  • Leading-order gravitational radiation to all spin orders
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 109:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Starting with on-shell amplitudes compatible with the scattering of Kerr black holes up to Compton-amplitude contact terms, we produce the gravitational waveform and memory effect including spin at their leading post-Minkowskian orders to all orders in the spins of both scattering objects. For the memory effect, we present results at next-to-leading order as well, finding a closed form for all spin orders when the spins are anti-aligned and equal in magnitude. Considering instead generically oriented spins, we produce the next-to-leading-order memory to sixth order in spin. Compton-amplitude contact terms up to sixth order in spin are included throughout our analysis.

  • On asymptotic symmetries in higher dimensions for any spin
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate asymptotic symmetries in flat backgrounds of dimension higher than or equal to four. For spin two we provide the counterpart of the extended BMS transformations found by Campiglia and Laddha in four-dimensional Minkowski space. We then identify higher-spin supertranslations and generalised superrotations in any dimension. These symmetries are in one-to-one correspondence with spin-s partially-massless representations on the celestial sphere, with supertranslations corresponding in particular to the representations with maximal depth. We discuss the definition of the corresponding asymptotic charges and we exploit the supertranslational ones in order to prove the link with Weinberg's soft theorem in even dimensions.

    • We study the renormalized action and the renormalized presymplectic potential for Maxwell fields on Anti de Sitter backgrounds of any dimensions. We then use these results to explicitly derive finite boundary charges for angle-dependent asymptotic symmetries. We consider both Poincaré and Bondi coordinates, the former allowing us to control the systematics for arbitrary D, the latter being better suited for a smooth flat limit.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We extract the long-range gravitational potential between two scalar particles with arbitrary masses from the two-to-two elastic scattering amplitude at 2nd Post-Minkowskian order in arbitrary dimensions. In contrast to the four-dimensional case, in higher dimensions the classical potential receives contributions from box topologies. Moreover, the kinematical relation between momentum and position on the classical trajectory contains a new term which is quadratic in the tree-level amplitude. A precise interplay between this new relation and the formula for the scattering angle ensures that the latter is still linear in the classical part of the scattering amplitude, to this order, matching an earlier calculation in the eikonal approach. We point out that both the eikonal exponentiation and the reality of the potential to 2nd post-Minkowskian order can be seen as a consequence of unitarity. We finally present closed-form expressions for the scattering angle given by leading-order gravitational potentials for dimensions ranging from four to ten.

  • Angular momentum of zero-frequency gravitons
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By following closely Weinberg's soft theorem, which captures the 1/omega pole contribution to the amplitude for soft graviton emissions (omega < Lambda on top of an arbitrary background hard process, we calculate the expectation value of the graviton's angular momentum operator for arbitrary collisions dressed with soft radiation. We find that the result becomes independent of the cutoff Lambda on the graviton's frequency, effectively localizing at omega = 0. In this way, our result captures the contribution to the angular momentum that comes from the zero-frequency modes. Like the soft theorem, our formula has an exact dependence on the kinematics of the hard particles and is only a function of their momenta. As an example, we discuss in some detail the case of the 2 -> 2 scattering of spinless particles in General Relativity and N = 8 supergravity.

  • Classical gravitational observables from the Eikonal operator
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 843
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose two possible eikonal operators encoding the effects of classical radiation as coherent states of gravitons and show how to compute from them different classical observables. In the first proposal, only genuinely propagating gravitons are included, while, in the second, zero-frequency modes are added in order to recover the effects of a static gravitational field. We first calculate the radiated energy momentum and the change in each particle's momentum, or impulse, to 3PM order finding agreement with the literature. We then calculate the angular momentum of the gravitational field after the collision. In order to do so, we adapt the method of reverse unitarity to the presence of derivatives in the operators describing the angular momentum and reproduce the result of [1] obtained by resumming the small-velocity expansion. As a new application, we derive also the variation in each particle's angular momentum up to 3PM: calculating separately field and particle contributions allows us to check the balance laws explicitly. We also show how the eikonal operator encodes the linear-response formula of Bini-Damour by deriving the linear radiation-reaction contribution to the transverse impulse at 4PM.

  • Radiation reaction from soft theorems
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 818
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radiation reaction (RR) terms at the third post-Minkowskian (3PM) order have recently been found to be instrumental in restoring smooth continuity between the non-relativistic, relativistic, and ultra-relativistic (including the massless) regimes. Here we propose a new and intriguing connection between RR and soft (bremsstrahlung) theorems which short-circuits the more involved conventional loop computations. Although first noticed in the context of the maximally supersymmetric theory, unitarity and analyticity arguments support the general validity of this 3PM-order connection that we apply, in particular, to Einstein's gravity and to its Jordan-Brans-Dicke extension. In the former case we find full agreement with a recent result by Damour obtained through a very different reasoning.

