  • Scandcleft randomised trials of primary surgery for unilateral cleft lip and palate: 4. Speech outcomes in 5-year-olds - velopharyngeal competency and hypernasality
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery. - : TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 2000-656X .- 2000-6764. ; 51:1, s. 27-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aim: Adequate velopharyngeal function and speech are main goals in the treatment of cleft palate. The objective was to investigate if there were differences in velopharyngeal competency (VPC) and hypernasality at age 5 years in children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) operated on with different surgical methods for primary palatal repair. A secondary aim was to estimate burden of care in terms of received additional secondary surgeries and speech therapy. Design: Three parallel group, randomised clinical trials were undertaken as an international multicentre study by 10 cleft teams in five countries: Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and the UK. Methods: Three different surgical protocols for primary palatal repair were tested against a common procedure in the total cohort of 448 children born with a non-syndromic UCLP. Speech audio and video recordings of 391 children (136 girls, 255 boys) were available and perceptually analysed. The main outcome measures were VPC and hypernasality from blinded assessments. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the prevalences in the arms in any of the trials. VPC: Trial 1, A: 58%, B: 61%; Trial 2, A: 57%, C: 54%; Trial 3, A: 35%, D: 51%. No hypernasality: Trial 1, A: 54%, B: 44%; Trial 2, A: 47%, C: 51%; Trial 3, A: 34%, D: 49%. Conclusions: No differences were found regarding VPC and hypernasality at age 5 years after different methods for primary palatal repair. The burden of care in terms of secondary pharyngeal surgeries, number of fistulae, and speech therapy visits differed.

  • A Scandcleft randomised trials of primary surgery for unilateral cleft lip and palate: 1. Planning and management.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2000-656X .- 2000-6764. ; 51:1, s. 2-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Longstanding uncertainty surrounds the selection of surgical protocols for the closure of unilateral cleft lip and palate, and randomised trials have only rarely been performed. This paper is an introduction to three randomised trials of primary surgery for children born with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). It presents the protocol developed for the trials in CONSORT format, and describes the management structure that was developed to achieve the long-term engagement and commitment required to complete the project.METHOD: Ten established national or regional cleft centres participated. Lip and soft palate closure at 3-4 months, and hard palate closure at 12 months served as a common method in each trial. Trial 1 compared this with hard palate closure at 36 months. Trial 2 compared it with lip closure at 3-4 months and hard and soft palate closure at 12 months. Trial 3 compared it with lip and hard palate closure at 3-4 months and soft palate closure at 12 months. The primary outcomes were speech and dentofacial development, with a series of perioperative and longer-term secondary outcomes.RESULTS: Recruitment of 448 infants took place over a 9-year period, with 99.8% subsequent retention at 5 years.CONCLUSION: The series of reports that follow this introductory paper include comparisons at age 5 of surgical outcomes, speech outcomes, measures of dentofacial development and appearance, and parental satisfaction. The outcomes recorded and the numbers analysed for each outcome and time point are described in the series.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ISRCTN29932826.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery. - : TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 2000-656X .- 2000-6764. ; 51:1, s. 38-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aim: Normal articulation before school start is a main objective in cleft palate treatment. The aim was to investigate if differences exist in consonant proficiency at age 5 years between children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) randomised to different surgical protocols for primary palatal repair. A secondary aim was to estimate burden of care in terms of received additional secondary surgeries and speech therapy. Design: Three parallel group, randomised clinical trials were undertaken as an international multicentre study by 10 cleft teams in five countries: Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and the UK. Methods: Three different surgical protocols for primary palatal repair were tested against a common procedure in the total cohort of 448 children born with non-syndromic UCLP. Speech audio- and video-recordings of 391 children (136 girls and 255 boys) were available and transcribed phonetically. The main outcome measure was Percent Consonants Correct (PCC) from blinded assessments. Results: In Trial 1, arm A showed statistically significant higher PCC scores (82%) than arm B (78%) (p=.045). No significant differences were found between prevalences in Trial 2, A: 79%, C: 82%; or Trial 3, A: 80%, D: 85%. Across all trials, girls achieved better PCC scores, excluding s-errors, than boys (91.0% and 87.5%, respectively) (p=.01). Conclusions: PCC scores were higher in arm A than B in Trial 1, whereas no differences were found between arms in Trials 2 or 3. The burden of care in terms of secondary pharyngeal surgeries, number of fistulae, and speech therapy visits differed.

