Remarques à propos d’un texte prestigieux de Jacques Derrida Ma contribution commence par une petite analyse critique de l’argumentation développée dans un des ouvrages les plus prestigieux des années 60 – De la grammatologie – dont l’auteur, chacun le sait, est Jacques Derrida, né en Algérie en 1930 et mort à Paris en 2004. Aux yeux de certains, ce texte est même un chef-d’œuvre. En tout cas, il représente le début d’une carrière comme écrivain et philosophe tout à fait spectaculaire, surtout aux États-Unis, mais également en France et dans le reste de l’Europe. Mais, me dira-t-on, à quoi bon s’intéresser à un ouvrage qui n’occupe plus l’avant de la scène – d’autant plus que tout porte à croire que le poststructura-lisme est un courant de pensée en voie de disparition ? Si une telle initiative se justifie pourtant, c’est pour une raison bien déterminée. Ayant – un peu sur le tard – fait l’effort de lire ce texte avec toute l’attention dont j’étais capable, et en faisant appel à toute mon expérience en linguistique et en philosophie, je constate que, s’il n’est pas possible de vraiment comprendre les propositions de Derrida, c’est qu’il plonge ses lecteurs dans une confusion d’incohérences, de contra-dictions, d’invraisemblances et de redéfinitions tout à fait extravagantes. On se trouve ici devant le mystère le plus complet. En fait, comment expliquer que Derrida - qui fut un homme à la fois compétent et intelligent – ait pu publier un texte aussi mal pensé et, en partie, aussi vide de sens que De la grammatologie ? L’idée que je voudrais suggérer, sans entrer dans les spéculations psychanalytiques, c’est qu’au départ il a dû s’agir d’un canular du type cultivé à l’École normale supérieure où, une fois arrivé en France, le futur professeur de l’histoire de la philosophie est entré après deux échecs. Je me propose de développer cette idée et de la justifier, tant bien que mal, dans l’espoir de voir les admirateurs de Derrida passer à l’attaque pour rendre justice à leur héros et pour me convaincre ainsi de mon erreur.

    • The work reported here is part of an ongoing, larger study on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and all of its unabridged translations into Swedish, the ultimate scope of which is a discussion of methods and principles to be used in aesthetic translation assessment. This paper is devoted to patterns of rhythmic variation and their textual or literary functions in Dante’s Comedy and – subsequently - to the way these have been carried over to the Swedish target texts. Stylistic features such as lexical and phonetic variation in rhyming position, including sound symbolism, and various other lexical and syntactic choices will be treated elsewhere. Verse rhythm in the Divine Comedy is generally considered to be quite irregular. It is argued here, however, that there are good reasons to focus instead on the strong underlying regularities of Dante’s verse which may be brought to light by using a slightly different set of principles for rhythmic analysis than the usual one. The advantage of operating such a change in perspective is to allow for an easier detection of the extremely subtle balance between symmetry and variation, which in turn may yield both a closer description and a deeper understanding of the comedy’s linguistic art. The general outcome of this study proves to be a detailed demonstration of Dante’s superior art and of the formidable difficulties to be overcome on the part of any translator trying his luck on this huge masterpiece.

    • The object of this paper is to describe the reception in France of the works of the Swedish poet and 2011 Nobel Prize Laureate Tomas Tranströmer and to discuss plausible interpretations of the fact that, whereas the French – with certain exceptions – reacted to Tranströmer’s being chosen as a winner with either indifference or hostility, the rest of the world, including Sweden, the U.S.A, China, Japan, and Europe reacted with enthusiasm. The poet’s work having been translated into over sixty different languages is a clear indication of its world-wide popularity, as is the support from significant international personalities in the world of poetry, like Wisława Szymborska, Adonis, Robert Bly, Seamus Heaney, or Bei Dao, to mention just a few. Two hypotheses are presented in the paper to account for the greatly diverging patterns of reception observed. Both are being discussed at some length. The first of them concerns the quality of the translation, the merits and defects of which are scrutinized as for parameters like versification and metric form, alliterations, repetitions, semantic errors, metaphors, metonymies, poetic humour, and referentiality of denominations connected with culture and topography. My conclusion being that in spite of certain weaknesses found in Jacques Outin’s version of Tranströmer’s Collected Works – which is the only translation available so far – this is not enough to explain the poet’s reception in France. The second one concerns what he talks about in his poems; in short, various aspects of his poetic universe. An important characteristic of this poetry is the fact that most, if not all, poems start from a definite point in time and space, often located in the Stockholm archipelago where the poet’s ancestors were born and where the poet himself has spent most of his summer holidays since he was a boy. Thus, the reader is frequently confronted, on the one hand, with magic pictures of a typically Swedish landscape, on the other with sensations of an existential or metaphysical character, intertwined with such physical descriptions. It could be, that the combination of details from the flora and the fauna and the landscape with mystic experience is simply too much for a French mentality of today, impregnated as it is with intellectualism in general and a Cartesian type of rationalism. However, the problem remains to be further investigated!

