  • lntegrated Optical Fiber Sensors in Additive Manufactured Metal Components for Smart Manufacturing Applications
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Smart Systems Integration; 13th International Conference and Exhibition on Integration Issues of Miniaturized Systems.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work combines fiber optic sensors with additive manufacturing to enable integration of temperature and strain sensors in metal components. In this paper, we present a fiber optic sensor network integrated in press hardening tools to monitor the contact between the tool and the metal sheet during forming operation. The tools are manufactured through metal powder bed fusion using laser melting processes (PBF-SLM), after which the tools are prepared for sensor integration. A demonstrator press hardening tool with integrated fiber optic sensors was heated using an electric heat foil and the sensor measurements was compared to a thermal simulation model. The sensor technology is based on Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), integrated at several positions along the optical fiber. FBGs are in-fiber sensors that are multiplexed. lt is possible to place hundreds of FBG sensors along one single fiber, thus allowing for quasidistributed sensing of temperature or strain. The optical fiber itself can be less than 100 micrometer in diameter, allowing for sensing at several points in a minimally invasive way, when integrated in a tool or component.

  • Neoliberalization of housing in Sweden : gentrification, filtering, and social polarization
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Annals of the Association of American Geographers. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0004-5608 .- 1467-8306. ; 102:2, s. 443-463
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last twenty-five years, housing policy in Sweden has radically changed. Once forming a pillar of the comprehensive welfare system, abbreviated the “Swedish model,” neoliberal housing politics have established market-governed housing provision with a minimum of state engagement. This shift has had consequences on the social geography of housing conditions. The research reported here analyzes social geographic change in Sweden's three largest cities—Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö—between 1986 and 2001, relating observed patterns of gentrification and filtering to cycles of accumulation and to neoliberalization of housing policies. First, we outline the neoliberalization of Swedish housing policies. We then present an empirical analysis of gentrification and filtering in the three cities, spanning two boom periods (1986–1991, 1996–2001) and a bust period (1991–1996). The data reveal social geographic polarization manifested in the growth of supergentrification and low-income filtering. The analysis also introduces the concept of ordinary gentrification, supporting the move in gentrification research toward a broad generic conception of the process. Political reforms after 2001 are summarized and we argue that these underlie the continued increase in inequality and that the social geographic polarization mapped between 1986 and 2001 has probably intensified during this decade.

  • Membrane Insertion of Marginally Hydrophobic Transmembrane Helices Depends on Sequence Context
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-2836 .- 1089-8638. ; 396:1, s. 221-229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In mammalian cells, most integral membrane proteins are initially inserted into the endoplasmic reticulum membrane by the so-called Sec61 translocon. However, recent predictions suggest that many transmembrane helices (TMHs) in multispanning membrane proteins are not sufficiently hydrophobic to be recognized as such by the translocon. In this study, we have screened 16 marginally hydrophobic TMHs from membrane proteins of known three-dimensional structure. Indeed, most of these TMHs do not insert efficiently into the endoplasmic reticulum membrane by themselves. To test if loops or TMHs immediately upstream or downstream of a marginally hydrophobic helix might influence the insertion efficiency, insertion of marginally hydrophobic helices was also studied in the presence of their neighboring loops and helices. The results show that flanking loops and nearest-neighbor TMHs are sufficient to ensure the insertion of many marginally hydrophobic helices. However, for at least two of the marginally hydrophobic helices, the local interactions are not enough, indicating that post-insertional rearrangements are involved in the folding of these proteins.