  • HCCI Engine Modeling and Control Using Conservation Principles
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: SAE Technical Paper 2008-01-0789.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) principle holds promise to increase efficiency and to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines. As HCCI combustion lacks direct ignition timing control and auto-ignition depends on the operating condition, control of auto-ignition is necessary. Since auto-ignition of a homogeneous mixture is very sensitive to operating conditions, a fast combustion phasing control is necessary for reliable operation. To this purpose, HCCI modeling and model-based control with experimental validation were studied. A six-cylinder heavy-duty HCCI engine was controlled on a cycle-to-cycle basis in real time by applying in-cylinder pressure feedback. A low-complexity physical model was developed, aiming at describing the major thermodynamic and chemical interactions in the course of an engine stroke. The model shows the importance of thermal interaction between the combustion and the cylinder walls. The model was used to synthesize a controller for controlling the combustion phasing by varying the inlet valve closing and the inlet temperature. The sythesized controller behaves well both in steady-state and during step changes of the desired combustion phasing.

  • Ethanol-Diesel Fumigation in a Multi-Cylinder Engine
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: SAE technical paper 2008-01-0033.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fumigation was studied in a 12 L six-cylinder heavy-duty engine. Port-injected ethanol was ignited with a small amount of diesel injected into the cylinder. The setup left much freedom for influencing the combustion process, and the aim of this study was to find operation modes that result in a combustion resembling that of a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine with high efficiency and low NOx emissions. Igniting the ethanol-air mixture using direct-injected diesel has attractive properties compared to traditional HCCI operation where the ethanol is ignited by pressure alone. No preheating of the mixture is required, and the amount of diesel injected can be used to control the heat release rate. The two fuel injection systems provide a larger flexibility in extending the HCCI operating range to low and high loads. It was shown that cylinder-to-cylinder variations present a considerable challenge for this type of combustion. By using closed-loop cylinder-individual control based on incylinder pressure sensors, combustion was successfully harmonized between the cylinders. Successful fumigation operation was verified up to 18.4 bar BMEP at a fixed engine speed of 1450 rpm. Two load points (4.6 bar BMEP and 9.2 bar BMEP) were studied in detail. Different diesel injection timings, diesel ratios, and EGR rates were investigated, and comparisons were drawn to pure diesel operation of the same engine. At medium load (9.2 bar BMEP), it was possible to obtain a stable HCCI-like combustion with low NOx emissions (0.1 g/kWh), reasonably high brake efficiency (37 %), and low pressure derivatives (5 bar/CAD). High load operation (18.4 bar BMEP) resulted in low pressure derivatives (5.5 bar/CAD), acceptable brake efficency (36 %), and relatively low NOx emissions (0.34 g/kWh).

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we describe how we generate Functional Mock-up Units (FMUs) for the automation block language Bloqqi. This allows Bloqqi control programs to be tested with simulations of the physical processes they control. The physical process can be specified in any tool that supports the Functional Mockup-Interface (FMI) standard. For example, we have successfully run Bloqqi programs together with Modelica models exported as FMUs. Bloqqi programs execute at discrete times, and we describe how this is handled in the implementation of the DoStep function, specified in the standard.

