  • Resource interaction and resource integration: Similarities, differences, reflections
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 91, s. 385-396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to provide a state-of-the-art comparison of the conceptualization of resources in ‘Resource Interaction’ (IMP) and ‘Resource Integration’ (SDL). Both are engaged with understanding how value is (co)-created, but with different emphases. Existing comparisons are limited and out of date. We trace how each has evolved over time by analyzing key developments. The focus of SDL has shifted from operant resources towards resource integration, and from a dyadic view towards ecosystem contexts. Within IMP, research takes a network perspective in investigating the nature of resource interaction in a variety of empirical contexts. An analysis of similarities and differences highlights key assumptions, the classification of resources, and the role for the actor. The comparison offers a thorough understanding of Resource Interaction and Resource Integration. The paper concludes by proposing suggestions for further research for Resource Interaction.

  • Analysing an activity in context: A case study of the conditions for vehicle maintenance
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501. ; 58, s. 69-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The IMP approach is concerned with analysis of complex industrial networks. How to design case studies relying on these theoretical assumptions poses a challenge. In this paper we address this challenge by discussing a case study, focusing on the conditions for maintenance of heavy vehicles. The aim of the paper is to suggest an approach for analysis of embedded activities in industrial networks. The case study takes its starting point in the perspective of an actor considering how to develop vehicle maintenance services for its customers and points at the need to enable understanding of the conditions for vehicle maintenance, which necessitates identification and analysis of the variety across transport service settings. • Conceptualising Solutions in Business Networks: The Case of Heavy Vehicle Maintenance
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis problematises and conceptualises the phenomenon of solutions in business networks based on processual approaches to solutions and the Industrial Network Approach to business markets. In particular, the thesis focuses on the interorganisational and interactive aspects involved in solutions embedded in business networks. Driven by demands for more sustainable transport, lower transport costs and changes of the roles and business models within the transport industry, actors strive to improve the efficiency of transport systems. Vehicle maintenance, as an enabler for uptime and robustness of transport, has therefore drawn attention. Managers strive to elucidate whether alternative approaches and designs can result in new vehicle maintenance solutions to boost the efficiency of firms, vehicle utilisation and transport. Supporting this quest, this thesis aims to extend current understandings concerning solutions in business networks based on a single case study encompassing a selection of firms involved in road transport in Sweden. The case study focuses on maintenance solutions for heavy vehicles. In order to situate those solutions within the setting of road transport, empirical data concerning firms and other, related, solutions in the broader context of heavy vehicle maintenance has been collected. The case analysis shows that solutions rely on combining and adapting resources. Beyond that, however, the results of the thesis stress that solutions also depend on the linking and adjustment of activities and the involvement of actors; it is through the interaction among actors that firms jointly organise the activities and resources required for solutions. Based on the conceptual model developed, the thesis highlights the temporal and spatial aspects of solutions embedded in business networks and points to interdependencies among the activities and resources involved. The thesis also underscores how the interdependencies among solutions in business networks can result in that a change to one solution could have ramifications for the perceived efficiency, effectiveness and value of other solutions. Finally, the thesis highlights the importance of actors to transcend a product-centric or customer-centric logic and suggests an interaction-centric approach to solutions that acknowledges the interconnected and interdependent characteristics of solutions in business networks.

  • Heavy Vehicle Maintenance in an Industrial Network Perspective: Implications of Embeddedness and Interdependencies
  • 2016
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Road transport solutions are often complex and involve numerous stakeholders. To secure that goods arrive in a timely and efficient manner, companies must cooperate and interact to define, implement and operate the transport solutions required. To support efficiency, reliability and robustness of the transport solutions, the trucks involved must be operational, and to achieve this, vehicle maintenance is imperative. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of heavy vehicle maintenance from an interorganizational perspective. The phenomenon in focus is the use and performance of heavy vehicle maintenance and the research underlying this thesis applies a holistic approach. As a result of this approach, the networks studied include Transport Buyers and Transport Providers (hauliers) together with other actors concerned by or influencing the focal phenomenon. The Industrial Network Approach (INA) has been applied as a starting point for the analytical framework of the thesis. In specific, the network model representing activities, resources and actors as three interdependent dimensions (the ARA model), is used for analysis of the maintenance activities.Three cases involving Transport Buyers heavily dependent on freight transport form the empirical base of this qualitative case study. Data was collected using semi structured interviews and analysed using the ARA model. Specifically, maintenance activities are analysed with respect to interdependencies between activities, resources and actors embedded in the network. The three cases demonstrate how demands on, and implications for, vehicle maintenance is conditioned by the characteristics of the context in which the haulier operates. Specifically, the embeddedness of the vehicle maintenance activity, and interdependencies involving the haulier and the workshop, strongly influence the conditions for vehicle maintenance. In addition, as the notion of efficiency of vehicle maintenance activities differs between stakeholders, a main conclusion is that an approach building on a holistic network-based perspective must be applied when improving overall efficiency of vehicle maintenance.

  • Outsourcing of heavy vehicle maintenance: the implications of embeddedness
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IMP Asia Conference 2018.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper (in work) is to explore the outsourcing of heavy vehicle maintenance from an interorganizational perspective. Specifically, the paper aims to identify and analyze some of the implications resulting from the embeddedness of the maintenance solution, its provider and its buyer, and, how these implications influence a hauler’s decision of make-or-buy. The paper draws on the results from an on-going case study focusing the marketing and purchasing of solutions in a business network context. The empirical data regards firms concerned by maintenance of vehicles in a road freight transport setting. While literature on outsourcing tend to focus on the supplier, the buyer, or the supplier-buyer dyad, the implications of this paper point to the need for applying an interorganizational perspective when outsourcing vehicle maintenance. The supplier-buyer dyad, as well as the maintenance solution in itself, is embedded in a wider network of firms. The maintenance solution therefore influences, and is influenced by, firms and activities in the wider network. Moreover, reflecting the heterogeneous needs of stakeholders of the business network, the value of the solution will be differently perceived by different stakeholders. Hence, for suppliers and buyers striving for improving value, effectiveness and efficiency of the maintenance solutions an aggregated view of the needs is crucial.