  • 3D reflection seismic imaging at the 2.5 km deep COSC-1 scientific borehole, central Scandinavian Caledonides
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Tectonophysics. - : Elsevier. - 0040-1951 .- 1879-3266. ; 689, s. 40-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 2.5 km deep scientific COSC-1 borehole (ICDP 5054-1-A) was successfully drilled with nearly complete core recovery during spring and summer of 2014. Downhole and on-core measurements through the targeted Lower Seve Nappe provide a comprehensive data set. An observed gradual increase in strain below 1700 m, with mica schists and intermittent mylonites increasing in frequency and thickness, is here interpreted as the basal thrust zone of the Lower Seve Nappe. This high strain zone was not fully penetrated at the total drilled depth and is thus greater than 800 m in thickness. To allow extrapolation of the results from downhole logging, core analysis and other experiments into the surrounding rock and to link these with the regional tectonic setting and evolution, three post-drilling high-resolution seismic experiments were conducted in and around the borehole. One of these, the first 3D seismic reflection land survey to target the nappe structures of the Scandinavian Caledonides, is presented here. It provides new information on the 3D geometry of structures both within the drilled Lower Seve Nappe and underlying rocks down to at least 9 km.The observed reflectivity correlates well with results from the core analysis and downhole logging, despite challenges in processing. Reflections from the uppermost part of the Lower Seve Nappe have limited lateral extent and varying dips, possibly related to mafic lenses or boudins of variable character within felsic rock. Reflections occurring within the high strain zone, however, are laterally continuous over distances of a kilometer or more and dip 10–15° towards the southeast. Reflections from structures beneath the high strain unit and the COSC-1 borehole can be followed through most of the seismic volume down to at least 9 km and have dips of varying degree, mainly in the east–west thrust direction of the orogen.

  • Hypertension management in primary health care : a survey in eight regions of Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0281-3432 .- 1502-7724. ; 41:3, s. 343-350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To explore hypertension management in primary healthcare (PHC).Design: Structured interviews of randomly selected PHC centres (PHCCs) from December 2019 to January 2021.Setting: Seventy-six PHCCs in eight regions of Sweden.Main outcome measures: Staffing and organization of hypertension care. Methods of measuring blood pressure (BP), laboratory tests, registration of co-morbidities and lifestyle advice at diagnosis and follow-up.Results: The management of hypertension varied among PHCCs. At diagnosis, most PHCCs (75%) used the sitting position at measurements, and only 13% routinely measured standing BP. One in three (33%) PHCCs never used home BP measurements and 25% only used manual measurements. The frequencies of laboratory analyses at diagnosis were similar in the PHCCs. At follow-up, fewer analyses were performed and the tests of lipids and microalbuminuria decreased from 95% to 45% (p < 0.001) and 61% to 43% (p = 0.001), respectively. Only one out of 76 PHCCs did not measure kidney function at routine follow-ups. Lifestyle, physical activity, food habits, smoking and alcohol use were assessed in & GE;96% of patients at diagnosis. At follow-up, however, there were fewer assessments. Half of the PHCCs reported dedicated teams for hypertension, 82% of which were managed by nurses. There was a great inequality in the number of patients per tenured GP in the PHCCs (median 2500; range 1300-11300) patients. Conclusions: The management of hypertension varies in many respects between PHCCs in Sweden. This might lead to inequity in the care of patients with hypertension.

  • Compensation for Non-normal Ejection of Large Molecular Ions in Plasma Desorption Mass Spectrometry
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry. - : Wiley. - 0951-4198 .- 1097-0231. ; 3:6, s. 190-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By introducing an Einzel lens in the field-free region of a straight time-of-flight mass spectrometer, secondary ions of large mass can be detected more efficiently in plasma-desorption mass spectrometry. This procedure compensates for the large radial velocities of large molecular ions recently observed experimentally. It is shown that large molecular ions like those of lysozyme can now be detected more efficiently, and larger molecular ions than observed before in plasma-desorption mass spectrometry (like those of bovine ovalbumin, mol. wt 45 000) can now be studied.

  • Repositioning of transmembrane alpha-helices during membrane protein folding
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-2836 .- 1089-8638. ; 397:1, s. 190-201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have determined the optimal placement of individual transmembrane helices in the Pyrococcus horikoshii Glt(Ph) glutamate transporter homolog in the membrane. The results are in close agreement with theoretical predictions based on hydrophobicity, but do not, in general, match the known three-dimensional structure, suggesting that transmembrane helices can be repositioned relative to the membrane during folding and oligomerization. Theoretical analysis of a database of membrane protein structures provides additional support for this idea. These observations raise new challenges for the structure prediction of membrane proteins and suggest that the classical two-stage model often used to describe membrane protein folding needs to be modified.

  • Silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO)-Templated Activated Carbons
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ACS Omega. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2470-1343. ; 4:6, s. 9889-9895
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microporous activated carbon was prepared by depositing and pyrolyzing propylene within the microporous voids of SAPO-37 and subsequently removing the template by a treatment with HCl and NaOH. The carbon had a high surface area and large micropore and ultramicropore volumes. The yield, crystallinity, morphology, and adsorption properties compared well with those of a structurally related zeolite-Y-templated carbon. No HF was needed to remove the SAPO-37 template in contrast to the zeolite Y template, which could be of industrial importance.