  • Bridging the Gap between Attitude and Behavior in Food Consumption
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: MAPP Workshop.
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • AbstractTitle: “Bridging the gap between attitude and behavior in food consumption”Authors: Maria Frostling-Henningsson, Solveig WikströmAffiliations: School of Business, Stockholm universityKeywords: Attitude, behavior, food consumptionThere are many demands on contemporary food consumption for bringing about not only well-being but also pleasure and health. The different demands are often perceived as conflicting, calling for trade offs. One example is the contradiction between what tastes good and what is healthy. Theoretical research on these issues deals with the well known fact that what consumers say and what they do are not always the same. Hence, there is a gap between attitudes and behavior, extensively referred to in consumer behavior literature, but scarcely researched more in depth. The most influential model for measuring attitudes is the Fishbein model, taking into account salient beliefs, object attribute linkages and evaluation, but ignoring the role of affection. We proceed from an approach where the food and the meal are embedded in a cultural and social context. With this approach the gap between attitude and behavior depends not only on consumers’ preferences and resources, but rather on the involvement, perceptions, experiences, life-styles and self-image of the consumers. We also proceed from a perspective where consumption of food is perceived as defining relationships with ‘people that matter’.Theoretically, we will proceed from Festinger’s theory of cognitive dissonance, Levi-Strauss ideas of structures behind the fluctuating and changing appearances of social behavior and Miller’s theory of shopping. The results will add empirical and theoretical knowledge regarding how consumers relate to food on a broad basis. The study will provide knowledge about combinations of claims that consumers perceive as strongly contradictory when making decisions concerning food. Additionally, the analysis will provide information about various patterns of trade offs that different category of consumers’ exhibit. In summary, this information will explain the mechanisms behind the gap between what consumers say and what they actually do.The research is part of a four year multidisciplinary research program.

    • This work seeks to understand young adults' motives for online gaming and extends previous research concerning social interaction in virtual contexts. The focus of the study is on Counter-Strike and World of Warcraft. Drawing on Baudrillard's concept of simulacra, an analysis of young gamers' motivation for gaming is carried out. The empirical data was generated employing a mix of qualitative methods such as researcher introspection, observation, and interviews with young adults in two different online gaming centers in Stockholm during 2006 and 2007. The results show that online gaming is foremost motivated by social reasons providing the gamers with a possibility of cooperation and communication. Some of the gamers in the study were motivated by escapism. Online gaming also provides gamers with an experience in which ""flow"" can be obtained and serves as a ""hallucination of the real,"" making it possible to do things and try out behaviors that would be impossible to do or try in real life. The gamers felt that online gaming gave them more experiences than real life could provide. For research purposes, this work provides a better understanding of the motivational aspects for gamers.

  • Frankly speaking - Anthropomorphism in building brands
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: NFF 2013 On Practice and Knowledge Eruptions. ; , s. 195-195
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the appeal of anthropomorphism to marketers. This is done through reference to three relevant advertising models; the Symbolic Communications Model, The Symbolic Transfer Device Model, and the VisCAP Presenter Model, and one critical case study involving an anthropomorphized sheep presenter for a Swedish mobile telecommunications company. The advertising models are found to support the effectiveness of the symbolic presenter, Frank the Sheep, particularly explaining how meaning is transferred from the presenter to the brand, and the effects the presenter has on advertising communication effects such as brand awareness and brand attitude. We extend previous research on how linking anthropomorphic associations to brands can be employed to increase effectiveness of these common marketing communication tactics. We show that anthropomorphized animals can work effectively and quickly when presenting a new brand to the market, but also offer several cautions for managers.Summary statement of contributionWe contribute to theory by drawing together three different but related strands of advertising to explicate how the anthropomorphic brand presenter can increase advertising effectiveness, particularly in quickly positioning or repositioning a brand and developing brand equity. We contribute to managerial practice by demonstrating, through the use of one critical case study, how the choice of anthropomorphic brand presenter must be a considered process, but is one that can add to advertising effectiveness if managed appropriately.