  • The eikonal approach to gravitational scattering and radiation at O(G(3))
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using N = 8 supergravity as a theoretical laboratory, we extract the 3PM gravitational eikonal for two colliding massive scalars from the classical limit of the corresponding elastic two-loop amplitude. We employ the eikonal phase to obtain the physical deflection angle and to show how its non-relativistic (NR) and ultra-relativistic (UR) regimes are smoothly connected. Such a smooth interpolation rests on keeping contributions to the loop integrals originating from the full soft region, rather than restricting it to its potential sub-region. This task is efficiently carried out by using the method of differential equations with complete near-static boundary conditions. In contrast to the potential-region result, the physical deflection angle includes radiation-reaction contributions that are essential for recovering the finite and universal UR limit implied by general analyticity and crossing arguments. We finally discuss the real emission of massless states, which accounts for the imaginary part of the 3PM eikonal and for the dissipation of energy-momentum. Adopting a direct approach based on unitarity and on the classical limit of the inelastic tree-level amplitude, we are able to treat N = 8 and General Relativity on the same footing, and to complete the conservative 3PM eikonal in Einstein's gravity by the addition of the radiation-reaction contribution. We also show how this approach can be used to compute waveforms, as well as the differential and integrated spectra, for the different radiated massless fields.

  • The eikonal operator at arbitrary velocities I : The soft-radiation limit
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Observables related to the real part of the gravitational eikonal, such as the deflection angle and time delay, have been found so far to have a smooth post-Minkowskian (PM) expansion whose validity extends from the non-relativistic to the most extreme ultra-relativistic (UR) regime, which smoothly connects with massless particle collisions. To describe gravitational radiation, the eikonal phase has to be promoted to a unitary operator for which we motivate a proposal and start discussing properties in the soft-radiation limit. A convergent PM expansion is found to only hold below an UR bound (discussed in the GR literature in the seventies) above which a different expansion is instead needed implying, in general, some non-analyticity in Newton's constant. In this extreme UR regime soft radiative observables receive contributions only from gravitons and are therefore universal. This generalises the pattern discussed in [1] beyond the elastic case.

  • The gravitational eikonal: From particle, string and brane collisions to black-hole encounters
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physics reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 1083, s. 1-169
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Motivated by conceptual problems in quantum theories of gravity, the gravitational eikonal approach, inspired by its electromagnetic predecessor, has been successfully applied to the transplanckian energy collisions of elementary particles and strings since the late eighties, and to string-brane collisions in the past decade. After the direct detection of gravitational waves from black-hole mergers, most of the attention has shifted towards adapting these methods to the physics of black-hole encounters. For such systems, the eikonal exponentiation provides an amplitude-based approach to calculate classical gravitational observables, thus complementing more traditional analytic methods such as the Post-Newtonian expansion, the worldline formalism, or the Effective-One-Body approach. In this review we summarize the main ideas and techniques behind the gravitational eikonal formalism. We discuss how it can be applied in various different physical setups involving particles, strings and branes and then we mainly concentrate on the most recent developments, focusing on massive scalars minimally coupled to gravity, for which we aim at being as self-contained and comprehensive as possible.