    • In 1993, when it was brought to the attention of the reading public how the French publishing house Hachette had treated Pippi Longstocking, this caused quite a stir in the mass media in Sweden and elsewhere. The present article tells the story of how all this came about, including a report of the correspondence between Astrid Lindgren, her French editor, and Heldner - the outcome of which was a new translation published in 1995. The second part of the article contains a brief discussion of principles and criteria to be applied in the assessment of literary translations. In the third part these principles are brought to bear on some features of the new French translation from 1995, which is judged to be satisfactory on the whole, but which does contain some theoretically interesting omissions, additions, and errors.

    • It is argued in the present article that literary analysis will sometimes profit by insights, concepts, and methods pertaining to the field of linguistics. The well-known children’s book character Pippi Longstocking, created by Astrid Lindgren, is used as a case in point to demonstrate the well-foundedness of this contention. Pippi’s miraculous physical strength proves to be paralleled by an equally impressive mastery of language, which shows up as a playfully anarchistic attitude towards various kinds of semantic and pragmatic rules. She incessantly creates amusing effects by overtly violating such rules (concerning e.g. polarity items, selectional restrictions, or presupposition) and by taking advantage of all kinds of possible, but not immediately evident lexical and syntactic ambiguities. Just how cleverly these effects are achieved could only be revealed by means of a close linguistic analysis. At the same time, the result of this analysis contributes to a better appreciation both of the character of Pippi and of the textual qualities of these texts.

    • Will Democracy Prevail in our Grandchildren’s Sweden? ABSTRACT: By way of introduction, I will present a few central aspects of the concept of democracy and give a short account of the growth of democracy in Sweden, before concentrating on the three main objectives of this article. The first of these consists in identifying some specific threats against democracy which seem to be growing in our country and in the rest of Europe. I will do so by accounting for certain important ideological components of the programmes of a number of extreme right parties and for the election outcomes lately for each of those parties both in the elections for national parliaments and for the European Union. My second objective is to discuss the reasons for the spectacular success such parties seem to have had amongst the electorates in various European countries. In this context I will be dealing with things such as the worldwide economic crisis and its consequences, rampant inequality, the growing one- sidedness of media, the deepening cleft between politicians and their electors, an educational system affording with every year less knowledge and an increasingly defective faculty of analytical thinking – accompanied by a diminishing resilience against the rhetoric of populistic propaganda – and, finally, the characteristic individualism of today’s societies. A third, and final, objective is to reflect on what we as citizens can do about the threatening picture beginning to take form against the horizon. I will thereby hopefully incite the reader to pursue his own thinking around this question, which is of such a great importance to the future of our grand-children.

  • Krisernas Grekland i politik och litteratur. Arvet från Sokrates, Zorba och Lambrakis