  • Intentions to buy organic not manifested in practice
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: British Food Journal. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0007-070X .- 1758-4108. ; 116:5, s. 872-887
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - This research paper focuses on why intentions to buy organic and/or eco-friendly food are not always manifested in practice. Based on Warde's antinomies of structural opposition, we found several consumer dilemmas including the dilemma of choosing between organic and eco-friendly food. This study addresses ethical and environmental concerns that contemporary Swedish consumers have when eating organic and taking environmental action and presents some consumer strategies used to cope with these concerns. Design/methodology/approach - The empirical data was collected from a consumer panel followed during 18 months. A mix of qualitative methods was used; interviews, shop-along studies, ZMET, collecting shopping receipts and poems. Findings - The research paper contributes with knowledge about the dilemma between organic and eco-friendly. It further defines the strategy of justification of non-choices as the most common consumer strategy to cope with the dilemma. Research limitations/implications - Results from this study shows that conscious consumers often face a conflict between buying organic food and taking environmental considerations. In order to solve the conflict consumers used various strategies; justification of non-choices was the most common strategy. Practical implications - For wholesalers and retailers the results show that conscious consumers demands groceries that are both organic and eco-friendly in order to act on intentions. Originality/value - By using innovative qualitative methods this report identifies some contemporary consumer dilemmas. The dilemma that the most conscious consumers have is the dilemma between organic and eco-friendly. In order to solve this justification of non-choices is the most common strategy for consumers to handle the dilemma.

  • Internet grocery shopping : a necessity, a pleasurable adventure, or an act of love? : a longitudinal study 1998-2003 of 23 Swedish households
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    •   Shopping for groceries on the Internet has been an alternative for Swedish consumers since 1996. Despite a huge interest in this behavior from consumers, retailers and the media, Internet grocery shopping has not diffused among the Swedish consumers. Many of the Internet grocery distributors have shut down their business. At present there are only a few distributors still offering their consumers the opportunity of Internet grocery shopping. The majority of the Internet grocery shoppers returned to the physical grocery store after some time of Internet shopping.   The aim of this study is to analyze changes in the behavior of shoppers as they become more experienced when shopping for groceries on the Internet. The aim is also to study why consumers disadopt Internet grocery shopping. In order to do so, a longitudinal study between the years 1998-2003 has been carried out, with 23 Swedish households. The results stem from a mix of qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, diary-writing (referred to as introspection) and collages.   The empirical material is analyzed from three different theoretical perspectives; a rational, decision-making perspective, an experiential perspective and an anthropological perspective, where shopping is treated as an act of love. Doing so it becomes obvious that Internet grocery shopping does not live up to consumer’s expectations. The results from the study show that Internet grocery shopping is far from being an activity performed for utilitarian reasons only. Shopping for groceries also implies getting the senses aroused. When applying an anthropological perspective, grocery shopping is an activity performed as an expression of love and other relationships. The Internet grocery store fails in meeting up to both utilitarian needs and emotional needs.

  • Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The Principles of Knowledge Creation is an essential guide to the various methods of collating, explaining and understanding research data. It provides an overview of the possibilities and opportunities that exist in the research world, and demonstrates the pluralism of scientific approaches and methods. The book explores research tools and techniques in the context of objectifying science and interpreting science, and the application of critical science methods. An exhaustive range of research methods are examined by subject specialists from varied social science backgrounds, including sociology, anthropology, philosophy, psychology and pedagogy. They illustrate that no single knowledge creation approach can be applied to all enquiries or studies, and that different interpretations and approaches can lead to the founding of new knowledge and explanations. This fascinating, hands-on approach promises to inspire students and researchers to experiment with new and different methods of solving their research problems. As such, it will strongly appeal to all those with an interest in research and research data within the social sciences.