  • Intracavity interrogation of an array of fiber Bragg gratings
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : OSA - The Optical Society. - 1094-4087. ; 29:1, s. 111-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, we explore the interrogation of an array of fiber Bragg gratings as part of a laser cavity. A semiconductor optical amplifier in a sigma-shaped fiber cavity provides gain and is gated periodically at a rate that matches the roundtrip time associated with each grating of the array. The interrogator exhibits clear laser properties such as a threshold and linewidth narrowing. Besides improving the signal-to-noise ratio and enabling the re-use of wavelengths, it is found that this interrogation scheme enables monitoring of weak gratings spaced by less than 1 cm. Intracavity grating interrogation studied here is found to be a simple and powerful way to increase the number of sensor points for industrial applications.

  • Tissue-specific transcriptional imprinting and heterogeneity in human innate lymphoid cells revealed by full-length single-cell RNA-sequencing
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cell Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1748-7838 .- 1001-0602. ; 31:5, s. 554-568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of the microenvironment on innate lymphoid cell (ILC)-mediated immunity in humans remains largely unknown. Here we used full-length Smart-seq2 single-cell RNA-sequencing to unravel tissue-specific transcriptional profiles and heterogeneity of CD127+ ILCs across four human tissues. Correlation analysis identified gene modules characterizing the migratory properties of tonsil and blood ILCs, and signatures of tissue-residency, activation and modified metabolism in colon and lung ILCs. Trajectory analysis revealed potential differentiation pathways from circulating and tissue-resident naïve ILCs to a spectrum of mature ILC subsets. In the lung we identified both CRTH2+ and CRTH2− ILC2 with lung-specific signatures, which could be recapitulated by alarmin-exposure of circulating ILC2. Finally, we describe unique TCR-V(D)J-rearrangement patterns of blood ILC1-like cells, revealing a subset of potentially immature ILCs with TCR-δ rearrangement. Our study provides a useful resource for in-depth understanding of ILC-mediated immunity in humans, with implications for disease.

  • Genetic variants of TNFSF4 and risk for carotid artery disease and stroke
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Medicine. - New York : Springer. - 0946-2716 .- 1432-1440. ; 87:4, s. 337-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In two independent human cohorts, the minor allele of SNP rs3850641 in TNFSF4 was significantly more frequent in individuals with myocardial infarction than in controls. In mice, Tnfsf4 expression is associated with increased atherosclerosis. The expression of TNFSF4 in human atherosclerosis and the association between genotype and cerebrovascular disease have not yet been investigated. TNFSF4 messenger RNA (mRNA) levels were significantly higher in human atherosclerotic lesions compared with controls (730∈±∈30 vs 330∈±∈65 arbitrary units, p∈<∈0.01). TNFSF4 was mainly expressed by macrophages in atherosclerotic lesions. In cell culture, endothelial cells upregulated TNFSF4 in response to tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α; 460∈±∈110 vs 133∈±∈8 arbitrary units, p∈<∈0.001 after 6 h of stimulation). We analyzed the TNFSF4 gene in 239 patients who had undergone carotid endarterectomy and 138 matching controls from The Biobank of Karolinska Carotid Endarterectomies and Stockholm Heart Epidemiology Program cohorts and 929 patients and 1,382 matching controls from the Sahlgrenska Academy Study on Ischemic Stroke and Case Control Study of Stroke cohorts, limiting inclusion to patients with ischemic stroke. Participants were genotyped for the rs3850641 SNP in TNFSF4. Genotype associations were neither found with TNFSF4 mRNA levels nor with atherosclerosis associated systemic factors or risk for stroke. This study shows that TNFSF4 is expressed on antigen-presenting cells in human carotid atherosclerotic lesions but provides no evidence for an association of TNFSF4 gene variation with the risk for ischemic stroke.