    • Greklands ekonomiska krisläge är välbekant för de flesta av oss efter de senaste årens gigantiska nödlån. Men Grekland är välbekant också av mer positiva skäl, inte minst som uppskattat semestermål. Allra mest central är ändå den roll Grekland spelat och spelar som ursprung för den västerländska demokratin, kulturen och civilisationen. Det viktigaste syftet med Krisernas Grekland i politik och litteratur har varit att både ge en tydlig bild av hur dagens svåra situation egentligen ser ut och att underlätta för en svensk publik att bättre förstå hur den kunnat uppstå. Därför skildras landets politiska historia från mellankrigstiden och fram till och med valet i januari 2015 – och den dramatiska folkomröstningen den 5 juli i år. Särskild uppmärksamhet ägnas den höger- och extremkonservativa tråden med Metaxasdiktaturen, som startade 1936, de pronazistiska grupperingarnas samarbete med Nazityskland under ockupationen och deras väpnade aktioner mot den motståndsrörelse som efter tre år lyckades jaga ut de tyska ockupanterna ur landet. Vidare tas det därpå följande, så förödande inbördeskriget upp, då britterna under Churchill i samverkan med de tidigare nazikollaboratörerna krossade motståndsrörelsen, sedan denna frivilligt lämnat från sig vapnen i tron att fred skulle råda. Vi får sedan följa hur samma politiska trådar löper vidare till militärjuntans maktövertagande och diktaturen 1967-1974. Under den påföljande, relativt demokratiska perioden domineras Greklands styre av de sedan kriget makthavande familjerna Papandreou, Karamanlis och Mitsotakis, som sätts in i sitt sammanhang, generation för generation. För att ge perspektiv på den kaotiska greklandsbilden konfronteras genomgående de politiska skeendena med skildringar av litterära bilder från motsvarande epok. Här finns återblickar på Sokrates och Platon, men också på en rad framträdande författare och poeter, däribland Nobelpristagare som Elytis. Den kända Zorba-figuren diskuteras, liksom den musikaliska och litterära ikonen Mikis Theodorakis. Framträdande svenskspråkiga författare som skrivit om Grekland tas upp, som Theodor Kallifatides, men även de mest välkända engelskspråkiga, som Henry Miller och Lawrence Durrell. Boken bygger på omfattande läsning av både fack- och skönlitteratur. Den har stor bredd och bjuder på självständiga analyser. Christina Heldner är professor i romanska språk och har erfarenhet av att läsa och skriva på grekiska. Torsten Rönnerstrand är historiker och samhällsvetare samt fil. dr och docent i litteraturvetenskap vid Göteborgs universitet och professor vid Strömstad Akademi. Båda författarna har under många år vistats och rest i Grekland.

    • On entend quelquefois déplorer l’absence d’une critique des traductions fondée sur une Étude objective et systématique du texte. Il est vrai que des modèles ont dejà été proposés pour évaluer la qualité d’un texte cible donné. Or, à ma connaissance, il s’agit toujours de tentatives portant sur le langage non littéraire. Cette communication présentera l’esquisse d’un modèle qui, en partant d’une ana¬lyse détaillée d’un certain nombre de traits textuels formellement définis, permet de comparer et d’évaluer des textes cible constituant chacun une traduction d’un texte original d’une grande valeur esthétique et littéraire. En fait, suivant l’hypothèse qui sous-tend ce modèle, il est possible d’identifier un ensemble de paramètres liés à la forme linguistique (métrique ou textuelle) qui, conjointement, permettent des prédictions quant à la qualité générale d’un texte cible que l’on compare soit à son texte source, soit à d’autres textes cible. Ce modèle a fait l’objet d’un examen préliminaire dont je décrirai certains résultats. Le texte source utilisé est le cinquième chant de l’Inferno de la Divina Commedia de Dante Alighieri, les textes cible sont neuf traductions en suédois publiés entre 1857 et 1983.

    • In this work, which deals with the interpretation of negated sentences in French with respect to the scope of ne…pas, (Neg), interest is focussed on the semantic concept of scope referred to in statements such as: “The scope of a given negative is the constituent interpreted as being denied”. The aim of the study is to identify some of the factors enabling the addressee of a negated sentence to discern what part(s) of it the negative was intended to affect. Negated sentences in isolation tend to remain unspecified as to the scope of Neg, but not so sentences in context. The investigation reported here was therefore carried out on authentic texts. The scope of ne…pas was determined by means of a test of entailment. This test makes it possible to establish what positive inferences, if any, native speakers are prepared to make from a given sentence provided with its context. In the analysed material, two main factors turned out to be at work. First, context, as represented by an affirmative sentence, XZ, attached asyndetically to a partially identical negated sentence, Neg XY, proved sufficient to identify Y as the scope of Neg where Neg XY was used to contradict a previous statement XY. Context also designated Y as the scope of Neg when a fact, X, established by the preceding text, could be matched against the content expressed by Neg XY. Secondly, some linguistic items, particularly certain types of adverbials, were found to attract negation, independently of context, on account of their semantic structure. This study also includes a discussion of the interaction between contextual and semantic factors, as well as of problems connected with the testing of certain semantic predicates, and with the definition of the scope of negation.

