  • Inclusive V-0 production cross sections from 920 GeV fixed target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 29:2, s. 181-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

  • Measurement of the b(b)over-bar production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 26:3, s. 345-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

  • Aberrant mitochondrial iron distribution and maturation arrest characterize early erythroid precursors in low-risk myelodysplastic syndromes
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 1528-0020 .- 0006-4971. ; 106:1, s. 247-253
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early erythroblasts from patients with refractory anemia (RA) and RA with ringed sideroblasts (RARS) show constitutive mitochondrial release of cytochrome c. Moreover, mature erythroblasts in RARS, but not in RA, display aberrant accumulation of mitochondrial ferritin (MtF). We analyzed cytochrome c release, MtF expression, and gene expression during erythrold differentiation in bone marrow cells from myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients and healthy controls. Whereas none or few cultured erythrold cells from healthy individuals and RA patients expressed MtF, those from RARS patients showed MtF expression at an early stage, when cells were CD34(+) and without morphologic signs of erythroid differentiation. The proportion of RARS erythroblasts that were MtF(+) increased further upon in vitro maturation. Moreover, a significant overexpression of mRNA encoding cytochrome c, and proapoptotic Bid and Bax, was seen in freshly isolated cells from MDS patients. Genes involved in erythroid differentiation were also dysregulated in MDS cells. Importantly, GATA-1 expression increased during normal erythroid maturation, but remained low in MDS cultures, indicating a block of erythroid maturation at the transcriptional level. In conclusion, aberrant MtF expression in RARS erythroblasts occurs at a very early stage of erythrold differentiation and is paralleled by an up-regulation of genes involved in this process.

  • Novel printed nanostructured gas sensors
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Procedia Engineering. - : Elsevier. - 1877-7058. ; 25, s. 896-899
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a need for low-cost mass-production circuits on various substrates, possibly performing some simple functions as switches, antennas, displays, and sensors. Also in the field of gas sensors widely used in several applications there is a need for such novel fabrication technologies and materials. In this paper, we present three gas sensor structures fabricated using novel printing techniques. Inkjet and gravure printing techniques were used for fabrication of resistive WO3 nanoparticle gas sensors for detection of NO, and inkjet printing was utilized for fabrication of solid electrolyte (mixture of H3PW12O40 and PVC) in a nanostructured Metal-Electrolyte-Insulator- Semiconductor (MEIS) transistor for detection of H2. The sensor structures were found to be sensitive for detection of NO below 10 ppm, and H2 below 100 ppm concentrations in synthetic air, respectively.

  • Fluorescence in situ hybridization for the study of cell lineage involvement in myelodysplastic syndromes with chromosome 5 anomalies
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Cancer Genetics and Cytogenetics. - 0165-4608. ; 136:2, s. 101-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with a locus-specific dual DNA probe (LSI EGR-1SO/D5S23SG) for chromosome 5 was used in combination with morphology to study bone marrow cell lineage involvement of the abnormal chromosomal clone in 13 patients with deletion 5q[del(5q)], either as a sole aberration or as part of a complex karyotype, and in six cases with monosomy 5 by metaphase cytogenetics, all with complex karyotypes including 2-6 marker chromosomes. In the monosomy 5 group, only one case displayed the expected one orange and one green (1O + 1G) FISH pattern in a majority of the cells. The other five patients instead showed 1O + 2G FISH signals in 17-86% of the bone marrow cells, which is the typical pattern for del(5q). In the del(5q) group, 26-98% of the bone marrow cells exhibited 10 + 2G FISH signals. All patients showed clonal involvement of the myeloid cell lineages, including the megakaryocytes in a few cases, whereas lymphoid cells generally exhibited the normal 20 + 2G FISH pattern. No difference was seen between patients with 5q- syndrome, those with del(5q) and a complex karyotype, and the monosomy 5 group. We were thus unable to confirm the recent suggestion that B-cells are a part of the abnormal clone in MDS with del(5q). Furthermore, true monosomy 5 seems to be rare in MDS. • Carrying out a multi-model integrated assessment of European energy transition pathways : Challenges and benefits
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0360-5442 .- 1873-6785. ; 258, s. 124329-124329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the publication of the European Green Deal, the European Union has committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. The envisaged reductions of direct greenhouse gases emissions are seen as technically feasible, but if a wrong path is pursued, significant unintended impacts across borders, sectors, societies and ecosystems may follow. Without the insights gained from an impact assessment framework reaching beyond the techno-economic perspective, the pursuit of direct emission reductions may lead to counterproductive outcomes in the long run. We discuss the opportunities and challenges related to the creation and use of an integrated assessment framework built to inform the European Commission on the path to decarbonisation. The framework is peculiar in that it goes beyond existing ones in its scope, depth and cross-scale coverage, by use of numerous specialised models and case studies. We find challenges of consistency that can be overcome by linking modelling tools iteratively in some cases, harmonising modelling assumptions in others, comparing model outputs in others. We find the highest added value of the framework in additional insights it provides on the technical feasibility of decarbonisation pathways, on vulnerability aspects and on unintended environmental and health impacts on national and sub-national scale.

  • Classical morphology, esterase cytochemistry, and interphase cytogenetics of peripheral blood and bone marrow smears
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: The journal of histochemistry and cytochemistry : official journal of the Histochemistry Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 0022-1554. ; 44:11, s. 1303-1309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We used peripheral blood (PB) and bone marrow (BM) smears in the development of two methods based on cytomorphology and esterase cytochemistry in combination with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The first method involves photodocumentation of May-Grünewald-Giemsa (MGG)-stained cells, followed by destaining in methanol-acetic acid, fixation in paraformaldehyde, and digestion with protease and RNAse before FISH using alpha-satellite probes that specify chromosomes X, 7, 8, and 17. On average, two hybridization signals were seen in 94.5% of disomic BM cells. The hybridization sensitivity was found to vary, however, both among morphologically defined hematopoietic cell lineages and among differentation levels within a lineage. In the second method, an esterase staining technique was followed by the same treatment as for MGG-stained cells. The esterases and FISH signals could be simultaneously visualized and the method was found suitable for rapid screening of in situ signals in cytochemically defined granulocytes and lymphocytes but not in monocytes. The combined methods proved very useful in elucidating the clinical significance of chromosomal abnormalities seen in two cases of leukemia.