  • Principles of designing hazardous landfills : the Lithuanian LLW case
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Earth Sciences and Geotechnical Engineering. - : Scienpress Ltd. - 1792-9040 .- 1792-9660. ; 3:3, s. 147-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A candidate concept for a Lithuanian repository for low-level radioactive waste (LLW) implies location above the groundwater level and placement of the waste in concrete vaults surrounded by smectitic clay of appreciable thickness as all-around embedment for retarding wetting and minimizing exposure of the waste packages to oxygen. For rational and cost-saving reasons the clay material is not processed, only stockpiled for desiccation to a suitable water content before placement and compaction. The clay is laterally confined by sandy fill and covered by erosion-resisting soil. The vaults rest on stable, elevated ground for minimizing subsidence and maintaining dry conditions. The time for water saturation of the clay is more than the required 300-500 years of isolation of the waste, which keeps the waste packages dry in this period. The paper describes the principles of design of the repository and its predicted performance of which creep strain of the clay is of particular importance.

  • Assemblies of Colloidal Hydrochar Nanoparticles and their Derived Activated Carbons for CO2 Sorption
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Carbon-rich colloids are of great fundamental and technological interest and in this thesis, I tested a range of hypotheses and studied aspects of small hydrochar-based colloids and their colloidal and material chemistry. Crude hydrochar dispersions were synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization of glucose and purified by dialysis. After the purification, stable and monodisperse dispersions of colloidal hydrochar particles in water were obtained. Evaporation of water from the colloidal hydrochar dispersion led to that the hydrochar particles deposited into repeated strip patterns on glass substrates, or underwent directed assembly into macroscopic rods or yarn-shaped objects at the glass-water-air interface. In one study, we studied the strip patterns that comprised dense assemblies of hydrochar particles formed through directed assembly on the substrates during evaporation of water as a function of the sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) addition, pH of the dispersion, geometry of the substrates, and concentration of the colloidal particle. The mechanisms were presented. In the published paper included in the thesis, the formation of the macroscopically large and assembled rods was studied during evaporation of water from the colloidal hydrochar dispersions. This assembly was studied along with the electrostatic stability of the dispersions at various pH and ion strengths and the redispersability of the assembled rods into the constituting colloidal particles. For matters of applications of the rod assemblies, pyrolysis and templating silicon carbide -tricopper silicide ((SiC-Cu3Si) by reactive infiltration with a copper silicon alloy by reaction infiltration were introduced. In two manuscripts, aspects of the dispersions of hydrochar particles were studied with means of KHCO3 activation into activated carbons (ACs). In one study, hydrochar particles were activated, and then the ACs were dispersed in a solvent after physical grinding. The morphology, porosity, and CO2 sorption properties, etc. of the activated carbons prepared by chemical activation were studied for freeze-dried hydrochar particles and the long bent yarn assemblies pretreated under different conditions. ACs of electrospun nanofibers of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and colloidal hydrochar were oxidized and chemically activated with KHCO3 or K2CO3 and studied for the adsorption of CO2.

  • Macroscopic rods from assembled colloidal particles of hydrothermally carbonized glucose and their use as templates for silicon carbide and tricopper silicide
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-9797 .- 1095-7103. ; 602, s. 480-489
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-aggregated colloids can be used for the preparation of materials, and we studied long rod-like aggregates formed on the evaporation of water from dispersed particles of colloidal hydrochar. The monodispersed hydrochar particles (100–200 nm) were synthesized by the hydrothermal carbonization ofglucose and purified through dialysis. During the synthesis they formed colloidal dispersions which wereelectrostatically stable at intermediate to high pH and at low ion strengths. On the evaporation of water, macroscopically large rods formed from the dispersions at intermediate pH conditions. The rods formedat the solid-water interface orthogonally oriented with respect to the drying direction. Pyrolysis renderedthe rods highly porous without qualitatively affecting their shape. A Cu-Si alloy was reactively infiltratedinto the in-situ pyrolyzed hydrochars and composites of tricopper silicide (Cu3Si)-silicon carbide(SiC)/carbon formed. During this process, the Si atoms reacted with the C atoms, which in turned causedthe alloy to wet and further react with the carbon. The shape of the underlying carbon template wasmaintained during the reactions, and the formed composite preparation was subsequently calcined intoa Cu3Si-SiC-based replica of the rod-like assemblies of carbon-based colloidal particles. Transmission andscanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to study the shape, composition, andstructure of the formed solids. Further studies of materials prepared with reactive infiltration of alloysinto self-aggregated and carbon-based solids can be justified from a perspective of colloidal science, aswell as the explorative use of hydrochar prepared from real biomass, exploration of the compositionalspace in relation to the reactive infiltration, and applications of the materials in catalysis.