  • 2017

  • You have to eat French fries and Bernaise sauce otherwise life is over! : consumers' dilemmas concerning food choices
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nordic retail research. - Göteborg : BAS. - 9789172463110 ; , s. 33-47
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of food choices are often made in isolation, concerning a single product and regarded as an individual consumer activity. The social and cultural system, in which food choices are made, is often neglected. This paper argues that food choices are influenced by the household members and take place in a social context. Compromises between contradicting demands of different household members becomes the solution to align individual preferences. There are many individual wills to consider in order to buy, to cook and to serve food that suits all family members. Traditional attitude models that have been used in food studies when measuring determinants of food choices have had a rather low rate of predictability. What people say they intend to buy is not the same as the actual choice in the food store.  Hence, it often exist a gap between intention and practices. The paper aims at presenting some consumer strategies that consumers employ in order to mediate dilemmas when choosing what food to buy. In order to shed light on the processes that occur between intentions and practices concerning food choices different qualitative methods were applied. A consumer panel consisting of 33 Swedish households was followed over one and a half year. Various consumer dilemmas were identified: price and quality, time and ambition, health and taste, originality and children´s demands and organic and eco-friendly. In order to solve these dilemmas consumer used various strategies such as 1) Justification of non-choices, 2) Compensatory food habits, 3) Individualized food habits and 4) Agony reducing strategies.Key words: intentions, practices, food choices, consumer panel, qualitative method

    • The implementation of anti-windup methods in mid-rangingcontrol needs further attention. It is demonstrated how use of standard anti-windup schemes may give unnecessary performance degradation during saturation. The problem isillustrated for two separate systems, control of oxygen concentration in a bio-reactor and temperature controlof a cooling system. In the paper, guidelines are derived for how to design the standard anti-windup scheme to recover performance. As an alternative a modified anti-windup scheme for mid-ranging control is presented that minimizes the performance degradation during saturation.

  • Coaching in Higher Education : A generic training model to prevent stress
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: the 21st QMOD Conference on Quality and Service Sciences ICQSS, Cardiff, Wales, UK 2018. - Lund. ; , s. 164-175
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Background - In today’s fragmented world, university students often experience increasing pressure, which in turn lead to projected responsibility and increasing demands on university lecturers. For both students and lecturers this can cause stress. A basic prerequisite for success in the work with education is commitment, and visible and distinct “leadership”. The leaders, in this case are e.g., teachers and supervisors. Their most important role in the student’s development process is to motivate, coach and help developing individuals. Hence, it is significant to have functioning tools in order to lower the experienced stress level and to prevent illness, and at the same time encourage the individuals to take responsibility for their own developing process. Purpose – This paper aims to present a tentative model for coaching students in order to give them insights in their own developing process. Methodology/Approach: This paper is based on a combination of literature study and an investigation, in order to create a pilot study of a generic coaching model used in new surroundings. The model is then tested. Findings - The study indicates that there are different uses for coaching models. These models can help develop behaviour, developing the individual, the process or an organization. There are also strong links between the studied coaching models and how organizational development may be pursued. For example, the importance of interaction between the coach, leader (in this case the lecturer), as well as the student mentioned in the study, and can be translated into relationship. Further on, coaching for development of the individual and/or the process at the same time embraces respect for people and is adapted to the situation. A coaching model is usually phased. It is about a trust-based learning process that takes place between the coach and the recipient of coaching. This can be done through open, relevant framing of questions which should be based on the situation and the objectives. This conference paper suggests a generic training model based on the literature and an investigation. Practical Implications - The major implication of the study is to emphasise that the students have the responsibility for their own development, but with the help of university lecturers and a coaching tool the appreciated stress and pressure can be processed. Value of the paper – The study makes a contribution to the area of Quality Management in Higher Education and the toolbox for Teachers’ Leadership. Keywords: Leadership in teaching, Coaching, Individual Learning, Quality in Higher Education, Toolbox for Lecturers. Article classification: Research paper.