  • Universality of ultra-relativistic gravitational scattering
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 811
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss the ultra-relativistic gravitational scattering of two massive particles at two-loop (3PM) level. We find that in this limit the real part of the eikonal, determining the deflection angle, is universal for gravitational theories in the two derivative approximation. This means that, regardless of the number of supersymmetries or the nature of the probes, the result connects smoothly with the massless case discussed since the late eighties by Amati, Ciafaloni and Veneziano. We analyse the problem both by using the analyticity and crossing properties of the scattering amplitudes and, in the case of the maximally supersymmetric theory, by explicit evaluation of the 4-point 2-loop amplitude using the results for the integrals in the full soft region. The first approach shows that the observable we are interested in is determined by the inelastic tree-level amplitude describing the emission of a graviton in the high-energy double-Regge limit, which is the origin of the universality property mentioned above. The second approach strongly suggests that the inclusion of the whole soft region is a necessary (and possibly sufficient) ingredient for recovering ultra relativistic finiteness and universality at the 3PM level. We conjecture that this universality persists at all orders in the PM expansion.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SciPost Physics. - : Stichting SciPost. - 2542-4653. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We construct a basis of conformal primary wavefunctions (CPWs) for p-form fields in any dimension, calculating their scalar products and exhibiting the change of basis between conventional plane wave and CPW mode expansions. We also perform the analysis of the associated shadow transforms. For each family of p-form CPWs, we observe the existence of pure gauge wavefunctions of conformal dimension increment = p, while shadow p-forms of this weight are only pure gauge in the critical spacetime dimension value D = 2p + 2. We then provide a systematic technique to obtain the large -r asymptotic limit near .Q based on the method of regions, which naturally takes into account the presence of both ordinary and contact terms on the celestial sphere. In D = 4, this allows us to reformulate in a conformal primary language the links between scalars and dual two-forms.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss modifications to the Hawking spectrum that arise when the asymptotic states are supertranslated or superrotated. For supertranslations we find nontrivial off-diagonal phases in the two-point correlator although the emission spectrum is eventually left unchanged, as previously pointed out in the literature. In contrast, superrotations give rise to modifications which manifest themselves in the emission spectrum and depend nontrivially on the associated conformal factor at future null infinity. We study Lorentz boosts and a class of superrotations whose conformal factors do not depend on the azimuthal angle on the celestial sphere and whose singularities at the north and south poles have been associated to the presence of a cosmic string. In spite of such singularities, superrotations still lead to finite spectral emission rates of particles and energy which display a distinctive power-law behavior at high frequencies for each angular momentum state. The integrated particle emission rate and emitted power, on the contrary, while finite for boosts, do exhibit ultraviolet divergences for superrotations, between logarithmic and quadratic. Such divergences can be ascribed to modes with support along the cosmic string. In the logarithimic case, corresponding to a superrotation which covers the sphere twice, the total power emitted still presents the Stefan-Boltzmann form but with an effective area which diverges logarithmically in the ultraviolet.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We calculate the inelastic 2 ? 3 one-loop amplitude for the scattering of two point-like, spinless objects with generic masses involving the additional emission of a single graviton. We focus on the near-forward, or classical, limit. Our results include the leading and subleading orders in the soft-region expansion, which captures all non-analytic contributions in the transferred momentum and in the graviton's frequency. This allows us to check the first constraint arising from the inelastic exponentiation put forward in refs. [1-3], and to calculate the 2 ? 3 one-loop matrix element of the N-operator, linked to the S-matrix by S = e(iN), showing that it is real, classical and free of infrared divergences. We discuss how our results feature in the calculation of the O(G(3)) corrections to the asymptotic waveform.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 108:10

    • We calculate the spin-orbit corrections to the loss of angular momentum in a two-body scattering at third post-Minkowskian order, O(G3), from scattering amplitudes using the eikonal operator. These results include effects linear in spin, are valid for generic spin orientations, and are presented in a manifestly Poincaré covariant way. We include both radiative losses, by means of the leading-order gravitational waveform, and static losses, by means of the appropriate -i0 prescription in the leading soft graviton theorem, finding agreement with known results in the post-Newtonian limit.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 131:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We calculate the tidal corrections to the loss of angular momentum in a two-body collision at leading post-Minkowskian order from an amplitude-based approach. The eikonal operator allows us to efficiently combine elastic and inelastic amplitudes, and captures both the contributions due to genuine gravitationalwave emissions and those due to the static gravitational field. We calculate the former by harnessing powerful collider-physics techniques such as reverse unitarity, thereby reducing them to cut two-loop integrals, and cross check the result by performing an independent calculation in the post-Newtonian limit. For the latter, we can employ the results of P. Di Vecchia et al. [Angular momentum of zero-frequency gravitons, J. High Energy Phys. 08 (2022) 172.], where static-field effects were calculated for generic gravitational scattering events using the leading soft graviton theorem.

  • Corrections to Wigner-Eckart Relations by Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Symmetry. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-8994. ; 12:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The matrix elements of operators transforming as irreducible representations of an unbroken symmetry groupGare governed by the well-known Wigner-Eckart relations. In the case of infinite-dimensional systems, withGspontaneously broken, we prove that the corrections to such relations are provided by symmetry breaking Ward identities, and simply reduce to a tadpole term involving Goldstone bosons. The analysis extends to the case in which an explicit symmetry breaking term is present in the Hamiltonian, with the tadpole term now involving pseudo Goldstone bosons. An explicit example is discussed, illustrating the two cases.

  • Infrared divergences and the eikonal exponentiation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 104:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to explore the interplay between the eikonal resummation in impact-parameter space and the exponentiation of infrared divergences in momentum space for gravity amplitudes describing collisions of massive objects. The eikonal governs the classical dynamics relevant to the two-body problem, and its infrared properties are directly linked to the zero-frequency limit of the gravitational wave emission spectrum and to radiation-reaction effects. Combining eikonal and infrared exponentiations it is possible to derive these properties at a given loop order starting from lower-loop data. This is illustrated explicitly in N = 8 supergravity and in general relativity by deriving the divergent part of the two-loop eikonal from tree-level and one-loop elastic amplitudes.
