of coherence, depression, and anxiety before and after treatment. Key Results After hypnotherapy improved IBS symptom severity, quality of life, cognitive function, and anxiety were seen. Thirty patients (36%) were very satisfied with the treatment and 57 (69%) patients scored 4 or 5 on the patient satisfaction scale. Patient satisfaction was associated with less severe IBS symptoms and better quality of life after the treatment. In a multiple linear regression analysis, only the quality of life domain sexual relations was independently associated with patient satisfaction after hypnotherapy, explaining 22% of the variance. Using 25% reduction of IBS symptom severity to define an IBS symptom responder, 52% of the responders were very satisfied with hypnotherapy, but this was also true for 31% in the non-responder group. Conclusions & Inferences Patient satisfaction with gut-directed hypnotherapy in IBS is associated with improvement of quality of life and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. However, other factors unrelated to GI symptoms also seems to be of importance for patient satisfaction, as a substantial proportion of patients without GI symptom improvement were also very satisfied with this treatment option.

  • Transplantation of an allogeneic vein bioengineered with autologous stem cells: a proof-of-concept study.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Lancet. - 1474-547X. ; 380:9838, s. 230-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Extrahepatic portal vein obstruction can have severe health consequences. Variceal bleeding associated with this disorder causes upper gastrointestinal bleeding, leading to substantial morbidity and mortality. We report the clinical transplantation of a deceased donor iliac vein graft repopulated with recipient autologous stem cells in a patient with extrahepatic portal vein obstruction. METHODS: A 10 year old girl with extrahepatic portal vein obstruction was admitted to the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, for a bypass procedure between the superior mesenteric vein and the intrahepatic left portal vein (meso Rex bypass). A 9 cm segment of allogeneic donor iliac vein was decellularised and subsequently recellularised with endothelial and smooth muscle cells differentiated from stem cells obtained from the bone marrow of the recipient. This graft was used because the patient's umbilical vein was not suitable and other strategies (eg, liver transplantation) require lifelong immunosuppression. FINDINGS: The graft immediately provided the recipient with a functional blood supply (25-30 cm/s in the portal vein and 40 mL/s in the artery was measured intraoperatively and confirmed with ultrasound). The patient had normal laboratory values for 9 months. However, at 1 year the blood flow was low and, on exploration, the shunt was patent but too narrow due to mechanical obstruction of tissue in the mesocolon. Once the tissue causing the compression was removed the graft dilated. We therefore used a second stem-cell populated vein graft to lengthen the previous graft. After this second operation, the portal pressure was reduced from 20 mm Hg to 13 mm Hg and blood flow was 25-40 cm/s in the portal vein. With restored portal circulation the patient has substantially improved physical and mental function and growth. The patient has no anti-endothelial cell antibodies and is receiving no immunosuppressive drugs. INTERPRETATION: An acellularised deceased donor vein graft recellularised with autologous stem cells can be considered for patients in need of vascular vein shunts without the need for immunosuppression. • UV-Light-Induced Fluctuation Enhanced Sensing by WO3-Based Gas Sensors
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Sensors Journal. - 1530-437X .- 1558-1748. ; 16:13, s. 5152-5159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • WO3-based gas sensors were investigated under UV-light irradiation and at different working temperatures with the object of achieving superior sensitivity and selectivity. Resistance fluctuations in the WO3 layer were studied together with dc resistance measurements. The data were taken in synthetic air, ethanol, nitrogen dioxide, and mixtures of these gases. We conclude that UV irradiation can easily be applied to enhance the gas sensing properties of a WO3 layer.