  • Coaching in Higher Education  – Increase student’s insight and competence for planning to reach desired goals
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Background - In today’s fragmented world, university students often experience increasing pressure with studies, together with a student’s own increased demands on life. The circumstances for today’s university students are somewhat different from earlier generations, which generates needs for different pedagogics and teaching. Based on a study by Henningsson and Fredriksson (2018), planning is one essential part of deep learning, and plan and realize the plans seems to be difficult. Based on a questionnaire with free answers this paper will show that the students need to be educated in what and how to plan and realization of their plans. Learning repertoire in coaching model - long term, means that the student work with reflection and evaluation. These aspects can be linked to students’ progress with the help of the portfolio. The skill of planning is linked to the learning repertoire to reach desired goals.Purpose – This paper aims to investigate if, what and how students plan, i.e., their self-management, in order to give the students insights in their own developing process.Methodology/Approach: This paper is based on a combination of literature study and a survey, in order to study students ways of working to achieve desired goals.Findings – Students are involving in many issues and do not always focus on their education programme. Desirable goals differ between students, and how to reach them. Planning to reach the goals also differs. One conclusion that can be highlighted, is the difficulties or lack of skills to plan, especially when it comes to how. In this paper a suggestion to amplify the PDSA-cycle in the portfolio is made.Practical Implications - The major implication of the study is to help students in their personal progress.Value of the paper – The study makes a contribution to the area of Quality Management in Higher Education and the toolbox university students.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Infectious Diseases. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS INC. - 0022-1899 .- 1537-6613. ; 229:4, s. 1209-1214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) is a complex neuroinflammatory disorder caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted through tick bites. Epigenetic alterations, specifically DNA methylation (DNAm), could play a role in the host immune response during infection. In this study, we present the first genome-wide analysis of DNAm in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with LNB and those without LNB. Using a network-based approach, we highlighted HLA genes at the core of these DNAm changes, which were found to be enriched in immune-related pathways. These findings shed light on the role of epigenetic modifications in the LNB pathogenesis that should be confirmed and further expanded upon in future studies. We present the first genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with and those without the tick-borne infection Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB). Our findings show that LNB is associated with immune-related DNA methylation changes.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cylinder pressure sensors provide detailed information on the diesel engine combustion process. This paper presents a method to use cylinder-pressure data for prediction of engine emissions by exploiting data-mining techniques. The proposed method uses principal component analysis to reduce the dimension of the cylinder-pressure data, and a neural network to model the nonlinear relationship between the cylinder pressure and emissions. An algorithm is presented for training the neural network to predict cylinder-individual emissions even though the training data only provides cylinder-averaged target data. The algorithm was applied to an experimental data set from a six-cylinder heavy-duty engine, and it is verified that trends in emissions during transient engine operation are captured successfully by the model.

  • Closed-Loop Control of Combustion Phasing in an HCCI Engine Using VVA and Variable EGR
  • 2007. - 10
  • Ingår i: 5th IFAC Symposium on Advances in Automotive Control. ; 40, s. 501-506
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine requires closed-loop control of combustion phasing for reliable operation. Variable valve actuation (VVA) has previously been shown to enable cycle-to-cycle, cylinder-individual control with high precision, but suffers from a narrow operating range. Adding variable exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to the closed-loop control structure can extend the operating range. A mid-ranging control structure is presented here for combined VVA and EGR actuations in a multi-cylinder engine. The control structure is simple to implement and preserves the fast, cylinder-individual, and precise actuation of the VVA system while extending the operating range. Experimental results verify the performance of the control structure.

  • Control Structures for Low-Emission Combustion in Multi-Cylinder Engines
  • 2008
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Traditionally, heavy-duty diesel engines have high efficiencies but also high emissions of NOx and soot particles. New engine concepts show the potential to retain diesel-like efficiencies while reducing emissions by forming a completely or partially homogeneous mixture of fuel and air prior to ignition through compression. The long ignition delay required to form this homogeneous mixture makes the combustion process less predictable and inherently more difficult to control. This thesis summarizes work on control structures for three different setups of such low-emissions combustion engines. In a port-fuel injection engine, it was shown that combining two control variables in a mid-ranging control structure can address the problem of actuator saturation. In a fumigation engine, control was proven to be a powerful tool for automatic calibration in a laboratory setting. In a direct injection engine, LQG controllers were designed to optimize an emissions trade-off cost function during transients. Experiments were performed on a six-cylinder heavy-duty engine, and multi-cylinder effects and complications were explicitly considered in the work.