    • This study is concerned with the interpretation of French noun phrases containing an instance of the indefinite determiner AUCUN, which may be seen as an existential quantifier in the scope of negation. Such noun phrases give rise to two distinct readings according as they appear in existential or declarative sentences, particularly in the subject position. In existential propositions an NP of the structure AUCUN N is used to assert the non existence of entities, substances, or sets of the category denoted by N relative to a specific location in time and space, as in Dans cette région, il n’y a aucune classe maternelle de plus de quatorze enfants. This reading of AUCUN N is being referred to as non referential. In a declarative sentence like Aucune maison n’a été épargnée, the negative quantifier operates on a finite, specific subset of entities of the category N (i.e. maisons), the existence of which is presupposed. It is asserted that the action, process, or state denoted by the verb does not hold for any of the members of this subset. This reading is claimed to be referential. The question addressed here is that of identifying the factors which determine the interpretation of an actual utterance. In fact, there exist no simple formal criteria for deciding whether a given utterance containing a noun phrase of this structure should be analysed as declarative rather than existential, except where an explicit use of an impersonal construction such as il y a is involved. This problem must clearly be solved in order for a parser to work out valid inferences from this type of sentences. My approach is exclusively semantic, but an analysis along pragmatic lines may prove necessary in the end to account for certain cases. An analysis of the data obtained from a computer readable corpus yields the following results. A non referential reading is alone available for a subject NP of the type AUCUN N in passivized sentences, if its head noun features the properties abstract and syncategorematic, and if it takes a verb which typically collocates with this noun (a ”support” verb). Furthermore, there is a strong tendency for any subject NP containing AUCUN to be interpreted non referentially when combined with an intransitive existential verb, although a referential reading is shown not to be entirely excluded. On the other hand, the referential reading obtains whenever the nominal head of the subject NP is categorematic and subcategorized animate or concrete and combines with a verb whose semantic structure is sufficiently rich to guarantee its autonomy. The combination of a verb, which imposes few semantic constraints on its subject - or none - and a subject NP denoting a concrete or animate referent, tends to produce an ambiguous sentence, which may only be disambiguated by taking pragmatic factors into account. RÉSUMÉ FRANÇAIS Les syntagmes nominaux déterminés par l’indéfini AUCUN - que l’on peut envisager comme un quantificateur existentiel intégré dans le champ de la négation - reçoivent deux interprétations distinctes, surtout en position de sujet, suivant qu’ils apparaissent dans un énoncé déclaratif ou existentiel. Une lecture non référentielle s’impose en proposition existentielle, où ces SN contribuent à asserter la non existence ou l’absence d’objets (ou de substances ou d’ensembles d’objets) de la catégorie désignée par le nom tête. L’énoncé Dans cette région, il n’y a aucune classe maternelle de plus de quatorze enfants en constitue un exemple caractéristique. Dans des énoncés déclaratifs, comme Aucune maison n’a été épargnée , ce quantificateur négatif opère sur un sous-ensemble fini et spécifique d’objets de la catégorie dénotée par la tête nominale (c’est-à-dire maisons). L’existence de ce sous-ensemble étant présupposée, cette lecture est qualifiée de référentielle. Le problème traité dans cet article est celui d’identifier les facteurs responsables de la sélection de l’une ou de l’autre lecture. En fait, il n’existe pas de critère formel simple permettant de décider si un énoncé donné doit s’analyser comme déclaratif ou existentiel, sauf quand celui-ci fait intervenir une construction impersonnelle comme il y a. L’approche adoptée ici consiste à explorer les possibilités d’une analyse purement sémantique cantonnée dans la phrase. Une éventuelle analyse pragmatique interviendra à un stade ultérieur pour rendre compte des cas demeurés ambigus au niveau phrastique. Un examen des données fournies par un corpus informatisé a donné les résultats suivants. Un SN déterminé par AUCUN et sujet d’un verbe passif accepte seule la lecture non référentielle, lorsqu’il a un nom tête syncatégorématique marqué [abstrait] et qu’il s’accompagne d’un verbe support. Quant aux SN en AUCUN sujets d’un verbe existentiel, ceux-ci manifestent une forte tendance à recevoir une interprétation non référentielle. En revanche, la lecture référentielle s’impose dès que le nom tête du SN sujet est catégorématique et marqué [animé] ou [concret] et que la structure sémantique du verbe est suffisamment riche pour lui assurer une certaine autonomie. En combinant un verbe qui impose peu de contraintes sémantiques à son sujet - ou aucune - à un SN sujet dénotant un référent concret ou animé, on obtiendra souvent une phrase ambigue, dont l’ambiguïté ne sera levée que par une prise en compte de facteurs discursifs ou pragmatiques.