  • Solutions in business networks : Implications of an interorganizational perspective
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 104, s. 411-421
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on the combination of an interorganizational perspective and a processual view of solutions, this paper analyzes the provisioning of solutions in business networks. Drawing on a case study in a transportation industry setting, the interdependencies between solutions are uncovered. The case illustrates how 1) firms are simultaneously involved in the provisioning of multiple solutions, 2) firms take on multiple roles in the provisioning of solutions in the business network, and 3) solutions are subject to interdependencies via connected relationships and thus form “networks of solutions.” The paper concludes that interdependence among solutions is a significant characteristic, adding to previous research on solutions. Consequently, it is suggested that firms' interaction with various parties in the provisioning of solutions needs considerable managerial and theoretical attention.

  • Variety in freight transport service procurement approaches
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research Procedia. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-1465 .- 2352-1457. ; 25, s. 806-823
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Freight transport is featured by complexity owing to interdependences within supply networks. The aim of this paper is to explore the variety in freight transport service procurement approaches and how these impact on vehicle utilization. The paper relies empirically on a case study featuring different conditions for, and approaches to, transport services from the perspectives of buyers and suppliers of transport services. Three particular dimensions are identified; (1) the nature of the transport needs, (2) the buying firms share of and influence on the utilization of vehicles, and (3) the division of labor with regard to how the firms handle their needs for transport services. The paper concludes that the variety of transport service procurement approaches impacts heavily on the conditions for vehicle utilization.

  • VARIETY IN TRANSPORT SERVICE SETTINGS AND THE CONDITIONS FOR VEHICLE MAINTENANCE
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the IMP Conference, Kolding, August 2015.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Freight transport is featured by complexity since it relies on the business networks in which the firms that buy transport services are involved. To understand the conditions for vehicle maintenance, the variety of transport service settings and how these link with business networks needs to be uncovered. The aim of this paper is to explore the variety in transport service settings and how these in different ways affect the conditions for vehicle operations and in particular; maintenance activities. The paper relies empirically on highlights from an on-going case study featuring different conditions for, and approaches to, transport services from the perspectives of buyers and suppliers of transport services. The study relates to recent studies of transport service procurement (Dubois and Hulthén 2013, Lammgård et al. 2013, Rogerson et al. 2013) and theoretical suggestions of triads as units of analysis consisting of buyers and suppliers of goods and of transport services (Andersson et al. 2014). Features in transport service settings with an impact on vehicle operations are identified in three dimensions; (1) the buying firm’s share of and influence on the utilisation of vehicles and vehicle fleets, (2) the division of labour with regard to the scope of coordination of vehicle operations, and (3) the nature of the transport needs. There are two kinds of implications suggested. First, there are managerial implications for how firms in the network plan for and perform vehicle maintenance depending on the demands on the uses of the trucks. Second, there are research implications suggesting further research on transport service procurement and how buying firms may tackle the complexities of their business networks on the one hand and of the transport service networks on the other. Both direct and indirect relationships between transport service buyers and vehicle operators require further scrutiny.

  • The virtue of customising solutions: A managerial framework
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Practices and Tools for Servitization: Managing Service Transition. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319765174 ; , s. 291-308
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Solutions are commonly viewed as an integrated bundle of products and services. The solutions also need to be adapted to the specific demands of individual customers, resulting in a high degree of customisation. At the same time, manufacturers offering solutions are guided by strict demands regarding productivity and economies of scale, which, at least partly, are enabled by a higher degree of standardisation. Hence, manufacturing firms have to balance internal demands for efficiency with demands for customisation of solutions. To guide firms concerned with this challenge, a managerial framework for customisation of solutions based on commonalities is proposed.

  • Future goods transport in Sweden 2050: Using a Delphi-based scenario analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Technological Forecasting and Social Change. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-1625. ; 138, s. 178-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transport is an important part of society, and its future is influenced by a number of developments, such as of technology, environmental regulations and societal behaviour. This paper presents a scenario analysis from a Delphi survey focusing on future goods transport in Sweden in 2050 using experts from industry, academia and government. Our results show divergent views of the future of goods transport, with experts having widely different opinions on subjects such as consumer behaviour, which technologies will be dominant, how goods will be transported on main roads and in urban areas, and the role of policy and public investments. The experts, however, share views on the high desirability of improvements connected to sustainability. The study points to great uncertainties of future developments in goods transport, which have implications for the need for interaction and dialogue between actors in industry, academia and government and opens up for further research.

  • Resource interaction: Key concepts, relations and representations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 105, s. 48-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Value co-creation is a core focus area in both B2B marketing and strategy research, necessitating resource utilization within and across organizational boundaries. In the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) group, scholars have focused on the interactions among resources as one important way to analyze central questions about resources in business relationships and networks. This has produced a breadth of investigations and concepts that are locally defined and utilized. This may hamper further theoretical development and inhibit analytical precision. The purpose of this paper is to develop a more general shared understanding of resource interaction by identifying and explicating the key concepts used, and to assess its status as an approach. The paper synthesizes 20 years of research to identify key concepts and the relationships across concepts. This provides both a platform for further conceptual and empirical research within IMP and potential for crossfertilization with parallel B2B areas.