  • Data-Rich Multivariable Control of Heavy-Duty Engines
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The combustion engine is today the dominant technology for transportation of goods and people world-wide. Concerns for global warming, toxic exhaust emissions, as well as cost and availability of fuel have in recent years created incentives for technological evolution of combustion engines. More sophisticated engine instrumentation with additional degrees of freedom has been added to the engine design to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. But, as engines become more complex, the task of calibration and control becomes more challenging. This thesis investigates approaches to utilize rich sensor information for multivariable engine control. Different combustion modes, and different combinations of sensors and actuators have been studied and evaluated experimentally on a full-scale six-cylinder heavy-duty engine. The work is divided into four areas: virtual emissions sensing, dynamic emissions models, optimal engine control, and control of sensitive combustion modes. The theme of the thesis is to show how feedback control based on rich sensor information can be exploited to improve the engine operation and reduce the off-line calibration effort. The virtual sensing work presents a data-mining method for predicting exhaust emissions from cylinder pressure data. Principal component analysis was used to reduce the dimensionality of the high-resolution data, and a neural network model was trained to predict emissions on a cycle-to-cycle, cylinder-individual basis. The work on dynamic models investigates how system identification can be used to find multivariable dynamic models from a set of engine actuators to a set of variables related to high-level engine specifications, namely emissions, work output, combustion phasing, and peak pressure derivative. It was shown how fairly simple Wiener models can capture the main dynamics of the engine at a grid of operating points. One of the identified multivariable models was used for optimal control of the engine. In contrast to most previous work in the field, integration of fuel- and gas-path control into a single framework was pursued. A model predictive controller was designed based on a cost function expressed in terms of high-level engine control objectives, and feedback was based on measured emissions as well as cylinder pressure data. The final part of the thesis presents work on two sensitive combustion modes, HCCI and dual-fuel operation. Here, feedback control is necessary to achieve robust operation. For both types of combustion, it was shown how a combination of two actuators can be used to successfully control the combustion process.

    • From a control design point of view, modern diesel engines are dynamic, nonlinear, MIMO systems. This paper presents a method to find low-complexity black-box dynamic models suitable for model predictive control (MPC) of NOx and soot emissions based on on-line emissions measurements. A four-input-five-output representation of the engine is considered, with fuel injection timing, fuel injection duration, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbo (VGT) valve positions as inputs, and indicated mean effective pressure, combustion phasing, peak pressure derivative, NOx emissions, and soot emissions as outputs. Experimental data were collected on a six-cylinder heavy-duty engine at 30 operating points. The identification procedure starts by identifying local linear models at each operating point. To reduce the number of dynamic models necessary to describe the engine dynamics, Wiener models are introduced and a clustering algorithm is proposed. A resulting set of two to five dynamic models is shown to be able to predict all outputs at all operating points with good accuracy.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problem of minimizing emissions of NO. and soot in a diesel engine using fuel injection timings and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve position in a low-pressure EGR system as control variables is addressed. Two feedback variables are computed from in-cylinder pressure sensor data, the crank angle degree of 50 % fuel burnt, and the ignition delay. Empirical maps of NO, and soot according to the feedback variables form the basis of a quadratic cost function in the feedback variables which is minimized by LQG control. For a multi-cylinder engine, the number of control variables will be less than the number of output variables to be controlled, and the consequences of this setup for the LQG controller is addressed. Experimental results verify the performance of the controller at a fixed operating point of a six-cylinder heavy-duty engine.

    • Traditionally, diesel engine control has had to rely on indirect feedback variables and empirical open-loop maps because direct measurements of the variables representing high-level objectives, such as emissions, have not been available in production engines. With new sensors being developed, the opportunity opens to design the controller directly based on high-level objectives. In this paper, we propose to use model predictive control as a systematic way to go directly from high-level specifications to a control algorithm. The controller uses four actuator variables and five measured variables and is based on a model obtained through system identification. Experimental results on a six-cylinder heavy-duty engine around a fixed operating point demonstrate the potential of the control scheme.