    • Att trolla är svårt, men att förtrollas är enkelt, det menar i alla fall Tomas Tranströmer i sin dikt "Blåsipporna". Som läsare av hans dikter håller man gärna med, inte minst då det gäller denne poets eget bildspråk. Däremot inser man nog utan vidare hur extremt svårt det måste vara att skapa starka poetiska bilder. Om inte förr så märker man det när man försöker analysera den enastående magin i vår senaste Nobelpristagares märkliga förmåga att skapa oförglömlig poesi. Vad den här artikeln vill försöka förstå och beskriva är vad som karakteriserar speciellt den tranströmerska språkmagin.

    • This paper investigates into the background of the spectacular success of the Frenchbphilosopher Jacques Derrida (1930-2004), which seems to remain strong considering the fact that, as late as 2007, Derrida was still among the most quoted authors in the world, in humanities. The start of his career was the publication in 1967 of thebextremely influential book On Grammatology devoted to the presentation of his chief idea known as deconstructionism. To put it shortly, this term alludes to the practice of reading and interpreting texts – whether literary or philosophical – against the intentions of their authors, so as to make them say what they were probably never meant to say. This method or doctrine soon became extremely popular, especially in departments of comparative literature or literary criticism, both in the U.S.A., in France and the rest of Europe. Along with it came an attitude of radical scepticism which came in handy in cases of opposition. What I try to do here is a close reading of De la grammatologie, in order to highlight flaws in Derrida’s own text and argumenta tion. The conclusion reached is entirely in keeping with the spontaneous impression one gets from reading Derrida’s text. Apart from its tiring verbosity, his style is most of the time unbelievably obscure and even void of sense. Another recurrent problem i s lack of referential exactness. But when, at times, the text becomes a bit less vague, it turns depreciatory and disdainful, as if to compensate for a lack of argumentative strength by hitting below the belt. Given these circumstances, thequestion is whether this text was originally meant to convey a serious theoretical discussion at all. An alternative interpretation discussed here consists in viewing it as a hoax played upon the reader to confuse him, the way the traditional “canular” was used in the famous École Normale Supérieure where Derrida was trained as a philosopher.

    • The work reported here is part of an ongoing, larger study on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and all of its unabridged translations into Swedish, the ultimate scope of which is a discussion of methods and principles to be used in aesthetic translation assessment. This paper is devoted to patterns of rhythmic variation and their textual or literary functions in Dante’s Comedy and – subsequently - to the way these have been carried over to the Swedish target texts. Stylistic features such as lexical and phonetic variation in rhyming position, including sound symbolism, and various other lexical and syntactic choices will be treated elsewhere. Verse rhythm in the Divine Comedy is generally considered to be quite irregular. It is argued here, however, that there are good reasons to focus instead on the strong underlying regularities of Dante’s verse which may be brought to light by using a slightly different set of principles for rhythmic analysis than the usual one. The advantage of operating such a change in perspective is to allow for an easier detection of the extremely subtle balance between symmetry and variation, which in turn may yield both a closer description and a deeper understanding of the comedy’s linguistic art. The general outcome of this study proves to be a detailed demonstration of Dante’s superior art and of the formidable difficulties to be overcome on the part of any translator trying his luck on this huge masterpiece.

    • This paper is devoted to the Italian 14th century poet and scholar Dante Alighieri and his poetic and narrative masterwork La Divina Commedia, usually considered to be one of the highlights of Western literature. More specifically, its object is to examine and characterize the quality of the hitherto seven complete translations into Swedish as for semantic equivalence, equivalence in a number of formal aspects connected with language, style, and versification constraints, and, finally, acceptability of target text language to a contemporary readership. The translations taken into consideration are those of Nils Lovén, 1856-57; Edvard Lidforss, 1903; S.C. Bring, 1905; Aline Pipping, 1915, 1924; Arnold Norlind, 1921, 1930; Åke Ohlmarks, 1966-1969; Ingvar Björkeson, 1983.