    • Autism is a highly heritable disorder but the specific genes involved remain largely unknown. The higher prevalence of autism in men than in women, in conjunction with a number of other observations, has led to the suggestion that prenatal brain exposure to androgens may be of importance for the development of this condition. Prompted by this hypothesis, we investigated the potential influence of variation in the androgen receptor (AR) gene on the susceptibility for autism. To this end, 267 subjects with autism spectrum disorder and 617 controls were genotyped for three polymorphisms in exon 1 of the AR gene: the CAG repeat, the GGN repeat and the rs6152 SNP. In addition, parents and affected siblings were genotyped for 118 and 32 of the cases, respectively. Case-control comparisons revealed higher prevalence of short CAG alleles as well as of the A allele of the rs6152 SNP in female cases than in controls, but revealed no significant differences with respect to the GGN repeat. Analysis of the 118 families using transmission disequilibrium test, on the other hand, suggested an association with the GGN polymorphism, the rare 20-repeat allele being undertransmitted to male cases and the 23-repeat allele being overtransmitted to female cases. Sequencing of the AR gene in 46 patients revealed no mutations or rare variants. The results lend some support for an influence of the studied polymorphisms on the susceptibility for autism, but argue against the possibility that mutations in the AR gene are common in subjects with this condition.

    • This case study investigates the role of social-psychological variables in the generalpublic’s intention to support conservation of five local biotopes. A questionnairesurvey of 245 people was carried out in Kristianstad Municipality, Sweden. Inhierarchical regression analyses, public intention to support conservation was partlypredicted by attitude toward biodiversity conservation and by personal norm. Therelationship between these variables and intention differed depending on the ecologicalcontent of the biotope. It is concluded that when communicating the importanceof conserving biotopes to the public, the message should be tailored according to theecological content of the biotope as well as with regard to public attitudes andpersonal norms.

    • Fusion genes are potent driver mutations in cancer. In this study, we delineate the fusion gene landscape in a consecutive series of 195 paediatric B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (BCP ALL). Using RNA sequencing, we find in-frame fusion genes in 127 (65%) cases, including 27 novel fusions. We describe a subtype characterized by recurrent IGH-DUX4 or ERG-DUX4 fusions, representing 4% of cases, leading to overexpression of DUX4 and frequently co-occurring with intragenic ERG deletions. Furthermore, we identify a subtype characterized by an ETV6-RUNX1-like gene-expression profile and coexisting ETV6 and IKZF1 alterations. Thus, this study provides a detailed overview of fusion genes in paediatric BCP ALL and adds new pathogenetic insights, which may improve risk stratification and provide therapeutic options for this disease.

    • Modelica allows systems to be described with reuseable components and with a high precision. To be able to use such complex models efficiently, high demands are set on tools that allow the user to extract the information needed from the models in a straight-forward manner. For this purpose, design-of-experiments techniques can be used to systematically analyze the complex models. In this paper, it is demonstrated how a Modelica model of a diesel engine can be used for control design. The engine model has multiple inputs and outputs, it is nonlinear, has many parameters, and has a higher order than most control design algorithms are able to handle in a numerically robust way.It is shown how the features for dynamic design-of-experiments analysis in the FMI Toolbox for MATLAB can be used to analyze the variation in system dynamics across the engine operating range. A gain scheduling of nine multivariable linear-quadratic-gaussian (LQG) controllers, is designed based on linearization and model reduction of the original nonlinear FMU model.

    • The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the appeal of anthropomorphism to marketers. This is done through reference to three relevant advertising models, the Symbolic Communications Model, the Symbolic Transfer Device Model, and the VisCAP Presenter Model, and one critical case study involving an anthropomorphized sheep presenter for a Swedish mobile telecommunications company.
